The Pracitce Pitch - Flying Lessons There's a large grassy area outside of the Quidditch Stadium that's void of any obstacles whatsoever. At the center of the vast expanse of grass are two rows of school brooms lined up neatly. But standing guard over the brooms is Professor Vindictus who has positioned himself so that no one can even get near or touch a broom without his permission. If you're here for your first-ever flying lesson or are a non-Quidditch player who never mastered flying for whatever reason and feel the need for a refresher basic course, then have a seat on the grass in front of the professor. |
Flying Lesson #1 When: 2 OCT 9pm EST - 4 OCT 9pm EST Who Can Attend: First Years and those who are petrified of flying more than 4 inches above the ground (Quidditch captains and those who have played on their House teams are not allowed to attend). Lesson 1 Rules & Guidelines 1. Sit on the grass 2. Keep chatting BEFORE the professor starts teaching to a minimum, and you shouldn't be socializing while the professor is talking. 3. Do not announce that you're late (just pretend you've been there the entire time). 5 points will be taken if you say you're late. 4. Do not leave without permission (I'll dismiss the class so that you can RP leaving, but if you walk out then you'll lose 5 points and possibly get detention, too). 5. Points will be rewarded for answering questions - remember to raise your hand before speaking! 6. Points will be rewarded for RPing the practical (flying) portion of the lesson. To get points, you MUST have at least 10 quality posts in which you're attempting to do what the professor asks (it's okay to be rubbish at flying - not everyone is perfect. I want you to have FUN). 7. This lesson is for First Years and older students who have never played Quidditch/have a fear of flying/just can't seem to remain on a broom while in the air. |
Bella then found the practice field. She thought it would be great to learn how to fly on a broom, it was a very useful thing to know for protection, and fun. Bella was suprized how no one was there, but she arrived probably early because her feet were moving fast, exited, since her regular concentration was reading her book wile her legs would guide her. Well she saw the coach, all the brooms, and took a seat and waited for the other students and the class to begin with her book. "Hello," Bella said to the professor. "My name is Bella Lovegood," she said puting her hand out. |
Tibi shuffled down to the practice pitch, absolutely terrified of having to fly. He had the picture of he and his dad on that broom, but even knowing he'd been up that high wasn't helpful. "Hi Professor," Tibi said nervously, as he settled down onto the gras. Picking at the blades of grass, Tibi watched the clouds overhead. |
Rafe thought this lesson would be more fun to watch more than anything. He thought himself a very skilled flyer for a first year, but at the same time a little extra practice wouldn't hurt. "Good day Professor Vidictus," Rafe said as he passed the professor, "Good to see you again!" Rafe forced a smile, he tried not to think too much on their first encounter. He took a seat on the grass like the other first years. He hoped more Gryffindors would show. |
Damon walked over to the pitch grass ready to start his first lesson on flying. This was one of his more bigger expectations as a thing to do at Hogwarts. Hoping he could and would do well he sat down to await instruction. |
LouAnn Purple wasn't necessarily what one would all the very worst flyer ever, but she was surely not the best either. She'd actually been fairly good once upon a time---long before the moving from country to country and school to school started. She'd even played Quidditch once upon a time, too---long, long ago before her life got too complicated for her to even focus on flying, much less practice it enough to get better and more experienced. She'd been home-schooled for the past few years, and in that period of time she hadn't flown at all. Her mum and dad had side-along apparated her, and she'd gotten a little on the rusty side when it came to taking off into the skies. So it was for those reasons she chose to attend a flying class he imagined would be running over in first years. Ahhh, well. There are worst things that could happen, she supposed. Approaching the area where the lesson was to be held, LouAnn took a seat on the grass and waited for things to get started. |
K walked onto the pitch so she could start flying lessons. She was so excited this is what she has been waiting for since she started Hogwarts she is a natural at flying, she has been flying her whole life practially. "I cannot wait Good day Professor!" K said with such excitment. K also saw her friends and said "Hi I'm so excited I cannot wait!" okay she was overly hyper now so she sat down before things got out of hand. |
Carter walked on to the pitch excited to start his first flying lesson. He walked in and sat on the grass. He then looked up to th sky. The weather was perfect. This was going to be a great day. |

Plymouth Morgan strolled happily down to the Pitch. He wasn't sure that he TOTALLY belonged in beginning flying anymore - he HAD saved Evolette McKenna, HEAD GIRL, by flying her out of flooded grindylow infested waters last term. But, he liked Professor V a whole lot and was in fact scared to fly over 4 inches from the ground. Despite his head ALWAYS being in the clouds, Plymouth liked his feet on the ground. "Professor V." Plymouth nodded in his manly, Mr. Hogwarts way,the went to stand beside Professor V. He mimed his stance (mimed it quite well, actually). |
Fred entered the pitch for the 1st flying lesson of the semester absolutely mortified to have to do the basics all over again at 15. But thats what happens when you go to school like FDurmstrang where they kick you out of class for not catching on fast enough. He remembered them saying something along the lines as flying is a privilege only for those who prove they belong on first go so we can weed out the rejects. Just one of so many things he hated at Durmstrang. Atleast now he was gonna get his chance to learn to fly he thought to himself and even through the embarassment it would be worth it, right? |
Vindictus nodded at each of the students as they arrived. "Hello, there and have a seat!" he greeted each of them and kept his arms folded. "For all of you First Years, welcome to your first flying lesson!" Then he glanced to his side and grinned. "And to the older students, I'm thrilled that you're here!" |

Evelyn sat down just as the professor started to speak, thanking whoever would listen that she wasn't late. 'You don't need flying lessons Ev.' the voice said in her mind. 'Duh, but this is probably the last time I'll be able to fly until next year so shush.' she replied, frowning as she looked towards the sky. She smiled at the professor when he welcomed everyone, but to say she was thrilled? Not really the word she was looking for. |
Yay! Flying lessons! Jule skipped over to the pitch and flomped onto the ground. Flying was always fun when you had professor Vindictus as the instructor. Strict, but he still had his moments. "Hey, Professor," she said and she lifted herself to her elbows. |
"Before we actually fly today, we need to discuss a serious issue - flying while distracted," Vindictus said somberly and pulled out a poster for everyone to look at. Quote:

Keeley walked nervously onto the pitch, scared to death. She was about the clutziest person on the planet, and knew that injuries would occur, and she would probably get laughed at. But, she had promised Bella that she would come. So, she plopped down on the ground, growing out her highlighter yellow hair to her waist, and her eyes a more violent shade of violet with nerves. To the teacher, she responded with an awkward, "Because they can hit things- like trees?" |

Tibi looked at the poster, eyes wide. Raising his hand, he offered an answer, timidly. "Because, professor, if you're not paying attention to where you're flying, you could hit something... just like you could if you didn't watch where you were walking." He paused. "Only... flying you're going faster and could fall, too." Yeah, exactly why Tibi DIDN'T want to fly. |
Rafe raised his hand immediately. "It can cause serious injury, to not only yourself, but to the people around you," Rafe answered from personal experience. During tryouts he lost focus a couple of times and ran into other participants. It wasn't very pretty. |
Raising her hand, LouAnn said, "...because, well, that can happen." She pointed at the poster and laughed just a little. She couldn't help it, as that poster was...well, just too funny. "Anyway, if we become distracted while flying, we can travel in the wrong direction or travel into buildings, landmarks, or other flyers. A very important thing to remember is that if we become distracted, we may accidentally let ourselves be seen by muggles." |
Fred heard the question and raised his hand and gave it his best and said, "Distractions can be hazerdous to flying cause distractions cause someone not to be able to concentrate on what they are doing so in cases of flying sure they could fly into something but since flying a broom takes concentration they could lose control over the broom and being high in the air that could have herendous results.". |
Evelyn looked up at the professor as he asked a question. Raising an eyebrow, she raised her hand. "Because you can get seriously hurt if not paying attention to where you are going." she said softly, putting her hand back down and looking towards the sky again. "Or probably fly into a huge muggle town revealing us all." |
