And once again, you enter the dank, dark cave that is the Hogwarts potions classroom... but something has changed. Unlike the environment of the previous class, which was characterized by a clash of noxious odors, this time the classroom is filled with...

THE BEST. SMELLS. EVER.

Though the room is still cast in the typical gloom from the flickering candle wall sconces, unlike during the last class this time the air smells sweet, with notes of chocolate, vanilla, fresh coffee, light florals and fresh breezes, newly cut grass... A thousand lovely scents all harmoniously combining to create a symphony of sweet smells. Small flames are burning under a series of cauldrons simmering at the back of the room, and there are the typical rows of workstations with two stools at each station.

A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.

At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:

POTIONS CLASS: LOVE POTIONS

Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. I expect my younger students are now able to set up their workstations as well; if you need help, please ask an older student.

You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.

Class Synopsis:

The class began with a discussion on Love Potions- the theory behind them and their classification.

Then, the students discussed probable ingredients in love potions based on their knowledge of potion ingredients; this lead to the lab assignment, in which the students were to partner with a person of the opposite gender and brew a basic Class XX love potion.

The students received instruction on how to remove infused oils from their pre-treated lovage seeds, and were instructed to work in pairs to complete this task.

Next, the students were instructed to add a single drop of swan blood to the potion, bottled a draught, and sample each other's work. Ah... Love!

After Celandine quit stirring, Jake took up that job himself, his tongue sticking out of his mouth in concentration as he didn so. It wasn't until he'd gone clockwise and counter-clockwise a few times that he realised he didn't know when to stop.

"Oh crap," the boy muttered, trying to keep his hand at a steady pace. "How llllong ddd-do I d-d-do this fffer?" he asked, trying to read the instructions and failing in his slight panic.

Why did there have to be more girls than boys in this class?
Destiny scanned the room, and her eyes fell on Evelyn and Josh. Hmmmm. She could tell on them, buuut that would be wrong. Just wrong. Its not like they were a couple, were they? She gave them a quick glance that said 'I'm on to you two'.

Maybe she could work on the potion herself. Who needs boys? Psssh.
'Professor! Can I work by myself?' Please say yes, please say yes.

By the end of Tibi's speach, Wesley's face had gone from moderately calm to pure horror. She had thought these conditions where going to be about not touching anything and letting him do all the work. But they weren't. Any stuttering from before was completely gone, she spoke quickly, completely matching his serious tone

"My name is Wesley, and I don't want to fall in love with anyone either. And I don't like you like that, and I don't want you to ever like me like that because that is NASTY," she stressed the last word very clearly, "and I promice to never, ever talk about anything that happens - and I never, ever break a promice because that is very bad - and I WOULD NEVER KISS YOU BECAUSE KISSING IS THE MOST AWFUL. THING. EVER," her was voice reaching near hysteria. Wesley didn't hug people; why did this Tibi think she was going to kiss somebody?

Looking at his hand, Wesley paused, wondering if she should shake it. Avoiding any physical contact, no matter how simple, seemed like a good idea to her. But she reached out and shook it in her own, sweaty palm, because she figured that was the only way she could convince him of her sincerity. Someone once told her actions spoke louder than words, but Wesley was inclined to believe the person who created that line didn't know how to speak.

"Gosh darn it, I need a partner."

Well, Rafe was out of the question. And Torin was working with Reese. She didn't know who else to ask...so she looked around the room, hoping some guy would be nice enough to be partners with her.

Tiberius broke out into a wide grin as she spoke and then shook his hand. "I completely agree. I think we'll get along just fine." As he released her hand, he was aware of it being a little sweaty, but he had no idea if it was him or her. Or both.

Nodding his head over to his station, he turned to walk back to it. "We can work over here. No one sat with me, so there's room." Tibi pulled his bag off the other chair and settled back into it. Carefully considering the instructions, Tibi double checked all the ingredients in front of him.

"Are you any good at potions?" He whispered a little nervously. Now that all that icky 'I don't like you, you don't like me, good?' stuff was over, he was getting a little nervous about actually doing the work. He hadn't managed much of anything last lesson as he'd spent the majority of it crying.

But it couldn't be that hard, right?

"You could get the water ready, if you want? While I crush this stuff?"

How was he supposed to find a partner, anyway? No Lissy, no Shana, no Brody, and Reese had already partnered up. He frowned for a second, then saw Lucy, and broke into a grin. "Partners?" he asked her politely, if quickly, pretty sure that she had not yet found a guy to work with.

Ouch. Partners. Lyddia was never good with social things and she hadn't made many friends. She sat alone and cursed the teacher for setting this up. Why make her more concious of the fact that she didn't have any friends? Especially guy friends. And she could only assume they'd be testing the potions on each other, which Lyddia didn't exactly appreciate either. She was beginning to dislike this teacher. Why do this to the students? Yes, the students, consider the students.

This was not going to go well.

Running back to her station, Wesley grabbed her bag and equipment. She returned to Tibi's work space, placing her things on the floor, and hopped into the seat across from her partner. Listening as he spoke, the small child felt her stomach begin to clench up again, "N-not r-really," she stuttered. Uh-oh. Maybe I shouldn't have said that...What if he doesn't want to be my partner anymore? Wesley didn't want to have to go through finding somebody to work with again, she was still exhausted from this experience. Thinking quickly, she added, "B-but I know how to c-clean cauldrons!" That had been the topic of her very first lesson; she still had the notes. "H-have you cleaned yours?" the Hufflepuff asked, then flinched. Of course he had! Tibi was smart! He was good at this kind of stuff.

"Okay!" she answered, eager to follow directions, and happy to move on. Creating water was something Wesley knew how to do. She stared at the directions and ingredients list, then asked, "W-wait. How much is a ounce?" She didn't know how to measure these kinds of things; usually she just said Aguamenti and watched it all come flooding out.

"Fyo, right? So, let's start!" Lucy said eagerly as she started heating up the cauldron. Looking back at the instructions, she saw that the two steps were to heat 4 ounzes of water and crush up 2 bunches of fluxweed.

"How about I start on the water and you can crush the fluxweed?" She said to Fyo politely.

Reading over the instructions again, and then looking to the cauldron, Tibi considered her question. "Well, we're using purified water, sooo..." He scrutinized the ingredients that were laid out. "No wands for that." He picked up the container with the purified water and passed it the Wesley.

"Four ounces," he said, smiling at her and leaving her to get it warm, but not quite boiling. Turning to the mortar and pestal, he plunked two bunches of fluxweed down and got to crushing. Small beads of sweat popped out on his brow, partly from nerves partly from physical exertion, as he twisted and crushed.

Chewing on the inside of his cheek, Tibi continued to crush. "How's the water," he asked, not looking up.

Putting down the mortar and pestal, Tibi looked down into it, satisfied that the fluxweed was "finely crushed."

Kylie looked around.. finding a partner wasn't the EASIEST thing when he preferred the couples to be boy/girl. She saw Carter, he still appeared to be partner-less. "Carter? Wanna.. be partners?" She didn't know Carter all that well, but she'd talked to him a couple of times--at least they knew each others names.

She smiled at him and said, "Yes, that's right. I think it's almost there." She watched the contents for a minute and then looked up at him.

Not necessarily forged outside of it, though.

"Ready to add the pollen?" he asked with a smile, when she told him the water was near a boil. "You take care of the next few steps" - the change of colour, the directional stirs - "and I will get down to work on the bloodroots, if that's okay with you."

"Add it slowly," Copernicus offered to let her do it, although he was capable. Might as well help out a friend since Potions really wasn't one of those subjects he struggled with. It was just logic with a bit of intuition. "That way we can watch for the color change. If more of the water has boiled off, then the amount of pollen could change slightly."

He knew he was being bossy and hoped she didn't mind. "And I'll stir," he brandished the stirstick.

"Oh," Wesley said, surprised by Tibi's confession. Eyeing him carefully, she decided he was just being modest. Because Ravenclaws where smart. "Mmmhmm," she nodded, agreeing. With him to guide her, the 12-year-old was 100% positive it would be okay.

Wesley let out a nervous giggle, reaching for the container with both hands so she wouldn't spill it. "Right. Sorry." Good thing the Ravenclaw knew what he was doing, "See- you're good at this."

Biting her lip, she carefully poured the liquid into the cauldron and waited for it to heat up. Keeping her dark brown eyes focused on the potion, the Hufflepuff patted her wand comfortingly. Poor thing- it wasn't its fault it couldn't create pure water. She knew it tried its hardest.

Placing her hands back in her lap, Wesley focused on the water. Staring. Staring. Staring. Oh! She looked up as Tibi spoke, watching him crush the fluxweed. "Good?" the small girl said, phrasing her answer as a question. It had to be good, right? The water looked the same as it had earlier, nothing had changed except for her face which was beginning to sweat from all the heat.

"Yours looks good too," Wesley added honestly, looking at the crushed ingredients with awe. "Now...," she stared at the board, "we add them?"

Lucy listened to him carefully and just decided to agree with him because she clearly didn't know what she was talking about.

"Yes, I suppose..."

Looking back at the task at hand, Lucy nodded as he asked to work with the bloodroots.

"Yes, I think it's ready," She said as she added the pollen and started stirring so it would dissolve. Very very slowly, the liquid turned a light golden color. She smiled in a satifying manner and looked up at the board once more.

Had she agreed with him for... the sake of agreement? Fyo privately thought so, but he only offered her a small, polite smile as she turned her attention back to the potion. This was certainly one of his better subjects. Maybe it was one of her better ones, too?

He let her work with the lovage, and reached for the bloodroots, laying out three of them. These, he split as instructed by their Potions Master, taking his time to scrape out their inner membranes, the same way he had done the term before, for a rather different potion. "Done," he announced, in answer to her question. "Have you brought the potion back to a boil?"

Mmmm, this class smelled GOOOOD, today!

Slowly....slowly, LouAnn. "I think you'd be good at it. You seem to really know your stuff."

What color was she supposed to look for again? Yellow? Gold? Light gold, that was it! Cope was supposed to stir, thank Merlin. He'd probably be the first one to notice a shade of light gold anyway.
