And once again, you enter the dank, dark cave that is the Hogwarts potions classroom... but something has changed. Unlike the environment of the previous class, which was characterized by a clash of noxious odors, this time the classroom is filled with...
THE BEST. SMELLS. EVER.
Though the room is still cast in the typical gloom from the flickering candle wall sconces, unlike during the last class this time the air smells sweet, with notes of chocolate, vanilla, fresh coffee, light florals and fresh breezes, newly cut grass... A thousand lovely scents all harmoniously combining to create a symphony of sweet smells. Small flames are burning under a series of cauldrons simmering at the back of the room, and there are the typical rows of workstations with two stools at each station.
A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.
At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:
Quote:
POTIONS CLASS: LOVE POTIONS
Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. I expect my younger students are now able to set up their workstations as well; if you need help, please ask an older student.
You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.
--Professor Kazimeriz
Class Synopsis:
The class began with a discussion on Love Potions- the theory behind them and their classification.
Then, the students discussed probable ingredients in love potions based on their knowledge of potion ingredients; this lead to the lab assignment, in which the students were to partner with a person of the opposite gender and brew a basic Class XX love potion.
The students received instruction on how to remove infused oils from their pre-treated lovage seeds, and were instructed to work in pairs to complete this task.
Next, the students were instructed to add a single drop of swan blood to the potion, bottled a draught, and sample each other's work. Ah... Love!
Lucy noticed her was trying to calm her down, and it was effective...somewhat.
She smiled at him and said,"Yes, we'll work something out...Do you have a girlfriend?" The question popped out of her mouth before she could stop herself. She only wanted to know so he wouldn't get his girlfriend mad or something...in that case, Lucy would have to take the potion...well, as long he was happy...Gosh, she was such a good person.
She watched as Fyo peeled the seed and held the pin in her hand, ready to expel the helium. As soon as the outer covering was off, Lucy pierced the helium and caught the oil in a spoon. Then, she proceeded to add the oil to the potion, all while making sure that it didn't get on anyone's hands. Finally, she stirred clockwise three times.
"Phew, that was stressful! Only two more times and we'll be done..." She said to him, realizing that 'done' meant that the potion was ready to be drunk. Perhaps they could test the potion on someone else? Or would that be rude?
Fyo blinked. Of course, he understood why she asked butttt... well, it was sorta unexpected. "Yes," he admitted, a little sheepishly. He had already kissed someone else under the effects of 'magic' - if it might be put that way - earlier this year, and that had been bad enough.
Especially because some people had blamed him.
Even called him a cheater.
But this was not the time to think of that. He nodded when she breathed with relief, then said, "Do you want to peel the next seed? I could pierce the Hilum, this time." That would be fair, wouldn't it?

"Oh, ok, just asking, because, you know, she'll probably freak out if she knew what we're doing in Potions..." Lucy babbled.
Nevertheless, she still didn't want to take the potion.
When he asked her to peel the next seed, she accepted.
"Sure, I'll peel it. That way, we both get to participate!" Lucy claimed as she grabbed the next seed and started peeling it. It was rather tough, but she managed to peel it completely.
However, before she had completely peeled it, she said to Fyo, "Quick, get ready to prick it!"

Reese bit her lower lip as she watched Torin carefully pull back the outer seed coat of the first seed. Thank goodness Torin was a herbology nerd and was good at this kind of stuff. It would have taken her AGES to get that done. She might even had to go get another seed, because she might have messed up! She would rather have Torin pull the seed coats off all three seeds, then have her do it and then mess up.
She picked up one of the tiny pens and took a close look at the seed Torin was holding out towards her. Hmm. That looked like the hilum and with that, she pierced the seed and quickly grabbed the stirring spoon and collected the little drop of oil. GAH! This stuff smelled horrible. Wrinkling her nose, she quickly put the one drop of oil in the potion. Then, she stirred the potion three times clockwise before looking back towards Torin.
"You can take the outer coat off the next seed, too," she said.

Fyo was glad she had lightened up. It made him feel less tense, more focused on their work, and less on the fact that one of them might have to drink the love potion they were making.
He hoped it didn't work. HEHE!
"Sure," he said with a polite smile. He peeled off the tough, outer coating, and quickly held out the seed for her to pierce.

Carter held the seed over the cauldron so that the horrible smelling drop of oil landed in it. He then stirred it three times clockwise. "Well that wasn't too bad." he said starting to peel the second seed.

She pierced the last seed, and caught the smelly oil in a spoon. Then Lucy quickly added it to the potion and stirred like there was no tomorrow. Stirring was hard work, especially for a girl! She hoped their hard work would pay off...or did she? What if the potion didn't work? Well, that would be a disappointment, but then again, neither of them would have to feel embarrassed! Hmmph.
After stirring like crazy, Lucy looked over at Fyo and said, "Would you like to sir for a bit? You look like you have plenty of muscle!" She joked.

Fyo had thought he would stir - after all, it would be ungentlemanly to let Lucy stir, would it not? - but she had grabbed the stirrer and begun the task before he could so much as blink an eyelid.
He nodded quickly at her question, and then grinned at her last comment. "I am," he said, with a friendly smile, as he shifted so that he could stir the contents of the cauldron. It was tough work, but Fyo was used to exercise that was a lot harder, and it came naturally to him.

STANDARD CLASS XX POTION BASE
STEP ONE:
Purified water, 4 ounces
Fluxweed, two bunches- finely crushed
Lovage pollen - 2 drams
3 lovage seeds, whole
Bloodroot, 3 roots- split lengthwise, scrape inner membrane out
Apple cider, 8 ounces
Lionfish heart, minced
Griffin dandruff, 1 dram
Warm water until just before boiling.
Crush fluxweed with mortar and pestle, add to water. Allow to come to a brisk boil.
Add lovage pollen, stir until dissolved.
Potion should take on a light golden colour.
Stir slowly, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirs
Bring potion back up to a boil and allow to simmer 5 minutes
Add inner membrane ONLY of bloodroots; do NOT include the tough outer membrane of the root!!!
Add apple cider and lionfish heart; potion should take on an iridescent sheen and a light pink to purple cast
Add griffin dandruff and simmer until your potion takes on a deep pink to red sheen.
Destiny shrugged at Evelyn and company. 'What? Bubbles are fun.' Party poopers. Cue cheesy smile.
Ahh good. Destiny's potion had boiled and simmered. Next part was to add the bloodroot. 'How do I get the membranie thingy out?' She adjusted her glasses and read the board. 'Riiiight.'
Carefully cutting the bloodroot lengthwise, she scraped the inner membranie thing-a-ma-bob into her now simmering potion. 'Apple cider. Always reminds me of pie.' Too busy day-dreaming about pie, Destiny spilled the apple cider she was holding all over her lap. 'Crud.' She measured another 8ounces of apple cider and poured it into her cauldron before she had time to daydream again.
Its a good thing there is no lionfish heart pie, or else the minced heart would be on Destiny's lap too. 'Grossss!' she said as she plopped the heart into the cauldron and watched as the potion turned an ugly pink color. 'Grossss.'

Cope had grown quiet as he worked, something LouAnn picked up on right away and made a mental note of. It probably helped with concentration, which was an aspect of brewing she needed to work on. Getting distracted while measuring and cutting probably wasn't the best idea in the whole world.
LouAnn's eyes fell on the mixture as Cope added pieces of the membrane and the apple cider to the mixture. It was then her turn to add the lionfish heart, so she carefully lifted the minced pieces and lowered them into the cauldron. "Hmm...an iridescent sheen and a light pink to purple cast," she mumbled. "...just one more step after this one."
"More than just one now," Copernicus laughed quietly as soon as Kazimeriz had finished giving them additional instructions. He added the griffin dandruff and turned the heat down, watching as their potion slowly turned fuchsia. Perfection!
"Now... I guess this is the tricky part, right? Do you want to hold the seed or extract the oil?"
Dead. Dead. Dead. DEEEAADD. A fluttery feeling was felt in the bottom of her stomach and Livvy couldn't help but feel nervous about this. Could she detect something of unhappiness on the boy's face as he walked over? Oh yes she could. She was glad that the feeling was mutual. Really? Who would want to do this activity?
And then he spoke up. Blink. Blink.
What he said was said in a completely serious tone, but it sounded rather funny coming out of his mouth. Pfft. It would sound funny coming from ANYBODY'S mouth.
Livvy's lips curved up into a slightly bitter smile, but she'd be kind. Plus he looked older. And BIGGER. She wasn't going to mess with him. Unless. Of course. He messed with her. Never insult someone that used to be a Beater. "Strictly professional. But of course. Let's just... do this and get it over with," she said, sighing inwardly and looking up to the ceiling in misery. Why? WHY? Why did she have to come to this lesson?
Mhm. Samson. Didn't seem like he was too fond of introductions. Livvy glanced around the room, hoping to maybe find a partner that she actually KNEW. No offense to Samson, though honestly, Livvy believed that he'd be quite joyous if she found a different partner. ERGH. Jack. Why hadn't she seen him sooner?! But it was too late. The Ravenclaw prefect was already working with someone else. Well at least Livvy knew that Samson wasn't secretly in love her. That'd be safe. Though a part of her wished that Garret
She scowled and glanced back over at Samson. Directions? Oh right. Livvy pulled out the piece of paper where she had jotted down the directions.

"You can warm up the water and I'll crush the fluxweed," she ordered as she took it out and began to crush it gently with the blade of her cutting knife that she used for potions. Livvy didn't even bother to ask whether or not he wanted to. Surely there wasn't ANYTHING about this assignment that he would want to do.
Samson did as he was told, and fired up the cauldron. He wasn't going to complain. He didn't like having to glance at the book and perform what was required. That would make him dizzy. It was better to have someone dictate to him. Less work for him.
Well, as it seemed they both hated the activity, it was no reason for the partnership to be bitter. They were, after all, working for a common cause, and that was to a) get a good grade, and b) get out of here as soon as possible.
"You're not a person of many words, are you," he observed, at a lack for words himself. He didn't want the activity to be boooring. Meh.
Alex looked around to see no one neede a partner. She sat down trying to follow the directions herself wishingthere weren't so many people here. Feeling like an idiot she kept her head down not looking at anyone and started working on her potion.
Fyo had thought he would stir - after all, it would be ungentlemanly to let Lucy stir, would it not? - but she had grabbed the stirrer and begun the task before he could so much as blink an eyelid.

"Well, it's good exercise. But I prefer running," she said sheepishly. He looked like he had everything under control, so she let her eyes wander around the room--many people were close to being done, and she was glad they had worked fast and efficiently.
"Hey, I think we're one of the first ones done!" she said excitedly to Fyo.
Kay was done with all she could do. She looked around the room and still didn't have someone to work with. She hope she would get someone before the next step started.

"If you are unable to find a partner of the opposite gender, please join a workstation where a boy-girl 'couple' is already in process, but brew your own cauldron of potion. After all, the only thing more amusing that manufactured love is a manufactured love triangle." A sinister smirk crossed the Professor's face.
"I commend those of you who noticed that the lovage seeds are not in the instructions just yet. My herbology star-students may also have noticed that the seeds themselves are a good deal larger than typical lovage seeds, and are also a slightly softer and more pliable than a traditional lovage seed." Indeed, the seeds were not truly tiny as normal lovage seeds are, but instead were each about the size of a sunflower seed and had a little bit of give when pressed gently.
"These particular lovage seeds I have provided for you have been pre-treated- first soaked for 9 days in a tincture of bubotuber pus and grain alcohol, then kept for at least one calendar year in a tisane of rosemary, damiana, and balm of Gilead blossoms. In doing this, we have infused the seeds with a bit of a potion-ingredient-within-a-potion ingredient. You can find such pre-treated seeds at any apothecary."
"As I said, this next part is a bit tricky, and you will need the assistant of a partner for this. Working together, one of you will gently -- GENTLY -- peel back the outer seed coat - that firm, dark 'shell' on each seed. As SOON as the seed coat is exposed, the other student will take one of the tiny pins found at each workstation and pierce the hilum- for those of you who have not studied your herbology, that is the indentation in the seed where it normally attaches to the plant stalk. You must work quickly, for the oils you wish to extract will evaporate almost as soon as the seed coat is held open! Once you have pierced the seed, you will catch the single drop of oil that you will find in each seed on a stirring spoon and immediately place it in your potion, stirring it three times clockwise. Do this for each seed until you have three drops of freshly harvested lovage-seed oil in your potions. I expect it may take you several tries to accomplish this, so feel free to take more treated lovage seeds from the potions supplies if needed. Also, please note that it the lovage oil smells terrible on its own and will irritate your skin terribly if it comes into direct contact, so please do not get it on your fingers-- or your partner's fingers."
"As soon as you have three drops of lovage seed oil in your potion, take turns stirring the cauldron vigorously-- passionately, one might say -- until your potion begins to thicken and boil. Your arms will grow tired, I have no doubt, but if done well the potion will begin to shift colors, and eventually will reach the consistency of maple syrup and smell absolutely intoxicating. Please restrain yourselves from drinking the potion, however... At least, not until instructed to do so, for there is one... final... step... in our process." He smirked again as he said this, as though daring them to drink it. He knew how difficult it would be to resist if they brewed it correctly!
"I will come around the room and observe; please feel free to ask questions. I know this is a rather tricky bit of work, but then, love itself is a tricky business, is it not?" He smiled at the students, his livery, wrinkled lips stretching into a rather creepy grin.
Blink. It was decided. Professor Kaziman was a WEIRDO. And he was just... ahhh... creepy. Love triangles? Really? That just wasn't cool. Having someone fall in love with you with a love potion was already crazy enough. And to have a THIRD person part of the activity.... ? WAS HE INSANE? Yes. He was. He really was. And his smile was just really creepy. Love itself is a tricky business? Shudder.
Livvy made no comment as she crushed the fluxweed and finished off the job. She peeked over at Samson every now and then, with curiosity and to see if the boy was on track of things. There was nothing worse than having a partner that slacked off. BLECH. She hated that.
Meh? She glanced over at Samson when he spoke to her. Oh. So they were speaking? Livvy just smiled sheepishly and shrugged her shoulders. "I guess. Unless you want to talk about something? I just sort of want to get this all over with or so... but it IS rather dull. So. Uhm. What year are you in?" It was a LAME question, but Livvy couldn't think of anything better. Maybe it would lead off to some better ones.
"Oh. And are you done? Cuz' if you are, we can move onto the lovage seeds and extract the pollen. Apparently we have to do it together," she said, shrugging her shoulders.

"Now... I guess this is the tricky part, right? Do you want to hold the seed or extract the oil?"
SPOILER!!: New Directions
"Mmm, yeah...way more than one now," she agreed, her gaze turning away from the professor and back towards Cope. Their potion was a fuchsia-type color now, so phase one was officially complete---and correct! LouAnn didn't really want to be the one to extract the oil, though. The way Professor Kazimeriz talked, one wrong move could ruin things for good. "I'll hold the seed," she replied.
With the seed finally in her hand, LouAnn began to gently peel back the outer seed coat. She moved a bit closer to Cope, so it'd hopefully be easier on him to try and pierce the hilum and extract the oil. "Alright, Cope...ready?" she asked.
