| | Herbology Lesson One: Water Lilies As you stroll outside to go to Herbology class, you remember the awesome notice Professor Bunbury posted on your common room's board. Today's lesson is being held in the student gardens, that's right!
You amble over toward the small pond in the western section of the student gardens and right away you spy a lonely pink bench, sitting close to the edge of the pond. A few other ordinary benches have been dragged nearby and set up in rows facing the pond, enough so that threeish students would be able to share one.
Do have a seat and get some parchment ready for notes. The professor will be out shortly to start class. ooc: The map of the gardens is just a rough reference to remind you that you are outside. By the lil pond. Right there. =D |

Oooh, good question! Mariel raised her hand. "One is called floating," she said. "Those plants, uh... float." Yep, stating the obvious again. The other type failed her memory at the present moment. Best to give another student a chance to answer anyway.

Morteus picked up his quill and jotted down a few notes about the three categories of water plants: submerged, floating and marginal.
This was only the first lesson and Morteus was already utterly bamboozled by Herbology ... he was deeply considering finding a Ravenclaw willing to tutor him.
He then raised his hand slowly. "Marginal plants consist of mainly grasses, such as the Hardy Umbrella Grass, as well as some flowering plants, such as the Yellow Marsh Marigold. An example of a floating water plant is the Floating Water Moss."

"An example of a marginal plant would be that of the Water Hyacinth and an example of a floating plant would be the Mare's Tail." Reid said, his hand shooting up into the air. He was eager to get some more points for his house.

Cam raised his hand. "Examples of floating plants is the Giant salvinia which is a plant native to South America and I'm sure duckweeds are floating plants also. Marginal plants include the Black Magic Taro, which are plants that are shaped like hearts and another kind of a marginal plant is the Lemon Bacopa plant which smells... really really good." Ahhhh lemon-scented plants were just EPIC.

| Wowza! Willow had been very quiet throughout the entire lesson. Surprising? Not at all. This was Herbology, a subject that was about plants and how interesting they were. Oh, and pink. Lots of pink.
Personally, Willow thought this was all a pile of rubbish that got on her nerves.
But then, what didn't get on her nerves lately?
Either way, she raised her hand, "Aren't Water Buttons Marginal Plants, professor?" Willow was going to say ma'am, but something told her that pink Bunbury would not like that very much, and the last thing she wanted was to get on the loony's woman's bad side. Not right now anyway. "And the spatterdock," What a horrible name, "is a floating plant. Because, well, it floats." Duh. Way to go to state the obvious.
Whatever She should have dropped Herbology.

What? Was she supposed to have memorized the names of plants along with what types they were? Having only vaguely recognized a handful of the names being shouted out, Mariel knew there was no chance of yet two more plant names shelved somewhere in her brain. No, certainly not plants.
Stealthily pulling her textbook from her messenger bag, the third year casually turned the pages until she found the correct chapter. Water plants. Mmkay. Raising her hand, she chimed in with the group, "A marginal plant is cattail and a floating plant is..." she glanced back down at her book, "Water lettuce." Seriously?

As he jotted down what should be jotted down, Fyo's mind buzzed with odd names and odder pieces of information, all floating little pieces that made him want to bang his head in the nearest bench.
Floating and marginal plants?
Waiiit.. He knew those, YAY!
Calmly, the wide-eyed boy raised his hand. "The Bladderwort would be an example of a floating plant, professor," he said, trying not to sound as if he was struggling to bring the words out, and succeeding at it. "And the Equisetum Japonicum of marginal ones."
Know what?
This class was not his thing.

This class was not his thing.
- At all. "Correct, correct," Bunbury nodded at the students. "One point to each who answered....but let's get back to the water lilies now."
She turned toward the other side of the pond and took a big, albeit careful, step onto another lily pad.
"Like I said, I'm just standing on the leaves of the water lily right now. These leaves are very durable, obviously, and large...and thick... and they can support the weight of a human..."
Annie tapped her foot twice on the new lily pad with a thoughtful expression on her face. "But what else do you think they can be used for? What are some maybe practical and ingenious uses of a giant lily pad? Take some time and brainstorm, maybe in groups, because we might just test them out...." ooc: yeah sooo Imma head off and you all post away [DON'T CHATTER UNLESS IT RELATES TO CLASS] but come up with creative uses for the lily pad leaves. The giant leaves. The fun leaves. ;D

| ♥ Mrs. Itachi Uchiha™ & MAJNOO! : Bleach & Kyo & Natsume ♥ [ Maxh!Jesh ] Giant water lily pads? WhoaCOOLLL, dduuuuddde!
Fyo decided he might, just might, have to change his opinion about this class. Because, you know, giant-lily-pads-that-could-support-humans were just.. plain awesomeness.
His already wide eyes widened at Professor Bunbury's question. This was followed by their lighting up in their usual, dreamy sorta way - which, in turn, was followed by that, oh-so-thoughtful expression they sometimes assumed.
Giant lily pads. How could you use them? His mind wandered through its usual world of dreams and Neptunes, and shiny things and fuzziness, as he tried to think of something. And not just anything - something creative.
Waiittt.. He had it!
He raised his hand. "Professor, couldn’t we use them as construction material?” An odd use, yes, but a use, nevertheless. “I think a giant lily pad would make an awesome, hut roof – and it would be perfect if the place is hot or summery because, being a plant, it can keep the insides of the hut cool. It could also make some really exotic door and window curtains.”
Heyy.. He WANTED a giant lily pad-roof.

Cam watched in amazement as Bunzz--and the water lilies! It was just toooo awesome. He wanted to ride on one of these babies right awayyy. Maybe she'd let them, maybe she won't but he was... desperate perhaps? But of course, not too desperate to jump on one and then ride it across the pond. Nooo that would be PREPOSTEROUS. He raised his hand up high. "OOOOH! The giant lily pad could be useful for alootttta things like just relaxing and all. Maybe a teaaa party or just looking at the clouds, maybe," he said, "Maybe even gaaames such as hopscotch aaand... I heard it collects A LOT of sunlight so maaaybe even a tanning bed!" There were a lot of maybe's.

"Well since they seem sturdy and would naturally be able to handle water, being water plants and all we could maybe use them as a boat or a raft if ever we were stuck in a situation where we had no other material. They could also be used as a bridge to the other side of a river or something just like stepping stones and fallen logs are." Reid volunteered trying to think sensibly and realistically.

Celandine raised her hand. "Well, I think they'd be great as umbrellas professor. Or plates for giants with table manners. Or because it has an edge, you could use it to play dice games when you are stuck in the amazon with nothing better to do."

"If they can support a human's weight standing, doesn't that mean you should be able to hang from them? So if you're stuck on the bank of a river, you could tie them all together and swing across. Although, it would be much simpler to use them as stepping stones ...
I suppose you could tie them around your feet, and wear them as shoes, too. The leaves are fairly durable and should not wear down for a while."

Daniel raised his hand, "Professor, I think we can use those water lilies as floaties, that can be used for sunbathing in the middle of the lake. Or perhaps boats that we can use to travel to the different part of the lake." he said looking as if wanted to try the water lilies for himself.
