There was absolutely no way Professor Duskurk would open his classroom without being present. He had carefully arranged the desks into a horseshoe around the very edge of the classroom so that everyone had a clear view of the blackboard at the front of the classroom and the center floor. In front of the blackboard was a small table covered with a black cloth. There were clear outlines of something other than the table under the cloth, but that was all. Professor Duskurk stood beside the door with a clipboard. "Please state your name and then take the first desk available, working clockwise around the room," he said in a no nonsense voice as each student entered the room. ooc: please act as if your character has been here the whole time if you don't get online before we begin and just add an ooc note for me with your character name. Your names will be added to the roll in the order in which you join us. Quote:

Alexa's mouth dropped open as the man instructed that they perform the Unforgivables on the spiders on their desks.
Oh my Merlin this dude was a nutter.... but she was actually frightened to leave the classroom... afraid he'd like hex her on the way out. She took out her phoenix feather wand and then cleared her desk of all materials... aside from the nasty little spider.
Oho... she was gonna have to talk to someone about this dude.

Kita frowned slightly and raised an eyebrow. She had never been told off in such a way before. She sighed and looked down at her parchment again.She finished taking notes on what the Professor was saying and massaged her aching hand before clearing up her equipment. She put everything away and took out her wand. She didn't want to perform the Unforgivable curses on spiders. Especially the killing one. She was a vegeterian and killing animals was certainly something she didn't do. However, she knew that this was something she had to do. Either that or leaving which was a big no-no. She looked at the professor and waited for further instructions.

And Jake didn't want to kill anything...

He wouldn't even attempt it.
"An'..." he looked at his wand. This could be disastrous. Ha. "My muhh-magic ggggoes wr-wrong..."
AND he didn't like this class. At all.
"An' sir... I dddon' think..." Jake bit on his lip and raised his voice so it was a little bolder. "We sshhhhouldn't... they're un... unfffforgiveable..."

If you are squeamish then I suggest you leave the classroom now and switch out of my class and into something more to your speed: muggle studies."
He paused to give the students time to prepare or leave.
Georgiana grimaced, they were going to practice the unforgivable Curses?! She clenched her teeth as he said they could leave, she considered but held her ground. She was not going to give up. She promptly packed her books away and pulled her wand out. She was ready.

Evelyn, literally gasped when she saw what was under the black cloth. Leaning back on her chair, eyes as wide as they would go, she stared at the little demon creatures....spiders. The unnaturally and most skin crawling, creepy, eight legged thing in the whole world, and there were, how many of them? In the room, with her? She slightly freaked out when the Professor made them disappear, wondering if he set them loose or something in the room and she was just about to jump up onto her desk when one of the boxes appeared there.
Scooting her chair as far away as her arms could reach, she swiftly took out her wand and pointed it at the spider. It...should...die! Burn! Be squished with a shoe or torn to pieces! Spiders should not exist! EVER! "One wrong move...and you're gone." she whispered to it, narrowing her eyes and watching it's every disgusting movement before remembering what the professor had said. They were going to perform the unforgivable curses on these things? That was sooo better than having them burn from fire...

Arya stoped taking notes and looked at the professor stunded. Surely he didn't expect the first year to preform unforgiveable curse, even if she was unsucessfull. She blinked twice when a spider apeared before her. The last thing she wanted to do was harm a inoccent creature for the sake of her education. She glanced at the door wanting to leave but also wanting to stay. In the end she decided it was best to stay. After all, he did say they wouldn't be sucessfull.She flicked her wrist and took hold of her wand, waiting for the professors instructions but not sure if she would follow them or not.

Allison's jaw dropped. Surely someone would say how they weren't allowed to perform such horrible acts upon defenseless spiders. Okay, so the spiders were gross and hairy, but they were creatures as well.
Still rambling in her head Allison cleared her desk and took out her wand without realizing it. Looking at herself already with wand at hand Allison's eyes widened. Would she lean towards her moral approach or simply go with what her academic brain which was currently dictating "Just do as he says Allison Scott!" | |

...Well.. he HAD had it drummed into him for the past four years that you had to know how to cast, and understand, an Unforgivable in order to defend yourself against one. Meh.

Natasha was busy writing down notes on what he was saying, but stopped abruptly. Unforgivable Curses? Spiders? Her eyes widened slightly. This guy was more than creepy. Seriously. She looked at the spider with slight pity, though she wouldn't, she presumed, be able to produce one of the curses, she still wouldn't want to inflict pain on it. She shook the thought from her mind and looked up at the Professor, she didn't want to be made to leave. Even if it was seriously creepy.
Were they allowed to do this? Even just try and learn them?

Erm, REALLY? She wasn't THAT freaked out by spiders and stuff, but to have one simply materialise in front of her was NOT something she enjoyed. Gulping, she looked at anything but the spider in the box and swiftly cleared away her notes until she was left with only her wand in one hand, and a shivering fist as the other.
Yeah.
Plus, why was he so rude? He didn't have to be - they all got that he was scary. One quick look around the room was enough to see that.

Huh?
Destiny was slightly confused. This man was going to make them use the Unforgivable Curses..on poor little spiders!?
But they were so cute..and defenseless. Spiders never hurt anyone before. Unless it was like a big mutated spider, and Destiny never seen any of them before. She glanced at Evelyn to see how she was handling the spiders on her desk, and she was pointing her wand at them!
She didn't want to see any spiders die, so she turned back to the container on her desk, 'Don't worry spiders..I won't hurt you.' and she might have stroked the container a little bit.

While she didn't particularly want to even see if it was possible for her to successfully cast the Unforgiveable curses, Adrienne continued reminding herself that the Ministry had put the professor here, and therefore her and the other students couldn't really be prosecuted or anything. And they were only casting them on spiders, and there wasn't a lot of love lost between her and the arachnids. She loved animals, but spiders were kinda creepy. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself and exchanged her notetaking supplies for her wand. She just hoped there were going to be precautions that they wouldn't accidentally cast the spells on each other, not that she questioned her own aim. But the Unforgiveables were scary.

A wave of his black wand and the boxes disappeared from the table at the front and reappeared on the student desks, one on each.
"You cannot hope to defend yourself against something you know nothing about so for the practical portion of this class we will be practicing the Unforgivable Curses on these spiders. I do not expect any of you to be successful, but that does not mean you cannot attempt them. We will start with the easiest of the three to perform. Now, clear your books and take out your wands. If you are squeamish then I suggest you leave the classroom now and switch out of my class and into something more to your speed: muggle studies."
He paused to give the students time to prepare or leave. The Wizengamot are the primary body from which laws are made... Reese quickly wrote down what Professor Duskurk was saying until he mention something that she would have NEVER thought she would hear inside of a classroom. Looking up from her parchment, she locked eyes with the Professor.
They were going to learn Unforgivable Curses? Wasn't that illegal to learn inside the walls of Hogwarts? If she had the guts to open her mouth right now, she would ask that question. Though, she was a chicken. Instead, she quickly took her materials off the desk and placed them inside her bag. She took out her wand and then waited for further instructions.
After waiting a few seconds, she moved her eyes over to the containers and almost spazzed out in her chair when she noticed what was inside of them.
SPIDERS?! She took a quick glanced towards Jake before sinking deeper into her seat. She was PETRIFIED to tell the Professor she had a fear of them.

Sabel blinked dumbfounded at the Professor. Here they were preaching right and wrong and now he was going to get them to try and practice unforgivable curses?! He vaugely wondered if this was in the Wizengamot's decree of what was right and wrong. It didn't make sense that it was. They were the ones that had named them unforgivable.
His eyes drifted to the spiders trapped in the jar and he felt a pang of pity for them as he mechanically pulled out his wand. He set it quietly on the desk beside the jar. This was exactly what he had meant about a body declaring right and wrong and a personal choice between it.
His frown deepend and he glanced back up at the Professor. Would he be a hypocrit if he just followed along numbly? The Professor had a point, about being able to defend, but unforgivable was unforgivable.
He raised a hand. "Sir, if we understand these curses, can we use...this..." he indicated the spiders that strangely reminded him of his broom, Horus. Everything feeling had a soul. "To defend others from the curses?"
For the greater good right? Maybe. He wasn't so sure anymore. | |

Kiri did not suffer from arachnophobia, so the scuttling spider inside its little cage didn't trouble her at all, but she certainly was unsure about attempting to cast the three Unforgivables. Weren't they illegal? She was sure she'd read something to that effect.
While Kiri was pretty sure that a lesson such as this had to have been properly cleared with the headmaster (and possibly the Ministry of Magic as well), and that, as Professor Duskurk had said, no one here really had the ability to actually perform a Curse successfully, she didn't even feel like trying.
But it was the jab at Muggle Studies that convinced Kiri to stay. She was a Quidditch Captain! Her broom was fast enough to push her brain out through her nose if she braked too sharply, she was not about to get squeamish when it came to waving her wand at a spider and muttering a few sinister words.
She cleared the desk of her books, then slowly drew her wand. Rolling it through her fingers, she waited for Professor Duskurk to continue.

Avery leaned forward when she heard mention of the Unforgivaeable Curses. She was quite familar with them. snince her mother was an Auror before she died. Avery leaned back as the spider appeared in front of her. She wasn't afraid of them she just didn't want to be leaning over top of a spider. It felt strange. Avery loved to set spiders on fire. She didn't know why she just did. So they were to preform the curses? Avery liked this teacher.

Taking note of the other tip that the dark professorly man offered about answering a question with a question, Aaron listened as he moved on. The practical portion and what was under the table.
Unforgivable curses? EEP! This queasy feeling his stomach was just building up as the professor continued on. Sure he'd heard of the curses, but he was only eleven, so none of his siblings or mother bothered to tell him details. And yet now, on his desk, there was a clear box of spiders... Spiders that he was expected to CURSE.
Shuttering, Aaron tried to picture something else... ANYTHING else but spiders. And then the fact that he had to CURSE them. Perform spells that were WAY above his level! He was only a first year, barely aware of the water-conjuring spell or stupefy, yet now he was expected to curse spiders that had FEELINGS. Sure the professor gave him the option to leave, but he was a Rose and couldn't do that. Even if he wasn't comfortable with performing such advanced spells on innocent creatures, Aaron Rose would NOT be considered a coward. He had to try.
Deep breath, he told himself as he inhaled through his nose and exhaled out his mouth, withdrawing his wand. It would all be okay. Hopefully.

Kailey gulped as she looked at the spider. She would not leave this class! She wanted to learn how to defend and such. But ever since she was little she never ever tolerated spiders. So she took a deep breath,lay her elbow on her desk and put her cheek in her palm and started to examine its features and quietly took out her wand. The atmosphere was sort of quiet except for the questions being thrown at the professor. She pitied him for having to answer them but she shrugged that though off and waited for the next instruction.

Melanie gulped, now listening raptly to his words.
She didn't like spiders. Not very many people did. She wouldn't wish anything horrible upon them though... And, in the Hufflepuff's opinion anything bad enough to be deemed unforgivable was nothing short of horrible.
Besides, was this not Defense Against The Dark Arts Class? Shouldn't they be learning defensive spells, not spells that would get them tossed into Askaban should they ever use them? They were illegal, for crying out loud!
"Professor Duskurk," Melanie raised her hand to get his attention. And yeah, like before,... she didn't want him to glare at her, so her eyes still weren't quite looking right at him, but in his general direction. "These spells are sorta illegal, right? I don't wanna hurt anything, and I don't wanna get locked up forever either." she informed him. If they were going to do something dark, couldn't it at least be something they were allowed to do?
Jeez. Professor Duskurk was rather rebellious, wasn't he? Staring down at the spider, that she had just noticed had appeared on her desk, apologetically, she wondered if perhaps she should just leave now. Melanie wasn't feeling so great about DADA anymore.
