As you enter the dank, dark cave of a potions classroom, the first thing you might notice is the smell. A thousand different scents, good and bad, mingle together in the moist, rich air of the musty dungeon room. The room is gloomy: the lighting is dim, mostly from wall sconces where candles flicker but also from small flames under a series of cauldrons which are simmering at the back of the room. There are rows of workstations with two stools at each station.

A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.

At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:

Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. First years, please ask an older student for assistance.

You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.

Class Synopsis:

The professor has entered the room. A brief discussion about the Cardinal Rule of Potions (Know thy Ingredients) has taken place.

A Worksheet has been distributed; students have been instructed to write equal and opposite ingredient pairs on this worksheet to familiarize themselves with complementary ingredients to understand the concept of negators, or neutralizing ingredients.

A brief discussion about Golpalott's FIRST law was introduced: for every ingredient, there is at least one equal and opposite ingredient that can be used as an antidote to the first ingredient.

This led to a discussion on Golpalott's Third Rule: the antidote for a blended poison will be equal to more than the sum of the antidotes for each of the separate components.

The class was informed that they have all been poisoned by means of a potion that absorbs through skin contact. Their goal? To identify their symptoms and brew the antidote to their poison by the end of class. Instructions can be found here.

"Brahmi.... blah blah.... helps in increasing a person’s intelligence.... YAY! Thats what we want! Smart juice!"

Okay, and now for the moment of truth, or death, in this case. Becca scooped some of the brownish liquid into a vile and chugged it down. She waited a minute, not feeling very different, then she quickly examined herself. Wow! She wasn't disoriented, or depressed! But... the scales were still there? Becca groaned loudly,"Ugh, Professor, do you think you could give me a hand with the scales? They're the only symptom I'm still having and I just haven't got a clue of how to get rid of them!"

Points taken away? Because he made he this way. Pssssh, so not fair. Destiny was going to have to keep a more watchful eye on Evelyn. She gave her a 'you better not play with fire anymore' look. 'Your hand looks horrible, sorta like my face.' she pointed to her face which had boils all over and a now bruised eye. 'You have to put something on it.' She looked at the professor and gave him a 'make her use it' look.

Kazimeriz chuckled. "The 'mystery' ingredients refer to the ones that cure your individual symptoms. That, plus the quintessence formula-- which has in this case already been determined and is on the board -- combined makes your completed antidote."

Well.

Well Cela didn't knowwwww if she should add the whole thing, but she was sure that Nico wouldn't have put it in her kit like that if it wasn't okay. And through the rest of his notes it was always very clear when it wasn't okay to do so.

Soooo while it was coming down to a simmer, she crushed up the Water hyssop because like, wasn't there some thing about crushing and stuff being good for making stuff come out and happen and stuff?

Then she slooooooooooooooooooowly, in a very literal way, added the crushed up Brahmi to the cauldron. Okaaaaay so now they boil it again until its all thick and syrupy and stuff? Celandine turned the heat up and watched it nervously.

Wait. WAIT. They had to cast sperevelio to check if it was right, but she wasn't sure that the poison was letting her be smart enough to do so. Dilemma! Did that mean they had to drink the antidote and let it work before casting the spell to figure out whether it was right or not?

Ooohhh all this thinking was head hurty!

Back to his seat? Happily, Copernicus trudged back to his seat and found a chair. The cauldron was lit, and Cope stared at it for a long time. Why was the cauldron lit?

He looked around at the other students, hoping someone could tell him why his cauldron was boiling. Nearby, he spotted a familiar face. Celandine. I know her. "Cel. What are we doing here?"

Finally!!! Becca was so anxious to get those disgusting scales off of her she nearly ran to the book shelf! "Thanks Kaz-I mean Professor Kazimeriz!", she quickly corrected herself, having almost said Kazi, and by doing which would be disrespectful, and her parents would kill her saying; "Haven't we taught you respect?" She skimmed the row until she found the one she was looking for and then gently but forcefully ripped it off the shelf and brought it back to her seat, starting to read.

Chris nodded he pulled out his wnad to do the spell. It couldn't be too hard. He was sure there were plenty of good stupid wizards! "Ok so the spell now." He pointed his wand at the parchment. "Special..uos Revierls." he thought he said it right. Nothing happened. "Cela how about you try." he furrowed his brow in frustrated thought. He could have done this eaisly before!

Professor Kazimeriz nodded to Latrowski. "Do hurry, for the effects of the poison will start affecting you all soon if you have not created an antidote... At any time you may start to feel unpleasant effects including strong, noxious gas, nausea, itching, or the feeling that your skin is crawling ... As the poison progresses you may feel dizzy or feel other highly unpleasant symptoms which may affect your ability to brew. Do not dilly dally, lest you be like my former student Lester Slough, who waited so long to take the antidote to a skin crawling potion that his skin got up and crawled away, never to be seen again!"

Evelyn stared uncertainly at the jar that was set on the table. Why did she need it? Her hand was fine! FINE! Okay...MAYBE she'll use it. Her hand was hurting. And she was still slightly dizzy...

Evelyn giggled again when she looked over at Destiny. Her face did look horrible and she tried as hard as she could to not say that. But..."What happened to your eye?" she pointed at it. It looked like it was starting to bruise around it.

Bruise...

Laugh!

Bruise was a funny word. Evelyn broke out into another fit of giggles, holding onto her sides since they were starting to ache. When she started to levitate again, she quickly grabbed onto the table and pulled herself back down. "Make me stop levitating Destiiiinnnnyyyy." she whined slightly before laughing again. Life was fun at the moment! Even though it was horrible... 'Wait what? That doesn't make sense. Does it? I don't know.'

Looking down at her book, which was slightly on top of her parchment now, some words that she had written down caught her eye. Confusion! "Destiiinnyy. Looook." Evelyn sang, pointing to the words on her parchment. "Runespoor Eggs will make me...not...confused!" Smiling proudly at her genius find, she glanced back at the jar of stuff that would supposedly help her hand. Okay...yea she really needed it now.

Hearing her name being called, Mina turned her attention from her cauldron to the source of the noise. Make a face she frowned. What is Daisy doing? She's going to get in trouble and maybe us too. Wave her hand slightly at her, she whispered softly. "What's wrong, Daisy?" Looking around again and then back to her lit cauldron.

She really didn't want to bring more attention to herself at the moment. The strange heat flashes and cold sweats were back and becoming quite unpleasant and her wrists were now a bluish hue and swollen. Great, I'm going to look like a smurf!

Looking back at the board and her notes, she continues on the quintessence. She had the everything ready, well almost....3 ounces purified water CHECK 3 doxy eggs, whole CHECK 2 ounces horned toad innards, chopped still need to chop twelve sprigs fluxweed, crushed to a fine powder needs crushed. Okay, she still had some work to do.

Turning to see if Carter was still okay and not hiding again, she started to chop up the innards before moving to crushing the fluxweed.

Lorcan realised that he was being told off and scowled at the professor a little bit. She looked up at the guy who had come to heal his thumb. He seemed a little bit forgetful but healed it anyway. "Cheers" Lorcan muttered and even though he was grateful he knew he sounded resentful.

He went back to his cauldron and started to see if he could sort out the base potion. He re-lit the fire and then looked at the textbook for something to add to his potion to get rid of his anger.

He raised his hand. "Sir, should I use hellebore as a calming ingredient? Or would moonstone be better?" He was seething, casting dark looks at everyone around him. The sooner he sorted this out the better.

oooooh what? Celandine blinked at Chris, her attention back on her stupid buddy. She struggled for a moment or two, not being able to make the connection of intent, wand movement and incantation, so she didn't even bother trying to cast the spell, instead she thrust her hand in the air.

"Professor can I just try our antidote? Cos like, um the thing with the stuff and the spell is hard!"

As soon as Kazimeriz started to speak, Copernicus felt a sense of foreboding. Poison? Antidotes? Why was this the first he was hearing about all this? Quickly, he jotted down Kazimeriz's words.

If he got started in a hurry, Cope knew he could get the Quintessence brewed before the symptoms started to present. He dumped the purified water into his cauldron and let it boil. On the sheet in front of him, Cope ticked off the first step.

Hmm... what were they doing in potions today?

IT - WAS - DISGUSTING! DISGUSTING!'' What! He just did the ultimate sin. He bit his tongue to stop himself which hurt a lot and caused him to spread some crushed fluxweed off the table.

Tori was soon crying over her cauldron as she finished chopping her fluxweed and sobbed miserably as she crushed them."Why are you yelling at me? I didn't do anything." she cried uncontrollably adding her ingredients to her boiling cauldron of purified water, doxy eggs and horned toad innards. "I'll try to help you ok? Don't worry w-w-we'll be f-fine..." Tori wept. She watched it come to a boil and then she turned it down for it to simmer. Tori thought herself, "I need to calm down...wait, calm down. That's it. That's what I need." She soon started getting angry again. Stomping fiercely across to the cupboard, Tori got her mystery ingredient and headed back to her cauldron. She slowly added an adequate amount of moonstoneto her potion. She chose this since it was mostly used to calm someone down (Draught of Peace). It was the perfect choice for antidote. She allowed it boil up to a thick consistency before turning it down to simmer.

Having a bit of double refraction as she read, Becca decided to just try a beautifying potion, who's ingredients she had memorized for no reason whatsoever. She quickly brewed herself some and allowed it to sit. As she let it sit, she became more dizy, to the point where she had to sit down. After leavig it out for a bit, she rose, quickly on her feet and nearly collapsed, having come up too fast for here head's liking. Without thinking, she grabbed the laddle in the cauldron and then gulped down a huge amount of the potion. Then she blinked furiously, trying to avoid swaying from side to side, liek a tree in the breeze. She took the laddle once more and hheld it up so she could see her face- It was there, no more scales! "Hooray! The horrible ugliness is gone!!" , Becca shouted. All of a sudden, her mouth started to ich tremendously. "Oh kill me now!!", Becca whined overdramatically, knowing that soon she would be okay, because either she would figure it out by the end of the hour, or Kazi would have to give her an antidote. He couldn't just poison her and let her die- but look what happened to the other student. Oh no! She was doomed!

Evelyn giggled again when she looked over at Destiny. Her face did look horrible and she tried as hard as she could to not say that. But..."What happened to your eye?" she pointed at it. It looked like it was starting to bruise around it.

Bruise was a funny word. Evelyn broke out into another fit of giggles, holding onto her sides since they were starting to ache. When she started to levitate again, she quickly grabbed onto the table and pulled herself back down. "Make me stop levitating Destiiiinnnnyyyy." she whined slightly before laughing again. Life was fun at the moment! Even though it was horrible... 'Wait what? That doesn't make sense. Does it? I don't know.'

Looking down at her book, which was slightly on top of her parchment now, some words that she had written down caught her eye. Confusion! "Destiiinnyy. Looook." Evelyn sang, pointing to the words on her parchment. "Runespoor Eggs will make me...not...confused!" Smiling proudly at her genius find, she glanced back at the jar of stuff that would supposedly help her hand. Okay...yea she really needed it now.

'My eye? I got hit with a book!' Destiny rubbed her eye. It did hurt. But that didn't matter now. She wanted the feathers gone. And the wings, but they were pretty cool.

Destiny flipped through the book looking for a levitation cure. Since Marilyn and Destiny were practically almost finished their potion, she figured she should help Evelyn. 'Maybe you being so happy is making you levitate? And your happy because you are confused?' Now Destiny was confused, but not from the poison. 'So you said runespoor?' she flipped to the text on runespoors. She should've memorised the text because she had read it so much. 'Yeah! Runspoors would work!' she said scratching her feathers. 'If not I'll just throw a bezoar down your throat.'

'Now use that stuff.' Destiny pointed to the jar that Kazi left. 'Don't make me tell you again.'

Kay looked at Marie and yelled back at her. "I AM NOT A CRY BABY!" She turn back to her work and finished the base potion. "You need to calm down so we can get this done." Kay said folding her arms.
