ooc: all students may attend

There was absolutely no way Professor Duskurk would open his classroom without being present. He had carefully arranged the desks into a horseshoe around the very edge of the classroom so that everyone had a clear view of the blackboard at the front of the classroom and the center floor. In front of the blackboard was a small table covered with a black cloth. There were clear outlines of something other than the table under the cloth, but that was all. Professor Duskurk stood beside the door with a clipboard. "Please state your name and then take the first desk available, working clockwise around the room," he said in a no nonsense voice as each student entered the room.

ooc: please act as if your character has been here the whole time if you don't get online before we begin and just add an ooc note for me with your character name. Your names will be added to the roll in the order in which you join us.

Kaitlynnh positioned the quill between her fingers once the Professor began to speak, the end of the quill very gently touched the parchment in front of her, leaving exactily one dot as she instantly paused on 'the dark arts'. Clearly she hadn't even glanced at the chalkboard until now. This was suppose to be Defense Against the Dark Arts, was it not?

She frowned, taking a quick sideways look down the row of faces seated on her left, spotting Legend quite abruptly. Katie shook her head and returned her gaze onto the parchment rather than look up to possibly catch the Professors eyes, and carefully wrote out something along the lines of what he had just said, biting her tongue while she was at it to keep her mouth shut.

Something told her she was going to regret not playing it sick and going to the nurses office or simply leaving when the dude had offered the chance.

Melanie peered down at her desk as he kept looking up to give them looks and GLARING at them.

She listened to her lecture, but she didn't really want to meet this guy's gaze. He looked angry at her, but she'd never spoken to him in her life.

It wasn't fair. Scowling and tapping her quill on her desk as he went on with his lecture Melanie payed attemtion, because there wasn't anything else she could do. She sure hoped he went on to the practical part soon. Lectures in general were just... boring. Scribbling something onto her parchment that looked a lot like, Dark Arts = Useful to all Aurors. , she rested her head in her hands and stared at her desk some more.

What fun.

She'd jump out the window if she had to, all she wanted was for the professor to stop glaring at the like it. It was freaking her out. But Nikki kept the smile on her face small. She wasn't going to show her fear...

Arya began to take notees as the professor spoke. She was careful not to look the man in the eyes or chew her gum to loud as she didn't want him to bring attention to her. Arya's goal was to just get through the class unnoticed.

Kellen was not going to accept that dare. Yes, this professor clearly intended to rule his classroom through intimidation, but again, not a problem. He doubted there would be any goofing off resulting in self-inflicted injury here. Strange, considering they were learning about the Dark Arts.

At least he was sitting beside Livvy. It could only be a good thing that the Head Girl was close, right? Just in case.

"The ministry does since they keep everything in check", Avery said, raising her hand half-heartedly before she answered. She noticed a few people were intimidated by this teacher. How odd. Some of them were older than her and were freaked out by him. but he didn't really scare Avery. She thought he was cool. She would even give him a hug if she had the chance.

"The Ministry, I would assume. But... as you said, the Dark Arts in the eye of the beholder, so wouldn't it be up to each individual to decide what is or isn't dark? Sir." Alexa said after raising her hand. The dude freaked her out, but she wasn't too afraid to speak up. No way, no how.

Legend raised his hand lazily. He knew the answer. "The ministry obviously. The decide which spells and stuff are only created to cause pain and you know....just injure people. Then I guess they go and rate that as dark." His answer was right. It was from him. So it had to be right.

Satine hesitantly put her hand in the air, "Professor, don't we ultimately decide for ourselves what is evil and what is good..." she said it with confidence because it made sense to her.

Feeling someone nudge her, Reese looked back at her brother who was...looking at her notes? She sort of realized he would wanted her notes since he wasn't taking any. Right, she would talk to him about that after class. She quickly scribbled a few words on her sheet of parchment before looking back at the Professor.

She raised her hand and then answered, "Does the Minister of Magic decide what is dark or not?" Considering the facts that the Minister seems to do EVERYTHING, it seemed like a logical answer.

Who decides? Umm...eh. Raising her hand, she decided to give it a go, even though her decision was either on the Ministry or the person themselves. Which to choose... "Yourself, Professor? I mean, the person that is using the supposed 'dark' magic. Doesn't it depend on if they are using it for either good or evil?" It sounded good to her, but she never knew if it came out sounding right. Her words sounded good in her mind, but sometimes they came out wrong. Eh, she'll know just by his creepy stare if he understood her or not.

This bloke was cracked. Lorcan raised his hand tentatively. "Excuse me sir, but surely a spell that would hurt some one or k-kill them, that would be dark magic. Like if you p-put a hurling hex on a broomstick you knew someone was g-going to r-ride, well that would be a fairly dark thing to do, wouldn't it? Cos the p-person w-would get ch-ch-chucked off the broom and br-break their neck, wouldn't they?" Nerves and emotions were raw in his voice and he steadily avoided Lexi's eye. She was the only one who knew what he was talking about really.

Ian wanted to say, 'my mum' but he was quick to think better of it. He raised his hand while his foot tapped very lightly against the floor, "The Ministry of Magic, I suppose, since they like bossing people around, but I suppose that it is our job to decided if they are dark or not, considering what you just said about them, Professor."

Jack raised his hand as a few other people answered. Perhaps the best way to deal with this professor was to just be a good student? Even if he terrified him Jack couldn't stop himsef from trying to impress him. "I believe the Ministry has the final say in what is dark, both with the magic part and the creatures that some consider dark beings," he answered.

Becca didn't say anything, but copied down the notes. This guy seemed to know he was the dominating species and they were his prey, scampering around like ants trying not to be stomped on by the ever taller human. Becca did not like him one bit.

This guy was creepy. She preferred Lawson. Natasha wondered why he was Muggle Studies now, but shook the thought from her mind, writing down quick notes of what the Professor was saying. She thought for a moment when he asked who decides. She rose her hand into the air. "Isn't that just the Ministry, Sir?"

Choluna entered the class very sad, she just wanted to get this done and over with. She took a seat "Choluna Lovechanggood, Second Year." she said.

Herminny had her own idea of how to answer this question and raised her hand and said, "I believe that it is in the eye of the beholder what makes a spell or creature dark but since so many people have differing oinions on that we have the Ministry to make the ultimate decissions on this issue".

Frowning now, was he? Disappointed that nobody had dared to object? Dared to probably get three years of detention with him? Well, they weren't that stupid now after all. Nobody wanted to risk losing points that early into the term.

Oh, wow, this question obviously was directed at them. Would it be safe to answer without having to fear to end up in the Hospital Wing? Or worth detention with Professor Duskurk? Well, Nancy thought it was worth a try. "Sir? I guess society does. People like to copy other people's behavior to be...normal. So if a few people say this one person-" And she was so not thinking about a certain professor right then. "-is dark then soon everybody considers them dark. Or nearly everybody I guess." Was he going to curse her now?

Melanie, still staring down at her desk, thought this over for a moment, her face screwed up with concentration. Then she raised her hand up high to answer the question.

"Mr...Uhh, Professor. Sir. Duskurk, doesn't it sorta depend on how you use it? Or maybe it's the Law Enforcement part of the ministry who decides. I mean, they usually decide what's right and wrong...and to what degree." she guessed hopefully. Melanie honestly had no idea. No idea whatsoever...

Raising his hand, Jake swung his legs back and forth where he was sitting. "Me," the boy answered somewhat cryptically. Because yes he DID have the answer... and he believed that any one person decided on what was 'Dark'. But... just in case. "Or th-th-the mmmministry...?"
