And once again, you enter the dank, dark cave that is the Hogwarts potions classroom... but something has changed. Unlike the environment of the previous class, which was characterized by a clash of noxious odors, this time the classroom is filled with...
THE BEST. SMELLS. EVER.
Though the room is still cast in the typical gloom from the flickering candle wall sconces, unlike during the last class this time the air smells sweet, with notes of chocolate, vanilla, fresh coffee, light florals and fresh breezes, newly cut grass... A thousand lovely scents all harmoniously combining to create a symphony of sweet smells. Small flames are burning under a series of cauldrons simmering at the back of the room, and there are the typical rows of workstations with two stools at each station.
A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.
At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:
Quote:
POTIONS CLASS: LOVE POTIONS
Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. I expect my younger students are now able to set up their workstations as well; if you need help, please ask an older student.
You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.
--Professor Kazimeriz
Class Synopsis:
The class began with a discussion on Love Potions- the theory behind them and their classification.
Then, the students discussed probable ingredients in love potions based on their knowledge of potion ingredients; this lead to the lab assignment, in which the students were to partner with a person of the opposite gender and brew a basic Class XX love potion.
The students received instruction on how to remove infused oils from their pre-treated lovage seeds, and were instructed to work in pairs to complete this task.
Next, the students were instructed to add a single drop of swan blood to the potion, bottled a draught, and sample each other's work. Ah... Love!
Blink. It was decided. Professor Kaziman was a WEIRDO. And he was just... ahhh... creepy. Love triangles? Really? That just wasn't cool. Having someone fall in love with you with a love potion was already crazy enough. And to have a THIRD person part of the activity.... ? WAS HE INSANE? Yes. He was. He really was. And his smile was just really creepy. Love itself is a tricky business? Shudder.
Livvy made no comment as she crushed the fluxweed and finished off the job. She peeked over at Samson every now and then, with curiosity and to see if the boy was on track of things. There was nothing worse than having a partner that slacked off. BLECH. She hated that.
Meh? She glanced over at Samson when he spoke to her. Oh. So they were speaking? Livvy just smiled sheepishly and shrugged her shoulders. "I guess. Unless you want to talk about something? I just sort of want to get this all over with or so... but it IS rather dull. So. Uhm. What year are you in?" It was a LAME question, but Livvy couldn't think of anything better. Maybe it would lead off to some better ones.
"Oh. And are you done? Cuz' if you are, we can move onto the lovage seeds and extract the pollen. Apparently we have to do it together," she said, shrugging her shoulders.
The most work Samson was doing was staring at the bubbles forming in the cauldron as the water boiled. But then, his eyes lifted to the Professor at his instructions. EEEH. Could he skip potions? Like, leave? NOW?
Ugh.
He looked over at Livvy and mirrored her shrug. It was better to have a really stupid question that be silent and awkward and all. "7th year." he said simply. "I'm graduating this year. Finally! And you?" Yeah, that was a stupid question too, but oh well.
As soon as Livvy finished crushing the fluxweed, Samson gestured to the cauldron. Of course he was done. There wasn't much work needed in heating water, really. "I guess you should add that in now. And, er, we have to work on the lovage seeds? Eugh. That sounds haaard," he half whined, but it was needed. A good grade was needed. Rawr.
Samson took the liberty of gathering a handful of lovage seeds, and scattered them on the table. "Seed number one," he held up the small seed with his thumb and forefinger, between his eyes. "Ready?" He could tell she was just as reluctant about it as he was. Extracting the stupid pollen or oil or whatever was inside the stupid small seed that only came in one drop that evaporated almost instantly! What kind of insane ingredient was this anyway.
Kay sighed and turned. "Hey, does anyone what to work this thing out with me. I'm done with the First part of it." Kay said as loud as she could without yelling it.
Jack watched as their potion progress. It was doing JUST as it should...light pink...a bit dark...coming up to a nice shade of fushia.
Jack beamed at Isabella. 'Well done!' He really was pleased. If she had been a he, a high five would have been in order. He was beginning to think of her as a little sister and had an urge to give her a hug...but considering what was brewing, he thought that ill advised.
Warm water until just before boiling....check (Isabella)
Crush fluxweed with mortar and pestle, add to water. Allow to come to a brisk boil.....check (Isabella)
Add lovage pollen, stir until dissolved....check (Isabella)
Potion should take on a light golden colour....
Stir slowly, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirs
bring potion back up to a boil and allow to simmer 5 minutes
Add inner membrane ONLY of bloodroots; do NOT include the tough outer membrane of the root!!! DONE
Add apple cider and lionfish heart; potion should take on an iridescent sheen and a light pink to purple cast DONE
Add griffin dandruff and simmer until your potion takes on a deep pink to red sheen. DONE....lovely shade of fushia!
So far so good!!!
DO NOT GO FORWARD, wait for further instructions.
Bella beamed and smiled and stuck her hand out for a handshake. cool all we have to do now is wait for more instructions she said

After all, the only thing more amusing that manufactured love is a manufactured love triangle." A sinister smirk crossed the Professor's face.
"I commend those of you who noticed that the lovage seeds are not in the instructions just yet. My herbology star-students may also have noticed that the seeds themselves are a good deal larger than typical lovage seeds, and are also a slightly softer and more pliable than a traditional lovage seed." Indeed, the seeds were not truly tiny as normal lovage seeds are, but instead were each about the size of a sunflower seed and had a little bit of give when pressed gently.
"These particular lovage seeds I have provided for you have been pre-treated- first soaked for 9 days in a tincture of bubotuber pus and grain alcohol, then kept for at least one calendar year in a tisane of rosemary, damiana, and balm of Gilead blossoms. In doing this, we have infused the seeds with a bit of a potion-ingredient-within-a-potion ingredient. You can find such pre-treated seeds at any apothecary."
"As I said, this next part is a bit tricky, and you will need the assistant of a partner for this. Working together, one of you will gently -- GENTLY -- peel back the outer seed coat - that firm, dark 'shell' on each seed. As SOON as the seed coat is exposed, the other student will take one of the tiny pins found at each workstation and pierce the hilum- for those of you who have not studied your herbology, that is the indentation in the seed where it normally attaches to the plant stalk. You must work quickly, for the oils you wish to extract will evaporate almost as soon as the seed coat is held open! Once you have pierced the seed, you will catch the single drop of oil that you will find in each seed on a stirring spoon and immediately place it in your potion, stirring it three times clockwise. Do this for each seed until you have three drops of freshly harvested lovage-seed oil in your potions. I expect it may take you several tries to accomplish this, so feel free to take more treated lovage seeds from the potions supplies if needed. Also, please note that it the lovage oil smells terrible on its own and will irritate your skin terribly if it comes into direct contact, so please do not get it on your fingers-- or your partner's fingers."
"As soon as you have three drops of lovage seed oil in your potion, take turns stirring the cauldron vigorously-- passionately, one might say -- until your potion begins to thicken and boil. Your arms will grow tired, I have no doubt, but if done well the potion will begin to shift colors, and eventually will reach the consistency of maple syrup and smell absolutely intoxicating. Please restrain yourselves from drinking the potion, however... At least, not until instructed to do so, for there is one... final... step... in our process." He smirked again as he said this, as though daring them to drink it. He knew how difficult it would be to resist if they brewed it correctly!
"I will come around the room and observe; please feel free to ask questions. I know this is a rather tricky bit of work, but then, love itself is a tricky business, is it not?" He smiled at the students, his livery, wrinkled lips stretching into a rather creepy grin.
Bella saw Professor smile after the last sentence a small blush crept across her face but when she saw how the professor's smile turned to a creepy grin she shuddered.she turned to Jack hoping he didnt see her blush and shuddering. exactly that is what i was thinking about.the lovage seed we hadnt used it at all she said so i guess we should better get started with extracting the oil then Bella said

"Mmm, yeah...way more than one now," she agreed, her gaze turning away from the professor and back towards Cope. Their potion was a fuchsia-type color now, so phase one was officially complete---and correct! LouAnn didn't really want to be the one to extract the oil, though. The way Professor Kazimeriz talked, one wrong move could ruin things for good. "I'll hold the seed," she replied.
With the seed finally in her hand, LouAnn began to gently peel back the outer seed coat. She moved a bit closer to Cope, so it'd hopefully be easier on him to try and pierce the hilum and extract the oil. "Alright, Cope...ready?" she asked.
Copernicus picked up the pin and waited for LouAnn to peel back the outer coat. "I'm ready."
She peeled back the seed coat, and he quickly jabbed the needle into the hilum to extract the oil. He collected it with his spoon and quickly dropped the oil into their potion, following it with the spoon. Three stirs.

And now for the next seed.
"Mmkay, and...it's open!" she said, hoping he'd be able to properly get that oil extracted. Of course he did, just as LouAnn had suspected he would. The oil was out of the seed and into the potion in the blink of an eye! "Cool...awesome job." Without wasting any time, LouAnn grabbed for a second seed. Just two more drops, and they'd be done with the oil extracting. LouAnn would be glad to have that in the past, as the chance of losing that precious little drop made her a little nervous.
LouAnn carefully peeled back the outer seed coat of the second seed. She just knew that Cope would be able to snag that second drop just as perfectly as he'd snagged the first! "Alright, Cope...ready!" she exclaimed.

When she seen he was already peeling the second seed, Marilyn rushed to help. She poked the pin into the center with precision...not wanting to have to endure this smell any longer than necessary.

Carter watched as the second drop of oil fell into the cauldron. He then stirred the potion clockwise three times. "Only one more left." he said as he stirred. They were really good at this. He wasn't sure at the beginning of the school year how well he'd do in potions, but he seemed to be fairing well.

Marilyn's eyes followed the oil and grimaced. She gingerly picked up the final seed and held it out to Carter. "I've been thinking...if we do have to ingest this...potion..."

Carter took the last seed and began peeling it. "Are you worried about that? It can't be that bad. And plus, we'll all know what's going on. I'm actually hoping that we do have to." he said. It would be kind of exciting to feel a little loopy. And plus everyone would be saying ridiculous things.

So all Mina needed was to find a group to work with. Her potion as pretty much done and all it needed was the lovage seed oil. Glancing around she craned her head looking for possible groups. That's what I get for not making more boy friends when I first got here.
Seriously, how hard should it be to find a pair that needed a third?
Lucy smiled at him, noticing he really knew how to stir.
"Well, it's good exercise. But I prefer running," she said sheepishly. He looked like he had everything under control, so she let her eyes wander around the room--many people were close to being done, and she was glad they had worked fast and efficiently.
"Hey, I think we're one of the first ones done!" she said excitedly to Fyo.
Fyo grinned at her remark. "I prefer a good swim," he said, honestly. Water was like... a second home. Clean, river water, that is. He continued to stir with a passion, and his arms actually began to grow a little tired. It was then that the potion began to thicken. Thank Heavens!
The contents came to a boil, and their consistency was that of maple syrup, and the scent was amazing, like chocolate or a fresh roll of parchment or dried grass or... Lissy. Or one of those perfumes she wore. Fyo blinked, and looked up at Lucy, in the nick of time to register her last comment.
"Yeah," he said, with a surprised nod. "We are. You did a wonderful job." Lucy had definitely been a great partner.

Jake loved maple syrup.
He wouldn't resist.
Scooting his stool further away from the workstation, Jake glanced sideways at Celandine and then gripped the desk, bowing his head and taking deep breaths. Could he feign illness and leave?
Maybe...
But... gahhhh. Now what?
This wouldn't be easy. Cela checked her gloves again nervously and glanced back at Jake.
"Which bit do you want to do?"
She peeked around the class and shifted her things over so if anyone else wanted to work with them there would be space. Hopefully they'd get someone who was expert.

"I'll try the first part," he shrugged, looking uncertainly around, making no move to start. "Cela," Jake added in a low voice. "Do we have to do this? I'm sssssure... th-that... we m-m-might be able t-to find a wwwway out of th-this."

Cela shook her head. It wasn't worth it. She was pretty sure that yes she could get out of it, but Kazimeriz would be disappointed in her if she did anything like that. At least this part was sort of more Herbology-y than potions-y in her head.
"You pull the sead coat thingy back and I pierce the hilum. Celandine picked up the little pin and the stirring spoon and took a deep breath.
"Put your gloves on." She told Jake bossily.

People with morals... just let the side down.
"Fine," Jake muttered, giving Cela a salute when she told him to put his gloves on. He did just that, and grabbed some tweezer-like objects. Starting on the first seed of the three, Jake let out a breath and moved closer, gently peeling back the outer shell thing and moving back so Celandine could see. He kind of got the urge to stab one of the seeds to see what might happen, buut something told him Cela and Kaz might be... a little displeased if he did that.

Snickering, she checked the time and saw that the five minutes were almost up.
Reading quickly through the instructions again, she noticed there was another part that she should probably get done. "Hey Josh, when you're done with the Bloodroot, put it into the potion since five minutes will probably be up, and then get the apple cider. I'll work on the Lionfish heart really quick." Taking the heart, and trying not to gross out, she quickly minced it (to perfection of course), and waited for the other ingredients to go in.

She was a Ravenclaw so probably could compherend this without further explanation or he hoped she would. ''And you have just joined the best team in this class Ravie'' he nodded with a smirk ''Be proud''. He turned back to peeling the bloodroots as the two girl spoke to each other. He nodded again while working on the roots when Rose introduced him. ''Nice to meet you'' though this was a hard thing to say since eh thought he might do 'not nice' things later on in the class. 'Let's hope the best for the girl or girls'
''Okay and Destiny can join us too'' he said once he was finished with the last bloodroot and Rose planned the next directions for them. ''I don't think that'd be any problem it'll be me who you are going to observe anyway. It cannot hurt you''. He cleaned the knife with the sleeve of his robe and added the bloodroots inside the boiling potion. Then he looked at their new team member ''Can you bring that Griffin dandruff, Keeley? It says 1 dram there.'' and he looked for the apple ciders measuring them for 8 ounces and added it into the liquid ''I'm done''. They had to do this quick, a tricky work for the lovege seeds was waiting for them.

Keeley thought about what Josh had said, and she didn't feel very relieved any more. "Well, I'm glad I have. But let's hope we're not the best at making this potion really strong." Urg. These other students probably thought she was some freak. Well, she did have neon pink hair. Keeley thought about this for a minute, and changed it to white blonde, a more normal color. Ok, griffin dandruff. She could do that. That poor griffin is probably happy to have his dandruff gone. "Sure." she replied, measuring out the flakes and poring them in. "I'm done too. Now, who wants to do the loveage seeds?"

Evelyn watched as everything was put into the potion, including the lionfish heart she just minced. Smiling as the potion turned to the weird pink and purplish color it described on the board, she glanced at Josh and then Keeley, and had to do a double take on her. "Wasn't your hair like...pink before?" Frowning, for sure that the girls' hair was pink, slowly turned back to her station. "Now we just need to let it simmer until it turns red before going on to the lovage seeds, which shouldn't be that hard. Just need to be quick. So, who's good at not breaking things?"

"Oh, er, yeah. I'm a metamorphagus. Ya know, I can change how I look?" Keeley didn't really like talking about this, but whatever. Not breaking things? Keeley was queen of breaking things. "Not me, definately not me."

Meh.
Hooray for awkward lame questions. But it was probably a good thing she was doing this assignment with a partner. That way she got to know more people. It was about time Livvy met up with some different people that she didn't know and weren't in the little group of people she hung out with, nor were they involved in Quidditch. Or in her house. Wait. What house was he in?
Livvy turned her head slightly towards him to see. Oh. He was in Ravenclaw too. She held no recollection of him. Good job Livvy. Couldn't even recognize students from her own house.
"Oh you are?! I guess that's a good thing right? I'm a sixth year so I still got another year to go. What are you going to do after you graduate?" she asked, curiously for her own benefit. She wanted to get ideas on what people actually did after they graduated and considering that Samson was graduating this term......yeaaahh.
Ehm. Done already. There wasn't much to the job so no wonder he was done. Livvy smiled and nodded her head as she picked up the crushed fluxweed and held it over the cauldron. She squeezed it gently three times, watching as three drops of the pollen fell into the potion. "Right. So the lovage seeds. Eck. They DOOOO sound hard," Livvy said as she set the fluxweed back down. But she wouldn't complain. Nyeaaahhhh.
When she was about to gather up the lovage seeds, Samson had already done so. Oh. Mhm. Taking a deep breath, Livvy nodded her head. "Here goes nothing," she said as she reached over to gently peel the outer layer. Once the seed's coat was exposed, Livvy instructed, "Get the pin." They had to pierce the hilium part of the seed apparently?
The professor watched as the students found partners -- well, most of them. Ah, the curse of co-educational facilities, there never seemed to be an equal balance of boys to girls! "If you are unable to find a partner of the opposite gender, please join a workstation where a boy-girl 'couple' is already in process, but brew your own cauldron of potion.
Wesley had forgotten they where making a love potion. The thrill of success had filled her head with nothing but happiness and pride, but now, with Professor Kazimirez's words hanging like storm clouds overhead, all of her earlier feelings came rushing back.
She didn't want to drink it! She didn't want to fall in love! She didn't even want to be here!
Squirming in her seat, the small child bit her lip, and, after a considerable pause, finally spoke, "I'll go get them."
Jumping down from the stool, not waiting for Tiberius to respond, Wesley went to fetch the large lovage seeds.
Tibi winced at Kazimeriz's description of the next steps. That sounded... complicated. He watched as Wesley scampered off to get the seeds and sighed heavily. She seemed nice enough, but he really didn't want to be in love with her, however briefly.
When she returned, Tibi put on his best fake smile and gestured to the seeds. "Which part do you want to do?"

Dumping the seeds onto the table, Wesley stared at Tibi as he spoke, and then back at the seeds. "Oh..." That was a good question. "The p-pealing?" She trusted Tiberius with the needle. She didn't trust herself. Plus, seeds where kinda like plant babies, and Wesley didn't want to go poking holes in babies. Even though, technically, peeling it was just as bad.
Taking off her gloves, she inserted her index fingernails into the seed's crack. "O-on the c-count of th-three?" She closed her eyes tightly, so she wouldn't have to watch all the seed puss come out.
