The large wooden door to the Arithmancy classroom is held open by magic, allowing you to see the numerous desks arranged in rows within. Golden numbers float about the room, encircling the brazieres illuminating the classroom and bouncing lazily off the desktops. On each desk is a fresh, leather-bound journal full of blank parchment and a blank piece of cardstock, thicker than the standard parchment, which is folded in half lengthwise and standing upon the desk upright.

Professor Shackleton-Clark stands along the right side wall of the room, glancing out the windows onto the Grounds below. As you enter, she turns and offers a welcoming smile. This is going to be a great year!

Kiri's finger slid down the list of Transit Cycles. Let's see... R... R... Arrrrr... The digit came to rest.

Kiri read. She read it a second time, absent-mindedly scratching her head with her quill. What in the name of Bletchley Park did this mean?

She resolved to taking it line by line. That turned out to be a mistake - Kiri certainly did not feel she possessed a lot of understanding and insight right now. She shrugged and doodled a question mark next to it.
Next. Well, she was certainly dealing with power and authority. She was at school! Not a lot of money seemed to be involved, however. As for elevating her financial status... Kiri had a fleeting vision of herself running an underground betting ring on the outcome of the Gobstones championship. She giggled.

The last bit of her Transit sounded most ominous, however. After what had happened last term and at the Leaky Cauldron just a few weeks ago, it sounded uncannily fitting, but a part of Kiri's brain was screaming Postdiction! Postdiction!
"Be aware of your surroundings," Kiri mumbled. She glanced around to see if there was anyone staring at her or giving her shifty looks.

First, though, someone was going to be in trouble. She was very much hoping that the two students just called to the front by the professor were not sharing her Transit.

Sarah pulled the piece of parchment back towards her and blinked at it a few times.Why oh why did this lesson have to be so hard? With a loud THUMP she turned the pages of the textbook back to the penultimate chapter and read the meaning of the letter H, writing it down on her paper afterwards.

She had no idea how any of that corresponded to her life.She hadn't won any money, or lost any as far as she knew.Admittedly self doubt and skepticism were traits that she had in abundance, but that had always been the case not just since the age of 12.Sighing, Sarah sat looking at the words trying really hard to come up with something....anything.

Deciding that the best thing to do was ask, Sarah stuck her hand in the air and spoke. "Professor Shackleton...uh -Clark?" Yeah she really needed to get used to the new double barrel thing. "I'm having a hard time deciphering mine.I don't think any of it really corresponds to just the last two years." Biting her lip she put her hand back down and waited to be made to feel like an idiot.

OH! There was the self-doubt thing!

Professor Shackleton-Clark only commented on the parchments with some errors and left those with completely correct parchments to work in peace. Even the errors made by the students were minor, and considering this was a difficult topic in Arithmancy, Macadrian was rather proud of her students.

"I think now is a good time to begin the assessment of our current Physical Transits. There may also be a real breakthrough in your awareness and perspective of life."

Professor Shackleton-Clark paused before explaining how this description applied to her current life, "This says I am in a period of change and activity. I just married over the summer and have begun a new life with someone else. That is certainly a very large change to make in one's life. Quite a bit of travel? Well, our wedding was held in Ireland where my family resides and then we traveled for our honeymoon to Greece. Not to mention, I'll likely be returning to our home in the country fairly frequently on my days off, so that is even more travel.

"Do you see how I'm dissecting the textbook's description? I'd like you all to do the same for your own current Physical Transit. You may begin, and you may choose whether to keep it to yourself or share it with the class."

Okay, yeah... MacShack had made him jump, suddenly talking to him when he was all spaced out and stuff. GUH! She called him 'boy'. Shudder. "Okay, Professor," he nodded, and found a spare space on his parchment, where he wrote down his name.

Rafe banged his head on the table, then lifting it revealing a long red line across his forehead. I'm never going to get this, he thought. He returned to his parchment and book and tried to figure out this physical transit stuff. He also began to doodle some Quidditch stuff all over his parchment.

You have to exercise caution in everything you do and every decision you make. Be aware of your surroundings.

A: You have a mental approach to practical matters. This is a period of change, activity, progress, and creativity. The letter A adds independence and leadership to your personality. There can be quite a bit of travel and possibly a change of residence (Well, I have lived all over Europe!). You can expect promotion and opportunities. There may also be a real breakthrough in your awareness and perspective of life.
F: This is a period of much soul searching and spiritual growth. There will be plenty of hard work and responsibility, both at home and on the job. You will begin to doubt old and established ideas and patterns. During this year you are intuitive and sensitive but less clear about what you want out of this life. You will need to turn inward, contemplate and meditate. You may have a tendency to play the martyr during this time; sacrificing too much. However, this is likely an avoidance of responsibility rather than an act of genuine selfless love. There will be more than enough opportunity to help and give comfort, however, because many people will come to you for guidance and a shoulder to cry on. (Oh goodie...)

Rafe assumed that his Physical change was according to his age, from what he observed with a third year. So, that meant "F", all about meditating and being a shoulder to cry on. Hmm...

"Well duh!" Rafe said kind of loudly. He tried to look around and see what other people where doing. Everyone else seemed so much more confident than he did. This was his first class as a first year and he was completely lost.

He raised his hand again, perhaps the professor didn't hear him the first time. "Professor, I'm still not quite sure if I'm doing this right? Soul searching and spiritual growth? That's a little deep for my taste. I mean I'm only eleven!"

Damon wrote on his parchment noticing the letter for his transit per the textbook:

Damon was pleased with this description but at the same time he was concerned. The good was that Damon would have plenty of chances to study as much as possible and get things done. He would also be doing things that would involve whatever leadership roles he could get himself into. The bad about this was the fact that if something bad were to go wrong Damon might end up as an emotional wreck and he did not want that to happen. There were also chances that he would have worrisome times on his hands.

Professor Shackleton bent at the waist from her full height of 5'9" to bring her face level with those of the two Ravenclaws before her. She whispered quietly, "I do not tolerate disrespect in my classroom. I respect you and I deserve the same in return. If you think my class is so terrible and long, you can exit the way you entered. No one is forcing you to be here, so if this class is not enjoyable for you, I will not be offended if you choose not to study this subject. Professor Shackleton removed her wand from her hip holster, pointed it at each student's mouth and cast a charm sticking the upper lip to the lower. "I will remove that at the conclusion of the lesson, after which you will remain to help clean the blackboards and assist me with various other tasks. Unless, of course, you'd prefer a detention in the dungeon?"

Jack determined that his physical transit was currently A and would be switching to C in a few months. For now, that meant to him, progress and change. Soon he would be more creative. Maybe that meant that he would be getting a band together soon. That would be nice. An increase in social events was coming, too.

Fortunately, Tavelon was already looking at that, so he flipped back to the appropriate page and read the description for E-

Perhaps Arithmancy wasn't all that far off, it was certainly true that he was traveling, having just changed his residence to Hogwarts. But these thoughts were quickly rebuffed when he continued reading:

james went to his chair in the cconer, he did'nt understand why miss would let him tell her that this was said when they were just siting there doing nothing, and that he really did like her lesson

'Guess i did it right.' Evelyn thought when the professor didn't say anything about her paper. 'Now to interpret my current physical transit? Easy enough.' Looking at the book and finding the letter E, Evelyn wrote down the description in the book onto her paper with her normal elegant writing.

E: "You will feel inspired and helpful. There can be change in career, travel, and possibly another residence. You are attracted to new and adventurous experiences, including love affairs. Reading what she wrote down, she began to think of what this meant in her life.
'Love affairs...marriage...' she frowned at the description. 'Well i sorta like Josh, but love affairs and marriage?!' She didn't know how to interpret that part, so she went on to the next sentences. 'Frivolous attitude and philosophical ideas. I guess that's true. I'm more relaxed than i was before and open to new ideas.'

Hearing a disturbance, she looked up to find two students up at the front of the class, arguing over something by the professor. 'Hope neither of those two are Slytherin. Can't afford to lose any more house points.' she thought tensely, and went back to writing.

Virgi walked over to her chair without talking of course. Five points! She felt so bad. She remembered she had looked at James first and he talked, but if she hadn't looked at him he wouldn't have talked. She just sat in silence regretting what she did. Hopefully Professor Shackleton couldn't read minds, just in case she could, she turned her mind to off.

Iris listened to Professor Shackleton tell off the two Ravenclaws as she went to read the R bit of her book. Wow ... I've never heard her that indimidating before ... She didn't even need to shout! Iris looked around to see how everyone else was reacting to the two Ravenclaws' telling off. She smirked as a First year Hufflepuff laughed rather loudly. Shaking her head, she picked up the book and read what it said.

As Iris read through what it was saying, she found herself frowning with confusion at the book ... Nearly none of it stood true to her at the moment, or her in the last couple of years, either. The only bit that she could see being possibly true or was connectable to something going on in her life was

Iris supposed that this could refer to everything that had happened over the summer, with Evan and Aaron. But how on Earth would she be able to put that down in words ... for class no less! Iris looked over to Evan, then to Aaron, then back to the book.

Great.

She read and re-read what the R trait meant. What ever it meant, it really did not mean her.

Jacoby listened intently to Professor Shackleton, then looked at his text book. He decided that this was going to be the difficult part of the lesson, finnally finding be he rad to himself

B: You may be more emotional and shy than usual. You have a strong need for love and can fall prey to emotional love- affairs. You have to watch for problems with health, especially related to your nervous system. You need plenty of rest. Be receptive, listen to the advice of others. There will be improvement in your career due to your sensitivity and diplomacy. Others are attracted to you and want to help you in your endeavors.

He read though one more time and then started to break it down on his Parchment thinking that writing it down would make it easier:

you may be more emotional and shy then usual....Well of course that was simple...I have started a new school in a world I had never known exsisted, I have no relation to anyone in this world, no knoledge of the people or the things that go one... (though he had a good start so far with his first arithmancy lesson) he stpped and dipped the quill into the ink thinking of the rest. It didn't make much sense but he thought of things that were happening to him...watch for problems with health, especially related to your nervous system. You need plenty of rest he had not been sleeping well but that was mostly due to excitment, Others are attracted to you and want to help you in your endeavors who was going to help him with what efforts. Then he had a sudden strike of inspiration... I am in need of a place to stay seeing as i am no longer welcome at my ship...He thought for a few more seconds then decided this was sufficeint for the first day though he didn't know realy how much desifering Professor Shackleton wanted and put his quill down, this was going to be a very difficult class if this is how hard the work will be, maybe even harder and he found that writing it down did not help much...and was much more of a time waster.

Jake still sat, writing all sorts on his work, trying hard to think back to whatever MacShack had said. It just wasn't WORKING. "GUUHHHHH!" the boy exclaimed quietly, scribbling out everything on his parchment before crumpling it up and throwing it away from him. Then he tried to start again.

Torin looked up his current Physical Transit as he heard Professor Shackleton let 2 Ravenclaws get it. He was just glad that it they weren't in his House. It was bad enough with Willie Crocker losing them 10 points for flinging poo around.

Jack blinked and couldn't help but stare at Shackleton as she punished the two Ravenclaw's who were misbehaving. YIKES! Note to self: NEVER get Shackleton angry. It was like watching a tamer version of that green muggle dude the Hulk transform before their eyes. EEP!

He looked down at his textbook and wrote down the description for the letter A, even though the professor had just said it when she was writing her own description earlier. He couldn't copy it down that fast when she was speaking, though, and it was a lost cause.

In the past year he had gone from being a nobody loser to a studmuffin ~~and there we go with that ego again!~~ He went from being a fan of Quidditch to Quidditch CAPTAIN, and he had a girlfriend. Or, so he thought. He HOPED he still had a girlfriend, unless Torin had managed to snatch her from him completely!

And his new perspective on life was that...you didn't have to spend all your life sitting in the back waiting for someone to talk to YOU, you should take charge and do it yourself. Yes, he had definitely learned that!

Sloane stopped and realized she couldn't quite comprehend the rest. Her parents were rather well off, she really did not have any worries but she did work out every evening. Sloane shrugged, she preferred to keep these calculations between her, the professor and parchment. That was it!

Herminny raised her hand and said, "I have'nt been in the transit R for very long, I've only been 13 about a month now but I think I may have experienced the worst at the feat but that is only cause I personally am really enmotional about the plights of others including those I don't know. I found the public humiliation of two students at the feast regardless of their actions was absolutely horrble but I realized I could'nt make a comotion about it at the feast even though I dearly wanted to and it just felt like the lowest of low I have ever felt cause I hated watching something so degrading. I have'nt experienced the best yet though.".
