As you step into the transfiguration classroom, you will notice the new arrangement of the room. The center part of the room is empty, for its desks have been squeezed into rows at the left and right of the room. A stack of blank pieces of parchment sits on Professor Svensson's desk, and although Professor Svensson himself is nowhere to be seen, it would be wise to sit quietly until given further instruction.

He was no vegetarian... but the lemurs--they were an INSPIRATION! "Cons... hmm. Well there's female dominance in lemurs. I find that very, very bad," he wasn't so sure if it was a sexist comment but eh, "aaaaaand I can't think up of anything else."

He really didn't know.

Satine giggled at the excitement of the boy over the lemur and shook her head as he explained the pros and cons of his favorite animal. As he explained, she started to realize that maybe a butterfly wasn't as cool sounding as a lemur, but it did def have it's benefits.

"You have some pretty freakin awesome points, I'm not sure if I can beat those..." she paused and thought for a minute. "Okay, a butterfly...let's see... Pros...some are poisonous and lure in people with their pretty colors and then get them....they can fly which is of course a huge huge pro...and...they are pretty fast...and they are colorful..." she added the last one in pretty quickly since she had said three pros...." And no cons...well you can step on them or squash them and they are a goner...but only if you can catch them....ummmm....they can change forms but only once....and....well...they are pretty little." she even admitted to herself that her cons were pretty well con-ny and didn't help the case of her animal much...but the pros were pretty dang cool.

"So, now, let's see....which to choose." she said looking at her list of the pros and cons of both animals....

Knowing her she'd probably be running in the other direction, but that was just Melanie and she could be a bit of a...scaredy cat. "Whatever though, that would still be cool." she finished thinking about meeting a kangaroo. "Extremely fun, but I bet it would be funner if you could like...talk to it." Melanie finished, a sort of day dreamy look on her face now as she imagined talking to a kangaroo. Ama-zING!!

"Thanks." Melanie replied as Natasha said the animal she picked was a cool one. "You're right." she informed her matter-oh-factually with an all knowing nod of her head. "Your's is too." she added, grinning. But she'd have to deduct points for the fact cheetah's could probably eat kangaroos. Sniffle Evil food chain...

Melanie looked thoughtful once more as Natasha went over the possibilities of having one of a Kangaroo's traits. "Hmmm, you're right about the jumping thing, but their is always Quidditch, if I wanna go up high... But I can't run as fast as a kangaroo can jump sooo...Hmpf. This is a hard decision." she agreed with a small sigh, still mauling the possibilities over in her head. Stupid decision making skills. Just watch a few seconds from now and her head would explode off her body from all that thinking...or turn to banana pudding...

Guh.

Leave it to class to mess with her brain... Melanie sat their for a few seconds not really saying anything, but still trying to think of the characteristic she'd want from a kangaroo...

"I-I think I'll go with the feet!" Melanie blurted out, with a grin, perhaps a bit too loud than she should have, considering she was in a classroom and all. But she couldn't help it. Just. Too. Exciting. "I mean, they have to be more fun than better ears and all those other things so why not the feet." she said with a shrug small.

"We'd both be really fast like a ninja and all stealthy like if we both got he traits we wanted!" she said, shifting in her seat, as Natasha said that she would take the speed of a cheetah. Melanie quickly scribbled down their choices on a piece of spare parchment so she wouldn't forget. At least that way if her brain really did turn to banana pudding then she'd still know what their decision's had been... she rested her head on her fist, glancing around at the people around her and listening to them discussing things...

Melanie paused in her excitement for a moment realizing that people around her were choosing one animal between the two of them and one trait.

Uh-oh, guess they weren't done yet. "I think we need to pick one trait...out of the two animals..." she said slowly, brows drawing in slightly. "Any ideas on how to choose?" she asked hopefully, her mind going blank.

Nancy blinked a few times, her brow furrowing slightly, as she watched the boy apparently thinking over his options. He just had to pair up with her. He just had to. How could he even consider not partnering up with her?! What a weirdo. Why did she always have to end up with people like that?

And why the heck was he looking at her like that?! Like she was some sort of dangerous psycho or something. Why couldn't he just behave like the good Gryffindor he supposedly was and follow her to her desk so they could discuss this assignment?! Wait! Gryffindor?! But that meant... Nancy turned her head a bit to the right to take in the boy's appearance again because she should probably know him as they were forced to share a Common Room. With her head slightly cocked to the side she suddleny somehow remembered having talked to him briefly in the Common Room. But what was his name again? David? No. Dominic? No. Daniel!

Ha! He had apparently chosen to pair up with her after all. Well, he didn't have much of a choice anyhow. A small smirk played around the corner of her lips as she quickly sat down at her desk again, motioning for Daniel to do the same as soon as he'd reached it. Quickly scanning through the boy's parchment Nancy considered his choice for a while with great interest before showing him her own parchment. "You should have been in Ravenclaw then." Then with a small amused roll of her eyes she added, "Sorry, that was off-topic. Uhm, so, an eagle? Yeah, I guess flying would be an awesome characteristic to have. And good eye sight? Not too bad either." A small nod at her own parchment later Nancy continued, "So, I chose a wolf. Just because uhm they can easily adapt to their environment and well, I just love their fur. It's beautiful. They are beautiful." Okay, not very good characteristics but whatever.

In her thoughts she didn't notice what Cela was doing and blinked a few times at her before puffing out a bit of air. "I never thought of it like that," she contemplated sticking out her tongue and tapping her index finger against it twice. "I think I can do it."

So she streeeetched out her tongue as it could go and only with a bit of struggle touched the tip of her nose.

About to mumble something along the lines of: 'So you were right after all!' to Cela, the blond Gryffindor was deadly distracted by the workings of a certain Quidditch player.

And Daphne's tongue sort of just hung there, half in her mouth and half exposed to the magical world of Hogwarts. Wow. What was it that they were saying about flexibility?

Something seemed to be going wrong with Daphne. She seemed in a trance of sorts, and she also lost all motor control of her tongue. What was wrong with her? Ohmygosh, he hoped she wasn't about to have a fit or something. "Daphne, you ok?" he asked, abandoning his attempt to touch his tongue to his nose.

Was it just him, or was Daphne frowning when he said he was going to hug Cela? Interesting...was he really that huggable? He hardly thought so, but maybe he was wrong. "I'll practice on both of you," he told Daphne in an attempt to make her happy again, even though he was still a bit confused as to why she was disappointed in the first place.

So, it seemed that they had agreed on koala arms. Hehe.

He sat besides Nancy and sets aside the thoughts of her being a psycho and then became serious with the assignment. He then scratches his chin and cleared his throat and then said.

"That would be good. If we will too combine the attributes of your animal with mine, we can have a keen eye-sight and an exceptional sense of smell." he said totally ignoring the beautiful things like the coat or the adaptability of the animal.

He then grabbed parchment and then scribbled something and then showed it to Nancy.

Just the eye thing and... could they change their colors? No... that was chameleons, or whatever their name was.

"Um... I don't know much about iguanas, actually." the first year admitted. "But if you want to do eagles... Okay." She looked at another group which seemed to choose eagle as well. Whateverr. Probably there was no more eagle-choosers.

"Yeah, amazing isn't it?" Grace said, obviously fascinated with that fact. Her mouth was dropped open when she had first read that article either. Back to the business, which characteristics to choose? "I can go either with wings and eyes, it doesn't matter to me. What do you wanna have?" Yup, always be polite.

It seemed that everyone had partners now. And the time was definitely ripe to move on. "Finish up your discussions, if you can. I'm going to ask you some questions next, and then you'll be able to ask questions, and then we'll move on to the spell itself."

Now. It seemed silly to ask, but Professor Svensson wanted to know how many students--if any--had guessed what they were going to be learning today. "Now, from what I've just had you all discuss, what do you think I'm going to teach today?" he asked as he strolled behind his desk and to pick up his wand.

Kiri stopped her conversation with Lyra as the professor stopped his silent surveying of the class to speak. She turned around, wondering whether to reply to the question. The answer seemed obvious, but if there was one thing she'd learned at Hogwarts (apart from spells, charms, potions, astrological signs and avoiding creatures that would bite your head off), it was to be very careful with obvious. She gave it a shot anyway.

"Well, I think you will teach us how to transform parts of our bodies into animals' body parts, Professor," she said, a little uncertainly despite everything.

Clifford listened boredly when Professor Svensson spoke up. Normally, he would've been bouning in excitement.. but meh, he wasn't really in the mood right now. Instead, the Head Boy simply raised his hand. "Uh.. are we gonna transfigure ourselves? Well.. part of ourselves into part of an animal? Like part animagi or something?" It made sense.

That's why I asked you all to find partners: so that you can help keep an eye on each other, and so that I don't have an entire class all trying to transfigure themselves at the same time." Now to move on to the next question.

"This is not the same as becoming an animagus, for several reasons. Can you guess the reasons?"

Human transfiguration! That sounded very exciting, even to Kiri. She had no idea how that would work - or even if she was able to do it - but the prospect alone was very interesting. The instruction to pair up with older students was clear now, too. It worried Kiri a little. She was hardly old enough to be expected to pull this off, was she?

She raised her hand again. It was a little strange to do so while not being seated behind a desk as usual. "An animagus transforms his whole body into an animal, right? Wouldn't that be much more difficult? And then to transform back, too? Without a wand?"

Human Transfiguration...? Well it wasn't like she hadn't seen this coming, it was pretty obvious, but still. Whereas she'd been extremely excited earlier, now there was a tinge of fear mixed in with all that giddy excitement. Her enthusiasm still reigned though....for the moment anyway.

Melanie took a deep breath before responding to the question at hand, raising her arm up in the air. "Well, sir, I think an animagus's whole body's transforms into the animal they choose and it takes years of hard and dedicated practice to even accomplish that. Also we'll only be taking on one part of the animal, while an animagus would transform into a entire certain animal, mind still intact like it would be for us transforming a single part of the body, except that the animals instincts are also there and you still have to try and think as a human. Otherwise it could be hard to turn back into a human being when you're finished. I think it sounds a lot more difficult than simply transforming one or two body parts while using a wand, even while that would still be pretty hard, I suspect." she finished, taking a deep breath as she did so. She hoped that was right....or at least somewhat close to what he was looking for. The second year let her arm drop to her side, looking hopeful at the prospect.

Freakin' awesome points? WOOHOO.

Cam listened to her butterfly pros and cons, and was a bit shocked that some butterflies were poisonous. POISONOUS?! But they looked all so frilly and girly--he never knew they could be so evil! Butterflies having the ability to fly, he liked that really. He wanted to fly when he grew up. LIKE, FLYING WAS AWESOME. Colorful too. And she was off to the cons. Squashing a butterfly? EW. It'd be all... yuckkkk.

"I choose lemurs," he told her confidently, because having butterfly wings were girlish and having poisonous stuff on him was... people would have been even more scared of him. "What you say?"

He turned around and faced the professor, raising his hand. "Beeecaaaause..." he really wasn't sure of what animaguses were really, he was wondering why he always raised his hand even, "An animagus can like, turn themselves as a whole animal and I don't think they need a wand to transform."

Jack had been right--they WERE going to transfigure themselves today. EEEEE! This was exciting! He just hoped that he wouldn't mess up and end up with koala arms forever--that would make playing Quidditch incredibly difficult.

He raised his hand. "Well, an animangus can transform their entire body into the animal of their choosing, but it takes years and YEARS of practice to be able to do so. Also, you have to register with the Ministry, I think, and let them know what animal you're able to change into. I can't remember if you have to have your wand ON you to transform, but no incanation needs to be cast for them to transfigure--they can do it whenever they please." he explained.

Simone raised her hand before answering and replied, "An Animagus is a witch or wizard who can turn into a specific animal at will. They dont need a wand to do so, and it does take a very long time to learn it. They have to register at the ministry, if they dont they can be arrested and put on trial, and possibly be sent to Azkaban." She knew a lot about this because she was training to become an animagus with her Aunt, but no one needed to know that. "As for human transfiguration, You can turn yourself or others into a full animal, unless of course ou do the spell incorrectly and then you turn them into half animal half human. You obviously need a wand for it." She smiled and put her hand back down.

Since Ryder for some reason decided to sit next to her today, she wrote on the side of her notes:

Out of the corner of his eye, Ryder noticed that Simone passed him a note. He closed his eyes for a moment and then looked at the paper. Hmm...do I want to subject myself to the torture of being her partner? Is that what I'm reading?

Ryder raised his hand. "Just to add to what she said, Professor? In human transfiguration, from human to an animal form, our brains turn into an animals brain. Therefore, once we are in the animal form, we do not remember what we were supposed to be doing. We go into a sort of animal instict mode and forget about being human. In the Animagus form, we have the ability to be that animal but also remember what we were doing duing that time period."

After Ryder finished his answer, he decided to take a moment to reflect on Simone's answer. Without taking his eyes off of the Professor, he grabbed the piece of paper. He wrote:

Raising her hand, Anna said, "When we utilize ordinary Transfiguration to turn ourselves into an animal, we ultimately adopt the brain and mindset of that animal. This is most unfortunate, because we end up not being able to successfully remember the things that we should know and recall from actually being a human...rather than the animal we've transfigured into." Did that make any sense? It sounded good while she'd been thinking about it, but as she spoke it, it sort of sounded confusing. Ahh, well. Maybe the professor could get something from her ramblings.

"The difference in being an animagi is that you can change yourself into a particular animal, yet you're still able to retain your usual brain and mindset. Changing in this form is done at will, and it doesn't require the usage of a wand," she continued. "With an animagi, the animal form is a direct relection of the human form, too. You can often see similar traits in the human form and in the animagus form. With ordinary transfiguration, you change into an exact form of the particular animal."

Oh, Grace knew the answer--well at least she thought so. She rose her hand and answered with all that 'I know' excitement. "Animagus still resembles the person who changes. But with transforming yourself by your wand, you are exactly the same with that kind. While most of this was new knowledge for her, Diane did decide to raise her hand to answer something. "Could it be there are different levels for transfiguration - one that tranforms a person entirely into an animal including its brain, another that is a partial transfiguration and changes everything except the brain - or transforms in such way the mental processes and previous knowledge aren't lost -, and a third one which is a more illusory transfiguration... what would be the case if you, say, transformed into inanimate object like a couch, but you could still breath, feel and think as yourself."

Satine thought about for a minutes...he just really wanted to have an extra unique animal so a lemur would work..."Honestly I think a lemur is a rawking idea! It's unique and different and a lot harder to kill than a butterfly...let's shoot for that one." she said with a smile.

Daniel gave his attention to the Professor and then raised his hand, "Professor, the first obvious difference is the need for the use of a wand. Being an animagus is learned through hard work and constant practice. Transfiguring a person into an animal is needs less practice than with the animagus. But I don't say it doesn't need one." he said.

He then paused a moment to think what was it like to be an animagus for himself is one. Not perfect but at least he is. "And when one is an animagus, you are aware of what you are doing and your conscious of you being an animal, while when one is transfigured you are not aware of what you are doing."

"Very good, everybody," Lars said with a nod of approval. "Now... when we get around to performing the spell, it will be absolutely vital that you have, in your mind's eye, an clear image of what you want to transfigure. The incantation and wand movement must be accurate for you to perform the spell correctly, of course, but your intent is just as important." Professor Svensson realized that he had been waving his arms around for emphasis--and with his wand in hand, he had apparently been letting sparks fly around him. He stowed his wand behind his ear, and continued speaking as if he had never stopped.

"Now, first we'll go over the incantation. Put your wands down, and practice pronouncing it correctly: Bestiar arm," Lars said slowly. "Except, in place of arm, you would say whichever body part you intend to transfigure. As I would probably choose to borrow a canary's wings, I would say 'arm' so that my arms would turn into yellow wings. But I would also have to keep in my mind the animal and the wings." He slipped his wand from behind his ear and a gentle wave of it conjured a chalkboard which said the following:
