Neptune stopped in the middle of the corridor and stared sadly down at her boot. She'd suspected since she came back inside that something was amiss, but couldn't quite place it.

But here was the culprit. A missing puffball.

She sat down right where she was and pulled off both boots. Then she stared at them as if the world had just ended.

It had been a while since Raiden had last wandered around the halls. He'd taken to spending most of his time either on the grounds, in class, or in his common room. The places that put him farthest from... well the areas where he could stumble across that certain someone that he didn't want to talk to.

However... well he couldn't let that stop him from doing stuff, right? Right, of course. Yes. Plus, he'd gotten the feeling that Neptune... was a bit miffed at him for something. Which was strange, as he hadn't done anything, but... hmmm.

...speak of the witch, and apparently she'd appear. She was... sitting on the floor, shoes in her hands, only socks covering her little feet. And looking like some major tragedy had just taken place.

"Are you alright?" he asked as he approached, squatting down next to her. "Why are you on the floor, you didn't hurt yourself or anything, did you?"

Because there were very, very few reasons Neptune would be sitting on the floor.

"No," Neptune sighed LOUDLY, sadly, end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it-ly. "I did not hurt myself. But I hurt my boot." She was UPSET over the boot, obviously, and didn't even GRIN or try to TOUCH Raiden.

The missing puff was a clear and definite tragedy.

She... what?

Raiden looked at the boot in question. How one could hurt a boot was beyond him. They weren't made of leather, so she couldn't scuff them, and they didn't look particularly dirty or anything. Then again, it was possible she'd separated the sole from the... boot part, or stepped on something and gotten a hole in it... maybe she counted stepping in gum as hurting her boot? But if she'd stepped in gum, she wouldn't be holding them, would she.

"What do you mean you hurt your boot?" he asked, holding out his hand for it. "Did you tear it or something?"

Shoes could be fixed! Surely there was a spell or something, to fix whatever she'd done to it.

Neptune picked up the complete boot, the right one and put it in Raiden's lap. "This boot is complete."

She switched the good boot for the SAD boot - it went into his lap, the ball-less boot.

"This boot is not. See?" Neptune FINALLY looked up at Raiden with her baby blues. She... actually looked tearful. Or at the brink of tears.

"Ahhh, I see it now." Nod. He poked one of the puff-balls on the complete one. "You're missing one of these. How long ago did it fall off? Did you notice it?"

That was an easier problem to fix than others, most likely. Raiden knew absolutely nothing of fixing shoes, but surely it was easier to find a spell to make a puff-ball than it was to rejoin a shoe to its sole or mend a tear.

That look.

"Don't be like that, Neptune. It's fiiiiiine. I'll fix it for you, okay?" Why was she so sad over a shoooooe. It could be fixed, stop being sad, Neptuuuuuuune.

Mental whining ensued.

"Here, here. Don't be sad, okay?" He dug in his pocket; there was candy in there. He knew there was. He'd been... leaving it at the Slytherin House Table over the past few days, among other places. He'd bought too much. Too much candy. Sigh. "Here."

Neptune gave Raiden a LONG LOOK. "You're giving a Bott a chocolate frog? Don't you know that's one of our biggest competitors in sales every year? With their ridiculous cards?" She was quoting her older brother, verbatim. But still.

At least it was a gift. She took it and put it in her good boot for safe keeping.

"I don't know where I lost it. It's lost though, I know it. It's just a little thing and I was outside walking around."

Oh yep. The eyes welled up and prepared to spew.

"Well I figure you'd already have enough beans, what with that being what your family makes." He shrugged. At least while she was on about that, she wasn't making the 'about to cry' face.

Not that she didn't go right back to it as soon as she put the... frog in her boot.

Ewie. Boot-flavoured chocolate frog?

"Well, we'll just have to make a new one then, right?" His own eyes went all wide when she looked at him with 'on the verge of tears' eyes again. If she cried, he would probably die. "We can go look in a book, or ask one of the professors maybe? There's spells for all sorts of things, I can probably transfigure a puff ball for your shoe for you."

It was a small thing, after all. Probably easy to do. They'd transfigured more complex things! It wasn't that hard, right? Right.

"Ola's boots," Neptune pointed at them one at a time. "Ola's. She smells funny, but I cleaned them and brought them. And she's still at home." Neptune inched towards Raiden JUST an itty bitty bit. CLEARLY one couldn't just replace one of Ola's puffballs.

"Ola." Raiden had no idea who Ola was, but apparently Neptune had taken her boots. And now there was a puff-ball missing, and... well Ola would probably notice that when Neptune got home, wouldn't she.

Hmmmm.

"Do you want to go looking for it? We could retrace your steps... it would probably take a while, and we might not find it, especially since you were outside... but we could try." She looked so sad. Stop looking so saaaaaaaaad. "If you don't want to try and make a new one, that is..."

The library was closer and didn't require hours of wandering around staring at the ground. But if it was that important that she have the original one, and it kinda looked like she really really wanted the original one, then... well he could practise his summoning spell a bit, couldn't he.

"Alright." Raiden pushed himself up off the floor and got back on his feet. Looking down at her, he held out one hand. "Come on. I can't take you home, but I can fix your shoe for you. Will you be happy then?"

Because with her pouting and sadfacing, he couldn't smile either, and... well the pouting. Pouting was definitely that thing that messed up his head and made him want to fix it.

"If I fix it, you have to smile. Alright?"

"She'll know the difference," and that was kind of the whole point. Neptune missed her sister and wanted to take her boots home to show her how she 1. stole them and 2. messed them up.

Neptune put her forehead in Raiden's outstretched hand. Woe. She was woeful. He wasn't taking her home, so she wasn't going.

"How will she know the difference?" Was this Ola person really that detail-oriented? No, that was moving past detail-oriented and right into downright insane observation skills. "Even if I make it look exactly the same as the other one?"

She was really upset. Over a little puff-ball. Raiden chewed on his lip, just standing there for a second with her forehead in his hand. What was he meant to do about this? She couldn't go home. It was only November. Christmas break wasn't for another month and a half.

"Neptune, you can't go home yet." Guh. Whyyyy. Raiden knelt down again, taking his hand away from her forehead and taking her chin. "Look. Neptune, look at me."

Or don't. Cos... he really had no idea what he was going to say when she did look at him. She couldn't go home yet. It wasn't time for it.

Neptune DID look up to Raiden as he requested. Her little lip wibbled dangerously. "She'd know because I'd tell her. I'd tell her to make her mad or sad or just anything." A reaction from her little sister. Who knew that Neptune maybe actually in minuscule ways MIGHT have loved her little sister.

She was not actually going to cry. Tears and snot did not make this Bott look hot. Or, she was going to try to NOT cry. "But I want to go home." Neptune wrapped her little fingers around Raiden's wrist and scooted towards him. "You can come with me."

Oh Merlin her lip. Her lip was wibbling. And she still looked as if she was going to cry and all things magical HELP HIM if she did. He had really not expected this at all when he'd decided to go for a walk.

"I know you want to go home," he said quietly, "But you can't just yet. We still have classes..."

Which probably didn't matter to her much, but he was a fifth year. OWLs were coming up, he couldn't cut out on classes for weeks at a time. Neither could she, really.

"Look... If you wait just a bit longer, 'til it's time for the holidays... I promise. You can go home, and I'll go with you if you want. And I'll explain to Ola what happened to her boots, too. Then maybe she won't get too mad?"

Hopefully Ola wasn't an older sister with tiny feet and an angry disposition. And what was he even saying this for - what if her family members were all like her? Overwhelming, they'd be.

It was the pouting and wibbling. He was sure of it. Otherwise he'd neeeeever-

Well okay, he probably would anyway, if it made her happy. Just like he'd do for anyone else he liked.

"We can still fix it for her, even if she'll know the difference. That way she'd know you didn't mean to break it, and you tried to make it better."

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Neptune's wibble ceased and she smiled up at Raiden. It was a tired smile, like she had to physically exert energy to make it happen, but a smile nonetheless. "You'll love it at home. We should go owl Randall and Mother right now to let them know and prepare for us!" And, just because she could.... "And we'll send these," the offensive marred up boots, "back to Ola. It'll probably make her mad."

Which was, in fact, the whole point. Attention from her sister.

Man. What had he done. He'd just... agreed to go to Neptune's family's house. Without knowing anything about her family, or if they'd even want him there. At least he knew his father wasn't expecting him home...

"Are you sure it'll be alright with them? They won't mind?" He'd not met Randall, had he? For some reason he was imagining someone who looked like Davis... "I don't want to impose on them or anything."

Oh dear Merlin. His mouth got out of control when pouting and wibbling was involved.

"Er... should we fix them first, then? So she doesn't get mad?"

"Who cares?" Neptune shrugged, getting up to her feet. She wiggled her toes through her socks, noting how COLD these stone floors were without shoes on. She shivered from head to toe in one of those involuntary SHUDDERy.. things.

It didn't matter if they cared. He was HER guest and her family would embrace that. The whole thing wasn't really even worth thinking about for another moment - so Neptune didn't. More important things to handle here.

"No, no, no. No you don't get it. I - well this is a secret. Can you keep secrets?" Neptune looked at him doubtfully.

"Well... I kinda... do... a bit." Why was she shivering? It wasn't really that cold, was it? He looked down at her feet; oh. Socks... probably didn't keep warmth in her toes very well, without shoes. She should put them back on, at least til she went to the common room to get different ones... "Neptune, you should put those back on, you're shivering."

And even if he gave her the thin jacket he was wearing, it wouldn't make her warm, since the cold stone floor was sapping all the heat from her toes. And... well he didn't have extra shoes on him. He was pretty sure she wouldn't want to wear his anyway. His canvas sneakers weren't exactly the pretty shoes she seemed to like.

"Of course I can keep secrets." He blinked. "Who would I tell anyway?"

Neptune Bott was NOT putting on less-than-whole shoes. She would face frost bite before defiling her feet that way. "You shouldn't care. It'll be fun! If Dell says it's alright, I'll show you where the BEANS are made." OoOOOo he was excited now, right? WHO wouldn't BE??

GIGGLE.

She grinned like the devil, a pair of imaginary horns poking through her soft blond hair. "I don't actually like my sister very much. She's SO weird and not like the rest of us AT ALL...," and clearly THIS was the secret part, "I kind of miss her weirdness though. I'd like to go see her. But since I can't, let's send her messed up boots back to her."

If Neptune couldn't be there in person to bother her sister, then well, the boots would have to do the work for her.

Well, that would be fun. Seeing where they made their candy was interesting; Raiden had no idea how the whole process worked so, it would be a learning experience. That was... if the family really wouldn't mind him being there. Still wasn't sure if she was right about that.

She didn't like her sister? Whaaaat? Surely she was kidding. Everyone loved their siblings.

"Well... Neptune, if you miss her, then that means you like her more than you think." He looked at her feet; still no shoes on them. "Can you please put them back on? At least til you go back up to the common room and get different ones."

He really really did not want to watch her shiver and have frozen feet.
