Maidee was still irritated by the immaturity of the Slytherin class. Taking a few deep breaths, she cleared her mind and opened her lesson door for the older students. The ones that would REALLY be challenged today.
She set the supplies on the tables and took a seat in her chair, going over the lab she had set up for today.

"I could help you with your Astronomy NEWT," she told him, as she watched him place the flashlight on the block.
"Yep!" Gold nodded, in response to his question and, reaching for the masking tape, began to work on the flashlight. She taped it down, to ensure that it could not roll around, and then straightened up again. They had to prepare the surface now, did they not?
Ah yes, they did have to do that.
"Tape a sheet of graph paper to a firm surface..." Gold glanced around. "Firm surface? I don't have a large book, there must be a cutting board around here, somewhere." She frowned, but the frown quickly faded away, as she noticed that there was a cutting board, on their table. "Here," she handed it to Mr. T. "Would you like to tape the graph paper to it? Should be stiff enough to tilt. The paper, I mean."
... and now where was that Scotch tape? They needed it, for this step. Gold finally spotted it, passed it to Mr. T, and began to organize their table a little, while Mr. T worked on the graph paper.
Organization helps, right?
Right.
"Of course you will help me." He smiled at her. They both were on the same page, and that was awesome. Him and Miss G got along great. hehe.
He watched as she taped the flashlight to the table and then searched for a firm surface for the next step.

"There."
Geometry stuff on one side; tapes on top of the graph paper; notebook by her side and ... yep, their workstation looked mighty better, now! Not cluttered, that was certain. Gold beamed at it, glad that she had decided to organize the equipment they were working with.
"Yay!" She said, when Mr. T had taped the paper to the cutting board. She took a tiny step forward to switch on the flashlight, and watched its illumination light up their table. It wasn't that bright, but it certainly made everything shinier -- and shiny things were pretty.
Hehe.
She placed the graph paper vertically in front of the flashlight, and then slowly began to move it closer to the source of illumination. The light seemed to dance on the surface of the paper, forming shadows and shapes and... aha! A circle! It did not look the right size, though. Sort of distorted, too. Gold frowned, and moved the paper away, a bit.
"Mr. T, could you please measure this circle?" she asked, removing her hand from the graph paper. "I think it is two to three inches in diameter, but it would be best to be sure." She was glad for his company. It made everything a whole lot easier.

Oooh! Shiny!
He watched as she made the flashlight made light dance on the paper. It was pretty. And then a circle formed even though it wasn't a proper one. And that sucked because he wanted it to be an awesome circle.
Then she asked him to measure the circle.
He took the protractor from her and started to try to measure the thing. He was never good at this kind of thing.

"Ummm. I think you're right. I'm not sure."
Gold blinked.
"Mr. T!" How was he going to measure a circle with a protractor? Silly Mr. T. "You can't measure a circle with a protractor, you do it with a ruler." She smiled at him, and picked up a ruler.
"Like this."
Careful not to shift the paper from its position as she worked, Gold placed the '0' mark of the ruler at the top-center point of the circle. "See?" she told him, pointing to where the bottom of the circle coincided with a certain reading on the ruler.
"Two and a half inches, so we should be fine."
She removed the ruler from the circle, and placed it at a different point, to measure the distance between the graph paper and the block of wood. "Mr. T?" She looked up. "Could you double-check this measurement for me?" she asked him. "The distance from the edge of the graph paper, to the block of wood, I mean."

Then they could note it down.
Mmmm.
Oops. This was embarrassing. But then he had always been bad at math. "It wouldn't surprise you if I told you I failed math, right?" Oh well. At least he had her here to fix his silly mistakes.
He watched her and saw what she was doing. Okay, so they were sorta close to her guess. She was clever.
Then she moved the ruler to measure from the paper to the block of wood.
Lina attached her graph paper to her sketch book and started sticking it with spell-o-tape. Wonderful stuff that was. Once she was done, she decided to tape her rular to the side as well, just out of the way. Then she marked up the graph paper to help her do some easier measurements. Just small marks, of course. "You got it, Raiden?"

"Four inches."
"Maybe you got confused because protractors are used in a lot of geometrical measurements, too?" Gold asked, with a shrug. "I mean, that is how you measure angles."
"Anyway, it's absolutely alright, Mr. T." She gave him a smile. "I really wouldn't have been able to do this alone." Well, she could have had, but it would not have been half as much fun.
Not to mention, the latter parts were ... not this easy.
ANDD! Four inches?
"Righto!"
Gold dipped her fancy-topped quill in pink ink, and jotted down the measurement in their lab notebook. "We have to keep the graph paper at this distance, for all testing," she said, as she closed the notebook, and looked down at the paper the Professor had handed them. The one that contained all the instructions and stuff.
Have a helper hold the graph paper vertically at the starting distance in front of the flashlight.
"Looks like we have to test the surface," Gold said, frowning a bit. This was where the more complicated steps began, and she was not so sure if she liked them that much. "Would you look like to hold the graph paper, or draw and stuff, Mr. T?"
...the instructions said to tape down the flashlight?
Right well. Raiden wasn't going to do that with his wand. SO, retrieving a flashlight from the professor's stash of flashlights, he cast a quick sticking charm and stuck the thing on top of the block.
"The little switch..." he muttered. This flashlight was weird, where was the... oh. Blushing slightly, Raiden pushed the little button and the flashlight turned on; it was, thankfully, pointed away from his face, and he didn't go blind. Yay him. He looked at Lina and grinned. "Flashlight's okay, right? Real Muggle experience and all that?"
He gave the button a poke and the light went out again. Hehe.
"Now we just have to..." he looked at the paper again. "A two to three inch circle of light?"
She nodded and adjusted the graph paper in front of the flashlight and shifted a little so she could somewhat see it. "Okay, you look at it and turn on the light. Let me know if I need to move the paper closer or further from the light."
Er right. Raiden gave the button another poke and the light flared to life. He probably shouldn't have been amusing himself by turning it off and on, but... well, it was amusing, so there. Heh.
"A little bit farther," Raiden mumbled, tilting his head as he stared at the circle. It was too smaaaaaaaall. "We have to mark it then, right?"
She nodded again and pulled the paper back. "We've got to write down the distance from the block to the paper, and then draw the outline of the light circle."
"Hmmm that should be good." Raiden picked up the ruler and carefully held it across the circle, just to check. It was just over two and three-quarters inches, so... they were in the right place, yes. "And... distance from the block to the paper, then?"
He laid the ruler down on the table and squinted down at the numbers. It read... Five and a quarter inches. The boy made a quick note of that on a bit of paper and looked at Lina again.
"Trace it now, then?"
Well. Raiden was not good at circles, but he'd give it a shot. Heh.

She looked up at him, as she spoke.
Ze difficult stuff was HERE!
Well, he was relieved that she wasn't making fun of him at least. He smiled weakly at her. She was probably right. But moving on.
He watched her record everything in her notebook. She was so serious. It was adorable.
"I'll hold the paper." He wasn't so good at the drawing stuff.
He took the graph paper - making sure that it was held vertically - and put it at what he saw was the right starting distance. He was pretty sure that he was right at least.

"This good, Miss G?"
Gold nodded when Torin took the graph paper, and held it, the way it was said to, in the instructions.
"Wonderful, Mr. T."
She beamed at him as she spoke, then focused her attention back on to the flashlight and stuff. Making sure the flashlight in question was not out - she had not turned it off, after the last time she had switched it on, even though the desire to click it on and off, on and off, was pretty great - she picked up her fancy-topped quill and got down to work.
She began by drawing around the outline of the light that fell on the graph paper. It wasn't a very perfect outline, but it was good and - Gold hoped - would serve their purpose well enough. That done, she drew the line from the circle, too. Therrrre!
"No tilt," she said out loud, straightening up. "Mr. T, do you know how to use a light meter?" She was glad she had taken that muggle photography course, now. That did not mean she was perfect with stuff like this, though -- and that was exactly why she turned to Torin, now. "Wait, are you pureblood?" Because, if he was, then that would mean he probably did not even know what a light meter was.
"I mean, I wouldn't expect you to know how to use it, then," Gold said, frowning a bit. "Or if you're not that interested in photography...." she was talking to herself, now. Meh. Snapping out of it, Gold looked up again. Is it okay if I do the next step?" she asked him, politely. "If you want to use the light meter, I can hold the graph paper."
She would have to hold it exactly as - and where - he had, though. That could get a bit tricky, but Gold was sure she could pull through. "If not, I could measure the brightness and stuff, instead. Up to you, really."

Torin watched her draw, rather engrossed in what they were doing. This was sorta fun, though he didn't really get this Astronomy stuff. He got planets sorta. And stars. But all this other stuff was really odd and confusing to him.
"What's a light meter?" He frowned. "And no, I'm a Muggle Born."

Light meter?
Ah well, forget it.
"It's a device," Gold told him, with half a smile. "It can measure the amount of light and stuff. Forget it, you wouldn't know. I mean, I only know it because I studied photography, last year." Muggle photography, to be more precise. "Back at my old school."
She picked up the light meter as she spoke, and showed it to Torin. "See? I wonder how it works here, though. I mean, there's a lot of magic in the air." Professor McFarlane must have ensured it did, of course. She would be good at that. She was a professor, after all.
But, that was not the point, here. The point was that she had a task to do. With the help of the light meter, Gold measured the precise brightness of the light inside the outline, and wrote the reading down in their lab notebook. Then she turned to look at Mr. T.
"Let me hold the graph paper, for a while," she grinned at him, picking up the protractor, and placing it next to the graph paper, which she tilted exactly ten degrees. "You can do the next step." What was it, anyway? Gold glanced down at the sheet of instructions, to see what it said.
Use your pencil to draw around the outline of the light on the same piece of graph paper. Again, draw a line from this outline and note the angle for this outline on the graph paper.

Mr. T to the rescue!
Hehe.
Well, that explained it. He had never studied photography, so he had no idea. He just owned a camera. But that didn't really matter right now because she was doing the reading herself.
What would he do without her?
Oooh, it was his turn to do something again. He let her take the paper from him, and looked at the instruction sheet. He was pretty sure that he understood that step. And if he didn't, she could just fix it for him. hehe.
He drew around the outline, and then drew a line from it.
"This good?" he asked before even bothering to pick up the protractor.

"Okay then, I'll read the introduction and we'll get started,:
SPOILER!!: I've copied it from the webpage, so you don't HAVE to read this if you don't like.
Where most people live on Earth, summers are hot and filled with many hours of strong sunlight, while winters are cold due to shortened hours of daylight and weak sunlight. You might think that the extreme heat of summer and the icy cold of winter have something to do with how close Earth is to the Sun, but actually, Earth's orbit is almost circular around the Sun, so there is very little difference in the distance from Earth to the Sun throughout the year. So, what are the reasons for the seasons, if it's not the distance from the Sun? One big part of the answer is that Earth is tilted on an axis.
What is an axis? Picture an imaginary stick going through the north and south poles of Earth. Earth rotates about this axis every 24 hours. However, this axis isn't straight up and down as Earth goes through its orbit about the Sun. Instead, it is tilted approximately 23 degrees. The degree of tilt varies by about 1.5 degrees every 41,000 years, which you can read more about in the Bibliography, below. We can thank our relatively big Moon for keeping this degree of tilt so stable. Without the influence of our Moon's gravity, the tilt would vary dramatically, like that of a wobbling top, resulting in rapidly changing seasons that would make it difficult for life to exist on Earth. Planetary scientists think that our relatively big Moon, and the axis tilt itself, were created by enormous collisions Earth experienced early in its formation 4.5 billion years ago.
How does the tilt of the axis create seasons? The tilt changes how the sunlight hits Earth at a given location. As shown in Figure 1, Earth's axis (the red line) remains fixed in space. It always points in the same direction, as Earth goes through its orbit around the Sun.
When it is summer in North America, the top part of the axis (the north pole) points in the direction of the Sun, and the Sun's rays shine directly on North America; while in South America, the axis is tipped away from the Sun and the Sun's rays hit Earth on a slant. So, when it is summer in North America, it is winter in South America. When it is winter in North America, the north pole is tipped away from the Sun, and the Sun's rays hit the Earth on a slant there; meaning it is summer in South America, because the Sun's rays hit Earth more directly in that hemisphere. As for the intermediate seasons, spring and fall, these are seasons when neither the top, nor the bottom, of Earth's axis are pointed in the direction of the Sun, days and nights are of equal length, and both the top half and the bottom half of Earth get equal amounts of light.
Slanted rays are weaker rays because they cover a larger area and heat the air and surface less than direct rays do. You can see this if you shine a flashlight on a large ball. If you point the flashlight directly at the ball, it makes a bright, circular spot on the ball; however, if your point the flashlight at the edge of the ball, the light makes a duller, more oval-looking spot on the ball. The same thing happens with Earth and the Sun—imagine the ball is Earth and the flashlight is the Sun. In this astronomy science fair project, you'll investigate how tilting a surface affects how light rays hit that surface.
If, for some reason, you do not have a ruler, protractor, or graph paper, I've got extras. And don't worry about the muggle 'flashlight' simply use 'lumos' with your wands. If, however, you want to have the muggle experience, I do have a few flashlights as well.
When you have read over the lab at least twice, you may begin."
It was going to be easy? Apparently, Professor McFarlane didn't know Reese Upstead very well. This girl should have been sitting in the beginner's class instead of the advanced one, but she had already made the decision to come here, so she had to deal with it. Sighing, she took her copy of the lab and scanned over it. It was a good thing she didn't have to know Astronomy well to do what the instructions told her to do. Following instructions was easy peasy.
When the Professor read the introduction out loud, she looked up from her paper and listened as she talked about Earth's axis and...yeaaah, she got lost after the first paragraph. Looking away from the Professor, she glanced back down at her instructions, looking at the part that told you what materials you needed. Ruler, protractor, graph paper. If she had that stuff or not, it was a mystery to her.
She opened her bag and began to search, but the only thing that came out of that search was a ruler. Well, at least she had one of the materials needed! She was kinda prepared, which was a good thing.
After the introduction was read, she quickly stood up, gathered all her things, and then she headed over to Jack. She got dibs on the smart Astronomy kid! It was always a good thing your boyfriend was a lot smarter in the subject you were horrible at. "Can we be partners?" The Slytherin asked, but before he could answer, she took a seat right next to him at the table. She knew he was going to say 'yes' since he loved her too much to not be partners with her, so she didn't really need to stand there and wait for his already known answer. "I got a ruler, but I don’t have a protractor...or graph paper, though," she added.

Jack was glaring over at Torin, who had shone the flashlight in his face numerous times without realizing while he was playing with it, but when he heard Reese approaching, his gears immediately switched in his brain and he turned and smiled at her. "Sure!" he said. He was glad that he was partnered with Reese, since he hadn't gotten the chance to talk to her since the whole missing prefect badge incident...which he did NOT like thinking about. Shudder.
Although, not to sound braggy or anything, he wondered why no one had asked him sooner. He was super good at this class! He reached into his bag and pulled out his protractor, then pulled out a couple of pieces of crumpled up graph paper before finding a clean, smooth one. "AHA! I knew I had a piece in here somewhere," he said with a grin. "I had extras from Arithmancy."
"Alright sooooooo we need to set the flashlight up..." he said. He quickly ran and got a flashlight from the ones that the Professor had provided and walked back. He examined it--ok, how did someone turn this on again?! If Torin could do it, he surely could...after a few moments of trying to figure it out, he moved to big black switch on the side and TADA! They had light!
"Ok so after I tape it down, what's next?" he asked. He grabbed the spell-o-tape and quickly taped it down on top of the desk.

Reese was rereading the instructions as Jack was digging through his bag trying to find a nice, smooth clean piece of graph paper. Okay, maybe following instructions wasn't as easy as she thought it would be. She ran her hand through her hair a couple times, and then she looked over at Jack who had just found a smooth sheet of a graph paper.
When Jack mentioned needing a flashlight, she opened her mouth to recommend using 'lumos', but the Gryffindor had already started towards the front to get a muggle flashing. She guessed that he wanted to try the muggle experience of this lab, which didn't bother her at all. As she waited for him to come back, she began to doodle a few little hearts on her paper, but she didn't get to finish her third heart completely before Jack came back. She sat her pen down on the table and watched as he tried to figure out how to turn the flashlight on, letting a few giggles out here and there. Was it really THAT hard to figure out how to turn one of those things one?
"Hmmm," she pondered as she looked back down at the instructions. "We have to tape the graph paper on a firm surface, like a book." After saying that, she dug through her own bag and pulled out her charms book. That would work, right? She took Jack's graph paper, and then she used the spell-o-tape he just used on the flashlight to tape the graph paper on her charms book. "There," she announced as she sat the book on the table.
"Now, we have to move it in front of the flashlight until a medium sized circle appears." She picked the book back up after reading the next step, and then she placed it in front of the flashlight and moved it back and forth until what she thought a perfect medium-sized circle appeared.

Heh.
"Yup!" She peeked over the edge of the paper, looking down at the little circle of light. Hey, if they drew little legs, it could be a light crab! How cute! "And label it zero degrees. Make a note of how bright it is, too."

Jack smiled. "Looks good!" he said. "Ok, now we need to measure how far away from the flashlight the paper is..." he said, looking at the instructions and using his pointer finger to keep his spot on the page.
He took the ruler and held it up so he could read it easier. "That looks like...just a bit over half a foot. So about 7 inches away," he said. That made sense...after all their flashlight was pretty bright and needed to be just a BIT futher away in order to get the correct sized circle.
"Now we need to outline the circle on the paper," he said, glancing down at the instructions again. "Do you want to do that?" he asked with a smile. This experiment was actually pretty easy, and fun!

Reese kept the book in place while Jack measured the how far away it was from the flashlight and when he was done, she slowly took her hands off the book to where it was still balancing it's self up. If nobody touched it, hopefully it wouldn't fall! "Are we suppose to record this stuff?" She asked. The Slytherin couldn't quite remember if the Professor told them to record their stuff, but she might as well do it just in case she wanted it afterwards. She grabbed her Astronomy notebook, and then she pulled out a nice sheet of parchment before recording:

She gave him a little smile before going back over to the book and holding it in place for Jack, so that it wouldn't move when he was trying to draw the circle.

"Umm, just on parchment, I guess," Jack replied as Reese pulled out a piece of parchment. Jack scribbled notes on his own as well. "Don't forget to write down the brightness too!" he reminded her with a smile as he took his notes.
He took his quill and started to trace the circle. He had had lots of practice drawing circles, due to all the doodles of planets he had drawn all over his notes in the past. He traced the light circle and labeled it "0 degrees" on the paper before grabbing the protrator.
"Ok, you can measure and I'll trace it again," he suggested as he put the finishing touches on his circle.

Reese observed the brightness of the light when Jack reminded her that they had to record that as well. What was she suppose to write? That is was bright? That is was really bright? Hmmm. After staring at the circle of light on the grid paper for a bit, she picked her pen up and scribbled something down on her parchment and when she reread what she wrote, she scribbled it out. That made no sense! She looked back up at the grid paper for another few seconds before writing another thing on her paper and what she wrote stayed this time.
She kept a good grip on the book as her boyfriend traced the circle the flashlight was making. "That's a perfect circle," she said as she examined the grid paper. Once he wrote the degrees down, she slowly moved her hands away from the book to let it balance once more before turning to Jack. "Measure it. Gotcha," she responded as she took the protractor from him.
She looked over the instructions to see how far she had to measure the paper, and then she examined the protractor to find the '10 degree' marking. After finding it, she placed it next to the book and tilted it back 10 degrees and that's where she held it at. "Okay, you can trace the circle now," she told Jack with a smile.
