Maidee was still irritated by the immaturity of the Slytherin class. Taking a few deep breaths, she cleared her mind and opened her lesson door for the older students. The ones that would REALLY be challenged today.
She set the supplies on the tables and took a seat in her chair, going over the lab she had set up for today.
Jake made a face as he entered Astronomy. He liked the subject, sure... but it just got really complicated in his brain, and involved too much reading and writing.
Still... maybe today would be good. Maybe he'd manage the lesson, and then the homework later on.
Maybe today would be a good day.
Smiling, Jake took a seat in the class. "Huhh-hi, Ppprofessor," he greeted, giving a small wave.

Last Astronomy lesson had confused the hell out of Oliver. He wanted to join the Dunces Class but he didn't want to look like a dunce in doing so. So here was again... to struggle through this and pretend he actually knew something about the universe... guh.
He entered the class and greeted the professor with a smile despite his worries over the class. “Hello, Miss.” he said politely and went to sit near Weird Kid, giving him a nod in acknowledgement.
Miranda grunted loudly as she finally reached the Astronomy tower, feeling like she had run half a mile, and a half (hehe), and slowly made her way to flop down on a chair. Oh yes, the Professor!"Good day-"Wheeeze"Professor. Hope you are well today!" Yes. Gasp. Darn stairs. They should build elevators. ELEVATORS!
She proceeded to take out her regular batted notebook and penzil to start scribbling at whatever information would be shared today.
Lina happily made her way into the astronomy tower, anxious to get started. However, something else was on her mind, and she scanned the classroom, looking for anything blue and possibly moving. Mousy mousy... she thought out to it, as though it might hear her and come running.
Chris was sleepy. He had stayed up late last night in the Common Room studying some of the Arithmancy from the last lesson. He had then been in the Library working on some Ancient Runes when he remembered the Advanced Astronomy Class was about to start. He had ran all the way up to this tower and then with one huge sigh he walked into the classroom.
It was not very full at all. He walked into the classroom and saw Miranda, the Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain, and decided to sit with her. "Hello Professor, how are you doing today?" he asked as he passed the slightly annoyed looking Professor.
Bag over his shoulder, kneazle ears perked to hear any slight mouse-like sound, Raiden made his way to the Astronomy Tower.
"Hello Professor McFarlane," Raiden said with a smile as he entered the classroom. His eyes automatically swept across the floor, straining to see if anything moved in any shadow under a spare piece of furniture. If Lina had been right about Professor Kazimeriz's words being a hint of sorts, then... maybe... the blue mouse was somewhere up here.
Speaking of... Raiden's eyes turned to the girl and with a slight smile he moved towards her.
Lina knelt down a little, looking along the floor, then stood to find a seat. She turned to find Raiden coming over to her and she smiled brightly. She glanced over at the irritated-looking professor, then sheepishly waved to Raiden and took a seat, pulling out a chair next to her for him. "Hey, Raiden," she said quietly.

"'lo," Raiden replied in greeting, dropping into the chair she'd pulled out and stuffing his bag under it. Leaning against the back, he looked around a bit more, ears twitching as they worked to catch even the slightest sound that could indicate the mouse was about.
He was silent for a moment, eyes flicking this way and that (if it liked high places, maybe it had managed to find its way onto a shelf or something?) before he sighed.
"It's not here. Least I can't hear it... footsteps might be scaring it, if it is."
"Darn," she said with a little frown. "Where else would you learn focus?" She paused, then smacked her forehead. "Duh... Divination! It's in a tower, and in divination you have to learn to calm your mind and body and focus, right? I didn't see it in there before, but I wasn't really looking."
Daniel entered the room and smiled on the direction of the Professor. He then approached the table near the professor and said, "Great Day, Professor. How have you been?" he said with an infectious smile on his face.
ooc: let me start off by saying that I've added an extra day on to this lab simply because I was unable to post the start of it last night. I am having computer issues with my laptop and now am sharing my dad's desktop with him and Mom....and getting on 3 days a week while at work. So if I'm a little slow to respond, please bear with me. I am not ignoring you, I am, however, about ready to throw the laptop out the window.

Maidee smiled as her precious older students came into the class room. Maybe, just maybe, the Slytherins weren't all babies in need of coddling, and it was just the newbies. Yes. That must be it. And she still had all that left over candy, perhaps she'll let this class eat it while they work. Yes. They'd enjoy a little treat, Maidee thought.
"Welcome to our first lab lesson, ladies and gentlemen," she wouldn't demeen this group by calling them 'boys and girls' - unless, of course, their maturity level reflected that of her last group. "It isn't going to be very easy, but it's more hands-on and that is usually a bit more enjoyable, wot?"
She passed around the sheet of paper explaining this day's lab. (located here. )
"Okay then, I'll read the introduction and we'll get started,:
SPOILER!!: I've copied it from the webpage, so you don't HAVE to read this if you don't like.
Where most people live on Earth, summers are hot and filled with many hours of strong sunlight, while winters are cold due to shortened hours of daylight and weak sunlight. You might think that the extreme heat of summer and the icy cold of winter have something to do with how close Earth is to the Sun, but actually, Earth's orbit is almost circular around the Sun, so there is very little difference in the distance from Earth to the Sun throughout the year. So, what are the reasons for the seasons, if it's not the distance from the Sun? One big part of the answer is that Earth is tilted on an axis.
What is an axis? Picture an imaginary stick going through the north and south poles of Earth. Earth rotates about this axis every 24 hours. However, this axis isn't straight up and down as Earth goes through its orbit about the Sun. Instead, it is tilted approximately 23 degrees. The degree of tilt varies by about 1.5 degrees every 41,000 years, which you can read more about in the Bibliography, below. We can thank our relatively big Moon for keeping this degree of tilt so stable. Without the influence of our Moon's gravity, the tilt would vary dramatically, like that of a wobbling top, resulting in rapidly changing seasons that would make it difficult for life to exist on Earth. Planetary scientists think that our relatively big Moon, and the axis tilt itself, were created by enormous collisions Earth experienced early in its formation 4.5 billion years ago.
How does the tilt of the axis create seasons? The tilt changes how the sunlight hits Earth at a given location. As shown in Figure 1, Earth's axis (the red line) remains fixed in space. It always points in the same direction, as Earth goes through its orbit around the Sun.
When it is summer in North America, the top part of the axis (the north pole) points in the direction of the Sun, and the Sun's rays shine directly on North America; while in South America, the axis is tipped away from the Sun and the Sun's rays hit Earth on a slant. So, when it is summer in North America, it is winter in South America. When it is winter in North America, the north pole is tipped away from the Sun, and the Sun's rays hit the Earth on a slant there; meaning it is summer in South America, because the Sun's rays hit Earth more directly in that hemisphere. As for the intermediate seasons, spring and fall, these are seasons when neither the top, nor the bottom, of Earth's axis are pointed in the direction of the Sun, days and nights are of equal length, and both the top half and the bottom half of Earth get equal amounts of light.
Slanted rays are weaker rays because they cover a larger area and heat the air and surface less than direct rays do. You can see this if you shine a flashlight on a large ball. If you point the flashlight directly at the ball, it makes a bright, circular spot on the ball; however, if your point the flashlight at the edge of the ball, the light makes a duller, more oval-looking spot on the ball. The same thing happens with Earth and the Sun—imagine the ball is Earth and the flashlight is the Sun. In this astronomy science fair project, you'll investigate how tilting a surface affects how light rays hit that surface.
If, for some reason, you do not have a ruler, protractor, or graph paper, I've got extras. And don't worry about the muggle 'flashlight' simply use 'lumos' with your wands. If, however, you want to have the muggle experience, I do have a few flashlights as well.
When you have read over the lab at least twice, you may begin."

Lina scanned it all over, then read it again to be sure. It said to have a helper... She looked up at the teacher and raised her hand. "As it says that we should have a helper, should we be doing this in teams, or will we just be relying on precision with wand work?"

Maidee considered this. She hadn't thought of using the wand work for precision before. Interesting. Yes, these Slytherins were much smarter than their Beginner's Class counter-parts.
"Go ahead and use two-person teams, I'm sure I can trust you all to work and not sit around chatting all day. If, however, there's a problem with too much chatter, we'll have to use the magic as a checker." This also enabled them to only turn in half as many labs, leaving a lot more room in Maidee's office for grading and whatnot.

"We can check after class," Raiden murmured, eyes scanning the handout quickly. They were working in pairs, then? "Wanna work with me? I'm a bit... well. I'm not a bit rubbish with this class, I'm plain not good at it."
He triiiiiiied though. Mmhmm. Retrieving his bag, he fished through the contents for the things they'd need.

Twitch.
Oh man. This looked HARD. DIFFICULT. Like a pain in the- they had to use the rulers and stuff? Thank Merlin she was half Muggle, or Miranda would've probably have had to break the ruler in two to get help...or something.
Hm, and they had to work in teams? Urgh. Miranda hated this. Not because it wasn't fun to work in pairs, but because she was always left when the others had found a partner. No, no, it would just be good ol' lone working Badger for her.
Yes, yes.
Allrighty. But before she started, Miranda read through the lab and the instructions two times more, just to get a clue of WHAT THE FLAPPERS SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO.
"I was just going to ask," she giggled. She started pulling things out of her bag. "I'm not horribly good at Astronomy, but I'm not too bad either. It has a certain element of precision, which is what I actually excel at. I'm good with theories and precision... That's why I'm good at potions and charms."
She looked through her sheets of graph paper to see how many were left then pulled out her ruler. "Why don't you set up the block, and find a paper tube or make one to put on top if it?"
Two-person teams? Gold frowned. Teamwork, 'tis good but, right now, the only person she really knew was Raiden, and he was working with Lina -- the name was Lina, wasn't it?
Oh, well. At least the project work was, in itself, not too hard. Gold was pretty sure she could do it, quite fine. But she did have to search for a partner. Mostly for that last bit of instructions. Though she could always use a wand, if she was unable to find one.
A partner, not the last bit.
The fifth year scanned the classroom with bright, green eyes, and saw a few people who had not yet paired up. She should ask one of them if they would like to pair up with her, yes.
Maidee looked around and saw a few, though not many, opting out of the partner scheme. "Come on, people, grab a partner and get to work! We don't want to rush and not have a very good lab, now, do we?"
ooc: okay, I know that not everyone can be on at the same time, if you really want, make up a partner. Don't RP a second person, mind, but simply RP that you have one. ie: "Maidee looked over and grabbed a girl not too far away from herself as her partner. They looked over the lab and began...." No chatting with your imaginary partner, as that would be RPing a second person, which we're not supposed to do.
OOC2: I only added ONE (1) extra day to this lesson, boys and girls. It'll be closed on Monday, whether ya'll post or not.

Okay, Torin wasn't great at Astronomy and he wasn't really sure that he wanted to partner up with anyone seeing as he didn't know too many people there.
But he did know Gold.
He walked up to his fellow Prefect. "Work with me?"

ANDDDDDD!
Her search had ENDED!
Gold was so glad to see a totally familiar person, she could have thrown her arms around Mr. T and HUGGED him. Or something hyper of that sort, yes. "Of course," she said, moving a bit, so that he could set up his own stuff, next to hers.
Nowww to get down to work!
"Do you want to prepare the light source?" she asked Torin. "I mean, I know we could just use Lumos, but I would love the muggle experience." Not to mention, flashlights reminded her of camp. Camp, muggle style, that is. Which was a wonderful thought.

Lots of memories, there!
He smiled as he took a seat beside Gold. Yes, this was not awkward at all. He and her were still great friends and he loved his Miss G.
"I can do that. But I don't really get anything else." He was amazed that he even managed to pass his OWLs in this subject.
He turned on the flashlight and started shining it around the class because he was bored.

Aww. Gold had to grin, at what Mr. T said. "'Tis fine," she said, with a little nod. "I can help you out." Her love for this class probably had to do with her love for stars, but what did it matter? The fact was that she was good at Astronomy, always had been.
She couldn't say that about a lot of other subjects, though.
She chuckled as he began to shine the flashlight around, then shook her head. Silly Mr. T! He could be adorable, sometimes. BUT! No time to think of guys and how they could be all cute at times, right now and ... and why was she thinking all this in the first place? She had work to do here, honestly!
The fifth year shook her head, then picked up the block of wood, and placed it on the table. "Place the flashlight on top of this, Mr. T," she said, pushing back the red hair that chose this precise moment to fall into her eyes, and wondering why she kept thinking of Dylan. Maybe Mr. T was thinking of Brody, too? Did guys randomly think of their girlfriends?
Young love, hehe!
"You are supposed to..." she glanced at the instructions. "Line up the edge of the flashlight so that it's close to the edge of the block." She would tape the flashlight, when Mr. T had done that.

So far, so good!
Well, at least someone here was good at this class. "Where were you last Term when I needed to study for my OWLs?" He shook his head and wondered if she would help him with his NEWTs next Term.
But moving on.
He took the flashlight and set it on the block of wood, trying to make sure that the edge of the flashlight was near the edge of the block. "That good?"

The honest answer would be a beautiful city known as Paris, a city that she still missed, and would love to visit, again. But Gold did not give that response. She merely smiled up at Torin.
"I could help you with your Astronomy NEWT," she told him, as she watched him place the flashlight on the block.
"Yep!" Gold nodded, in response to his question and, reaching for the masking tape, began to work on the flashlight. She taped it down, to ensure that it could not roll around, and then straightened up again. They had to prepare the surface now, did they not?
Ah yes, they did have to do that.
"Tape a sheet of graph paper to a firm surface..." Gold glanced around. "Firm surface? I don't have a large book, there must be a cutting board around here, somewhere." She frowned, but the frown quickly faded away, as she noticed that there was a cutting board, on their table. "Here," she handed it to Mr. T. "Would you like to tape the graph paper to it? Should be stiff enough to tilt. The paper, I mean."
... and now where was that Scotch tape? They needed it, for this step. Gold finally spotted it, passed it to Mr. T, and began to organize their table a little, while Mr. T worked on the graph paper.
