The first thing you notice about this office is the exceptionally large desk, which, if you look closer; seems to have unusual scuffmarks on its surface. Perhaps it serves a less mundane purpose than simply a desk? A large and comfortable looking chair sits behind it; obviously this is Ethan’s chair though you will rarely find him sitting in it.

Three smaller, yet no less comfortable looking chairs are arranged facing the desk, ready for any visiting students to take a seat. While waiting you might notice a large bookcase along one wall; though there are no books on it. Instead it is brimming with photo frames. Pictures of Ethan in his days as a student at WADA (if you look closely at the one on the left, you might recognize another Hogwarts staff member shuffling a pack of cards and doing one of those hit-with-the-ladies grins that former rockstars are quite good at) , one of him as a thirteen year old in Slytherin robes, a selection of him a few years ago with various dragons in the background, a newer one featuring dragons (and a certain fiery red headed professor), one of him on a muggle sailing ship, another on stage dressed in tights and holding a skull and one of him in Egypt working with curse breakers.

An old looking gramophone sits on the bookcase with a selection of records stacked haphazardly to one side, various eras of music are represented; of both the wizarding and the muggle variety. On the walls his OWL and NEWT results are proudly displayed alongside certificates proclaiming his knowledge and familiarity with various Dragon breeds.

A large basket sits in one corner, and a slight snoring sound can often be heard coming from this direction where Ethan’s chihuahua makes its bed.

The walls and ceiling are blue for reasons Truebridge hasn’t discovered, and he's been meaning to do something about that.

There are some fairly intense precautions against intruders this term, many charms are weaved around the doorway, the windows, all over the floors and on his desk drawers. If you go poking about, you will quite literally be caught 'red handed', startled by a ridiculously loud caterwauling charm (which might likely be heard from the Defense Against the Dark Arts and Muggle Studies classrooms), possibly glued to whichever surface you touch and maybe even temporarily blinded. If you happen to have any difficulties with your joints, particularly your hips, it would be wise not to enter without making an appointment, the floor has been cursed to dislocate joints which have already suffered irreversible spell damage.

He was even contemplating an age line to keep anyone over 100 years out.

It might be said that Professor Truebridge has grown slightly paranoid after his duel with Professor Kazimeriz the previous term.

In any case, there is now a wooden bench and a large and dusty ledger outside of his office If you wish to speak to him, you need to write your name in the ledger and take a seat on the bench, or alternatively, leave a note in the ledger and Professor Truebridge will owl you when he has a free moment.

Leaning back in his chair, Jake bit his lip, thinking of the one man he was sooooooo sure he hated, the one man who he DID NOT want to talk about, but who always seemed to HAVE to pop up in his mind.

"Also, sir... you know Professor Lawson?" Jake's tone was not one of interest as to whether the man really DID know him, because Jake was already aware of their friendship... it was more of a 'you knowwww' rather than a 'you know'.

Yeah?

Yeah!

Truebridge eyed the broken wand and sighed in commiseration, he knew what it felt like to... that was when Ethan noticed the little box on his desk. When had that...?

He opened it and sketched himself out with the contents. It was like a WAND COFFIN!

LORETTA!

He sighed and stared at the shattered wand, immediately thinking of the duel with Kazimeriz. Zan tilted the box so that Jake could see inside.

Yeah he knew all about losing a wand.

"Would you mind telling me how you lost your temper? And what your detention was for? Do try if you can, to tell me without giving it a slant one way or another. Think clearly and try to be impartial in the retelling."

Ethan paused as Jake spoke again. "Well... yes I do."

Chewing on his thumbnail, Jake leaned forwards and gazed into the box that Truebridge was tilting towards him. Another broken wand. Siiiiigh. Jake had only had his wand for about a year before it got broke, Truebridge must have had his for longer.

And Jake still got sad about his own wand snapping.

HEAVY SIIIIIIIGH.

"Erm, well..." Impartial, well... that was easy, just tell it how it happened. You've already paid the price... s'all good. Kinda. "We were on the seventh floor... and well, when I say 'we' I mean me and Clark," Jake elaborated. Truebridge knew Clark, right? Everyone knew Clark. "Well, Clark pulled down the tapestry... and Dani, my..." GIRLFRIEND "... other friend. She came along and said that IIIIIIIIIII did it too. But I didn't. And this was before we were friends... and I got really angry, because she wasn't even THERE, so how could she know, anyway? And it was an outright LIE... and I don't like that... I got mad... and... I shouted at her, and Healer Avalon told me to stop, and I didn't and..." Jake stopped for a second, realising his speech had quickened significantly, and an uncomfortable look crossed his face. "And I kind of... charged at her... Dani... and she was hiding behind the Healer... I didn't hit them though, I swear!" he promised, eyes widening a little.

Now what else was it? Oh yes... Lawson... Should he say? Meh, already started. "I don't think he likes me, Professor Lawson that is. But yeah, he set up a meeting in Hogsmeade... got Kayla Winters to come..." Jake added, swinging his feet back and forth. "Remember her? Yeah, in Hogsmeade... she made me really angry..." he admitted, suddenly remembering. "And I kinda bit her... not hard... but... yeah..."

Ahem.

Before her was Betsy," Ethan pointed to the shelves where another wand was displayed in a special case, quite unusual in appearance due to the Vipertooth fang that had split it almost perfectly in two, up to the half-way point anyhow. He moved over to Betsy and placed Loretta next to her.

Sigh.

Where were they?

Oh yes.

"You realise, that when you get angry and lose your ability to think rationally, you also lose the ability to explain things rationally and appear to be guilty even if you are not?" Ethan paused, watching Jake carefully. "I have a few questions for you."

Axe? Kayla Winters?

"Why do you think Professor Lawson doesn't like you?"

He'd get to the biting part.

... okay. Maybe it really didn't matter how long you had a wand for, if you lost it, it was like losing a limb. Jake usually had trouble on picking up emotions from others, but the basic emotions were coming through pretty much clear in this case.

Keeping his eyes on the two wands, one of which had a rather comical look about it, so much so that it was hard to suppress a smile (yet still manageable), Jake listened to what Truebridge had to say, though he didn't really understand the meaning until he turned the words over and over in his mind. Moving his bright blue eyes towards the Professor again, Jake tried to show that he kind of was sorry, but how he was supposed to show that... pfffft, how can you even DO that?

Questions, ooooh, like mastermind? Okay... GO!

"Well... maybe it has something to do with the fact that when I talk to him, or when we're in the duelling arena, he just acts like he isn't interested, or just can't be bothered..." "Yes, I learned fairly early on never to dare Axe to do anything, he'll pretty much do anything if you make it a dare."

Truebridge watched Jake carefully and asked the first question. "Do you like being at Hogwarts?"

STOOOOOOOOOOOOOP RIGHT THERE! came the little voice in the back of Jake's head. He knew he didn't want to elaborate on that, and covered his tracks by staring down at his knees again. "I wouldn't have thought that he wouldn't do something like that in his position. It's a bit reckless, if you'll excuse my hypocriticalness."

Oh, why don't you start with a HARD question, dude. Jake frowned, knowing the answer to that straight away as he continued staring at his knees and chewing on his actual thumb. "No," he answered simply, not going into any more detail than that.

"But, like... he's a teacher... position of power and all that," Jake tried, knowing that it was a poor argument to have with another teacher. Even if Truebridge seemed fair, it just... well Jake wasn't going to push this guy.

BLEH! Truebridge was too smart to be a teacher! No fair, dude. And in any case, Jake wasn't going to go into intense detail about his daaaaaaaaaad and all the crap that happened to Jake in his first year ~~like seeing somebody diiiiiiiiiiie~~ because he knew that LOADS of people in the school had stories like that, maybe they differed slightly, but it was like this school was a place for the angst ridden.

Maybe that quote would come in handy one day.

"You should think about whether you are or not because I hate to inform you Jake, but you are mighty close to crossing that line and having that happen whether you want it or not." Ethan told the Hufflepuff equally as quiet, in a voice that was tinged with regret. "I would not want to see you leave."

He wouldn't either. Jake was pretty smart under all that crazy.

"It doesn't have to be reading, though if that is something that works for you, go for it. It could be... just finding a spot you like and sitting their quietly, thinking, climbing trees, playing sport, running, enjoying a particular kind of food, writing... anything that helps ground you, takes away stress or clears your mind from the things that make you so angry all of the time."

He knew that he couldn't trust himself to speak right now, lest his voice go all funny and reveal how upset he was.

"Climbing?" Jake whispered, allowing his gaze to travel upwards and rest on Truebridge once more. Jake loved climbing, but he was always told it was something he should not do... it was hard to realise where the whole line was between acceptable and... not. "I... maybe..." he shrugged, looking back down and swinging his feet back and forth, feeling increasingly uncomfortable.

"No thoughts on that, Jake?" Ethan asked quietly, "I personally would not like to see you leave. I'd rather see you prove to everyone that you do belong here and you can control your anger. I believe you do. I believe you can."

He watched him for a moment, wishing he was better at reading emotions and the like. At least since he'd been friends with Annie, Zan had gotten a touch better at showing them.

"Climbing. Sure. Trees.... ladders now too. Maybe in the holidays you could try rock climbing. If you find you like it, perhaps even just closing your eyes and thinking about climbing when you find yourself getting worked up at all. There is a lot you can learn from doing things like that."

Chewing hard on his thumb, Jake's eyes darted around the office, trying to find some kind of distraction. Usually, he was pretty good at that, but for some reason he was managing to fail epically. Shaking his head 'no', Jake then managed to contradict himself as he opened his mouth to respond. "I don't want to be someone who... just totally failed at being... I mean... I don't want to be known for being kicked out of Hogwarts when I was twelve and going down THAT road..." he tried to explain, screwing up his eyes with the effort of putting it into words. "I mean, I totally suck at magic, but... you know..." Jake trailed off, avoiding any eye contact with the man before him.

"I like climbing," Jake admitted, sounding a little spacey. "But I scaled the outside of our block of flats once and my mother didn't like it... And I did the same thing in my dad's house, but they don't know about that," he added, before looking straight into Truebridge's face, eyes twinkling excitedly. "I got onto the roof," he said, kind of boasting, a crazy kind of happy look on his face. "It felt... like I was on top of the world."

Ahhhh, good times.

"You know there are plenty of people here who can help you. Most likely if you think about it, there are a few that have already made an effort do so. You could try letting them. I'd be willing to help you in any subjects you find you need help with." He figured Jake being angry all the time got in the way of his intent when it came to his wandwork.

Kazimeriz had helped him with that once.

"Well then." Ethan noticed the happy look and sort of mentally patted himself on the back for picking up on it even though it was quite obvious. "When you climb you should think about safety first, try climbing a few trees, and the new ladders up to the fifth floor. Celandine Toussaint, you know her? I saw her climbing trees all the time last term, perhaps she might know which ones are the best for climbing? And with that on top of the world feeling, maybe you could try thinking of that when you get frustrated or mad, think about that until you feel okay again. During the summer, do you think you might be able to go rock climbing? Is there someone at home who could take you?"

In his eyes, those people had soon become irate and fed up and no longer willing to help, meaning... well... they weren't helpful anymore. His impatience was contagious, though Jake didn't realise it as much as e refused to admit that he WAS impatient. Biting down hard on his thumb, Jake shrugged, the uncomfortable look of someone who was totally lost firmly on his face.

"Ladders?" Jake asked, looking slightly confused. He had heard nothing about these ladders, mainly because alot of his time was spent in the common room... library... under his beeeeeeeed... the usual. "Celandine? Meh, home. "My dad might be able to take me... but he said I'd be doing something this summer... like all summer." And not the most climb-worthy of things... althouuuggghhh...

Ethan Truebridge did not do impatient. He had, in his opinion, all the time in the world and so why stress about things taking time? It was like cheese. Good thing. Takes time.

You couldn't have cheese without time.

"Ladders. The ground floor has flooded and we are now on the lowest accessible floor in the castle." Aaaaaaaaaand it suddenly occurred to Ethan that he'd lose an AWFUL lot of books if the water got any higher.

"So to get outside, there are chutes... basically giant slides from the fifth floor. To get back up there are ladders."

It was an interesting idea.

"It is hard and thats why you need to find things that work for you. Sounds like climbing might. That on-top-of-the-world feeling. Being above it all? Yes. Try it, if it doesn't work we can try something else. We might have to build up to it, but we won't know until we try, right?"

Ethan nodded a bit absently. "I might be able to arrange something. An expedition of sorts."

"Oh," Jake nodded, frowning as he stared down at the floor, as though he could see through it to the water that was apparently below them. In his mind, for just a moment, Jake wondered what was with the whole flooding thing... it wasn't exactly... normal.

Was it?

"Why the fifth floor?" he asked, head snapping back up. "Why not this floor?"

Huh? Huh?! HUH?!

Back to the matter at hand, though. "Won't know 'til we try, gotcha," Jake nodded, muttering the words as he mulled them over. "Might work... yeah," he agreed, deciding to trust this man. Yep, trust was what he needed to learn.

"Experrrdishun," Jake repeated what Truebridge said again. That was a cool word... one that Jake knew he had heard before, and he knew it... meant something pretty cool, too.

"I don't know. They aren't my chutes or ladders." Ethan pointed out mildly. "The longer the slide the more fun the ride though, even if the ladder to the top is a harder climb." chutes and ladders were made of philosophy too apparently.

"Good to hear it. But if it doesn't work, remember that doesn't mean you are failing it just means that it doesn't work, okay?" Truebridge told Jake, pleased to see the kid was thinking about it.

"Yes. An expedition. To climb rocks. Or maybe mountains. Whatever you feel brave enough to try really." There were some pretty awesome rocks to climb in Peru.

"Some people might seriously hate heights, and like, you could climb to the first floor and use steps, and I dunno... They could have had a kind of moving staircase deal, or like muggle elevators," the boy rambled on, not necessarily for any reason, he just tended to express what he thought.

Slightly confused by what Truebridge was saying, Jake just nodded anyway, his face showing slight confusion.

"Not my chutes, not my ladders." Ethan repeated. It was interesting certainly. It also meant he was effectively TRAPPED in the school. He wasn't planning on going anywhere near the fifth floor and Kazimeriz. Not that he would go anywhere near the Ancient Runes classroom in the first place.

He'd have to jump out the window on a broom or a carpet or something if he wanted to visit Annie and he would want to because she was certainly his friend and friends visited friends, did they not?

"Serious? I'm always serious." Really. Jokes were usually accidental.

"We should make a deal." Ethan ventured, taking a loaf of bread out of his desk and tearing each of the corners off of it.

"Of course... Abby took him to see Professor Morgan... I... can only assume that he's still there." Hmmm. Probably he should look into that. "He isn't really a puppy anymore, but chihuahuas aren't exactly big so... yeah. Puppyish." Hmm.

"Is he still nameless?" came Jake's next question, making a point to go down and visit said puppy soon. Hehe. Gave him an excuse to go down there and speak to Professor Morgan... even though he didn't need excuses to anymore.

"If you like the idea of going climbing... somewhere interesting, and you'd like me to arrange a trip during the summer, you have to do your best not to be expelled, and even more than that, try to figure out ways to control your anger." Ethan would do it too. He didn't back out when he gave his word.

"Yeah, still nameless. Iliana has a list somewhere... of names... I just haven't gotten around to chosing one and he seems pretty happy without a name." Ethan nibbled on the bread crusts, and soon enough had stripped all of the crust from the bread, which he placed aside and seemingly as an afterthought gestured at the bread. "You can have some bread if you like. Not the crusts though. I like crusts today." And only crusts.
