| | Herbology Final Professor Bunbury led the way into Greenhouse One, flicked on the lights and then took her usual perch on the pink stool by the blackboard. She'd decided to have a bit of a question and answer session before handing out the final exam, just to see if students' brains needed a spot of refreshing and also to anticipate how well they would do on the exam. ooc: so this will be a bit of a free-for-all third lesson as well as your final opportunity to earn points. =) |

| The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas. William stood up, stretching before wandering over to the blackboard and picking up a piece of chalk. In his rather sloppy writing he wrote Quote:
The water lily can be cross-bred with a variety of other plants.
Ok, it wasn't his best but he wasn't at his best right now.

Ooh! Yayyyy... brainstorming time. Brainstorming ideas and things they had already learned. Fun fun. Livvy skipped over to the board and grabbed a piece of chalk. In neat handwriting she wrote... Quote:
The Victoria amazonica water lily was first discovered in the British colony of Guiana, now known as Guyana, on the coast of South America; after the crowning of Queen Victoria.

After this she wrote her little fact on the board. Quote:

Melanie watched as Bunbury became animated, smiling slightly until the point where she said 'exams'. Meh, the word sounded rather scary... she hoped they weren't too difficult...
OoOhh! They got to write on the blackboard!! Perhaps she was a bit too excited than she should be at the fact... but she liked to write on the blackboard when they got a chance at her old muggle school and obviously hadn't been allowed the opportunity in a while
The second year walked eagerly to the blackboard when she got a chance, a bounce in her step. She picked up a piece of chalk, some of the residue coming off on her palm, and wrote her fact as neatly as she could across one of the lines on the board. Quote:
When the flowers first open their about as large as a quaffle.
With that, Melanie returned to her seat, satisfied with her fact, wiping her chalky hand off on her robes. Ick.

Too scared to go first, Wesley waited. She wanted to go in the middle, not first, not last, just so she wouldn't stand out. But, nervous to go up and write something in front of Professor Bunbury, she kept on trying to drag it out as long as possible, after her, then I'll go. Oh, wait, here comes another person, I think I'll go after them. Wait, no, guess I'll have to go next...
Unfortunately, she waited so long that it appeared she was the last one.
Wesley didn't want to be the last person. She didn't want to have everyone watching her. A part of her considered just not going, but that would probably make the teacher mad. Something she did NOT want to happen.
So, at last, sweating and pale white, Wesley scurried over to the chalkboard, and tried to think of something to say. Deep anxiety twisted her stomach as she saw all of the ones she was going to use had been done. Now she was just standing there looking like an absolute fool. Everybody's looking at me. But I can't think of anything to write. If I go back to my seat, they'll all laugh. They'll hate me. I don't want them to hate me. Oh- I feel so trapped! Trapped, imprisoned, no way to-THAT'S IT!
Suddenly hit by inspiration, Wesley wrote, chalk scratching on the board, Quote:
At night the pollinator lands on the white flower and the flower traps it. The bug does the pollinating during the day and then, the next night, flies away from the now pink flower to another white one.
Briefly proofreading what she had written, Wesley bit her lip, hoping it was okay. Quickly walking back, she took her seat and began copying the answers onto her notes. From what it sounded like, she wouldn't have anytime to study them before the final, but maybe if she wrote them down they would stick in her head better.
In the back of her head, she hoped maybe someone would go after her, then she wouldn't have to be the last one.

She smiled back at Aaron as he sat on the other side of her. She could tell he was nervous, his smile told her straight away. His nerves were practacally radiating off of him too.
Iris looked at the list that every one was writing on the blackboard... She didn't remember half of it. She sighed as she racked her brain for something that she could remember that wasn't already there but with little luck.

She turned her head slightly when the last student sat down from the bored and stared down the few who had decided not to answer.
Perhaps they had learned nothing this term? Tsk. Tsk.
"Well then, that could be worth something useful in your final," she hinted, swirling her wand in two small circles at the chalkboard. It lit up and the answers everyone had written turned a bright pink color, as if they were glowing, before they all disappeared.
"Moving on." Bunbury smoothed out her robes and glanced at the class again. "Gillyweed was heavily emphasized this term, and obviously it was useful in the feud between the merfolk." She rolled her eyes, because obviously nothing else needed to be said about those meddlesome fish. "But what is a situation in which gillyweed would NOT be helpful?"
Small, individual blackboards appeared in front each student now. "Describe a situation where gillyweed would hinder rather than help you, and why."

Gillyweed? A situation where it WOULDN'T be proven helpful? Now what kind of a question was that? Cam didn't understand, he couldn't really think up of any situationw where it wouldn't prove to be helpful. Well, any situation that didn't deal with water... OOOH. Well, duuhhhh, there was the point of using gillyweed on land, right?
He started with the writing on his blackboard. Quote:
Gillyweed wouldn't prove to be ANY helpful at all and would be a completely useless if used on land. It would only suffocate you from lack of water, considering you grow gills, and eventually you'd die. Die. Another situation is when using gillyweed for... exploring the deep sea. It only lasts for an hour and you always don't have a watch with you, so you could possibly drown if you're not careful. There are also other situations where you really could just waste your gillyweed, like... using gillyweed in your bathtub! You'd be all cramped and all and you'd have to wait for an hour until the effects finally wear off, it'll just waste your time, really.
Oh his answer was so lame. He wasn't even sure if it would answer Bunzz's question.

Chris thought for a moment and then took his individual chalkboard and began to write his answer. Quote: Chris's ChalkboardA situation in which Gillyweed would hinder you rather than help would be, if perhaps you took too muchand then have to stay in the water an extremely long time waiting for the effects to wear off.
He smiled as he waited to see if his answer was correct.

Happy that Professor Bunbury hadn't yelled at her, Wesley nervously anticipated the next question.
And it was about Gilly Weed.
Gilly Weed? Had they even covered that in class? Wesley couldn't remember. Oh dear. She was in big trouble now. The Hufflepuff had absolutely no idea how to answer the question, but she figured she had better come up with something. Fast. Okay. Okay. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. Now think. If I can figure out what it does, then I just have to think of some way it won't work. So, ummm...it lets you breath underwater and you get, like fins or something. Right. Now, lets think, when do you not want to have fins? Ummmm...sharp rocks might rip them, that would be bad or, or, oh! uhhhh, maybe if you're swimming in toxic water, you don't want to breath that in! Errr...I don't know, ummm...ummmm...nope. nothing
Out of ideas, Wesley began to write down what she had been able to come up with. Although she tried her hardest to print neatly, the chalk kept on breaking and her hand shook. Quote:
Gillyweed would not be helpful if you are swimming in rocky waters, because they might rip at your fins, and if the current is strong, you will be pulled down until the effects run out and you drown. Also, it wouldn't be good to use it in toxic water, because the plant gives you gills so you can breath in the water and turn it into oxygen. But if the water is bad, then you'll be breathing in unhealthy and dangerous water which could kill you.
Not exactly satisfied, Wesley placed the tablet down, and began to chew on her bottom lip. She hoped it would at least pass.

Oh, shoot.
Of course Anna had been daydreaming about graduation...summertime...Cale...wedding plans...etc., etc., and she'd missed the first question. Great. Lovely. Now she'd be behind on a tiny portion of her final. That couldn't cause her to fail, could it?!?! Eyes wide with fear, Anna retrieved a piece of chalk and wrote the following on the little chalkboard that had appeared in front of her: Quote:
Gillyweed would not be helpful in any area that is without water. Deserts, for example, are large areas of land that lack appropriate amounts of water. Consuming gillyweed in the middle of the hot, dry desert wouldn't be a very wise decision at all. I mean, how in Merlin's name would gills and webbed hands and feet help you there? You definitely need to be close by water anytime you consume gillyweed.

Ingenious question there, but also highly tricky. Fyo frowned slightly, wondering what he could possibly have to say in response to that one. The first thought that came to his mind was "use on land," but he was pretty sure plenty of other students would think the same.
Different. Original. - That's what he wanted.
......
He was such an EPIC fail.
He reached for the blackboard, shaking his head as he did so. He would have liked more time to think - perhaps a bit of chocolate frog to go along with this - but, since that was not possible, here went his tryTry. Quote: Gillyweed would hinder one if the water is too shallow. Once it has been consumed, a person needs to breathe underwater to survive but, if the water turns out to be too shallow - say, only knee-deep - then gillyweed would be of no use: it's going to be your death, not your life then, because you won't be able to breathe above the water, and if you bend your back to stick your head in the water, you won't be able to swim forward in such a position. Yup, it's going to be mighty uncomfortable, having to wait like that, until the effects of the plant wear off. Um.... |

Daniel walked up to the board and wrote the thing that first struck his mind. Quote:
Gillyweed wouldn't be useful to swimmers the need less that the specified time underwater.
He then sat and looked at his answer. He wasn't sure of the correctness of the answer and he wanted to sink in his chair if it isn't correct.

Satine was speechless, well really thoughtless, for the first time in her life. She stared at her blank chalkboard with an odd face. It was almost like she thought that if she scrunched up her face enough, an idea would come to her. She wanted one that was creative and not obvious...like out of water, or on land, or something like...
She looked up at the roof and thought hard about the class lesson and what they had learned about gillyweed and then she thought about her times trying gillyweed.
Finally something came to her, but she wasn't sure if either idea was right but it was much better than having a blank board...she looked at her purple chalk and began scribbling in her pretty handwriting... Quote: Idea One:
If you are going into the water within thirty minutes of eating...It's an old myth that if you go swimming within thirty minutes that you might have a cramp...so thus if you take gillyweed right after you eat then it's not a good idea to go swimming for atleast thirty minutes....but then you have lost it's potency....
*Maybe she'd get points for creativity on the first one, even if it was a stretch.* Idea Two:
It wouldn't be a wise decision to use gillyweed in extrememly cold water. You would still get the webbed fingers and toes and the gills, but gillyweed alone does not help with your body temperature.
*It made sense to Satine and it made her board not blank*
She looked down at her answers and hoped at least one was creative enough that the Professor might like it.

She liked to see the students thinking on their own for once, and of course the best answers were always the ones that thought outside the box.
"Now then." Bunbury summoned the mini-boards to the desk by her stool and they neatly stacked into a pile for her to look at later. "What are some of the key facts and differences you learned about cuscuta?"
That plant had been important in learning about gillyweed too, as confusing as the two were. "You may come up to the big chalkboard here and write down an answer, just one each; and again, try to avoid repeating each other."
She reached over and turned the blackboard to its other side - because although the answers from the first question had disappeared, they were still stored there. "Go on."

Well.. even though they had done an entire lesson on cuscuta, Livvy's mind still went blank as she thought of a key point or some sort of difference.. or ANYTHING. Ah. There was one thing. It was hardly anything... but it was still a fact, nonetheless.
So Livvy skipped towards the biiiiiggg board and picked up a piece of chalk as she began writing the fact she had just thought of. Quote:

The fifth year suddenly pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill from her book bag, setting it down on the table. She was ready to take some notes. Livvy scribbled down some of the answers to the questions that were asked previously, that she could remember.

Oh yes, Dominic was definitely caught in a minor daze that he missed the first two questions ... not his fault though that summer was just around the corner and a certain captain was on his mind that he hadn't seen since the championships, when she hadn't -with good reason- been in the mood to talk much to him. Sigh. Besides, he at least still had another year to catch up on where he lacked in Herbology this term before taking the NEWTs.
Oh. They were coming up to the big chalkboard for this question? Standing and following a younger Gryffindor boy up the board, he wrote in the chalk carefully: Quote:
Dormant cuscata oxygenium is useful in some potions, primarily love potions.
And then stood back to reread what he wrote. Too little? Maybe.
