Despite that the Arithmancy Office had been occupied by the same professor for the previous six terms, and that it would once again be occupied by that same woman for yet another, the appearance of the office this term differs strikingly when compared to the previous six. In addition to the large original windows on the right wall of the office, showing the vast Hogwarts Grounds, new enchanted windows have been added to the office's left wall, allowing copious amounts of sunshine to bathe the office and depicting in the distance an Irish castle of great significance to Macadrian Shackleton-Clark.

In addition to new windows, the walls sport a new hue of robin's egg blue and dozens of portraits and photographs in ornate gold frames. The largest of these portraits depicts newly wed Macadrian and her husband, former Hogwarts professor Fabian Clark, in their wedding attire smiling joyously on their happiest of days.

Inside Professor Shackleton-Clark's office is one familiar object - a large, heavy mahogany desk, behind which stands a yellow floral-patterned cushioned armchair. On the desk sit more photos in frames with numerous moving pictures of her loved ones, including her two sisters, both identical to each other and to her; her cousin Max and his growing family; her father walking her down the aisle; and Macadrian and her husband Fabian on their honeymoon in Greece. The desk also sports crystal vases filled with purple roses and orange lilies (Professor Shackleton-Clark's favorites), numerous small white candles in glass votive holders, an ink well and a peacock feather quill, a fresh blank piece of parchment, and plenty of books on the subject of Arithmancy.

The wall behind her desk consists entirely of shelves filled with books, most of which relate to Arithmancy, although there is an entire section for books on other school subjects, particularly Ancient Runes, Divination, and Astronomy, and some books on topics not taught in the school, including healing and medicinal potions to name a few.

By the large non-magical windows, bedecked with beautifully-ornate gold curtains, stands a mahogany coffee-table covered in a number of Wizarding magazines, spanning topics from academic research in Arithmancy to world politics to witch's fashion. Surrounding the table is a squashy chaise lounger and a small, comfortable looking couch, over which is draped several thick quilts. Next to the chaise is a wooden cabinet with wooden doors, containing mugs, glasses, and small plates for entertaining company, such as students or other staff members, as well as an assortment of sugary snacks. In the fireplace across the room is a fresh pot of hot cocoa warming above the fire.

If you wish to feast your eyes on the interior of this professor's very charming office, you must knock (and please do so loudly as Professor Shackleton-Clark tends to hum to herself at a rather high volume) and await her approval for entrance.

Professor Shackleton was surprised to see another new face in her office. "I can certainly help you, dear. Why don't you have a seat and let me draw you up a parchment for us to work on." Macadrian reached into the top drawer of her desk and pulled out a piece of scrap parchment. She wrote:

She handed the parchement to the girl and explained, "Each letter has a number equivalent, which you had already found. When calculating the Transits, each letter in the first name also represents a Physical Transit that last the same number of years as the letter/number conversion shows. So the 'K' Physical Transit lasted for two years, because K is equal to 2. The first letter of your name starts from birth and then you count the years up based on the number equivalents as you read the letters across. Do you follow so far?"[/QUOTE]

Jake started, wondering if MacShack had taken that in. "See... my attention span is way worse than usual... and I'm worried that I'll get into more trouble with certain professors. See, I've already had a kind of bad start to the year, and I don't think I'll be able to focus very well... just bringing that to your attention, too."

Jake bit his lip and shuffled his feet. Did that sound like he was whining? 'Cause if you asked him it sounded like he was whining.

He knew that this wasn't going to be easy and he just knew she was going to enquire further into his reasons behind his choice. He wished he had come more prepared now, not realising that he was going to have to improvise answers.

"I want to be a journalist," he picked from thin air as it seemed appropriate at that moment in time and it didn't seem like it needed Runes at all, not to his thirteen year old mind. Not unless, of course, he was working for Runes Weekly. Then, he would have problems.

And now he was even offending Professor Shackleton - this was not going well at all. "I'm sorry, I meant nothing by it. I just don't want to take the subject anymore. I don't really have an interest, I don't do very well in the class and I would rather focus on my other studies."

He hoped and prayed that this would be sufficient enough. Afterall, Varius wasn't a very good liar and he wasn't sure how much more of these faux answers he could conjure.

Where do I find the numbers for the name thing and i don't get how to determine what physical transit age I will be at age 17.

Once he had completed his diatribe about cats and squibs, Professor Shackleton inquired, "She thinks you stole her cat? You didn't, right?" Macadrian didn't think Jake would ever do that, but she had to ask. You know, just in case. "What is it that she won't let you explain to her? Perhaps I could mediate on your behalf? After all, Professor Bunbury and I do work together on the Quill." Professor Shackleton-Clark offered her services genuinely to help Jake; finding out the gossip was an added bonus.

"And as for her comments about you being a failure at magic and a squib, I would say that is poppycock! You have given me no indication that you are anything less than capable. The key with you is focus and giving it your very best effort. Which brings us to your second point... I did notice that you were a bit distracted in class today. Any idea why you're having trouble focusing? Might it be this disagreement with Professor Bunbury and her comments that have gotten you distracted? Or is there something else going on?" Professor Shackleton tried to survey his facial expression as she asked these questions, anything to find out the truth so that she could help him. The truth is always in the eyes.

Something just didn't feel right here. Macadrian's brow furrowed in thought. She wondered how much of this had to do with the subject of Runes and how much had to do with the fact that the subject was now widely known to be taught by a werewolf.

"Varius, I very rarely allow a student to drop a subject before their fifth year. I don't like limiting a student's career options before they've had a chance to really explore what they like and what they're good at. And two years of education is hardly enough time to really determine that."

She wasn't sure she wanted to go there, but she needed to exclude the werewolf issue as a factor before making a decision. "Varius, I'd like you to be extremely honest with me when I ask you this next question. I will not judge you either way... How much of your desire to discontinue Ancient Runes is because you now know Professor Lupa is a werewolf?"

Professor Shackleton explained, "You can find the chart converting each letter to a number in Chapter Two of the textbook. And what don't you understand about determining the physical transit age?"

Forgetting... neglecting... arguing with the fact that it should even be a title... All the same thing.

Then, Jake's face screwed up into an awkward expression. "Technically no," he said, hurrying through the word 'technically'. "See, the cat followed me. I like Gingersnapple... I really do. We went for a walk, and it's not like she didn't get the cat back..." Give or take a few fur changes. "And, well, she won't let me explain that I only turned her cat pink... because I thought she liked the colour. I mean, you have to agree she kinda puts that impression out, right? And that if I knew how to turn him back, I really would... maybe try to give her some advice," Maybe. Sorta.

No... no he really wouldn't now. Unless she, you know, threatened him or something. Which he didn't put past her.

At the next round of speech, Jake nodded his general agreement, looking towards the window slightly before thinking about anything. He didn't think the Bunbury thing was it... he'd dealt with some of that last year just fine. "Well..." he paused for a moment and looked back at MacShack. "A few things... well, a lot of things changed this summer. I'm living with a new foster mother now, and alot of my summer was constantly different. Added to that, when I got back here, Kazi told me because I skipped his detentions and claasss.... IIIII mean, forgot about them, that I have to do double the amount I had last term. And then he was all 'Would you like to make it sixteeeeen saturday detentions?' so I've kind of been dwelling on that," Jake took a breath and bit his lip as he looked straight into Mac's eye. "I wanna do gooder this year... I really don't wanna be like I was last year... that's all I think about now. It's soooo... distracting. And hard, at that."

Varius knew the moment that Professor Shackleton suspected that his reluctance to carry on Runes because Lupa was a werewolf. She was thinking! He could tell! And anyone knows that when a lady such as Shackleton THINKS it means they are solving a puzzle right before their very eyes and and - SHE DOES NUMBERS! The biggest problems exist in numbers! She so knew. She sooooooooooo knew. He was panicking and his palms were getting all sweaty, he could feel the colour drain from his face as he watched her; WAITING for her to call him out on it.

Oh wait... she was going on about how she doesn't normally allow this kind of thing. Maybe she was just pondering whether or not she should let him quit the subject? Maybe she was going to? He always knew he liked Shackleton. She was always so good with things like this.

Or not.

Yep, his previous suspicions were right! She knew! This was bad, very bad, but how could he possibly recover from this with another lie AND still get taken out of Runes? He had to admit it.

"I can't say the desire is entirely mine, Professor," he didn't dare mention the reasons behind said desire out loud, not like she had, "It is my mother. She is very concerned with this whole... situation, and she does not want me in those classes. Nor do I really... not after that assembly. She owled me the other day too! Some Daily Prophet reporter had been interviewing her and let slip that the cage could have been tampered with! So we have two werewolves and a saboteur in the school... I... I would really just like to remove myself from Runes classes."

"Let me get this straight. You turned her cat... pink?! Like the color of your hair pink? Without her permission?" Professor Shackleton's eyes grew wider. Bunbury's anger hovered dangerously close to the surface on her best of days! Dying her cat pink sounded like just the thing to set her over the edge... "Mr. Upstead, though your intentions seemed to have been genuine, in that you thought she'd appreciate your cat makeover, you didn't ask her permission and that is probably what angered her most. With that said, her holding a grudge for a mistake this long is a bit unnecessary, especially considering the cat seems to be in complete health, despite its fur color. Perhaps I could talk to her and try to clear the air. Would that be alright with you?"

Hmm. That was going to be an interesting conversation. Conversing with Anastasia was like walking across hot coals - if you make it quick and efficient, you hardly notice the pain. Linger for too long... OUCH!

Foster parents? How didn't Macadrian already know this? She inquired gently, "And how is your new home? Do you like it well enough?" Macadrian wasn't familiar with what the foster system was like, but she hoped he was in a loving home. If not, well, her and Fabian's home was rather large... Although that might not be considered appropriate.

"As for Professor Kazimeriz, why did you miss his detentions in the first place? Actually, let me back up - what were the detentions for to begin with?"

"Ah, I see." Macadrian only had so much say before the parents' wishes took precedence. But Mac sincerely disagreed with this decision... "I understand your mother's concern, and yours, too. However, unless you plan to leave the school, I don't see why removing yourself from Ancient Runes will make you any safer. Professor Lupa never plans lessons near the full moon, nor would she ever again put anyone in danger like last term. Being in her classroom when she's in her human form is no more dangerous than if she wasn't a werewolf at all. Not to mention, that she is allowed outside of her office and classroom at any time, so not taking her class doesn't increase your safety, unless you plan to leave the castle and grounds.

"With that said, if you and your mother wish you to drop Ancient Runes, I will not stand in your way. But I'd like for you to think about what we've discussed before you make your decision. Think long and hard."

Angel entered the office and stood quiet for a moment before finally finding her voice "Good day Professor, I hope you do not mind but i was wondering if i could ask you about my homework results. I am fine with the fact that i only got 11 out of 15 as i did find i a little hard to get my head around it i was just wondering where i went wrong so i can re read the text again with more understanding before next lesson"

At least she was being true to her word and not judging him or his mother, and he appreciated this factor. It was at that moment in time that he was just thankful he wasn't a Slytherin. He couldn't possibly imagine having to go to Lupa as his head of house to inform her he didn't want to take her classes any longer.

When she argued that he would be no safer unless he actually left the school, he silently thought that psychologically he would and the less interaction the better, but he thought he best not chance his luck.

"Thank you for your time Professor and I will think over it, but I don't think my Mothers or my decision will change anytime in the near future."

He gave her a weak smile, hoping he hadn't disappointed her too much as his Head of House for deciding to go ahead with this for these particular reasons. But what more was he to do? Allow himself as easy bait in Lupa's lessons? He didn't think so! Giving a quick, "Goodbye Professor," he freed the seat he was sat on for another student and left the office without another word.

"Errrr... yes?" Jake responded, keeping his expression as innocent as possible. Really, what was permission these days? Kazi didn't need permission to stick him to that gosh darn chair. "I... would like if you could do that, Professor," he nodded hurriedly, hair flying every which-way.

New home. Hmmm. "Erm... well, it's okay I think. I mean, my foster mother seems to think I'm old enough to do stuff on my own, but she's dead nice," he nodded, smiling greatly. "I just need to get used to it, I think," Jake added, digging one toe into the floor.

"The detentions were forrrrrrr..." Jake paused, thinking for a moment. What had he done last year? "Erm... a few things. One particular thing I remember him saying was 'your deplorable behaviour at the feast'," he explained, deepening his voice a little to resemble Kazi's. "Oh yeaaaahhhh... I threw a total tantrum at the feast and stuff. But... you, like, don't have to take points and stuff. That was last term. And he's taking care of it. With the detentions. That I didn't... go... to..."

Erm... yeah.

"But, I don't suppose I'll even have a chance to skive them this year," he muttered, making a face. "Kaz has eyes in the walls. I mean, Kazi. No! Kazimeriz! Yeah, thass it."

Macadrian watched Varius leave her office, frown lines settling upon her face. So this is what it was going to be like from now on? Would the education of these students suffer because of Alessia's presence? Kids not learning an important subject out of fear? Not that it was Lupa's fault in the least, but how to reconcile this issue was beyond Macadrian at this point.

Jake seemed okay with his foster home situation and Macadrian couldn't sense that there was any cause for concern, so she was sufficiently appeased by his response on that matter.

In the matter of Kazimeriz, well, that was another story altogether. She couldn't help but smirk a bit as Jake hurried to avoid getting house points taken off for last year's rule breaking. But she removed that smirk from her face as quickly as it appeared, "You said the detentions were for a few things? And you knowingly missed some detentions last term? Well, I'm sorry Mr. Upstead, but I can't really help you out of that one. I think those Saturday detentions might be something you're just going to have to suffer. Perhaps if you make a truly earnest effort to show him you've learned from your mistakes, he'll drop a few detentions off the end..." Although, Kazimeriz could be one tough cookie, so that might not work. Maybe though?

Nodding his head, Jake said nothing in response but hoped his lack of protest would suffice. He wasn't looking forward to Bunbury perhaps telling MacShack that the cat Pinkification wasn't... exactly a gesture of good will. More of revenge.

Well... maybe she wouldn't mention it.

"Bleh," Jake pulled a face as she addressed him the way he hated. "Can ya call me Jake?" he asked hopefully, tugging on the hem of his shirt. As MacShack went on Jake pulled a different face, almost going as far as sticking his tongue out in disgust. "Learnt from my mistakes," he repeated, looking blank for a moment. "Yeah," he stared down at his feet for a moment and stood in silence, any traces of bounciness in him long gone.

I mean, I was a cursebreaker with Gringotts for years and I've solved more puzzles than I can care to remember. Not to mention growing up I had a sister who liked to experiment with hair potions and I spent many nights fixing her mistakes. Honestly, whoever told her lime green would be a good color with her complexion was an idiot. But anyway, I may be able to help if you're interested?"

Well, Dale won't know... he's only... I think seven," Jake mumbled, not surprised that he couldn't remember Dale's age. "It was an accident. Anddddd... well, Ryan, my stepbrother... he is a squib. He just used a potion that was already hanging around. Some brown thing. He figured the colour would turn my hair to a normal colour."

Jake paused here, looking up.

"It didn't."

Shifting forwards on his chair, Jake watched MacShack. "I can talk to my sister... she's a sixth year. Maybe she can write home... she lives there still," he added, feeling that he was outstaying his welcome.
