As you enter the dank, dark cave of a potions classroom, the first thing you might notice is the smell. A thousand different scents, good and bad, mingle together in the moist, rich air of the musty dungeon room. The room is gloomy: the lighting is dim, mostly from wall sconces where candles flicker but also from small flames under a series of cauldrons which are simmering at the back of the room. There are rows of workstations with two stools at each station.

A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.

At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:

Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. First years, please ask an older student for assistance.

You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.

Class Synopsis:

The professor has entered the room. A brief discussion about the Cardinal Rule of Potions (Know thy Ingredients) has taken place.

A Worksheet has been distributed; students have been instructed to write equal and opposite ingredient pairs on this worksheet to familiarize themselves with complementary ingredients to understand the concept of negators, or neutralizing ingredients.

A brief discussion about Golpalott's FIRST law was introduced: for every ingredient, there is at least one equal and opposite ingredient that can be used as an antidote to the first ingredient.

This led to a discussion on Golpalott's Third Rule: the antidote for a blended poison will be equal to more than the sum of the antidotes for each of the separate components.

The class was informed that they have all been poisoned by means of a potion that absorbs through skin contact. Their goal? To identify their symptoms and brew the antidote to their poison by the end of class. Instructions can be found here.

Okay, she still had some work to do.

Turning to see if Carter was still okay and not hiding again, she started to chop up the innards before moving to crushing the fluxweed.

"That... ughhh... sounds good. Thanks. What do you have left to do? Maybe we can split the work and get these things made faster..." Carter said not pleased with the buzzing that was now ringing in his ears. "Oh, make it stop." he said clasping his head between his hands and shaking his head.

Bring all ingredients to a brisk boil; lower to a simmer.
Slowly add the mystery ingredients that will resolve the poison you have ingested.
Return to a boil until mixture becomes thick and syrupy.
Lower temperature and allow to simmer.

Check your parchment using sperevelio to see if you created the correct antidote based upon your symptoms.

GOOD LUCK! If you run into trouble, raise your hand.

Copernicus stared in confusion at the cauldron in front of him. There was water boiling in there! Were they making spaghetti? What was the boiling water for?

He stared at the people around him, all busy with some unknown project, but it still wasn't clear what exactly he was supposed to do. Cope sighed just when he found a piece of parchment on the desk. Poison? Antidote? If that wasn't his handwriting, Copernicus would be absolutely sure someone was playing a prank on him. As it stood, he had to believe he was either losing his mind or his memory. He jotted the idea down in the parchment to help him remember should this happen again.

While he was still cognizant, Copernicus added the doxy eggs and toad innards to the boiling water. The fluxweed still required crushing, and he dropped the plants into his mortar to be crushed by the pestle.

Ooooh, hey. What were they making today? Spaghetti?

"You did? When?" Evelyn asked, staring curiously at Destiny's eye. Shrugging, she nodded happily when Destiny said she was happy. "Yup, I'm happy." Giggling and humming again, forgetting all about Josh and his words for now, she started to flip through the book again, seeing if there was anything else that could help her.

Glancing over at the jar of...weird looking stuff for burns, Evelyn grimaced and looked towards Destiny again. "But the last time I used stuff for my burnt hands, it turned into a disaster!" She still remembered trying to pick off the green play-doh stuff off the bed sheets in the Hospital wing, and then Jake, and than the Ravenclaw girl that she couldn't remember the name of at the moment, and than Professor Whatsherface that she is ALWAYS forgetting the name to....

Sighing, she scooted the jar over to Destiny for no reason at all. Maybe just to watch it move across the table, Evelyn had no clue, but she blinked at the other girl and just stared as if she was supposed to know what to do with it.

But I think we might need just a little more horned toad innards chopped," she answered. They did need to get started on these antidotes and fast, Carter wasn't looking too happy and she herself was starting to resemble a smurf and those hot and cold flashes and sweats were getting more intense. I will not cry

Finishing up the crushing and splitting up the fluxweed for each cauldron, she looked back to Carter. "Okay, so what other ingredients do we need again?"

'Okay, don't use that for your hand. But I hope it don't fall off.' It wouldn't fall off but maybe if Destiny scared Evelyn, she would use it. It was worth a try.

Destiny started to add the snake fangs when she spotted the jar inching closer and closer to her. She stopped and just stared at Evelyn. And then she started to laugh. 'Why are you giving this to me? You are the one with the burned hand!'

Finally able to add the snake fangs, Destiny noticed Evelyn didn't add her 'secret ingredient.' 'Sooo, are you going to add that runespoor egg or what?' So we can have the normal Evelyn back.

"I think we should try Jobberknoll for you and moonstone for me" kay said to Marie. "Think Marie! What do you think?"

My parchment was a 3, but.. I haven't felt any emotional effects... Or any effects at all for that matter. I was feeling rather depressed earlier but I managed to get my mind off of it by classtime. I thought perhaps my potion was a sort of euphoria potion and so the two emotions canceled each other out... But I'm not sure. Is that even possible? Delana wondered, just finishing up with her potion and looking up to the professor. Maybe she was wrong about this, but just in case she was right, she'd have the counter-potion done and ready.

Carter quickly chopped the toad innards. Oh, he was feeling much worse. They were getting closer. It was like he could feel them breathing on the back of his neck. He spun around. "GET. AWAY. FROM. ME." he said through a clenched mouth with eyes glaring. He then looked up at the ingredients.

2 ounces horned toad innards, chopped
12 sprigs fluxweed, crushed to a fine powder

Mina already had her water and doxy eggs ready, he just finished the horned toad innards, and she prepared the fluxweed. "We are set, except for the 'mystery' ingredient." he said dumping all his ingredients so far into his cauldron. He began to heat it. "We are supposed to let it boil. So we'll have a few minutes to get the other things ready. What ingredient are you going to try?"

Kay said to Marie pointing to all their things. Kay was trying to be level head at the same time she was crying and having a hard time staying calm. "Please you have to try this and I'm going to try the moonstone with my potion." Kay said to her. At this time of the class Kay didn't know if she was right or not. Kay was starting to lose it, and Marie was gone around the twist.

Evelyn stared in horror when Destiny mentioned her hand falling off. "It...wouldn't...dare." she spoke quietly, holding up her burned hand and glaring at it before giggling continuously. Bringing the jar closer to her, she was just about to open it when she noticed she would have to let go of the table. "Umm, can you open this please?" she asked Destiny, scooting the jar back over to her.

Ignoring the runespoor egg question, she looked even further in the book for any more information. 'Okay, i have the confusion one...ingredient...thing...down, now for insane happiness and levitation!' Evelyn laughed again, unable to hold it in and then suddenly gasping, an idea occurring to her. "DESTINY!" she yelled before she could stop herself, looking around and hoping no one would take notice. "Destiny." she whispered more quietly this time, finally plopping the runespoor egg into the potion, making it slosh dangerously around, almost making some of it spill out. "Glumbumblebumbum *Giggle*...stuff...that stuff, makes people sad. Would that work?"

'Okay I'll open it.' Destiny picked the jar up from the table and tried to open it, but the feathers on her hands were making it difficult. She placed the jar back on the table and wiped her hands on her skirt. She picked the jar back up and tried again, but it was useless. Getting angry with the jar she banged it on the edge of the table and the top broke. 'There it is open now.' she said and scooted the jar back to Evelyn.

Destiny picked up a leech, gross!, and started to squeeze the juice out of it. There, her potion was almost finished! She turned to Evelyn when she yelled 'Now I'm deaf..' and plopped her runespoor egg in her potion, which luckily did not come out of the couldren. 'Glumbumble, to make you sad? No way I don't think so. I think you should use a moonstone. Its supposed to gain emotional balance.' Because Destiny did not want Evelyn to start crying.

"Just start with one for now." Kay said looking at the potions. "You still have ot wait just a few more minutes. Its not not boiled long enough yet." Kay said to Marie.

Placing all her ingredients in her cauldron, Mina looked down at her parchment and then back up at Carter. "I was thinking maybe it's more than one mystery ingredient. We have multiple symptoms and all," she replied as she leaned over her cauldron. It was starting to boil and she was quite happy she had lit both their cauldron earlier so that they would be hot and ready for their quintessence. "Ashwinder eggs would help with my heat flashes and cold sweats, bubotuber will help the itching, but some Abyssinian shrivelfig would stop the swelling. I don't know." She was starting to get worst. "I feel like I'm on fire now and I'm so blue," she cried. "We really need to figure this out."

So much for not crying

Very content with himself he sat back again and crushed more and more fluxweed. Nooo. No way he was telling these to her beloved Rose. Now she'd come and kill him if he was lucky enough.

She allowed it boil up to a thick consistency before turning it down to simmer.

Was Tori crying? Why? Did he yell at her? That was not his intention. He started to feel, suddenly, deeply sorry about everything he did, being affected by the Gryffindor girl crying his eyes got wet too. ''I'm soorry! Let's get doing this. We'll be okay...i hope''. He quickly added horned toad innards stirred the cauldron and added all the fluxweed powder he had been crushing. ''Good now it is time for my mystrey ingredient. Number 3 was emotional right?'' he adressed to Tori ''Soooo...'' he looked on the table with many different ingredients his eyes moving from the moonstone to glumbumble ''Which one do you think would go better with me, moonstone or glumbumble?''

Marie put the feather in the boiling potion and stirred slowly. "Now what do we do, wait some more?" Marie was so forgetful by this point she couldn't even remember what that girl had told her to do after putting the feather in. Looking at the girl she said "Hey, what's yuor name, have we met before?"

Kay just looked at Marie and didn't know what to say. "Marie, I just told you. My name is Kay, we are in potions class and we are working on an antidote to stop the poison. We have to wait just a little bit for the potion to cook." Kay said realizing that she wasn't crying anymore. What did that mean? Was it going to make her even more upset? Anxiety. That's what this all was. Her being emotional and unsure of herself. But she hope this would work. Marie was going nutter by the minute and crying sounded good again right now. "It will be ready very soon and then we can do the "SpeRevelio" To see if we are right." Kay said watching Marie closely.

Destiny picked up a leech, gross!, and started to squeeze the juice out of it. There, her potion was almost finished! "I didn't do it!" she cried out, snickering, watching the top part of the jar break off. When the jar was scooted back over to her, she stared inside, grimacing. "It looks disgusting." she said, even though it pretty much just looked like white cream with a little tint of brown.

Sticking a finger in it, she noticed how cold the stuff was, and that it also had the consistency of yogurt. 'Guess it's not that bad.' she thought, giggling again, before spreading the stuff on the burn. "Okay, okay. I'll use moonstone." Evelyn spoke, hearing Destiny repeat that she should use that instead of the Glumbumglumblebumble *Laugh* stuff. "Do you have any?"

Evelyn tried to ignore Josh, but she couldn't help peaking over every once in awhile to see what he was doing, and every time she did that, she would fall into another fit of giggles. 'Dangit, stop giggling!' she yelled at herself, shaking her head but continued to be extremely happy. This class was so not how she thought it was going to be, and it was tearing her slightly apart. She needed to get out of here once everything was done.
