As you enter the dank, dark cave of a potions classroom, the first thing you might notice is the smell. A thousand different scents, good and bad, mingle together in the moist, rich air of the musty dungeon room. The room is gloomy: the lighting is dim, mostly from wall sconces where candles flicker but also from small flames under a series of cauldrons which are simmering at the back of the room. There are rows of workstations with two stools at each station.
A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.
At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:
Quote:
POTIONS 101
Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. First years, please ask an older student for assistance.
You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.
--Professor Kazimeriz
Class Synopsis:
The professor has entered the room. A brief discussion about the Cardinal Rule of Potions (Know thy Ingredients) has taken place.
A Worksheet has been distributed; students have been instructed to write equal and opposite ingredient pairs on this worksheet to familiarize themselves with complementary ingredients to understand the concept of negators, or neutralizing ingredients.
A brief discussion about Golpalott's FIRST law was introduced: for every ingredient, there is at least one equal and opposite ingredient that can be used as an antidote to the first ingredient.
This led to a discussion on Golpalott's Third Rule: the antidote for a blended poison will be equal to more than the sum of the antidotes for each of the separate components.
The class was informed that they have all been poisoned by means of a potion that absorbs through skin contact. Their goal? To identify their symptoms and brew the antidote to their poison by the end of class. Instructions can be found here.

Looking down to her seat, it looked like she was...levitating? Holding onto the table, she pulled herself back down so she was sitting on the stool again. "Oh...kay?" Shaking her head and mumbling something to herself, she crushed and cut the fluxweed until they pretty much couldn't be cut...and crushed...anymore. Throwing the stuff with the other ingredients and dropping the knife next to her, close to where Destiny was working, she read what was on the board again.
"Oh...gotta make it boil!" she giggled again, lighting a fire under the cauldron. 'But why does it say to simmer when it needs to be boiled?' AH! Instructions are too confusing!! Evelyn fell into another fit of giggles, flicking stuff off the table, trying to hit people.
Destiny would have soooo rather have whatever Evelyn was poisoned with. She seemed to be having a good time. And now she was levitating. 'I wonder if these things work?' she tried to move her wings but they didn't move. They were just little baby wings. 'We have wings because he' points feathery hand at Kazi 'gave them to us.'
Destiny watched as Evelyn flicked pieces of something at random people. And of course one just happened to hit Destiny and get all stuck in her feathers. 'Okay that is just gross.' She couldn't help but laugh. It was sorta funny..

The blonde's eyes furrowed in concentration as she worked diligently with her fellow Slytherin. Neither of them wanted to have to walk back to the common room in their current state.
The skin that was visible on her hands outside of the dragon hide gloves was started to not only itch but...burn? "Oh no...Boils!!" There was no stopping the startled yelp that escaped her lips.
Destiny turned her attention to Marilyn, after she got whatever out of her feathers. 'I think we can start putting them ingredients in now.' she said scratching her neck feathers. 'Since I don't have boils yet, I guess we can-- never mind I have boils. And they burn!!' Now she looked like a total freak. She went back to work looking for the secret ingredient, well ingredients in this case. 'Lets work on the boils first, because they hurt the worst. Lets use.. porcupine quills. That should work!'

He would gone on and said something even stupider, if Lorcan had not interfered at that very moment.
Which was a blessing in disguise.
"No, but I've -" Fyo stopped. He had been about to blurt "No, but I've seen my sister being killed" when he realized what he had been about to say - he hadn't told anyone that, not even Torin, when the Huffie had been his best friend; not even Alice - and suddenly fell quiet.
It was then he realized what he was doing.
His head was on Torin's shoulder, and there were tears leaking down his cheeks. WHAT THE -? Fyo blinked, quickly and very roughly wiped away the tears with one sleeve and, more embarrassed than he would want to admit, moved closer to his cauldron. I can't believe this, he thought to himself. I nearly told some guy I don't know my worst memory.
Lorcan strode towards the cry baby, who must have been at least a fourth year. Pulling himself up to his full five feet, he stuck his thumb under the cry baby's nose, pulling off the handkerchief. "Fancy a look then." he shouted, "so you can stop staring at me?" He watched the cry baby's face for his reaction as blood started to run down his thumb and into his palm.

Why did these feathers itch so bad?
Having just sprouted several feathers around her neck, Marilyn eyed her notes carefully. She was trying in vain not to scratch and pull at all the strange things protruding from her small body. This class officially blew.
"We're going to have to do a second phase of boiling in this potion...Porcupine quills can't be added to a potion still over an open flame. I wrote down 'crushed snake fangs' as an alternative..."
Marilyn began helping the other girl put the ingredients in the cauldron, allowing it all to quickly heat. What do you think about the crushed snake fangs? There's also dried nettles that helps with boils... She eyed Destiny carefully, wanting her opinion before adding anything. This was just as much Destiny's potion as it was hers. They were both depending on the outcome heavily.

'Oh, I didn't know that.' Destiny replied about the porcupine quills. At least Marilyn read the textbook correctly. It wasn't Destiny's fault though. The feathers were so itchy that is was really hard to concentrate. She just knew she wanted them gone, and the boils. The wings on the other hand were that big of a problem. She could actually live with the wings. She could fly down the halls and never be late for classes. But she didn't need to think about that right now. She needed these boils gone.
'Yeah I think the snake fangs would do good.' Destiny said as she read the text. 'Will we have to make three different potions, since we have three different conditions? And I didn't see anything to get rid of feathers!' She really wanted them feathers gone.

Mina looked up from her parchment and swallowed. I have a 1. Physical changes?!?! She wasn't happy about this at all and to think she always thought potions would be here favorite lesson, but not if she had to get poisoned on the first day. Silly girl, you know it's exciting. Frowning at herself and her little annoying inner voice, she copied down the needed information and started to take notes of all her symptoms.
Looking down at her arm, she pouted. Her skin once perfect skin was turning a very unpleasant color and swelling around her wrist. It almost made her cry. She was very far from being a girlie girl and obsessed with her looks, but she didn't want to look like some freak or something. Maybe daisy roots for the swelling and ... She couldn't think of anything for the color change, but at least she wasn't covered in boils or something, yet. Quite fearful still of just that she went back to her text.
Glancing over at Carter, she felt a chill and frowned. Didn't she just feel very warm earlier? Maybe it was another symptom. Leaning over to Carter she asked, "So how are you doing?" She was kind of hoping he had the same number and they could help each other.

There was a sense of desperation befalling Marilyn's state of mind. What could counter act feathers and wings? There was nothing in the texts about these ailments...and they didn't have time to experiment. On top of that, there was the poison problem...but the Force girl had some ideas where that was concerned.
I think this has to be a combined potion, since we don't have the time to brew three seperately. Okay...I don't think it'd be a bad idea to add some powdered moonstone, also. You know, for calming purposes. Removing the torn remains of her cloak, the feathers and boils covered every inch of exposed skin, from her arms to her legs. I refuse to appear weak right now.
The potion was ready for other ingredients to be added...but there was nothing that said they needed to be added immediately. Marilyn was trying to recall any substance, plant and animal alike, that would help. Do you have any ideas? We could try leeches. They're used in the Shrinking Solution and Polyjuice Potion, helping the body to stretch and contract. What do you think about pairing that with some snake venom? Prehaps it'll cause the wings to shrivel up and ultimately fall off...
She was clearly grasping at straws...It sounded logical, anyway.

puffer-fish eyes
daisy roots
Puffer-fish eyes are used to cause things to swell or increase in size. Daisy root when properly cut is used in the shrinking solution.
runespoor eggs
scurvy-grass
Runespoor eggs helps to enhance mental ability, but scurvy-grass is associated with the inflammation of the brain.

moonstone
The fluids collected from the Glumbumble are linked to melancholy and moonstone is believed to help with emotional balance.
mandrake
valerian root
Mandrakes are used in potions to help restore and the use of the valerian root in the Draught of Living Death implies deep sleep.
Abyssinian shrivelfig or caterpillars
asphodel
Asphodel is commonly associated with the afterlife and underworld and is used in the Draught of Living Death. Both sliced caterpillers and shrivelfig are thought to possible lend age reversing qualities to the shrinking solution. Caterpillars also are reborn as butterflies in some causes. Afterlife vs. New Life.
Looking through her work, she nodded to herself. Her choices did make some sense but she wasn't completely positive the reasoning was spot on and that bothered her a little. Looking back through her text, she wanted to double check once again.

Also, for the purposes of this lesson, the bezoar will be off limits. Having a bezoar on hand is of course always a good idea for any witch or wizard, but you would learn little about antidote creation if you relied on the bezoar! Also, some poisons are not well absorbed by a bezoar. So learning to brew an antidote is an essential skill for any witch or wizard."
He turned to the young, nervous boy- Tibi. "Ah, you ask the right question. The potions you have absorbed all contain many ingredients, but they all differ drastically in effect and each student will have their own unique experience. In the first stage as you brew, you will notice them taking effect."
"As I stated, each parchment is numbered- 1, 2, 3 or 4. Every student whose parchment has a #1 on it will notice that their potion will have physical effects - growing feathers or sprouting boils, becoming furry from head to toe, growing wings, or other changes. Those with parchment #3 will notice emotional changes. Those with Parchment #4 will experience mental changes-- slowed thinking, perhaps, or hysteria, or even temporary madness. Those with Parchment #2 have the wild card-- your potion may affect you emotionally, intellectually or physically, or all three ways. The way your potion affects you should give you clues as to what ingredients are in it, which will help you brew the antidote. The actual poison in the potion will not start to take effect for approximately an hour, giving you ample time to brew an antidote before you begin to fall ill." At this Kazimeriz smirked wickedly.
He looked around the room at his students. "On the board you will find the recipe for your quintessence-- that 'extra element' referred to in Golpalott's Third Law that we just spoke about. For this lesson, you need not figure it out yourselves; that is NEWT level work and very tricky. So, for this lesson, every student will use this recipe as a base for their potion, adding to it the ingredients that will resolve the symptoms they are experiencing, to brew their potion. At the end of the hour, when you believe you have determined the correct antidote, you may use sperevelio to see what was on your parchment and see if you are correct... or if you are doomed." Kazimeriz beamed as though he was delivering happy news.
Kazimeriz tapped the charmed chalkboard once and the following message appeared:
"Good luck to you all - best get brewing, the clock is ticking!" Kazimeriz smiled happily and turned over an ornate hourglass on his desk, starting the countdown.
ooc: Just to make sure it's clear-- you have free reign to get creative with your symptoms and what might 'cure' them! Just make sure your symptoms correspond to the number on your worksheet (1 - Physical Symptoms, 2 - Any Combination of Symptoms, 3 - Emotional Changes and 4 - Mental Changes. You have my permission to change your 'number' if one set of symptoms is more interesting to you than the number you picked. Have fun, and you may feel free to have success or failure as you brew... just be creative and have fun, but keep to the site rules and remember -- if you RP dying or anything crazy like that you really do 'die' in the RP so let's avoid that, mmkay? Any questions, feel free to PM me. Xana~)

He immediately let go of the parchment (as if that would do any good). Let's see, he had a 3 at the top of his page. That meant emotional changes. "I think I feel fine..." he said a little uncertainly. Right after saying this his eyes began darting everywhere and he ducked under the table. "Do you see them Mina?" he asked in a whisper. He smirked, looking around the room. "It will be your job to create the antidote and save yourself... before the class session ends and it is too late."
Kazimeriz leaned against the podium, letting them absorb this news -- just like they are absorbing the poison, mwhahaha -- before he continued. It was moments like this that made him truly love his job.
Chris looked at Professor Kazimeriz in absolute horror. He knwe that they would have to be poisoned somehow in order to find the antidote for it, but poisoned without warning? Through paper?!
....
'Duhhhhh' Chris thought, but nothing happened. He had been hit with a poison that had changed his mental abilities. He looked down at his parchment and it had the number 4 on it. He had no clue what that meant anymore, maybe it had something to do with how loopy he felt. He looked around the table for something that would tell him what to do and found a sheet of paper that had words on it. "Hey, I know some of these words!" he said as if he just discovered Floo Powder. "Hmmm where to start? Oooh Shiney!" he said as the light from a nearby candle hit his Prefect's Badge.
After a minute or two trying to figure out how it was stuck onto his robes, Chris left the badge alone and read the first line of instructions. After trying that once or twice he realized that he was going to have to light a fire and bring things to a boil in his big ole pot here! hepointed his wand and luckily was able to set a low fire underneath. He debated in his 'less than perfect mind' weather or not the fire was supposed to be above or under it but played a game to decide. "Ok add three ounces of purified water." he pulled out his wand and ooh look a pretty fountain! "And 3 Doxy eggs." he reached over the desk and grabbed three of the eggs. In his mind he thought, 'Mmm Eggs wait those don't look right.' and he put them into the cauldren. He was doing great! *Grin*
Daisy walked over to a boy who she thought looked friendly enough to talk to talk to her...."Hi....I'm Daisy Grace Parkingston, is this your first year," she asked friendly and smiling.

Suddenly remembering that she was supposed to find the ingredients that would get rid of her symptoms, she opened her textbook again, leaving it dangerously close to the fire under the cauldron.
"Hmm...okay...I feel...HAPPY!" *Giggle* But she suddenly had to hold onto the table. Maybe she was TOO happy seeing that she felt a little dizzy as well. "But wait...why?" Face set in determination, she read through the book, pulling herself down every now and then from levitating off the chair randomly. "Ugh, for the last time already!" she yelled, pulling herself back down and accidentally bumping her book forward...into the flames.
Oops..
'Book on fire! What do I do? What do I DO?!' She did the first thing that came to mind and that was...throwing it on the floor away from herself. The part of the book that caught fire fell face down on the cold floor, actually extinguishing the flame. "What...was that?" she muttered to herself, wide-eyed, but then out of no where she laughed again. "Destiny! Hey Destiny!" Evelyn called her friend, rather loudly even though she was sitting right next to her. "Deeessstinnyyy." she now whispered, giggling and poking her friend's shoulder. "Did you see that?" she asked, leaning her arm on the table a centimeter away from where the knife was.

2? Wild card? Celandine eyed professor Kazimeriz suspiciously, as if he’d some how conspired that she’d get the number 2. He was soooo all about testing her like all the time. Okay so… symptoms. Celandine sat quietly, doing a mental scan of herself, wriggling her toes and her nose and everything that she could in between. Ok no scales or wings. Cela peeked at some of the other students, wondering what the point of a poison that did that would be; weren’t poisons, like supposed to be discreet and stuff? Or like, something?
Celandine read the recipe on the chalkboard again. Quint-ess-ence? What? She felt like she knew what that was, or like she had a moment ago. She read some more and blinked vapidly at the board.
Blink. Blink. Blink.
What was she supposed to be doing again?

Destiny was starting to panic. She couldn't find anything in the text to get rid of wings and feathers. They had already figured out how to get rid of boils. 'A calming ingredient would be good and I was thinking of the shrinking solution too. Leeches would be perfect.' She flipped to the text about leeches. 'It says leech juice for the shrinking solution. So do we squeeze the juice outta them?' Eww that is so gross. 'Maybe we could throw a rat spleen in instead?' Destiny didn't want to squeeze no leeches. She was just about to say something else when..

Oops..
Book on fire! What do I do? What do I DO?! She did the first thing that came to mind and that was...throwing it on the floor away from herself.
'Evelyn! Your book is on fire! Don't throw it on..the..floor..' Oh, well nevermind that seemed to actually work. This class was crazy. And so was Evelyn. 'Yessssss I saaaaaw it.' she said dragging her words out. 'And what if my feather caught on fire.' That would've been bad. Destiny reached over the table to grab Evelyn's knife that she was practically leaning on. 'Right, I'm just going to move this, before you hurt yourself. I think maybe you should use armadillo bile. Its supposed to sharpen your wit.' She really needed that like now.
Delana was extatic, finally time to make a potion! She was in love with the class already. Sure, she'd just been poisoned by her professor, but at this point she was too excited to care. "hmm... emotional changes? Really? Merlin's been good to me, I can probably handle emotions better than the others." She thought to herself while setting out ingredients. ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Just about time to add the new ingredients.. still no effects." Delana picked up her paper again, double-checking that she indeed had a 3. Yeah, it was right, she was not mistaken. Carefully, she organized all her ingredients by what emotional effects they had. She had one for everything. Whatever she encountered, she could deal with. Having everything set out, she still felt fine.... She sat waiting for a few more minutes. "... Maybe I should ask the Professor?" she began to worry, "I'd sooner eat toads than be killed while trying to make a simple antidote! And on my first day of potions no less!... but then again, I wasn't feeling all that joyful to begin with... so maybe my poison made me happy? That way I wouldn't feel anything... right??"... She tried to convice herself, tried to make sense of this. "Maybe I didn't touch the paper enough...?
"Professor? She called, raising her hand, "Professor can you help me? I think something is wrong..."
She smiled seeing him back in his seat. Patting his hand in comfort she looked back to her arm. "You know, I may look harmless, but I can pack a punch and am full of surprises." She wasn't really all that threatening but looks could always be deceiving and all. "My symoptoms...well, my skin is itching and it's starting to turn colors."Why am I sweating now? Looking down at her text, she frowned again. "And I'm feeling like I'm having heat flashes and cold spells. I'm all hot and cold."
Carter muttered a "Hi" when a girl introduced herself. He started breathing hard and gave a crazed laugh. He then looked down at his book. "Ohh... itching... let's see... bubotuber cures acne... is it a rash you have?" Carter jumped full circle randomly. "STOP FOLLOWING ME!" he bellowed randomly. "Murtlap Essence soothes skin too." he said jumping right back into the conversation.
Becca kept working through the confusion and, well..... scales. She became more confused with each step she took. For a minute, she even forgot what the task at hand was!! Becca was many things and disoriented wasn't one of them. She figured she could add the ingredients from Boil-Cure potion to see if they would take the scales away, if only she could remember what they were.....Oh! She had it-dried nettles, crushed snake fangs, stewed horned slugs, porcupine quills, and ..... Flobberworm plegm.... or spit.... or mucus? Yes! It was mucus!! So she gathered up the materials, created the potion and added it to the Quintessence. She quickly stirred it together and then tried to think of more things to add as she became increasingly depressed. A scowl was on her face for no reason whatsoever. She wasn't even aware that she was scowling until she had looked down and seen her reflection in the ladle! Another symptom!! Quickly, Becca wrote down all of the symptoms and possible potions that could be used to cure it;
Becca quickly got up, stumbling over her own feet t one point and grabbed all of the ingredients involved in the aformentioned Potions/Elixire. She quickly set of to the task at hand and soon, a very brownish liquid was bubbling inside her cauldron. Now she had to let it sit for about fifteen minutes and she'd take it and be fine(hopefully, or not).
Destiny reached over the table to grab Evelyn's knife that she was practically leaning on. 'Right, I'm just going to move this, before you hurt yourself. I think maybe you should use armadillo bile. Its supposed to sharpen your wit.' She really needed that like now.
Nodding her head, almost proudly, when she heard Destiny saw what happened *giggle*, she stared at the knife that was now further away from her before processing what Destiny said about armadillo bile. "Armadillo...what? Ewwww." she said in disgust, before sitting quietly, thinking quite hard. 'Why do I need that? Do I even have that?'
Picking up her bag, she started to take everything out, trying to find the 'armadillo bile' that Destiny was talking about. Throwing stuff on the table, not caring where it landed or...what...it landed on, she finally just flipped it upside down and emptied the entire bag on the desk. Parchments and books fell everywhere, including quills, ink, and other random things that she thought was necessary to keep around just in case.
Moving all the stuff around, spreading everything across the desk, knocking things over in the process, she didn't spot what the girl said to use. "Nope, i don't have it." Evelyn said quite happily before picking everything up and quickly stuffing it back into her bag. Finally picking up her book, she stared sadly at the burnt spot in the corner before flipping it open again, reading through the material. "Hmm..." Glancing at her half made potion, she saw that it was boiling finally. 'Now what? I have to make it simmer...How do I make the flame go down?'
Blinking a few times, she suddenly blew on the flame under the cauldron, making a few of the flames roll out onto the desk. Oh, well now desk on fire! Laughing a little, Evelyn stood up and walked around to the front of the desk, making sure to hold onto the side so she didn't randomly levitate up to the ceiling, and started to smack the table where the fire was, hoping to make it go out. "Stupid...fire...OW!" She left her hand in the flames for too long and burnt herself, buuuut the fire did go out eventually. Her hand was surely going to blister now...But on the other hand, the fire heating the cauldron was now smaller so the potion wasn't boiling anymore. Hurray!
Celandine was supposed to be doing something. Something other than playing with a strand of her hair and staring vapidly at the board. She blinked some more and looked down at the textbook in front of her. She liked books for some reason she couldn't think of right then. This book was different, she knew that much. It had stuff written in it.
She looked at the hard word on the board again and opened the book. She could find the hard word! She could!
There were notes scribbled throughout the book and Cela's eyes widened. Those were harder words! But she had to read the book to figure out stuff. Antidote. Quint-ess-ence?
Why was this hard? Even though she normally wasn't a hot shot at potions, Cela certainly never had any trouble reading and comprehending things. Was this what it was like to be...
*gasp*
... average?!
O_o
Mina's eyes got really big hearing that crazy laugh. Looking down at her wrist and arm again, she shook her head. "No rash at the moment." Between flipping through her text and getting the quintessence ready, she looked around again. Patting Carter's hand again she smiled softly. "Peppermint has a calming effect and maybe moonstone for balance." This was going to be a challenge after all, her arm was starting to tickle and itch more and more. Plus her wrist was starting to turn a light bluish hue. Writing down all his suggestion and hers she continued to look for more possible ingredients. "Oh and maybe Jobberknoll feathers to help with clarity."
He chopped them up sufficiently and then guessed correctly at the measurement with his scales. And then added them to the concoction. "Next twelve sprigs fluxweed." he then found those and crushed them up.
He looked at the girl next to him, "Hey Cela! Im doing great at this smart bubbling stuff! What do I do next?" he laughed and snorted. He then moved his things over to her table. His potion was now boiling.
Celandine stared. She just stared.
Something deep in her brain, a part of it that hadn't yet been effected by the potion, sort of clicked. It totally, like, wasn't normal and stuff for Chris to be all, like... and stuff. Or her.
She eyed him for a moment more then grinned vapidly.
"We're making stuff. Smart juice for us. I feel not smart. I don't like it. I think that is what the thingy with the thing was. Making me not smart. I have a book!" Celandine held the book up.
"I'm going to look in the book." She announced solemnly.
