Frustrated, Daphne sighed and just...let it go. Bored, huh? Daphne gripped her left arm with her free hand. She was just not focusing enough energy into it. Energy and concentration and properly channeled hate.

Maybe it was time to conjure her image. Maybe it was time to think about all those times she wished she never had to leave her room in the first place. Somewhere in between her cheeks being decorated with red and pink blots, and somewhere in between her brow wrinkling, the corner of Daphne's mouth turned downwards.

Raising her left arm again, her wand aimed for the otherwise unperturbed spider. "Crucio," she said. The spider, undoubtedly, felt nothing remotely close to pain. Perhaps a little buzz of electricity scoured its body.

A light little zap. Nothing to cause it any visible damage though. Sneering, Daphne almost wanted to pull a Neptune Bott as well.

Jack knew he was going to fail this part of the lesson. He knew it the second Duskurk had announced they were going to practice. He wasn't an idiot--he KNEW about these curses. He was a NEWT student! He knew that you had to actually FEEL the intensity behind it, and he knew that you had to WANT to cause pain for you to get any reaction at all. Jack had no intention of trying to cause harm to this spider so therefore--he wouldn't.

"Crucio!" he muttered, pointing his wand at the creature and barely whispering the word as he spoke. The creepy crawly thing barely moved. It twitched and, in annoyance, turned and started creeping along the table towards him. All he had managed to do was annoy it.

"Crucio!" he stammered again, pointing his wand at the spider that was advancing towards him. The spider stopped advancing--it probably didn't like the itty bitty shock of pain it felt from his amateur spell. If only the spider knew that Jack was showing him mercy...THEN it wouldn't try and attack him!

He wanted them to . . . . WHAT?! Kaitlynnh swallowed hard, keeping her head down while scooping up her parchment and quill that she shoved back into her bag and pulled out her wand as she was told. And then.. just sat there, staring at the spider she was suppose to cause physical harm to. Listening to those around her, the conversations with their spiders and mumbles of irritation, it all went through one ear and out the other.

She couldn't do it. Katie knew immediately it wasn't possible. Even if she could get the curse out of her mouth - which was a far cry from easy, - the wand work wouldn't be right, she was sure. And there was the whole other issue of her heart wasn't in it, if she uttered that awful word - no matter how many times, - it would do nothing over and over again. There was one thing she did know about Unforgiveable curses and it was you had to mean it for it to work. Kaitlynnh didn't exactily care for bugs, especially ones that could bite you and leave those itchy bumps, but that didn't mean she wanted to make it suffer either. It was a living, breathing thing.

Her face had paled, still looking down at the spider that tried and failed to escape and scurry off to safety. While she was almost certain some students remained quiet, like her, others continued to try. Legend's voice invaded her ears -- Animagus. She hadn't even thought of that. Squeezing her eyes shut for a moment, Katie opened them and released a shaky breath. Just do it.. try, it won't work anyway she told herself, but thinking of saying the word outloud felt like acid on her tongue, trying to get it out. "Cr-..C-" I can't do it, I won't do it. Still holding her wand in one hand and eyes fixed on the spider, Katie raised her other hand in the air, "Professor, may I please be excused from the rest of this lesson? I.. don't feel so well," That was an understatement, her stomach was queasy and her head felt dizzy. It was like many little black eight-legged spiders were roaming her insides, and that thought alone made her want to throw up.

OOC: Michelle Stefko-2nd Year Hufflepuff

Michelle pointed her wand at the spider and said, "Crucio!" She waited a few seconds, but nothing happened. She tried again but with more force to her words. "Crucio!" Again, nothing happened.

Gold ... didn't grin.

Yeah, surprise there, no? She didn't think this man was insane, to be honest - she thought he was an idiot. What kind of guy, really, showed people the way to intense hate? The anti-love?

Something of that sort, yes.

She checked the desire to roll her eyes, pointed her wand at the spider. "Don't worry, Tom," she told the little thing, in a very low voice - to make sure only she and the spider heard -- and yes, she HAD named ze spider. "I promise this won't hurt. Crucio!"

The spider ... might have blinked. Because nothing happened. As Gold had known it wouldn't -- she just didn't hate! Couldn't! And she certainly did NOT want to cause a creature pain.

"Crucio."

Once more, nothing happened. Tom crawled away a bit, then came back. Gold had to check a grin, this time round.

OOC: Gold Laksh, Gryffindor. Fifth year.

Ian McKensie had always been taught that Unforgivable Curses were not cast. His mum told him dooing as such would send him straight to Azkaban. Later, he'd found out while reading, that this wasn't just one of those things that mum would tell him NO just 'cause; his mum had been in fact correct, and since Ian didn't really fancy spending a lifetime in Azkaban with the creepy soul-sucking monsters, he'd just forgotten about the whole thing.

Now, however, it was an entirely different thing. Professor Duskurk was giving them full permission to try it on spiders, and the truth was that, while he would never, not in a million years admit in front of his parents (because he valued his life), Ian was actually rather excited.

In truth, he just didn't get what was such the big deal about - they were spiders! And, y'know, wasn't this class meant to prepare them for what was out there? Whatever it was? Sure he'd never thought about becoming an auror (he actually never would become an auror), but it was nice to be ready, no?

There were a lot of psychopaths out there. And a whole bunch in the making residing in this school, Ian thought glumly as he casted a look around and fixed his eyes briefly in some of his classmates.

Shrugging this off and thinking that the entire class should get a grip or just freaking walk out, the boy took out his wand and pointed it at the arachnid. "Crucio!" The spider stared at him. "I said ... Crucio!" He might as well been speaking in Ancient Greek and Merlin's knows what else, because the spider just kept looking at him without showing any kind of feeling pain or at least the tiniest amount of discomfort.

Well, hell.

Ian took comfort on the fact that his classmates weren't doing much better.

OOC: Severia M. Gaunt- 1st year Slytherin

Finally, something I know how to do. Maybe I did learn something from my mother after all.Severia pointed her wand at her spider and said in a low voice, "Crucio." The spider screamed and squirmed in pain. She smiled, slightly satisfied with herself for doing something right. Quickly wiping the smirk off of her face, she glanced over at Brant. I hope he doesn't think I'm weird for being good at this.

Satine glanced at her spider as it crawled around and then she glanced at her wand. She pushed back any moral dilemnas she might have in her mind still reminding herself that this was okay to do in Hogwarts because the Headmaster must've approved this lesson. She took a deep breath and then let it out focusing so much on the spider that she could swear that she noticed the hairs on it's leg move in the air she released back out from her deep breath.

She glanced at the spider and remembered that it didn't truly have feelings and that it was a horrid thing. She closed her eyes to focus more and flicked her wand and said "Crucio" under her breath. She quickly opened her eyes to see the spider now standing on the edge of her wand looking at her as if she had lost her mind.

She flicked the wand to get the spider off of it and then glanced around to see if anyone else was having the same luck as her.

"No, though there are some spells that are only performed non-verbally. This is a question for your charms professor."
"If you were truly evil you would not giggle at all. There is no such thing as an evil giggle," he said and then smiled ever so slightly. "However, there is such a thing as an evil chuckle," he said and gave a chilling example as he moved on.
"I said you needed to channel your hatred. Anger may be useful in generating hatred, but it is not required."
"You are probably not doing anything wrong. It is a dark spell and very advanced."
"There is no effect, though amusement and/or satisfaction may be a reaction one would have." Not that he knew anything about that.
"You may leave."
"I provided these spiders and none are animagi. It is a moot point."
"You need to pay better attention, learn to take notes, or start consulting them before asking questions," Professor Duskurk severely responded. He would not repeat himself.
"You may leave."



After a suitable period of time Professor Duskurk called the class to order. "Wands away!" he declared as he walked up to the front of the classroom and banished the spiders back to the front. He conjured the black cloth back and placed it over the boxes once more. "I will now assign homework. It is due one week from from now (ooc: one week from the time stamp of this post, whatever your time zone).

"I would you like you to write up a short essay for each of the following two questions:

1) How could even the most simple spell be considered dark? Include a specific example how one might use a benign spell in a dark way in your answer.

2) Under what circumstances could you survive a well aimed killing curse?


"You are dismissed."

Alexa reholstered her wand, jotted down the homework assignment and all but ran from the room. THat dude was too creepy for words.... and she had someone she needed to talk to right away... The Headmaster had to hear about Creepy McCreeperton

"Crucio."

"CRUCIO!"

Tom continued to crawl around. Once or twice, he came up to her and climbed on her hand, and she grinned at the little, eight-legged thing. What an amazing thing of nature, a spider!



Class ... over?

Thank Heavens, for that! Gold waved to Tom as he was banished away from her, then began to note down the homework. She would do this, as soon as she could. Even though the class had been a let-down.

A HUGE let-down, to be more precise.

Oh, well.

Not bothering to write down the homework, Lorcan holstered his wand and stuffed his things into his bag.

"Oi! Lexi! Wait!" He shouted after his friend, charging out of the classroom.

Wait, the class was over? Natasha jumped up, putting her wand back. She only just managed to stay still long enough to hear the Professor say the Homework, even that was creepy. Giving an apologetic smile to her spider she went straight for the door, she wanted to get out of her as soon as possible. She didn't know if she'd come back or not, what if he got them practicing Avada Kadavra on the poor spiders? But it was still DADA...

Natasha hurried out of the classroom, eager to be away from the Professor. He gave her chills.

Severia put her wand away and copied down the homework assignment. Gathering all of her notes, she hurried to the door. "That was a wonderful lesson, Professor. Hope to see you again soon." Severia said with a smile on her way out.

Nikki nodded her head, grateful that the professor was letting her leave. She couldn't stand it. She was either going to faint, or worse...throw up. Grabbing her bag, Nikki made her way towards the door. She'd get the homework later, right now, a trip to the Hospital Wing was what she needed.

Evelyn, fed up with the spider, grabbed her notebook and was just about to slam it down straight onto the giant, Slytherin eating, vile creature when it disappeared. WHAT?! Where did it go!? She wanted to kill it! Like it deserved!

Wands away...they were leaving? Frowning, she placed her notebook gently onto her desk before scooting her chair back in and sitting down. More homework. Great. But at least this time she might enjoy doing it. The first question was eh, but the second seemed really interesting. It would be nice to know what ways one could survive the killing curse.

Writing everything down, she slipped her quill, ink, notebook and wand back into her bag before standing up and waiting for Destiny. Her spider loving friend...yeesh.

Well, now.

For the first time in Ian's life he'd actually thought a class was not entirely useless and it was already over? Seriously? Come. On.

Dramatically sighing, the boy stuffed his wand back inside his school bag, and after writing down the homework that he would undoubtedly forget about doing, Ian hung his bag on his shoulder, gave Professor Duskurk an enthusiastic grin and the thumbs up and marched out of the classroom.

Yes, Ian had already made up his mind; he was pretty sure that his mum would entirely disapprove of the defense professor and his way of teaching and that, my friends, only meant one thing in Ian McKensie's book: Duskurk was the cool kind of interesting.

He was just about to start screaming at the spider and poke it with his wand when Mr. Evil said that class was over. Great, awesome, amazing! Now all he wanted to do was get out of there and hide - or talk to someone. Clearly he needed to get something off his chest. Now though he didn't know who to turn too; well he needed chocolate right now that was for sure. Pulling a chocolate frog out of his pocket he opened it without even caring and popped it into his mouth, chewing loudly.

Meh.

Packing away his stuff he re-holstered his wand and nearly bolted for the door, getting out of the way of people and desks. This place now creeped him out.

Kay wrote the homework down and read it over again. The Killing Curse? Kay put her wand away and grabbed her bag. Standing up see looked at the Professor. She didn't really understand him and there was something that gave her a funny feeling. "Thank you for the class Professor. Have a good day." Kay said giving him a nod of her head. She turned and walked out of the classroom.

Reese quickly put her wand away when Professor Duskurk ordered them to. And, when he stated what there homework would be, she pulled her parchment and quill back out and jotted it down before standing up and gathering her things. "Bye Jake," she said to her brother before heading towards the door. "Bye Professor!" With that, Reese Upstead disappeared from the classroom.

Thanks goodness that was O-V-E-R!

Arya didn't have time to say bye to Spencer before he was back in the box on the Professor's desk. But her frown turned upside down when he said that class was over. Quickly writing down the homework she got up and ran out of the classroom.

Before she could scream in frustration at the spider it was cast away from her table into the Professor's box. Complaining under her breath Allison jotted down her homework and cursed her wand all the way out the door. It was her wand's fault of course that she wasn't able to cast the curse. Not herself for not knowing her hate, not her mother for teaching her that hate was not something valuable, nor the Professor's who intimidated the heck out of her. It was the wands fault. Period.

Oh. So just because he checked the spiders still didn't answer his what if question. Legend shrugged it off THIS ONCE because class was over. This class had been... different. Legend really didn't know how to describe it since he didn't agree with alot of what Duskurk was saying but the using the curses and stuff were..... interesting and strange. "Bye Sir!" He said as he strolled out of the class room, not bothering to write down the two questions. He could get the homework from someone like....Jack.

This spider scared Choluna to death! She didn't want to look at its big beady eyes! So she took out her wand, and yelled "Cruci- AAHHHH!!! It's coming at me!" She saw some people look around and giggle a little bit, for she was terrified of spiders! "Why do we have to do this? Why can't we just step on it and squash it?" mumbled Choluna under her breath! Ok, I have to do this thought Choluna! So she stared the creepy little thing in the eye (or eyes) and shouted "CRUCIO!!!" Still nothing! "I HATE YOU!!! YOU STUPID THING!!!! CRUCIO!!!" And for a second, the spider felt as if it was suffering, but then Choluna felt so bad for the spider, and it looked relaxed! Hmm.. interesting!

Oh! Class over already? Choluna jotted down her homework on a piece of paper. Then she looked at the spider, gave him a raspberry, said "Stupid, creepy insects! Yuck!", then walked away!

Point in fact. He stared. Stared at the Professor. Stared at the students. Stared at the spiders being whisked away only to be saved for another bout of attempted torture. Stared at the black cloth that covered them. Then he stared at the homework board.

Pleasure from the crucio curse? He supposed that was a possible response for some people. Few people he hoped.

Copying down the homework and gathering up his things after stuffing his wand away, Sabel gave a tight smile and 'Good day Professor' before slipping out of the classroom with the rest of the students.

Despite the value he had on learning, he hoped no student would ever be successful on those poor spiders.
