Ella smacked her forehead with the palm of her hand. "Ohhh..."

She needed tutoring, or needed to pay attention harder. She didn't want to look stupid, which she think she did. UGGGGH. Please, magic enter my brain and make me smarter.

Oh, yeah, like that was going to work.

Then, Ella felt a lightbulb illuminate her brain...

Ack, just kidding. It was just the smack of Jake's chair that gave her purple images in her head. She doubled over in laughter, then quickly shut up. No more points from Gryffie. Not now.

Perhaps Hogwarts wouldn't be too difficult after all, hmm? She thought about what the professor was saying, then raised her hand to ask for clarification. "Professor, I have a question. So pretty much the numerical value of the letter is how long the meaning of the letter will apply to our life?" she asked. "Sooo, if my name starts with an L, I'd experience the meaning of the letter L for three years? Then so on with the letter O lasting for six years?" This Arithmancy was sort of...kind of...maybe starting to click.

"Yes, indeed. Very good. Let me show you and the class what I mean."

Professor Shackleton began writing quickly upon the board. She printed first her first name and then wrote their numerical equivalents below.

Quote:

MACADRIAN
413149915
She explained, "From birth to age four, my Physical Transit was M. The A applied for one year, until I turned five years old. Then the C was my Transit for three years, from age five to my eighth birthday. Then A again from age eight to nine for that one year. Then a Physical Transit of D for four years, from age nine to thirteen. From age thirteen to age 22, my Physical Transit was R. Followed by another nine years until birthday 31 where the 'I' was my Physical Transit. During my 31st year of life until I turned 32, my Physical Transit was an A once again. And for five years, from age 32 til I became 37, my Physical Transit was an N.

"Now obviously, I'm still here so I didn't die at age 37 just because my name ran out of letters. Instead, the cycle began again, starting at the first letter of my first name and repeating through the cycle."

Macadrian added a chart to the board:

Quote:

Age, Transit
0-4, M (4)
4-5, A (1)
5-8, C (3)
8-9, A (1)
9-13, D (4)
13-22, R (9)
22-31, I (9)
31-32, A (1)
32-37, N (5)
37-41, M (4)
41-42, A (1)
"I've stopped this chart in the year I am currently living. This means that my Physical Transit right now, as I am between by forty-first and forty-second birthday, is the letter A. I am not yet going to look up what that means because I want you all to assign your own names and stop when you reach your current age."

Shortly after finishing her request, Macadrian heard a loud bang and turned to see Jake getting up off the ground. Hmmm. Wonder how that happened... I hope he's not drifting off to sleep already. He seems alright and I bet he's awake now if he wasn't before.

Jack watched, as if in slow motion, as the young Huffie went over backwards. After figuring out that the lad was okay, Jack had an urge to laugh, but knew that wouldn't be very nice. Best stay on subject.

But then he realised.

His chair. He was leaning too f-

BANG!

"I'm okay!" Jake exclaimed from the floor, as he picked himself and his chair up. "I just... dropped my... pen. I mean, quill," he muttered, grabbing a quill from his desk and holding it up, pretending he'd picked it up off the floor. "Yeah..."

Ahem.

And Jake bent his face low to the parchment, inwardly cursing his idiocy, before looking over quickly at Marsupial.

Eyes still on the professor, LouAnn saw the boy next to her zoom right past her line of vision and with a BANG!, he hit the floor. Biting her lip even harder to fight the sudden urge to laugh out loud, LouAnn leaned over and watched as the poor boy picked himself and the desk up, then mumbled something about a dropped quill. She gave him an apologetic look, then turned to look at the professor once again. Realizing he was still looking over towards her, LouAnn added a short line to message she'd written to him a few seconds earlier.

Told ya so.

Tiberius grinned when they were told to figure out the lengths of time for their names. He realized, though, that he'd only get through a few letters since he was only 11. Jotting the request down quickly, his looked over his parchment again.

Quote:

age transit
0-2 T (2)
2-11 I (9)
*11-13* B (2)
Tibi was itching to chart out the rest, given that there were still so many letters in his name, but he was careful about following instructions.

IamSloane 09-19-2009 08:04 PM

Sloane checked the board and began to fill in her name.
S-1
L-3 (2-4)
O-6 (5-10)
A-1 (11)
N-
E-
She stopped at her current age as requested. This wasn't as bad as she thought it was.

Kiri bent her head in ferocious calculation and started scribbling away in her notebook. She checked her Arithmancy textbook for reference.
K... two... I and R... nine...

And she was fourteen years old, which meant... She jotted down a few more numbers.

Quote:

0-2 K (2)
2-11 I (9)
11-20 R (9)
Well, the third letter in her short name would, as it were, last her until she was 20 years old (still so many years away!). Which meant, according to textbook and professor, that her current Physical Transit would be... R!

She drew a circle around the letter, then put her quill aside. She wondered what that letter would mean for her.

Torchwood 09-19-2009 08:07 PM

Wow. Jack was on his third time through his name and several hadn't gone through theirs once, yet. Bizarre.

MidnightSilver 09-19-2009 08:07 PM

Everything was starting to make sense. Thank God. Now Ella felt better.

"Is this it?"

E-4
L-3
L-3
A-1 ♥

Ella drew a little heart next to the Physical Transit she was in. She didn't even have to repeat.

"It only goes up to nine, right?" she asked nobody in particular, hoping they would understand the question. "I'm eleven."

Professor Shackleton repressed a sigh, "I've not yet begun checking anyone's work yet. Please follow my directions and when it is time for me to verify your work, I will announce it. Please write a chart for your name in the same format that I have written one for mine."

Evelyn was staring blankly up at the ceiling trying while waiting for the professor to show the demonstration with her name when she heard a loud noise, startling her and making her bang her knees against the desk. "Ow." she mumbled, rubbing her now sore knees. Stretching her neck to see what the noise was, she heard a boy saying he dropped his pen, no, quill on the ground. 'Nice save...' she thought sarcastically, and then looked down at her textbook and started reading, trying to figure out what all these numbers and names meant.
She didn't have to read long before the professor started her demonstration. After the professor spoke, something finally clicked in her mind and she understood right away. "Alright!" Evelyn whispered to herself and started working on her own name.

E V E L Y N
5 4 5 3 7 5

After figuring out her own numbers, she looked up at the professors name to see how to finish it.

age
E, 0-5,
V, 5-9,
E, 9-14,
L,
Y,
N,

"There we go..." she mumbled to herself as she finished writing, wearing a satisfied smile.

Lissy Longbottom 09-19-2009 08:14 PM

Jack sighed. Why was his name so short? He wanted a cool LONG name so that a lot of exciting things could happen to him with all those awesome letters! He wrote it out once...twice...he was almost through his third cycle! GEEZ!

Iris listened to Professor Shackleton. Noooowww it was all beginning to make sense to Iris again. She made notes about the stuff that she will need later on, then listened again... Sooo we have to figure our own transit thingy out now? ... Iris picked up her quill and began to work her transit cycle number thing ....

Iris ... So, I is 9 .... R is 9 as well ... I is 9 ... and S is 1 .... So ... My transit Cylce number thing is going to be R for nearly ALL of my school life? ... Cool ... I hope.

Iris wrote this down.

I R I S
9 9 9 1

0-9 - I -> 9
10-19 R -> 9
I
S

Iris looked down at her chart thing ... Wow, I'm gonna be OOLLLD before my name repeats on the chart ... She looked over to Fallon and Aaron, to see if they understood the task.

Smiling lightly, Tammy set about adjusting her notebook and textbook so that she could see the two and write in her notebook. Consulting her textbook every little while, just making sure she was on the right track she smiled, and set about working.

Current physical transit = I.
Circling the I of it she nodded quickly, setting her quill down, glancing back at Jake just to check he wasnt suffering with a concussion or anything.

Anna Banana 09-19-2009 08:17 PM

With the boy next to her off the floor and no longer leaning over towards her, LouAnn focused all her attention on the instructions the professor was giving them. Little by little, LouAnn began to piece together this mystery known as Physical Transit. It'd take a lot of work to get it all down pat, but at least she was confident that she had a good starting point.

Alright, time to get started with her own Physical Transit. At least her first name was only six letters long, so it wouldn't take her forever to get everything down on paper. Besides, she only had to keep going until she reached her current age, which was fifteen. She flipped back and forth between the two chapters they were discussing, then began her work.

______0-3; L; 3 years
______3-9; O; 6 years
_____9-12; U; 3 years
____12-13; A; 1 year
13-present; N; 5 years, ending at age 18 (currently 15).

Current Physical Transit = N

ARABELLE
19125335

Was that right? Arabelle checked her book and the professor's work again. It looked right. But her head was so fuzzy it was hard to concentrate.

...Wait. Were they supposed to do their whole names or stop at their current age? Arabelle let out a little sigh. Her brain hurt.

Felixir 09-19-2009 08:19 PM

Noticing that MacShack had picked up on the fall, but said nothing, Jake thanked his lucky stars. Another quick glance at LouAnn and Jake saw her next message, making him supress a giggle.

So, noticing others were beginning to write stuff down, Jake stared at his parchment and held his quill over it, poised to write.

And he stared.

Because he hadn't been paying any attention, Jake had even LESS of a clue about what he was doing. So... he continued to stare down at the parchment, maybe nick someone's notes a little later.

Nicholas Flamel 09-19-2009 08:20 PM

Tavelon started writing out his name, referencing the chart in his textbook. Things were starting to make sense, at least on a certain level. He still wasn't quite sure how magic associated with numbers. But then again, that's what the class would teach.
Quote:

Letter Age Number
T-_____0-2____2
A-_____2-3____1
V-_____3-7____4
E-_____7-12___5
L-
O-
N-
Tavelon's name was so long that it covered even more than up to his current age. He copied it down on another sheet of parchment, just for fun so he could see what would lie in the future.
Quote:

Letter/ Age/ Number
T-_____0-2____2
A-_____2-3____1
V-_____3-7____4
E-_____7-12____5
L-_____12-15___3
O-____15-21____6
N-____21-26____5

Everyone else was still filling out their names, so Tavelon looked in his book to see what he was currently. "Five" he said under his breath "'Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility'" He was in a big transition, going to Hogwarts. But did he make the connection because he knew that was his current number or because the number really predicted it? Tavelon was still a little puzzled at how something so concrete and logical like numbers could be so ambiguous.

Blink. Blink. Blink blink blink. SUPER BLINK. Uh...whoa. Where the heck did she get those numbers? Ages? Division? WHAT?! Lucy scrambled through her notes, and attempted to decipher what Professor Shackleton meant. Seriously, though...WHAT?!?! She practically dove into her notes and stared carefully at the numbers, her face literally an inch away from the parchment.

She sat back up, and took a deep breath. Mmmkay. This wasn't making much sense right now, and it was at that point when Lucy realized this wasn't easy work anymore. She wrote her name down like so:

Quote:

L -
U -
C -
Y -
Marveling at how short it was, she believed it might be easy to solve this problem. Or...maybe not. She didn't have an "A" in her first name like most people...and...hmm. She was 14, almost 15 in a month...Lucy looked into her book and found the descriptions for the letters of her name. Perhaps that would help?

SPOILER!!: Textbook
Quote:

L: This is not a time to hurry. You want to carefully and thoroughly consider your path, plans, and future. This is a mental time, a time to think and look for the deeper meaning of your desires and expectations. Try to take all available opportunities to travel. Involvement with the arts and expressing your own creativity is highly rewarding during this time. You will make new friends easily. This is also a favorable time for marriage. However, thoughtlessness and careless action may cause you to lose friends and resources.

U: This is an intuitive and sensitive time in which you may find yourself unwilling to put out much effort. You lack motivation and initiative. A lot of old and long forgotten emotional issues may surface. People you have not heard from in a long time will call upon you. Relatives and family may require effort and attention. You have much creativity and enhanced self-expression. Use it and promote yourself. This Transit offers an opportunity for great achievements in the arts, especially in writing, acting and music.

C: You will be better able to express yourself. You are more creative and original. You will be intuitive and may experience premonitions or other psychic experiences. You feel more adventurous and make several new friends. There will be an increase in social events. You are capable of self-promotion. This is a good time for business, especially sales.

Y: This is a time of spiritual growth and perception of higher realms. You are very intuitive and psychic perceptions will take place. Soul-searching and meditation are extremely beneficial to you during this time. Your sense of direction is somewhat clouded, inspiring serious self-examination. You are in search of new friends and contacts with others of similar intellectual needs. There may be some minor health problems. You should avoid stimulants and extreme foods.

Uhhh...no numbers there. But it was nice to know what her letters stood for. Numbers, numbers, numbers...She casually glanced at the papers of other students, hoping to catch a hint, a clue, SOMETHING, to help her out...Oh, boy, this was hurting her head.

Quote:

L - 0-3 (3?)
U - 4-7 (4?)
C - 8-11 (4?)
Y - 12-14 (3?)
She wrote down question marks next to her final answers because quite frankly, she had practically given up on trying to figure it out. For the first time in her life, tears began forming in her eyes. Never in her life had Lucy have so much trouble in school. This was only the first lesson and she was scared to death and knew nothing!! Eep.

Virgi took another piece of parchment out and jotted it down for fun to see how long her name would last her.

V-4 (0-4)
I-9 (4-13)
R-9 (13-22)
G-7 (22-29)
I-9 (29-38)
N-5 (38-43)

Damon was rather confused at how this next task was done but hoping he might get somewhere he made an attempt at it

Quote:

D: 0-4 (4)
A: 4-5 (1)
M: 5-9 (4)
O: 9- (6)
N: (5)
Damon felt he could not go any farther after M because the numbers went above his current age which was 11. He knew he would have to study harder as it was. So he would make his best effort. He wished he could get more insight.

Harron Peasley 09-19-2009 08:32 PM

Laura nodded a few times, before looking down at her text book. I can do this! were her thoughts, as she pulled out a quill.

Quote:

L A U R A
3 1 3 9 1

L - 0-3
A - 3-4
U - 4-7
(R - 7-16)
A - 16-17

Highlighting the R, due to the fact she was still thirteen, Laura sat back and surveyed her work. Arithmancy was one of her favourite subjects, and the year was so far off to a good start. She just hoped her work was right.

Hmm. She pondered, then peered in the textbook for the descriptions.

SPOILER!!: Textbook Descriptions

L: You tend to intellectualize experience, which can make you slow to react or make decisions. You are honest and sincere. You are not prejudiced. You give easily and have a good-natured disposition. You move quite often and travel more than most. During times of emotional stress you are prone to minor accidents. It is very important for you to maintain equilibrium in all aspects of life.

A: You are ambitious, independent and have great drive, you are not easily influenced. You are mental and direct. You want to take charge. You have willpower and are resolute and purposeful. You have courage and boldness but may also be stubborn and willful. Be more flexible and willing to listen to others.

U: Accumulation and loss - especially money - are weighted equally in your life. Indecisiveness and selfishness are at the root of the problem. Learn to size up situations more quickly and then be ready to give your energy and commitment. You are very creative, intuitive and intelligent, and have a knack for showing up at the right time and the right place. You tend to be "lucky"! You are attractive and charming and can be quite glamorous.

R: You are highly emotional and carry an intense inner power. You are lively and can work hard. You must try to stay balanced and even tempered. You must also learn to be less critical and more tolerant. You can be gentle, kind, and helpful. You are willing to sacrifice time and energy for a good cause. You tend to lose things and may have a bad memory.

A:

She didn't see the need in repeating A, and so just read over the results, concentrating on R particularly. She scoffed mentally as she read U, though. Not once in her life had she been 'Glamorous'.

But R sound like her. A Lot. Especially at the moment.

T 5-7 (2)
H 7-16 (8)
E 16-21 (5)
U 21-24 (3)

During the years that H has listed, Matheu's best characteristic is 8. Authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, organization, self-mastery The only one he was excited about was the self-mastery. Economics was not his favorite.
