Professor Duskurk stepped into his classroom and banished the desks and chairs. It was standing room only for this class...
NOTE: For those just joining us, please go to the OOC thread in the classroom and find a dueling partner. Then, you may come back here and practice dueling.
UPDATE: Lesson has ended. Homework is as follows and will be due one week from the date of this post.

"Non-verbals..." she muttered quietly, writing it down in her notebook. "Key to a succeeessssffuuullll....duel. Got it." Now she just had to practice and perfect them! Nooot a problem.
But THAT was a problem. Pair up with someone three years older?! This guy was definitely crazy!! And cool. Dueling an older student. Something she has yet to do here, aaand, Destiny already had a partner it seemed. Oh well, it's not like Destiny was three years older then her. Dang...

"Rictusempra."
Just that.
Destiny smiled when the Prefect introduced herself. The name reminded her of something shiny, which cause her to stare at that Prefect badge again. 'I'm Destiny..Shepard.' But for some reason she felt Gold already knew that..Prefects are supposed to know everything, right?
Eeeek!
Destiny knew the disarming spell was going to fail, and fail it did. It wasn't her fault she forgot all the spells she ever learned, except for those cleaning spells..They wouldn't help her now. The Professor should have taught them some spells before he made them duel. For a second there, she remembered he had attempted to teach them a spell.
O.o
Less thinking more action! Before Destiny had even the slightest chance of using the shield charm, she was hit with a..tickling charm?
HAHAHAHAHA
How was she supposed to duel now?
HAHAHAHAHA
She pointed her wand, which was hard since she was laughing too hard, 'Petrificus Totalus.' She would have to thank Lawson for teaching her something last term.

Melanie made mental notes on some of the tactics the two duelers used. She jotted down some of the comments of the other spectators, but didn't make any of her own. Melanie was uncharacteristically quite as she watched the duel. As one of the students pointed out, it hardly seemed fair... what with Cela having a full blown advantage over Tibi, knowning non-verbal spells and having years more of magical education behind her.
But, Duskurk claimed that was the point. What he was saying certainly made sense. Her dad always said life wasn't fair... All parents said that. Sadly enough, it was the truth. Now, according to Professor Duskurk, the rest of the class would have to face the unfairness of it all, as well, in their own duels.
She wasn't too bad with her wand, but she wasn't exactly wonderful either... Melanie knew she couldn't be too great at dueling yet if non-verbals were as vital as the Professor said. She'd never even attempted one, being a fourth year. Of course, it probably wouldn't matter if she was paired with a first year. According to the Duskurk's guidelines to ensure their duel was unjust, she needed to duel a seventh year or a firstie...
And she was actually fairly excited about it... though the slightest bit nervous at the same time. "I'm a fourth year!" Melanie announced promptly, scanning the room for either the youngest members of the student body at Hogwarts...or the oldest.
Someone needed a fourth year! Melanie whipped her head over as she heard the soft whimper to see a small girl... She looked young; probably a firstie.
"Me! I'll duel with you!" she offered enthusiastically. Melanie made her way over to the girl, wand held tightly in her right hand. "Pleased to meet you...Melanie Lockhart, Fourth Year, Hufflepuff." It was nice to have manners before you hexed someone, right? Not really knowing what else to say to the girl, Melanie took a few steps back, toward a more open space so they had room, and then she bowed.
The younger of the two would at least get the advantage of casting the first spell of the duel.
A nearby voice made her open her eyes. Oh no she'd have to duel after all.
With scared wide eyes she looked over the girl who approached her.
Immediately her nervousness calmed just a tad, she seemed nice and had manners! Smiling timidly as the girl introduced herself, she decided to do the same.
"Nice ttto meet you too, Melanie. I'm..I'm,"...nervous scared out my mind, going to faint this very second..."Ivory, first year Ravenclaw."
Trying to shrug off the nervousness, Ivory reached her hand into her robes and withdrew her wand.
Immediately she felt the familiar warmth spread through her body and pinpoint in her hand, and as usual a small blue flame blossomed at the tip of her wand.
It was a flame that never failed to amaze her with it different blue hues and center that flashed purple and white like the hottest part of a blaze. It was made of Hawthorn and Ivy, with a core of Gubraithian Fire. She’d experimented and so far it didn’t burn anything and was only slightly warm to the touch. Still always cautious, she’d gone to the library and researched an Extinguishing Charm just in case it ever did.
Wand now in hand, she pushed back her robes and tried to get into a defensive pose.
Wait, how exactly did one look defensive? Her mind conjured up an image of her holding up her arms in front of her face while whimpering in a corner, screaming ‘Don’t hurt me!’ Hmmm that probably wasn’t it. She had another image of her merely crouching into a little ball…hmmm. Well she was really small at 4’3” so maybe she would just duck every attack! Yes, yes…that just might work.
Following Melanie to a more open spot, she took her bow.
Knowing she didn’t have much to her advantage being just a first year, her mind whirled, searching her memory for something that would give her an edge
Height advantage..nope.
Age advantage..triple no.
Speed advantage…nope short legs.
Nonverbal advantage….heck no.
It seemed what she could use was her small size and hopefully her quick thinking and that was merely assuming Melanie was off her game. Which odds were she wasn’t.
To anyone who was watching, she appeared scared and ill prepared and sick to her stomach, but inside never mind she was that inside as well. Even her shields, although they were quite strong (At least against water, tacks, and mucus and gum) had not been practiced to encompass a large area. So that left her where….
Trying to think outside the box, she thought quickly. Well, she’d always loved geometry and this was all about angles and precision, right? So technically if she followed the angle of her opponent’s wand she could imagine an invisible line, so that if the time came to protect herself, she could simply cast a concentrated shield charm instead of one that encompassed her entire body which she couldn’t do anyway and would just waste her energy. Nodding to herself, she decided this would in fact be her tactic. That is if she was conscious long enough to have one.
Realizing that she was never going to be able to pull this off with her every spell being overheard, she promptly cast "Muffliato," then lowered her head, thank Merlin for the gossip loving girls who had taught her that one. Nevertheless, she hide her mouth as she said her next incantation, juuuust in case Melanie was a lip reader. “Stupefy.” One could never really know after all.
Moving to her right, she moved her wand in the smooth and quick upward arc giving it the tiniest flick as she pronounced the shield charm as firmly but quietly as she could, "Protego!"
Keeping her small shield tight and concentrated, she held her wand at the ready, prepared to block the imaginary line of attack that would come from Melanie’s wand....and try not to puke all over the floor.

Fred had no partner and usually always had trouble finding one but this time one seemed to be calling for him. Fred being a 6th year went over to young Slytherin boy and said, "I'll be you're partner if you like.".
Evan turned to the voice. A sixth year? A huge moment of disappointment. And he'd hoped for the professor to allow him to be partners with a firstie. Now this guy probably knew non-verbals and could beat him in a second. Nevertheless he had no choice but accept, right? He nodded and walked backwards. Getting his wand from his leg holster, he waited for the guy to bend or something. That was what they did at the beginning, right?
Jake looked around the room, as every found partners. He wondered how this would work. He wasn't very good at dueling in the first place, and now he had to duel people older then his. This was not going to be a good class, not a good class at all.
Jake looked around the room once more. Then he asked the room, "any fifth years still need a partner?" He very much hoped there wouldn't be. But it was class, he had to participate.

Chris walked up two a second year he thought and smiled. "Hello there, Im Chris! Would you like to be my partner, i dont have one yet." he stuck out his hand to shake the younger boys. This boy looked nice. Hopefully he didnt have to hit him with any spells.
Arya listened to the converstions, taking note on all the technics she could use. She was listening do hard she almost Duskurk was there. She jumped at the sound of his voice, turning in his direction. Ugh, she had to duel with a older student. She knew it was coming but she hoped it would be with someone her year like Allison or Ivory.
She looked around the classroom taking a deep sigh, she didn't see any forth years that she knew. I wish Sabel was here. He would be a good dueling partner."Anyone wanna be my partner...I'ma first year."
Kellen was stopped from asking Ian to be his partner as he heard Duskurk tell them to pair off with someone much older or younger than they were. Well, wasn't that just fantastic news? He sighed and looked around the room, eventually spotting a girl that he definitely remembered from somewhere. Several somewheres...
Arya! That was it. The girl with the kneazle kitten. Wasn't she one of Sabel's friends? Oh well, Sabel didn't appear to be here at the moment, so he avoided the students already dueling and made his way over to her.
"Hey, Arya." He smiled, "I can't say I'll give you much of a challenge, but would you like to be my partner for this?"

He chuckled, starting with a petrificus was an offensive plan. With a flick of his wand he created a defensive shield. "Oppugno Avis," he said, firing an eagle at the lad. At least it was just one.

For a moment, Kiri entertained the thought of leaving her wand in its holster and then unsheathing it only when the girl cast her first spell. But she quickly decided against it - even if the gesture hadn't been made her look so much like a show-off, the potential for embarrassment was too big. If her Quidditch reflexes failed, or if the wand got stuck or something (even though she'd drawn it a thousand times without trouble), she'd have lost a duel with a girl three years younger in a matter of seconds. So she pulled it, pleased to see that it only took a second at most.
The girl's attack came suddenly. Kiri, in mid-sniff, was caught off-balance, but quickly regained her composure. "Protego!" she yelled, slashing her wand through the air in front of her, and the charm bounced off the shield and hit the ceiling.
The girl was fast, that much was sure, but Kiri had expected the Disarming Charm. She sent one off herself, silently - it was one of the few spells she managed to cast non-verbally. The jet of light flew in the direction of the girl, and Kiri followed it up with an Impediment Jinx, hoping that this would slow the girl down. "Impedimenta!"
Feeling the Jinx hit her in the leg, she fell backwards. 'Oh How stupid am I.' Kay thought as she rolled to her feet. "Protego!" As the sheild went up, she pointed her wand. "EVERTE STATUM!" Then "STUPETY!" Two at a time seemed like the best way. Hopeing that one of them would knock her dueling partner down. As Kay called out the last spell she dropped to her knees to make a smaller target. Holding her sheild tightly around her she waited for the next wave.

Chris looked at the boy. He looked so nervous, but Chris would have felt the same way if he had had to parnter up with a sixth year when he was really young. But he had done it with Freya before she graduated so maybe this boy would do alright!
So after shaking his hand, Chris took the appropriate amount of steps away and then turned to smile at Jake. It looked like this boy was a bit afraid to go first, oh Chris would start. Hmm what to use. Not a non-verbal just yet, he would use one next, just so the boy would get a heads up of what he was doing. The Prefect would make things more challenging later.
Pulling out his wand and then swiftly making a motion shouted. "Stupify!" he watched as the spell flew towars his partner, Jake.
A nearby voice made her open her eyes. Oh no she'd have to duel after all.

Keeping her small shield tight and concentrated, she held her wand at the ready, prepared to block the imaginary line of attack that would come from Melanie’s wand....and try not to puke all over the floor.
Melanie nodded, giving her a small smile that contained something that looked suspiciously like encouragement.
Oh dear. Poor Ivory sounded nervous... which made Melanie feel horribly guilty before she even casted anything. Maybe she would have been better off with a seventh year. Then she wouldn't feel the need to feel guilt for her opponent.
Then again, if she was dueling a seventh year she'd probably be out within the first few seconds. So... she was good where she was.
WAS being the key word there. Melanie dived away from the stunning spell just in time, hitting the ground and rolling over onto her side, like a hero in an action movie. Yes, the spell had caught her off her guard (She didn't even hear Ivory cast it! She was only able to anticipate it's arrival by the light flying toward her.)...but Melanie had quick reflexes. Thank goodness. Spotting the shield charm held aloft in front of Ivory, Melanie aimed her wand right at the girl's feet, hoping the sheild may be weaker a the edges of it's boundaries. "TAIR-an-tuh-LEG-ruh!" she pronounced clearly, biting her lip, and concentrating on... dancing. Then Melanie shifted rapidly to her feet.
"Protego!" A shield charm surrounded Melanie as she stood up, flickering for a few seconds before stabilizing.... and then disappearing. The Hufflepuff resolved to simply keep moving once she was up, to make it more difficult to aim a spell at her. She held her wand aloft, ready to dodge, or put another shield up. Should the Tarantallegra spell be effective, she would be able to shoot another offensive spell at Ivory...
If not... Well, she was doing her best to think ahead to what the Ravenclaw would do next. Melanie took a deep breath to calm herself, and a few steps backward so she could aim better if she felt the need to cast another offensive spell soon.

Arya was about to give up looking for a partner when she heard her name. Turning she saw the boy Allison said burned down his previous school. Not the first person she would choose, but he was the only fourth year around. Plus from the few times they meet he seemed fine to Arya, nice actually.
Smiling up at the boy she was glad he alteast wasn't a skilled dueler like Cela. Of course being a Ravenclaw his definition of skilled was probably diffrent from hers."I'd love to be your partner!" She began to get nervious about the duel as she flicked her wand out of its holister. It had taken her a while but she had finally found the wrist holister her brother gave her, she figured this was the best class to be wearing it.
As she walked a few paces away from Kellen she nerviously twirled the wand between her fingers, turning to face him. As she turned she went through the spells she knew deciding which one to use first. She didn't know a many spells, but the ones she did know were good enough to duel with. Closing her eyes she took a deep breath, focusing all her attention on the duel. As she opened her eyes she pointed her wand at Kellen,"Locomotor Mortis!" As the spell headed towards Kellen, she slid quickly to her right, to avoid his oncoming spell.

Quickly trying to think he shouted "Expelliarmus" He didn't what else to do. Chris felt bad as poor little Jake didn't seem ready and jumped out of the way of his spell, but was shaken of this thought when the boy shot two more at him. Chris was a bit caught off guard when the Expelliarmus was sent, and had to use a verbal sheild charm. "Protego!" the disarming spell hit it and disapeared. The next spell Chris was ready for. He watched as it came towards him and Chris spun around and with a flick of his wand a sheild appeared and the spell bounced off.
This time Chris went for a bit of suprise, continuing with the non-verbal spells. He twisted his wand around thinking, Petrificus Totalus.

Too late, Kiri remembered that, given her headache, she probably should have cast the Shield Charm again. As it was, the first one she'd used blocked the girl's first spell, but Kiri nearly dropped her wand, feeling the force of the hex in her arms.
She didn't bother casting Protego again, and jumped aside instead. The second spell went past her, but it was a close thing - only two or three centimetres past the sleeve of her robes, and what if they had caught on fire?
Pushing her hair out of her eyes, Kiri flicked her wand and cast another Disarming Spell. It probably wouldn't do much, the girl still had her shield up, but she needed a moment or two to think. If she couldn't get past the shield... Kiri pointed her wand at the ground the girl was standing on. "Glacius!" she yelled, and the worn, wooden planks on the floor were suddenly covered by a layer of ice. "Tarrrrrrrrantallegra!" she added with a flourish of her wand. Let's see her handle that combination, she thought grimly, bringing her wand up in front of her and absent-mindedly wiping her runny nose with her robe.
Barry sighed. He was a seventh so he needed a forth year. But they were pairing up with the firsties! No fair! Cowards. They couldn`t take him? Was he really that good. He walked around the room, wand out in case a spell came towards him. "Any fourth years?" he asked

No this was not going to be a good class. This was going to end badly, very badly. Jake watched as chris started to use non-verbals. his mind wandered to what spells to use next. He was again caught off gaurd, but shouted "Protego" at the last minute. This was not his day...but was any day when he had to duel 'his day'. Then he hesitated a split second and yelled "Locomotor Mortis" now wishing that he was on an even level, and able to use non-verbals

Seeing that the 1st year found a partner by the time she asked she needed a partner and there was a 7th year calling out asking for a partner. Just when she thought things were gonna be easy things become more difficult with her only prospect of a partner being a 7th year. She walked over to him hesitantly and said, "I'm a 4th year, I'll partner with you if you like.". She really did not want to but she did not see any other options.

Although I don't see any left, Allison is in need of a fourth year. ;p
Allison saw Arya walk of with fire-boy Kellen, and Ivory walk off with a Hufflepuff she had not yet met. Feeling uneasy she began to inch towards the wall of the classroom in hopes that no one would find her. She needed a fourth year student to duel with, however she had never done any dueling before in her life. Sure she had read spells and she had imagined herself casting them countless of times, yet the idea that it would actually work was quite silly.
Taking out her wand beneath the layers of clothing she was wearing, she held in to her chest in defense. She was going to die! Her mother was going to stalk down whoever harmed her! That included the DADA professor. The only sense of relief Allison felt was at the prospect she'd come back as a ghost and haunt people. Bwhaha much?

Reason: Ew. I got the wrong House.
Meh. He easily avoided at as he guessed. Well...he was a fifth year and this class was the DADA class he managed to participate in since he missed the first during the detention time. Wait...what did he say? What!!!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkk!
A big big bird was rushing towards him.!!! 'What to do?! What to do?!'. Not running around in the classroom like a coward of course so he casted the first spell occured to him that might stop the bird. ''Immobulus!!'' then while, he had time, without even looking at the bird to see if his spell worked he shot another one at Dylan ''Confundo!!''
Dylan smiled as the boy panicked at the sight of the giant bird. "Duro," he said, pointing it at the frozen bird, turning it to stone. He also cast a levitation charm on it, to throw it at Josh.
Dylan's head was clipped by a spell. He felt a bit dazed and confused. But it only lasted for a moment or so.

Chris laughed. This was fun and he hoped Jake was having fun! The prefect shouted "Protego!" as the Ravenclaws spell was blocked by his sheild. Chris though of the stinging spell, and sent one Jake's way. This was one of Chris's first duels in a long time!

Standing up, she crossed her arms and looked around. Seemed like all the older students had already paired off. And well, she didn't know any fifth years...unless Rex counted as one, but she didn't see him here. Shame. It would've been fun...
So, were they supposed to pair with other people, not three years older or younger than them if their weren't any left? Not that there could be anyone three years younger then her at the moment and standing in the class. Well, it seemed like the only option, but she didn't feel like really walking around and scouting someone out. Drawing sounded better...
But then again, it was a free duel without getting into trouble. And the Professor seemed like the kind of guy who would take points away for standing around and doing nothing...
