Default Potions Laboratory

A disused room next to the potions classroom has been converted into a potions laboratory. There are several large workstations available, complete with stands and burners for standard size 2 cauldrons and plenty of room to work.

Along the walls at the sides of the room are additional stations holding alembics, distillation trains, calcination equipment, Florence flasks, a large jar of clean glass stirring rods, funnels, empty jars and more -- in short, all the equipment a potioneer would need to do his or her work.

Along the back wall of the class are jars and bottles containing a host of standard potions ingredients. Each container is marked clearly with a parchment label bearing the details of its contents (including the date of expiration), written in Professor Kazimeriz's shaky but legible hand. Several of the larger jars house foul-looking ingredients: there is one jar that appears to be filled with pickled toads, another houses what appear to be large eyeballs from some creature in pale blue syrup, and still others seem to contain the visceral organs of animals - rat spleens, newt tails (which are still wriggling in the jar), and whole flobberworms. One jar of some sort of greenish sap is bubbling lazily, and another opaque bottle keeps trembling, clinking against the others.

There is also a large cabinet that has been triple-locked and charmed. Through the unbreakable glass front of the cabinet, you can see vials, jars, bottles of various size, shape and contents. These are the Professor's private stores. You must receive assistance from the professor to access these ingredients, as all the poisons, rare items like unicorn parts and truly dangerous ingredients in the lab -- including dangerous potions such as veritaserum and amortentia-- are housed in this cabinet.

There is a large chalkboard at the front of the classroom near the Professor's sturdy mahogany desk. On it reads this note:

Welcome to the open studio potions lab. This is a supervised independent studies lab, where you may work on personal projects as well as practice potions for your class assessments, OWLS and NEWTS. Please obey the following rules while in this lab:
  • SAFETY FIRST. Practice common sense and good safety practices at all times while in this lab. Remember that other potions are being brewed around you and exercise caution at all times.
  • WHEN IN DOUBT, AS: If you have any question in your mind about the safety or sanity of what you are planning, please bring your intended potion plan to the professor for assstance. The professor reserves the right to end any experiment at his discretion, especially if it is unsafe or irresponsible.
  • CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. The house elves are not your personal slaves, and it is neither their responsibility nor mine to clean up after you. If you fail to clean up your workstation on departure, you will receive a most unpleasant detention.
  • HAVE A PLAN and WORK AT YOUR OWN LEVEL. Creativity is definitely encouraged in this lab, but please do not just slap ingredients together without knowing the magical theory behind what you are doing. I expect all students to work at their level and if you have questions, please ask the professor. I am always present when this lab is open.
  • WASTE NOT, WANT NOT. Many of the ingredients in this lab are quite costly. Use them with discretion.
  • DANGEROUS INGREDIENTS: Many of the more dangerous or expensive ingredients in the lab are in the professor's private stores. On approval, the professor will obtain any of the necessary dangerous ingredients from the storage cabinet for your use.
  • COMPOUND POTIONS: Only NEWT levels students with prior approval from the professor may work on compound potions in this lab, to ensure that you properly understand the magical theory behind them. If you are unsure if you are attempting a compound potion, please ask. Those who are found to be in violation of this or any rule will be subject to disciplinary action.
ooc notes: Come on in and get creative! This is an independent lab, NOT potions class... this is the place to let your character practice potions, do labwork, and experiment. For the purposes of the RP please presume that Professor Kazimeriz is in the room at all times unless I specify otherwise. Obviously, I am not really here at all times, but I will be monitoring this thread closely throughout the term and will do my best to respond to posts directed toward Professor Kazimeriz quickly and efficiently.

Please RP responsibly! I'm cool OOC with potions-gone-wrong-RPs (accidentally blowing up cauldrons and such-- stuff happens in a lab!) but just make sure that you are ready to face the consequences IC for any actions you take or mistakes your charrie makes. For instance, if you have a vat of lethal poison explode all over you, it is quite possible your character WILL die, and if you are irresponsible IC, expect Kazimeriz to react accordingly. Please exercise good sense and remember to follow the site rules at all times.

Also, if your character is addressing the professor or needs attention, please put PROFESSOR KAZIMERIZ in your subject line for your post, just so I don't accidentally miss it.

If you have any questions, please PM me at XanaSnape. Oh... and most important: HAVE FUN! ~Xana~

Flipping through his potions book, JD looks at the different potions curiously. Boil cure potion...love potion...hair raising potion... amazed at his findings, he keeps flipping through trying to find one that might be good for him to start out with.

Burn healing paste... remembering that aweful burn he got when he tried to use the lumos spell, he figures maybe he should have some of that on hand...

Opening his book fully to that page, he starts collecting his ingredients.

SPOILER!!: Burn-Healing Paste
Quote:
Burn-Healing Paste

Ingredients:
* corn oil (200mL)
* mallow leaves and stems (10)
* aloe (20 drops)
* chickweed (1 handful)
* slug juice (2 slugs)

Instructions:

* Place mallow (whole) into corn oil and allow to steep for 30 minutes

* Prepare aloe by squeezing juice, counting each drop until you have 20

* Squeeze two slugs into the aloe then, add chickweed

* Place the aloe/slug/chickweed mixture into the mallow and corn oil

* Bring mixture to a boil while continuously stirring counterclockwise

* Boil for 20 minutes without stirring

* Take off of fire and stir 20 times, counterclockwise

Potion should be a thick, orange, paste.

Placing his cauldron on the fire he had learned to make, when Anya taught him, he pours in 200 ml of corn oil into his cauldron and adds the mallow stems and leaves.

Turning on the timer for 30 minutes, he starts getting the 20 drops of aloe into a small dish. After that's ready he stands back to watch the others at work.

Thomas took the flask full of squished sopophrous beans. "Rachel who much should I spill in to the potion?" he asked her curiously. He watched her stir the potion and turned his head to what she wrote and Wow, he had never seen such tidy handwriting. He turned his head to the old book and began reading the instructions of how to create the potion. By the first five lines of the instructions Thomas already began to worry. Were all potions so exact are was this one just unique?

"Turn- Thomas, I measured the exact amount that is needed - all you have to do is just pop it in. That was the point of what we just did with all the ingredients," Rachel said, pointing to all the flasks and bowls. Why else did he think she would do this? Because it was fun?

Yep, he was definitely not your average little boy. Or maybe he was? What did little boys act like these days anyway? . . .

Next - Stir 4 times clockwise and twelve times anticlockwise for 10 minutes until the potion turns a deep shade of green... Ok, now he just needs to pour it in. "Stir it like the book says while I make sure that all the ingredients are ready for the next part since it has to be quick," she said and handed him the stirring rod, hoping he wouldn't mess up.

But how hard was it? He needed to pour the juice in and then stir. It wasn't exactly Advanced Arithmancy...

Thomas poured out all the liquid from the flask to the potion. He took quickly the wooden spoon and began steering the potion like it was written in the book, 'Stir 4 times clockwise and twelve times anticlockwise for 10 minutes until the potion turns a deep shade of green...' he began steering the potion and he had to do the same sequence for exactly twenty minutes. "She might be the Ravenclaw prefect but she is pushy," He thought. He carried on doing the same sequence for ten minutes waiting fir the potion to turn into deep shade green. What a revolting coulor.

Rachel had to work REALLY hard on preventing herself from remarking on his mistakes... Yet, to her relief (well, kind of), he was actually pretty good. And he even noticed the 'x2' in the book, which was fantastic since she herself had missed it.

"Good job, Thomas," the sixth year said with a smile - yes, it was REAL - "but if you let me do the next bit, that would be great," she stated simply and took the rod from his arms, the erumpent horns and Valerian leaves already at the ready.

Tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, Rachel quickly took the leaves and dumped them into the cauldron, watching as they sank below the surface of the murky liquid. How THIS was going to end up purple in the end, she had no idea.

Stir 6 times clockwise, then for each of the next 10 anticlockwise stirs, add a bit of the erumpent horns. Try to make sure that the pieces are more or less the same.

Scary.
Rachel took a deep breath - AWAY from the cauldron - and began stirring. 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... NOW! Moving quickly, she added the first bit of the horns, then stirred once anti clockwise; then another one, and another stir - and so on until all ten stirs were done.

"Phew - here, stir slowly clockwise until the potion turns from this colour to a dark blue-y indigo colour... Like this one," she said as she handed over the rod, pointing towards the book were the colour was plain to see.

Heaving a sigh, she leaned on the wall next to their table and re-arranged her hair thoughts. Thomas wasn't THAT bad... And she was REALLY tired. Good thing they'd almost finished - all that remained was the deadly hellebore.

Thomas looked over at the book trying to remember the coulor exactly. He began stirring the slimy icky potion. Another question popped up in Thomas' mind, "Are all potions these terrible to brew or is this one different from the other ones?" He stirred the rod about like a million times and the stupid potion wouldn't change coulor, Ugh... This potion is irritating.

After a while the potion finally began changing coulor. It turned into light purple and then into indigo, the coulor was almost like the coulor in the book. As it turned blue-y indigo he said, "Rachel I finished," and the potion turned in to the coulor in the book. Hopefully they had finished this terrible potion.

It's a good thing Rachel was tired since she would have probably gone berserk over the fact that Turner was stirring the potion all wrong. Be as it were, she WAS brewing a dreamless-sleep potion and therefore was allowed to be a little unobservant.

She chuckled at his question and flicked her hair out of her eyes before answering. "Well, I won't lie to you - this potion isn't the hardest out there, Thomas. It might definitely not be the easiest, but there are harder ones," she replied, thinking of the instructions she had read on how to brew Felix Felicis or, Merlin forbid, the Polyjuice Potion.

Now THAT was something she really didn't want to brew. Ever.

"Pretty good... And it's the exact colour," she noted as she noticed the potion's colour match the one in the book and instantly shoved her gloves on - hellebore next. Now, while she wasn't sure if anything bad happened to a person who TOUCHES the poison, but she wasn't taking any chances.

"Now for the final part..." she trailed off and poured, carefully, all the hellebore she had measured before, making sure every last drop of it went in. She wasn't messing around when it came to poison in something she was going to drink. After placing the empty flask on the worktable, the sixth year took a hold of the rod and stirred the potion until it went lavender coloured - just like the book said.

At last... "Now all we have to do is to let it stew until it darkens and becomes purple... And when it comes, we have to turn off the fire immediately," she told Thomas, being extremely serious. She was going to drink this later - it had better be perfect. "Let me know when it's close - I'm going to start tidying up," Rachel added as she began piling up the dirty equipment.

See? See how nice she was? She was letting HIM rest while she cleaned up the mess. Ahh - she was an angel.

Ahh. The syrup of hellebore such a terrible potion ingredient. Seriously, why would anyone want to add it to there potion? Unless Rachel wants to kill herself know that would be awful, but look on the bright side at least there wouldn't be anymore second hand teachers anymore!!! Thomas looked at the potion turning darker and darker every second, this potion was interesting at first but know it is less interesting boring.

The potion started turning to light purple and he didn't quite remember what did Rachel say. He remembered the coulor purple mentioned but did she say dark purple or light purple. He had a feeling that it needs to be dark purple but he wasn't complete sure. He liked taking risks and if it supposed to be light purple then tough luck for him and Rachel. He waited for the liquid to turn dark purple. "Um... Rachel I hope you meant dark purple because that's the coulor the potion is," he said turning of the flame when the potion turned dark purple.

Another student exploded into the room, calling his name. He smirked a little. "A fashion emergency, is it? Well, while I am certain that Professor Bunbury could teach you a jewelry repair charm, I think a simple perma-mend potion would be a way to use potions education to solve your problem. You will find the instructions in the book Witchcraft your Crafts: 1,001 Potions for Handiwork. Third shelf on the left, with the rather obnoxiously pink binding." He gestured toward a bright pink book in the shelves at the back of the room. The binding was decorated with lace and little buttons and charms.

Nicoletta blushed a little then grimaced. She absolutely hated pink! Well as long as the bracelet was fixed. She looked at the thin silver chain and the green snake that dangled from the side, grouped with several precious stones. "Thanks proffesor." Nicoletta muttered. She walked over towards the cabinet and picked up the book. Ah! I hurt her eyes just to look at it! She held it as far away from her face as possible. She flipped the book open on a table. Much to her displeasure, the pages of the book were decorated with little hearts. She finally found the potion she was looking for. Nicoletta grabed a couldron, put on her gloves, and began to work.
Thepotion tured a sickening light pink color when it had almost finished. it was all she could do not to drop something revolting into it."Remind me not to ask proffesor k. about anything even slightly girly ever again" Nicoletta whispered to herself. when she had finally finished she put some of it on her bracelet. It stayed together. She cleaned up and stuck her gloves in her back pocket.
