Lucy took out some parchment and a quill with her favorite colored ink. At the top of the parchment she wrote:

Quote:

Ancient Runes: Fehu

As she waited for the ink to dry, Lucy raised her hand to answer the professors question. "The in the first letter of the Elder Futhark, is F, or to go by its ancient runes name, Fehu."

Too late for that now. Hmm, first letter? Raising her hand, she bit her lip hesitantly before shrugging a little and saying what she thought. "Is it F, miss? Or Fehu, as the letter is properly called in the Elder Futhark terminology," the fifth year said, lowering her hand into her bag as she finished taking everything out.

Deciding that the best idea would be to actually answer said question,Sarah flicked through her textbook and put her hand in the air. "It's F Professor.Or to give it it's proper ancient runes name...Fehu." Satisfied that she'd done something of note, even though most of the class already had,Sarah started staring at the red box again.Shaking her head, she grabbed it and stuffed it inside bag....for later.

Dani raised her hand tentatively. "Because Fehu is related to food?" She liked food. She liked it a lot.

Golden Monkey 06-12-2009 07:50 PM

William opened the box before him and grinned as he tok out the treat. He could already smell the peppermint and he stuffed it into his mouth, chewing quickly. his eyes closed and his mouth watered for more as he swallowed before raising his hand. "Well the meaning of Fehu mean wealth, cattle, sheep, but i guess we're going with wealth here since there's no barn to keep the sheep or cattle. So I guess it could mean more than one? I mean, wealth is a lot of money so if you only have one of something it's not really wealth is it?" He frowned in his chair, blue eyes squinting. "but it's also related to food, hence the sheep/cattle parts." he stopped before frowning once more and looking around.

RachieRu 06-12-2009 07:52 PM

Vanessa thought for a few seconds before raising her hand. "Could it be how Fehu warns you to take care of the physical things in our lives, and as we eat the sweety we lose something physical...which is then replaced?" She spoke, not really knwoing if she was making sense, knowing her she probably wasn't.

Thomas raised his hand and said," I think it is related Fehu because Fehu means to earn something and now we earned peppermint from you."

Rachel blinked. Ok, huh?! Her hand froze over the piece of parchment on which she was writing notes as she tried to fathom what on earth the answer was here. Suddenly Jake's voice floated into her mind and said, "If you don't know, make it up. At least it looks like you're trying."

Smiling slightly, although worried as well, the fifth year hesitated once again before raising her hand. "Well Professor we know that Fehu is related to wealth and domestic cattle. If we focus on the cattle part then we see that it is somehow connected to food, since cattle in the olden days was a common source of nurishment. And also, I don't know how relevant this is, but food also starts with the letter 'F', which is the modern equivalent of Fehu. This might be a coincidence, but I've sort of learned that very few things are..." Rachel said, impressing herself with how much she actually knew. What do you know - maybe I'll even be a little right...

MarcyMoo 06-12-2009 08:05 PM

Lucy was a bit confused by the Professors question, so decided to let the other students answer the question, rather than making a fool of herself. Instead she wrote down what was on the board.

Ancient Runes. Another lesson Grace looked forward to. As she knew almost four languages this lesson wouldn't be hard, would it? She hoped so.

Well, at least she was hoping so. But with the first question, all her hopes were crushed down. She didn't know! She was about to cry. Why hadn't she studied anyway? Of course teachers'd ask questions, they were teachers for that reason. Luckily, many students had answered. So she didn't need to, right?

But the answered-students talked about this "fehu". 'Whaat?' Grace wanted to yell them. "Yes, I'm a pencil." she whispered. 'Next time you super-genious, come prepared!' the know-it-all voice told her. Yeah, that'd be probably wise.

With the second question, she was puzzled more. 'Because it's casted.' wasn't obviously the answer. Time to sweep under the table...

MerriMalfoy 06-12-2009 08:28 PM

Miranda finally gave in and ate her peppermint. Mmmmmmm. Still chewing, she raised her hand.

"Is it because it's a wealth of peppermint, at least until it runs out, and it stands for wealth? Or does it have to do with the cattle/food connection?"

She licks her lips, thinking she'd much rather have peppermint than cattle.

Rosa Chispa Princessa 06-12-2009 08:29 PM

Herminny raised her hand and said, "I think what the box represents is wealth which is is Fehu, but in a way if one person has more then their share another person is bound to have less, which I think is trying to say use you're resources wisely so everyone has enough and no one has too much or too little", that sounded right to her, she hoped she was right.

She quickly grabbed the Peppermint frog & gulped it down her throat..So far so good. As soon as she ate the frog, a new sweet showed up...
After her yummy experiment, Sydney flipped through the pages of her book.. Before raising her hand, Sydney decided to write the answer [which is definitely wrong] on her parchment...."Fehu means Wealth but it's original meaning is Cattle. So.... cattle = food & the peppermint frog is err a food??" Sydney bit her lower lip... "better stay quiet but I'm trying" She thought.

Abby raises her hand. "Fehu means abundance. The ruin is associated with with real material wealth and nourishment in the metaphysical sense. Fehu symbolizes two branches or the horns from a cattle. It also literally means cattle which was used as a symbol of wealth in nomadic times" Abby eats her chocolate. It was very good and minty.

Cassirin 06-12-2009 09:29 PM

Copernicus wrote down some of the answers from his classmates before raising his hand. Really, they had all covered it, but it helped him to put things into perspective. "Also, Professor, Fehu is about abundance, and you have an abundance of candy to share. Wealth is worth nothing sitting in a box in your office; you have to give it away. So out of your abundance of candy comes a portion for each of us." Hm. Was that right?

Miles took it and quickly popped it into his mouth, before realizing that another one had appeared. "Awesome! These are cool, professor." As he listened about Fehu, how could it be related to the box. "Well, it means wealth. And I guess sweets are wealthy to us." Miles laughed at this silly thought, but it could always be right.

So did the class as it begun. It seems today's lesson would be on the rune of Fehu, which was known to be, in short, the rune of wealth. Her classmates were of the bright sort and had already covered most of the runes' bases. Although, Copernicus Kettleburn, in pure Kettleburn fashion seemed to have wrangled a last clever answer.

Sharing wealth. That was honorable. Ahh. Daphne scratch an itchy spot on forehead with the end of her quill. Yes, truly Kettleburn fashion.

In truth, Fehu did mean wealth but it also was meant to remind others to be charitable. If you were to give what you had in good spirit you in turn would become stronger, spiritually of course. Scribbling down everyone's answer, Daphne punished her lip severely for being a bit stiff. She could have at least tried to get an answer in.

Nabs 06-12-2009 10:19 PM

Garret didn't know what the connection between this Fehu thingamajigum and the peppermint sweets was, but he didn't care. The only thing he knew about this rune was that his mum had cried when the rune came up just before Willie was born. The abundance thing the other students were throwing out made sense though, of course his mum had cried at the thought of having more boys.

Lislchen 06-12-2009 10:27 PM

Yeah, right, Nancy so knew the answer to that question. Not. How was she to know? As she pretended to listen to the others' replies the 14 year old absentmindedly poked the little red box in front of her with the tip of her quill. Peppermint? Nancy grabbed the little sweet and turned in between her fingers a few times before examining it more closely. It smelled rather strangely, causing Nancy to wrinkle her nose slightly and to carefully place the sweet back into the box. But wait, there was already a peppermint-thingy in there. No! More peppermint-thingies?! What was she supposed to do with them?

Zeke Weasley 06-12-2009 11:51 PM

Zeke raised his hand. "Well, Professor," he began, "according to the Anglo-Saxon Rune poem, 'Wealth is a comfort to all men; yet must every man bestow it freely, if he wish to gain honour in the sight of the Lord.' That makes me think that maybe wealth - the candy, in this case - is something we all want, but you have to give it away in order for it to really be worth anything?" He chewed his lip for a moment. "Maybe it's like what good does the wealth do if it just sits there? It has to be used or given away in some form, or it's not really worth anything in the long run." He didn't know if that made sense - it hardly did to himself - but he hoped Professor Lupa would understand what he was trying to say.

PadfootAndTheWolf 06-13-2009 12:30 AM

Chris looked at his sweets box and thought of the connection with Fehu. "Well Professor, the sign for Fehu is a cattle, which represents weath, right? Wealh doesnt just have to be based on money. Wealth in order times could be abundent in food. Which cattle may also represent that. So you have an abundance of candy, so I guess you are wealthy with candy." he said smiling.

TeafortheSoul 06-13-2009 12:54 AM

Cela raised her hand, "Well, apart from the abundance thing, Fehu also symbolises generosity, and you are totally generous with the candy, professor." Cela pointed out, "It also symbolises nourishment and reward and candy totally gets MY brain going and I find it VERY rewarding, Professor Lupa." Cel turned to beam at Daphne and offered a little, slightly half-hearted but still noticeable air nuzzle for Plym.

Wenzlebug 06-13-2009 01:48 AM

Cedric raised his hand."Cause the rune of Fehu symbolizes wealth, money and cattle. And as you said professor, that if we want more, another candy will appear and the other meaning of Fehu is wealth is comfort to all and everyone can bestow it freely if they want to take a sight of it again."

"Yes. A little long winded Miss , but correct."

"Also, Professor, Fehu is about abundance, and you have an abundance of candy to share. Wealth is worth nothing sitting in a box in your office; you have to give it away. So out of your abundance of candy comes a portion for each of us." Hm. Was that right?

"Yes Master Kettleburn, you and Miss Wright are correct. Class did you all hear Master Kettleburn's answer? Fehu is about abundance, wealth is worth nothing if it is not shared." She said proudly.

"Master Parker," she said with a smile, "I have a wealth of sweeties and I wish to share."

That makes me think that maybe wealth - the candy, in this case - is something we all want, but you have to give it away in order for it to really be worth anything?" He chewed his lip for a moment. "Maybe it's like what good does the wealth do if it just sits there? It has to be used or given away in some form, or it's not really worth anything in the long run." He didn't know if that made sense - it hardly did to himself - but he hoped Professor Lupa would understand what he was trying to say.

"Master Weasley you are correct in a way." She said with a smile. "And thank you for quoting the poem."

Wealth in order times could be abundent in food. Which cattle may also represent that. So you have an abundance of candy, so I guess you are wealthy with candy." he said smiling.

"Yes correct Master Potter, very good." Alessia was very happy about her students.

Cel turned to beam at Daphne and offered a little, slightly half-hearted but still noticeable air nuzzle for Plym.

"Very VERY good Miss Toussaint. Generosity." Her kids were doing great with runes!

"So we've determined that Fehu is cattle... Having Cattle meant you were wealthy, so Fehu means wealth... being wealthy means abundance therefor, fehu means abundance... Fehu also means generosity... name ONE more thing Fehu mean?"

"Yes but the question was why is the sweety coming back, Master Leone."
