As you stroll outside to go to Herbology class, you remember the ~~awesome~~ notice Professor Bunbury posted on your common room's board. Today's lesson is being held in the student gardens, that's right!

You amble over toward the small pond in the western section of the student gardens and right away you spy a lonely pink bench, sitting close to the edge of the pond. A few other ordinary benches have been dragged nearby and set up in rows facing the pond, enough so that threeish students would be able to share one.

Do have a seat and get some parchment ready for notes. The professor will be out shortly to start class.

ooc: The map of the gardens is just a rough reference to remind you that you are outside. By the lil pond. Right there. =D

Abby Wright was really testing Anastasia Bunbury's patience just now, with one answer after the other after the other after the other after the other.

"Seeing as this is Herbology class and not History of Plants," Anastasia smirked at the thought, "I'll keep this brief. As your classmates stated, the lilies were were in fact named after the queen because I believe they were first discovered in the British colony of Guiana, now called Guyana, on the coast of South America, shortly after her crowning."

That small bit of history would do for now. "The Amazonica part, as your classmates also stated, is named for the river region where they were found and where I happened to find these. And yes, they were once also called Victoria regia and were a hot topic amongst British Muggle gardeners, none of which could figure out how to keep the lilies alive during our cooler seasons."

She tapped the lily pad she was standing on with her foot and suppressed a smirk. "No, Mr. Kolytiris, Victoria's Secret is not the answer." Not to this question, for once, although sometimes it was the answer to Annie's shopping sprees...

The redhead's eyes darted to Celandine Toussaint and she shook her head once, as if to signal that this was not a topic a Pink Lady would be rambling about in class. AHEM.

Bunbury coughed to get their attention and continued the lecture. "Back on topic. Now then, what about the flowers of the Victoria cruziana? Because I'm just standing on a leaf, see, so what can you all tell me about its beautiful flowers?"

Reid looked over at the girl and blinked slightly. How could she not know what Victoria's secret was?? Like she was a girl so she should know. "Victoria's secret is a muggle fashion design. A lot of their stuff is lengiere." he said slowly and clearly, still in shock that the girl didn't know what it was. And even more shocked that the guy had thought that a lily named after an ancient queen could possibly be named after a fashion house started after the lilies discovery.

"VICTORIA'S SECRET is that ALL of you are going to be sitting pretty in DETENTION CELLS if you don't stop chatting!" Anastasia snapped suddenly.

"Lily pads! We are discussing lily pads, children, not....not Muggle fashions! See me in my office if wish to continue that thread of discussion!"

She took a deep breath and restated her question. "Victoria amazonica. Flowers. Anyone? Annnnyone at alll?"

Copernicus's hand shot into the air so he wouldn't GLARE at Tino. "The flowers open at night, Professor. They are white on the first evening they open, then pink the next." He paused, wondering if that was right. How could the flowers just up and change colors like that?

"The Victoria Cruziana is again named after Queen Victoria. It is part of the Nymphaeaceae family, meaning that it's related to the Victoria Amazonia. The flowers only open at dusk and the underside of the leaves are covered in a peachlike fuzz. Oh yes and they were found in the Parana-Paraguay basin." Reid said while putting his hand up, reciting nearly everything he knew about the plant and trying to get back into the Professors good books.

Tino cringed at the volume of the professor's voice. Oooooo. Bun-bun was getting even madder! OH WHY MUST HE ALWAYS SAY THE WRONG THING?? Curse Victoria and all her secrets.

"They open up at nightfall?" Tino asked in a tiny voice, awed by his own bravery.

He shot a scared look at Cela. If Cela knew the Secret, he must avoid her at all costs.

And she was mad again. She was so cute when she was mad. He raised his hand and said, "The flowers are white on the first night that they open and become pink after that." He nodded. "They can reach 40 cm diameter and are pollinated by scarab beetles." Man, he was gad he read up on these things.

Plymouth ... guh. He was SOOO enthralled with the FLOWERS. The lilies. The floating discs BEGGING him to sit on and paddle around the pond in. His CellBell was on about Secrets... and where Plymouth loved secrets, too, he just couldn't muster enough focus to comment on it.

Instead he raised his hand, "Professor... Can I have one?" Plymouth gave her the big, puppy eyes. " I bet the flowers are soooooo pretty. Pink, right?" Or rather, "PINK. They're kind of big, huh? I LIKE them, Professor Bunz!!"

Because Plymouth approval of plants was an absolute necessary.

Mariel merely shrugged at the older boy who thought it fit to inform her all about Victoria's secret. Really? that was the secret? She knew quite little about Muggles - including fashion... and lingerie? yeah. Maybe they'd learn more about that in Muggle Studies... orrrr not.

She jumped slightly as Professor Bunbury then raised her voice at her. Back on topic. Right. Nodding at Cela as she hoped in her curiosity that she would show her later, the third year turned back to stare at the lillies, thinking about the flowers and the chapter she read in the textbook the night before. Ummm, people were answering quick and taking all her answers. Eeep! What else?

Thinking quickly, she raised her hand and said, "The flowers are pollinated by scarab beetles." Weird.

Morteus realized that he was a little slow, but still raised his hand to answer the professor's question.

If it's growing in a colder climate, the pink in both species is lighter and with the Victoria Cruziana, the pink might even be interspersed with white." "Yes, yes, everyone's correct," Bunbury let out a little puff of air and calmed down as the class participated. Good. Participation was good. "You should probably be writing this down. When the flowers open, now, keep mind this is only at night and you'll have to wait later this term to see them," hint hint, "when they do open, they're about as large as a quaffle. Bunbury raised an eyebrow at the class and then realized, that mistakenly, not that she would ever admit it, she had brought up a second variety of the exotic water lilies. Shoooooot her words had slipped. Darn....distracting....fashion topic...!!!1!

"Ah yes, the victoria cruziana," Anastasia sighed. "They're a related variety, although not as large as the victoria amazonia. Before Morteus could stop to think, his hand automatically shot up into the air.

"Professor, I have a question. This must sound very stupid, but I couldn't find anything in my textbook on it." Morteus paused for a moment, pondering over how he was going to word the question.

"How do water lilies obtain their nutrients from the water? They don't have roots or anything. And do lilies have any magical healing properties?"

"Yes, Celandine, I'm glad you asked that. You can use a few spells here and there on the plant and obviously, depending on the potions you dump into the pond...."

She tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I wouldn't recommend experimenting with spells too too much though, even to make the blooms last longer. Upsetting the balance of the plant's normal life cycle could have long-term effects on the balance of the rest of the pond ecosystem, especially if the water lilies are well-established there. If you just pluck the flower though, that would be easier to preserve."

Alright, something not found in the textbook. How dare it fail. Tututt.

"Actually, Morteus," Bunbury smirked to herself, "water lilies do have roots, just not ordinary ones in the way you might think a tree has, for example. These have to be anchored into the earth to support my weight, now don't they?"

She tapped one boot for emphasis. "I'm just now standing on one leaf of a water lily, the actual real planty-part is submerged underneath, you see. And some are used in potions and pastes for healing, yes. Some even had their roots mashed and applied to reduce swelling; I believe a few tribes native to South America ah, found they had anaphrodisiac properties."

That most definitely was another matter, however. "But to continue on, some of you seem confused about water lilies. As I mentioned, the only real visible part of the plant are their leaves and flowers. In fact, water lilies fall into the submerged category of water plants. What are the three categories of typical water garden plants -- or two, I should say, what are the other two besides submerged?"
