| | Herbology Lesson Two: Gillyweed The greenhouse was set up as usual, only with the black lab desks arranged in groups of four or five instead of in two long rows along the perimeter. There are no plants in the room for now, just the lab tables and the blackboard at the front by the professor's table. Professor Bunbury sits on a pink stool beside it, flipping through a thick, old-looking book as she waits for students to trickle in and take their seats. |

Anna glanced up at the blackboard and studied the map the professor was showing them. Raising her hand, she said, "The Mediterranean is not only the natural habitat for gillyweed, it's also the home to merpeople, the hippocampus, and the sea serpent." Were they going to be studying gillyweed today? Anna surely hoped so! Merlin only knew it'd be handy to have around the castle these days...

"Gillyweed, as most of you answered, is the most famous magical plant native to the Mediterranean." Bunbury smirked and slipped off her stool, dropping the heavy book on the table beside her as she moved around to behind the blackboard. She reappeared a moment later with a slightly damp, wriggly bag in her hand. Quote:

Raising his hand, he tried to redeem himself. TRIED. "Uhm.. magical water plants of the mediterranean.. they erm.. they - live in the sea? Like... seaweed?" Good one, Carden. "No, Carden, seaweed is actually not commonly found in the Mediterranean. Scrubby bushes and plants and such are much more prevalent." She shook her head at the boy and refrained from sighing. He was a seventh year who had shown some promise with the puffapods; why was he not intelligent regarding water plants? Quote:

Anastasia returned back to sit on her stool with the wriggly bag dangling from one hand. Thank Merlin the Head Girl had better answers than her male counterpart.
"Yes, Miss Greingoth, very good points. Very good. I would recommend asking Professor Morgan about the magical creatures you mentioned, since obviously a bit of the history of gillyweed involves them, or that.......that man who teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts if you're curious about grindylows and how they use gillyweed." Annie's face clouded at mention of Marcus but she changed the subject quickly.
Passing the slightly squirmy bag to her other hand, Bunbury asked the next question. "Now then, what are the magical properties of gillyweed? What does it look like and what does it do?"

Lucy smiled and raised her hand again to answer. "Well my mum told me that Gillyweed resembles a bundle of slimy, grey-green rat tails. And when it is consumed, one grows gills and webbing between the fingers and toes." She said.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Rickey Hampton Fifth Year | Cy opened that Herbology book of his, sifting through the table of contents. AHAH! ANd there it was, Cy's brown eyes locked on to it, and read a small snippet about it under the picture (because he was NOT going to read the full chapter. He really did hate reading...). "It looks downright dodgy, Professah." He said, grinning wryly. "A ball of slimy reeds." He said, "I'd like to throw it at Katie." He said under his breath grinning, as he looked at the page.
"Gives you breath undah' water for some amount of time... blah blah blah." He didn't feel like reading the whole definition aloud.

The looks of a Gillyweed... Grace wasn't sure about that part. She raised her hand. "It's green and sticky and... murky?" No, she was almost sure this part was wrong. But she knew the properties. "It almost transforms a human into a fish. It gives gill and it webs the hands and feet like a fish. It also gives a good vision underwater." |

| The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas. William put up his hand, "Gillyweed is a plant which can make you breath under water by giving you fish gills. It lasts for only an hour I think and is green and slimy and resembles weird rat-tails." He replied remembering seeing one once when he was in Diagon Alley. Gillyweed was cool he thought and it would definitely be good to keep a stash around in case of weirdness.

Cam thought for a minute and raised his hand to answer the question, "Well professah, the gillyweed looks like um..." He honestly didn't know how to describe the thing but gave it a try anyways, "it looks like a ball of mutated green alien worms and I think it turns you into some sort of an alienated fish." He nodded. Yupppp.

This wasn't going so well. Clifford couldn't swim.. he was downright AFRAID of water. He had enough of it with all these floods, he didn't need reminding of it in lesson too. Last lesson it had been those lilypads now gillyweed. Great.
He just hoped his fear of water didn't extend to waterplants.
One again, Clifford raised his hand. It was probably pointless. "Well, it looks ugly, ma'am. Sorta like worms. I don't think even I'd try eat that stuff.. and I eat like a pig," should he of admitted that? Eh. "anyway, so you eat it and you can breathe under the water, I think. Why anyone would do that..." voice trailing off, the seventh year wrinkled his nose.

It was massively popular, because people loved to grow stuff that weren't theirs to grown and go places that werent theirs to go. Bleh. Raising her hand, Evangeline replied rather halft-heartedly. "Gillyweed looks like ... rotten's tails. GREEN rats tails. And when eaten - though, really, who would want to eat that?.." Oh wait ... just answer, Evangeline. "Yeah, when eaten it makes the rather freaky phenomenon of people growing gills and webbing between the fingers and toes happen." |

Melanie raised her hand up nice and high, Ooooh she knew this one... "Like- like....Doesn't it look like seaweed? Or ...ahhh worms or somethin'?" she answered, her reply coming out as more of a question than an answer. "Ohh...and It makes you look like a fish sorta with gills and fins, cept' you still kept a human body...and helps you swim and breath underwater if you eat it." she added, nodding slightly as she finished, and looking hopefully up at the Professor. She couldn't help but look rather repulsed at the idea of consuming a plant though...especially one that looked like wormys. Icky. She really hoped they wouldn't be testing this one out...Water was SCARY. Even if she could swim...it was still scary. And the thought of growing gills and fins was almost even scarier.

Reese raised her hand. "When Gillyweed is eaten, the person who ate it grows gills and webbed fingers and toes. Um, the Gillyweed is just a bundle of slim with long roots," she explained. She wasn't sure if Professor Bunbury wanted her to talk about the Freshwater versus Saltwater or not, but she thought she would mention it anyways. "There's also a theory that Gillyweed lasts longer in freshwater than it does in saltwater," she continued on with her answer. With all that said, she lowered her hand.

"Gillyweed," she reached into the squirmy bag and held up a sample of the plant, "does in fact look like a bunch of tails packed together and thanks to its rather dense compaction, it usually manages to escape Muggle notice as it thrives on scrubby bushes found in the Mediterranean climate. Only after it is harvested does it start squirming.... but we'll go into that more in a minute."
She hopped off her stool again and moved toward the desks, pausing at each grouping to hand one student at the tables a ball of gillyweed. "Be careful with it now, it's expensive. Look at it, touch it, and then pass it on to the student sitting next to you so that everyone may observe the properties of gillyweed for themselves. DO NOT eat it, any one of you, just...observe. For now." Quote:

Whatever her name was, she must have been psychic because Bunbunz was about to mention that herself.
"Obviously gillyweed can have a variety of uses. Who can think of some interesting cases where it might come in handy - or some practical examples of times when gillyweed is helpful?"

Reese took the Gillyweed from Professor Bunbury and examined it. Was this stuff tasteful? Probably not. She tilted her head slightly and then passed the Gillyweed to the next student. She looked back up at Professor Bunbury when she asked another question. She raised her hand before she spoke. "It could be useful like now. Well, not right now, but right now," she answered. Did that EVEN made sense? She didn't think so. "I mean, the flood and everything. Gillyweed could be useful if someone got caught in the flood and couldn't get out," she explained.

"Well if your friend was trapped at the bottom of the lake, you could take it, to give you time to rescue them underwater," Aislynn said. "Just like good ol' Harry!" She laughed a bit. She thought the biography chapter on Harry Potter's experience on the Triwizard competition was always one of the most fascinating.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Rickey Hampton Fifth Year | As the professor said to explain a variety of uses, Cy’s mind started to spin a bit too fast. The kid obsessed over pirates, and most sorts of violent organizations. But mostly pirates, because they hunted treasure and burned things down. AND, they had parrots.
Basically, they were awesome.
So explain Cy did. “Ahh, Professah I know.” The brown-eyed Hufflepuff said, nodding in her direction. “Me’ friends back down undah’ used tah’ tell me about piraites. Liisten, listen. Someone would do something… bad. Then the captain would absolutely CHUCK a spaz and make him walk the plank. Sometimes with weights attached to his feet.” He paused for a moment and looked around the room methodically, for dramatic effect.
“SO! If he had gillyweed, he could just stuff that lil’ rippah’ in his mouth and swim back to the coast after taking the plunge. Genius eh?” Oh Cy was a genius, and he knew it.

| YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers Dominic had been sitting quietly during the foremost part of the lesson, but this was mostly due to the fact that he had gotten stuck sitting next to some annoying LOUD, RAMBUNCTIOUS firstie (yes, that's Cy! xD) who had found a 'home' on Willow's lap just a few weeks prior when they moved up to the seventh floor. So it was between getting a word in with him and just not wanting to speak mostly due to trying to figure out how to quiet the kid that had preventing Dominic from speaking thus far.
Eying the bag of gillyweed that started being passed around between the students, the sixth year bit his lip, deciding it time to speak. Maybe. Because he was sure there had to be some practical examples readily available in his mind. Oh bummer; Clifford beat him to the common room mention. Sighing, he raised his hand to think of another use.
"Well, gillyweed might also be useful if you're trying to concentrate on something and need to stifle the blabbering of others near you..." Dominic suggested thoughtfully. He sure wouldn't like having that shoved in his mouth. Wincing at just the very thought, he shook his head. "Yup. Getting people to be quiet." Seemed practical enough for him.
