Despite that the Arithmancy Office had been occupied by the same professor for the previous six terms, and that it would once again be occupied by that same woman for yet another, the appearance of the office this term differs strikingly when compared to the previous six. In addition to the large original windows on the right wall of the office, showing the vast Hogwarts Grounds, new enchanted windows have been added to the office's left wall, allowing copious amounts of sunshine to bathe the office and depicting in the distance an Irish castle of great significance to Macadrian Shackleton-Clark.

In addition to new windows, the walls sport a new hue of robin's egg blue and dozens of portraits and photographs in ornate gold frames. The largest of these portraits depicts newly wed Macadrian and her husband, former Hogwarts professor Fabian Clark, in their wedding attire smiling joyously on their happiest of days.

Inside Professor Shackleton-Clark's office is one familiar object - a large, heavy mahogany desk, behind which stands a yellow floral-patterned cushioned armchair. On the desk sit more photos in frames with numerous moving pictures of her loved ones, including her two sisters, both identical to each other and to her; her cousin Max and his growing family; her father walking her down the aisle; and Macadrian and her husband Fabian on their honeymoon in Greece. The desk also sports crystal vases filled with purple roses and orange lilies (Professor Shackleton-Clark's favorites), numerous small white candles in glass votive holders, an ink well and a peacock feather quill, a fresh blank piece of parchment, and plenty of books on the subject of Arithmancy.

The wall behind her desk consists entirely of shelves filled with books, most of which relate to Arithmancy, although there is an entire section for books on other school subjects, particularly Ancient Runes, Divination, and Astronomy, and some books on topics not taught in the school, including healing and medicinal potions to name a few.

By the large non-magical windows, bedecked with beautifully-ornate gold curtains, stands a mahogany coffee-table covered in a number of Wizarding magazines, spanning topics from academic research in Arithmancy to world politics to witch's fashion. Surrounding the table is a squashy chaise lounger and a small, comfortable looking couch, over which is draped several thick quilts. Next to the chaise is a wooden cabinet with wooden doors, containing mugs, glasses, and small plates for entertaining company, such as students or other staff members, as well as an assortment of sugary snacks. In the fireplace across the room is a fresh pot of hot cocoa warming above the fire.

If you wish to feast your eyes on the interior of this professor's very charming office, you must knock (and please do so loudly as Professor Shackleton-Clark tends to hum to herself at a rather high volume) and await her approval for entrance.

Kylie stood outside Professor Shackelton-Clark's office door. She had heard she should knock loudly.. *sigh* another quick meeting to find out when class was..

Kylie knocked three times on the door, each knock louder than the previous.

"Excuse me Professor, I didn't mean to intrude.. I was simply just coming to ask you when you think your next class may be?" She asked. She was too nervous to mention if the Professor knew anything about what happened last year.. a werewolf.. headmistress.. teacher? It was all very confusing. She decided at the moment it may be a better idea to ask the Ancient Runes teacher.

"No worries. That's what I'm here for. I post all my Arithmancy class information, including dates and times on the bulletin board outside my classroom. I suggest looking there for an answer to your question," Professor Shackleton responded. "I do hope to see you in my next lesson. Hufflepuff house could use the points."

Matheu had a question that has been bothering him: What are Master Numbers and Karmic Numbers? And see if he can get a reveiw of reducing first, then adding.
Matheu knocked on the door and waited for the professor to reply.

"Uh, Professor," Matheu said, loud enough for her to hear from inside the closet. "I was reading, and there are somethings that are unclear to me." This was very interesting. He looked at her book collection and artifacts. Nice. Very nice. He mentally gave her kudo points. He continued. "I know we haven't covered them in class, but I just want a brief understanding of them, that would be okay?"

Wanting to go anywhere but this particular office, Jake lingered outside the door of Shacklton's office. He wanted to run. Far away.

But.

But.

BUUUUUUT.

There was the possibility that MacShack had his bag. And if she hadn't looked inside, Jake could breathe a sigh of relief. But still... he lurked outside the office, before just going for it and knocking on the office door five times in quick succession, biting down hard on his lip.

I love to see students with an interest in Arithmancy outside of what is merely taught during the lessons. I'd be happy to help you with some other topics." Macadrian pushed herself to a standing position and adjusted her robes.

She strolled around to her side of the desk, took a seat, and gestured for Matheu to do the same in the chair across from her. "Now, what topics in particular did you want to discuss?"

Feeling very very VERY nervous and jumpy!twitchy, Jake pushed the door open just a small amount. Enough that he could slide his skinny body through. Shutting the door behind him, Jake looked pointedly down at his feet, not saying anything and just waited to hear what MacShack would say.

Man... it was a mess in here.

"I've been reading out of an advance textbook, which goes more indepth of what the actual text has, and there are few things that aren't very clear. Like Karma, Pinnacles, and Challenges. Challenges in particular because I don't know how to calculate them very well. Plus Karma's have master numbers that I don't know how to handle."

I've been getting screwed up on Challenges and I don't know the use of them.

Okay, yeah, none that sounded good. Lines would practically KILL Jake, and the boy made a kind of whiny 'do I have to?' little kid face as he traipsed further into the office, his stomach still doing those uncomfortable little flips.

Not removing his jacket (his robes were somewhat unwearable after he'd used them as a rope, so he wore a muggle jacket over his uniform), Jake sat at the table he was directed to. Very close to her own desk. So... not all that close to the door. Darn.

Before Shackleton said anything more, Jake guickly interjected with a request as he extracted his self-inking quill. "Professor... I need-... I mean... can you please, erm, like, show me what I need to write? Like... at the top of the parchment?"

If it was an odd request, Jake was oblivious. He could just say he might forget it.

"That won't be necessary. You'll be copying directly from a book I have. You're going to be doing some research for me and making notes for my use. So be sure to write legibly and accurately, otherwise you'll be copying it again." Shackleton looked sternly at Jake before turning in her chair to retrieve a book off the shelf, Medical Magical and Muggle Maladies. "First find the chapter on brain tumors and copy down the pertinent information about how that condition would present in a person, as in, what symptoms they would have."

Jake's heart sank.

All the way down to the dungeons.

His face visibly showed the horror that he felt, from having to copy out LEGIBLY and ACCURATELY. Ugh, if only he brought that bunch of quills he had to do his homework with the right spelling and stuff. But no, he'd been hiding them.

"Again?" Jake repeated weakly, having no doubt that he would probably fail in his task. Taking the book from Shackleton, Jake read through the contents page and studied it carefully, looking for the letter that resembled a 'B'. After that, he knew the word 'rain' would come next, but it took him about five minutes or so to locate the appropriate chapter where the information about brain tumors were located.

Propping the book on his lap so it leant against the table, Jake studied the words closely. His best chance was the list of bullet points. He could just copy the words... like a drawing. That might just do it. He got to work, his quill moving painstakingy slowly and the writing large and childish, with backwards letters (from where he recognised words and wrote them himself) and occasional inkblots. As his left hand wrote, Jake's painful right hand kept up under what he was copying, though he way have missed a letter or two.

Professor Shackleton-Clark glanced sideways toward Jake every few minutes or so, observing his behavior and how he was handling the first of very many punishments to come. At his announcement that he was finished with the task, Macadrian glanced over his list. "That is a very good start. Does the book describe the type of behavioral and cognitive problems that you wrote last in that list?" It was the changes in Jake she was concerned about. She didn't want the boy to have a brain tumor, and hoped that she could rule out this condition from the possibilities.

"Yes, ma'am," Matheu said. "The Pinnacles are atributes that coinside with a set number of years in your life. The first Pinnacle develops character, where we develop egos and define our sense of self. It' can also be related to the spring time of our life, like the fist season change. Second Pinnacles are like the summer of our life, and influence our relationships with family members and how we direct responsibility. The third Pinnacle are the "middle ages" of our life, where we mature and is noted as our autumn, the third season change. Our Maturity Number takes more of a role and begin to make sense. The fourth Pinnacle is the like the winter cycle. This is the time in our life where we embrace a deeper fulfillment as we expand our awarenes to include a broader definition of spiritual understanding. This is a very integrative time of life. This Pinnacle wants us to use our knowledge learned from the past three and make some use of it, for we remain in this one the longest, if you die two years in to it.
Challenges are within the Pinnacles. Pinnacles give us a road map, but Challenges do just what their title say: lay out our challenges. There are three types of Challenges: Outstanding, Mixed, and Cipher, which is another word for zero. Outstanding Challenges are run through the nine year cycles; they are also the reoccuring Challenges. Mixed consist of a varity of numbers bringing the development that arises from working with mutliple energies. And Cipher take on properties of the 9, and also introduce the 0 as a number because you subtract Challenges instead of the common addition property. A Cipher Challenge is a time for experiencing all or no challenges. Time charts that include the layout of Pinnacles are also the time charts for Challenges, bringing them more together and balanced."
All that hard reading paid off. Give him an OWL now and he'll be ready to go!

"Ah, sounds like you've been referencing Arithmancy books other than the text? I'm not sure I agree with every detail you've mentioned, but each Arithmancer has their own opinions on the field. Which particular aspect of what you researched do you not understand and would like clarified?"

Macadrian's eyes widened a little as she listened to the fairly precise description of Jake's behavior. Oh no! What if the boy had a brain tumor? She wondered if the Headmaster would allow her to take him to St. Mungo's for a brain scan... She needed to research this first before approaching Bontecou. Distractedly, Professor Shackleton agreed, "Yes, I think this is enough for tonight."

Shackleton tried to focus, "You'll return next week for your next detention. Do try to stay out of trouble in the meantime." She then grabbed his backpack and laid it atop her desk, "As for this, your notes have been gathered from the floor and are in your bag. I was most disturbed to see your sketch upon your notes from my lesson. They did not appear friendly, to say the very least. While I have a good idea what they are meant to represent, I'm not even going to further address it because I am more concerned by the book in your bag. How do you explain this?" She pulled out a large, rather old looking book from his backpack.

She wondered if the Headmaster would allow her to take him to St. Mungo's for a brain scan... She needed to research this first before approaching Bontecou. Distractedly, Professor Shackleton agreed, "Yes, I think this is enough for tonight."

Shackleton tried to focus, "You'll return next week for your next detention. Do try to stay out of trouble in the meantime." She then grabbed his backpack and laid it atop her desk, "As for this, your notes have been gathered from the floor and are in your bag. I was most disturbed to see your sketch upon your notes from my lesson. They did not appear friendly, to say the very least. While I have a good idea what they are meant to represent, I'm not even going to further address it because I am more concerned by the book in your bag. How do you explain this?" She pulled out a large, rather old looking book from his backpack.

Smiling just a little when Shackleton said he was free to go, Jake relaxed in his seat, massaging the side of his head. Then she mentioned a sketch on his notes, and Jake frowned in confusion. What sketch.

Before he could say anything about that, Jake could only stare as Shackleton pulled the book from his bag. Without answering the question, he leant forwards and tried to grab at the book, a stormy expression on his face. "That's... You went through my bag!"

Oh dear... Had she found any of the other stuff?

Eeeee.

Professor Shackleton's voice was icy, "I did not rifle through your belongings. Your backpack was open when it was handed to me by another student and this book was in plain sight. Now, what are you doing with this?" Had the Jake she once knew possessed this book, she might think he was just curious, but with this odd new Jake, she was much more concerned. Maybe his behavior didn't have to do with a brain tumor at all... maybe he simply is attracted to that world. Macadrian shuddered at the thought.

Matheu took out his unabridged text and showed it to the professor. "It's Arithmancy, the Unabridged Study. I bought a standard text and an advance text for all of my classes. May we start a little small, like Master Numbers, then Karma, then Challenges? I understand Pinnacles well; I just don't understand some finer details." This would be a good thing. And he also liked to get to know how his teahers taught and worked.

Hearing the tone of Shackleton's voice, Jake shrank back in his chair. "I... it looked neat..." he said, looking worried. "I just wuh-wanted ter read it... I juh-just like rrrreadin'..."

He looked at Shackleton straight in the eye, knowing that people always thought he was lying when he didn't. Which was alot. In actual fact, Jake didn't often lie. "Please... I were just... ruh-readin'..."
