Walking into the arithmancy classroom with his now blue, bunny slippers on, he hopes the professor doesn't get upset with him. He had sent for shoes, but they hadn't arrived yet. And he had to throw the ones covered in blood away.

"Hello professor." he says with a smile, before he heads toward a seat in the middle of the room.

Reid looked up upon hearing someone addressing him. It was the girl who he's been partnered with in History of Magic. Now what was she asking? Oh obviously if she could sit next to him. Or at least he guessed that that was what she asked as she had just commandeered the seat anyway. "Sure. It's Rachel right?" he asked, trying to make sure that he had remembered her name correctly. There were so many new names to remember that he wanted to make sure he hadn't gotten her mixed up with anybody. She was looking at him in a questioning way, a look Reid sent right back at her.

Professor Shackleton shrugged playfully, "Hello Elizabeth. As if there wasn't already enough on my mind, I now have plenty more to contemplate! So yes, a LOT is on my mind," she chuckled lightly.

Professor Shackleton glanced down at her ring once more as a blush rose to her cheeks, "Thank you both very much for noticing and saying so. I'm rather fond of it myself."

Professor Shackleton fought back a grin as Plymouth made his grand (and rather loud) entrance into the classroom. Picking up the apple he had just placed on her desk, Macadrian's eyes narrowed jokingly as she inquired, "Now Plymouth, you're not trying to poison your professor are you? The Headmaster would not be pleased if he needed to restaff the Arithmancy post so quickly after the start of the year. At least refrain from poisoning me til after the winter holidays and give the poor man a break," she joked with a wink.

Professor Shackleton giggled softly, "I wouldn't want to do that! You'll need your eyes for all the notes you'll need to take in my class. I'll do my best to keep the ring out of the light!"


To the rest of the students who had politely greeted her, Professor Shackleton returned the greeting. Once it appeared everyone was settled, Professor Shackleton stood from her chair to signal that the class was beginning. She cleared her throat and began, "Good afternoon class. Welcome to the first lesson of Advanced Arithmancy. I hope you all picked up the textbook in Diagon Alley because you will most definitely need it this term! The focus of study for this term will be the Core and its Companion Numbers. Now, today's lesson should really be a review and will move fairly quickly. We are going to do a cursory overview of the Core. Anyone wishing to review the Core in more detail after the lesson may certainly stop by my office or perhaps form a study group with several of your classmates. I would allow you the usage of either this classroom or the classroom set-up for OWL and NEWT preparations."

Grabbing a large back of jelly slugs from her desk drawer, Shackleton made her usual stroll to the front of her desk, where she perched on the edge. "Now, with that said, will someone please name the four Core Numbers? I want just the names, no details about them just yet, please."

"I believe that the names of the four core numbers are the personality core, life path number core, the hearts desire core, which is also known as the soul urge and the destiny core." Reid stated, raising his hand as he did so. He really hoped he was correct so that he could earn some points for Slytherin.

Paris raised her hand, "Is it your destiny number, your life path number, the Soul Urge Number, and Personality Number," she offered. She had no idea if she were right, but she was going to try.

"Very good. Very good. You both are correct. I'm glad to see you remember." Professor Shackleton gave them both a proud smile and tossed them each a jelly slug before addressing the class.

"As your classmates have said, the four numbers of the Core are the Life Path Number, the Expression/Destiny Number, the Heart's Desire/Soul Urge Number, and the Personality Number. The Core Numbers are the most significant numbers in anyone's Arithmancy profile. They are four points of light, four energies that make up your unique vibrational pattern, four numbers that tell a major part of your own personal story."

Shackleton bit into a jelly slug, chewed and swallowed, before proceeding, "Let's begin with the Life Path Number, shall we? What does the Life Path Number tell us about ourselves?"

Deftly catching the Jelly Slug Reid paused to think a minute before raising his hand. "The life path number tells us where we will go in life, what road we will take and what circumstances or opportunities in our lives will put us on that road. While people can have the same life path number that doesn't mean that they will necessarily have the same path in life." Reid stated, hoping he didn't sound too like a textbook.

She caught the jelly slug and bit into it. She chewed as she raised her hand, "The Life Path Number tells you wish path your life is going to take and then it gives you like a inventory list of the of the abilities and talents that you will need as you travel on this path. You may share the same life path number with someone else, but its the combination of all of your numbers that will define how you need to travel your life path." Paris said totally shocking herself at how much she was remembering.

Abby raises her hand. "The Life Path Number tells about what talents and abilities we possess. It also tells us what road we will follow throughout life. The talents and abilities it tell us about will help us travel down this road, so we can find success in our lives."

Professor Shackleton couldn't have been more pleased with the amount of information her students had recalled with ease. "All three of you are precisely correct. You make your houses proud!" Since Reid and Paris had already received and had not yet finished eating their Jelly Slugs, Macadrian simply tossed one to Abby, before inquiring of the class, "And how do we calculate the Life Path Number?"

Finishing off his Jelly Slug Reid raised his hand and said, "We calculate the life path number by adding together the month, day and year we were born using the addition method of reducing before adding together."

Paris raised her hand again. "You have to add together the month, day, and year of your birth using the addition method of reducing first, then adding them together." She explained.

"You two are doing outstanding today! House points for Slytherin! And another Jelly Slug apiece!" Shackleton tossed one behind her back to Paris and the other under her leg to Reid.

"So, your Life Path Number shows you which road to follow and is revealed by your birth date. It tells you want you can depend upon to find success in the world. This is one place to look for your career and vocational options because, as your classmates mentioned, it shows your inherent abilities and talents, which you will need to use on the road you'll follow throughout life. As mentioned, the steps for calculating the Life Path Number are,"

With a flick of her wand, a piece of chalk began writing on the blackboard:

1. Find the number of your birth month.

2. If your birth day is a double-digit number, reduce it to a single number. (Ex. 22 is reduced to 2+2=4)

3. Add the year numbers together to get a single number. (ex. 2015 is reduced to 2+0+1+5=8)

4. Add all three reduced numbers for the month, day, and year together.

5. Reduce the final double-digit numbers (unless it is a Master Number 11, 22, or 33). The final single-digit number is the Life Path Number. (If you get a Master Number as the double-digit sum, write the number as 11/2, 22/4, or 33/6.)

"Please feel free to use this time to calculate your own Life Path Number. Once you've gotten a number, refer to the textbook for an explanation. Then, decide how much of it applies to you now or may apply to you in the future. Determine how it makes you feel - optimistic? curious? frightened? Please write an analysis of how that number applies to your life and try to be specific whenever possible."

Aww, she wanted a Jelly Slug. AND house points. Pay attention!

What was Shackleton on? She seemed to be even happier than normal, throwing the slugs around like that. My goodness, she was in a FANTASTIC mood.

"Dang Professor, gettin' jiggy with it!" Karma said, laughing slightly at the professor's actions.

She looked up to the blackboard to see what was being written.

Okay. Karma's birthday was November 7, 2050. November was the 11th month, soo. 1+1=2. Her day was already a single number, so she moved to the year. 2+0+5+0=7.

Ooooh. Her life path number was 7. Now, to flip to her textbook.

SCORE! That was Karma, down to a T. This was rather exciting for her, because she LIKED the description that the book gave for her.

"So basically, because my number is saying I'm veryyy nosey. Which can come in handy with a lot of careers. Kind of like with the Department of Mysteries, riiight?"

She stopped for a moment and wondered.

"What careers do you think would be good for me, professor?"

Celandine checked her calculations and looked up in the textbook for the meaning of the number.

A seeker?

Okay. How much applies now and how much might apply in the future? Celandine re-read the textbook and thought about it before starting her answer.

She drew a bit of a blank on the 'now' part, but attempted to analyse it anyhow.

Cela re-read what she'd written and frowned a bit before sucking on her quill thoughtfully.

Reid caught the Jelly Slug feeling proud that he had earned some more points for his house. Now to get down to the actual work.

Raising his hand Reid asked, "Professor can you look over my work please?" He wanted to make sure he was doing it correctly.

Contemplating Karma's question, Macadrian replied thoughtfully, "Well, certainly your suggestion of the Department of Mysteries seems fitting. Perhaps an astronomer? Or an Arithmancer? A healer at St. Mungo's? Or a medical researcher? Any of these suit your fancy?"

Professor Shackleton nodded, "Certainly." Upon making her way to Reid's desk, she perused the writing on the parchment and confirmed, "Yes, you've done your calculation correctly and you've assessed your number well. Very nice."

Yesss. Department of Mysteries. If Karma got into the Ministry, that would be the first place she would apply to. Hmm. The other careers also seemed interesting too, especially the Healer, maybe even an Arithmancer.

"What all entails being an Arithmancer?" she asked. "Like, how hard was it to become an Arithmancy teacher?"

Copernicus chewed on the end of his quill as he considered his numbers.

It actually sounded about right and certainly reinforced his desire to go into a research field instead of going to work at the Ministry like his father. He didn't think he was all that concerned with finding meaning in life, but maybe people sought meaning in different ways. Some people did it through philosophy or divination, but Copernicus might find it in the past.

Lyra began calculating her numbers starting with the month, day, and year

Although three was not her favorite number, this fit her to a 'T'. She was very spontaneous and creative and...yes the list went on and on. She smiled as she straightened up in her chair with a proud look on her face.

I feel scared by my Life Path Number. I've never considered myself to be leadership material. I'm going to have to work hard to develop the skills and confidence needed to be a leader. I know I already possess courage and determination. I sometimes think my determination borders on fool hardyness. I always seem to find myself getting into all sorts of messes. I will need to find my pioneer spirit if I'm going to succeed as a leader. Are you sure I have the right life path number?

Sasori knew she could do this one, no problem. It was just a simple matter of working out numbers. She scribbled out the work on her parchment.

She quickly grabbed her book and looked up the number she got, six.
Sasori found that very interesting as she had developed an interest in counseling from a program she had participated in that summer. She started writing on her parchment again.
I have much responsibility at home, my only family is my godmother Gabrielle and it is hard for only person to care for the home. I have hopes of counseling into my future. I have been interested in it for all of summer while doing programs. I am curious for the path life will take for me and optimistic it will be a thing I enjoy.
Sasori raised her hand to ask the teacher a question. She hoped the teachers wouldn't have trouble with the accent she had picked up in France over the summer.
"Es ze work satizfactory, Profezzor?"

Daniel scribbled on his quill the instructions that was provided by the professor.

Alas! That is my Life Path Number. 5.

Daniel then raised his hands, "Professor, I got 5 as my Life Path Number. And based on what we have learned, 5 means that I am a resourceful and progressive and also a jack of all trades." he said and paused "That also means that I am a good public man, per se. So what sort of vocation should I pursue?" he asked.

Nodding her head as Reid made sure that she was indeed named Rachel, she reached into her bag to pull out her necessary supplies and therefore missed the questioning look he sent back at her. Good thing too - it would have just confused her anyway. Truth be told, she was quite surprised at her behaviour - Rachel wasn't one to randomly go up to someone and take a seat next to them without waiting for a consent... Hogwarts must be changing me more than I though - dang it, Jake was right again!

Rachel scribbled down furiously everything the Professor said, having drifted off with her thoughts and missing the whole first part of the lesson. Bugger... I'll have to copy that off someone... She nodded as the professor told them what do and looked down at her notes.

Pulling her hair up into a messy bun to get it away from her face, the fifth year quickly pulled out another, smaller, piece of parchment and began working out her Life Path Number.

Satisfied with her results and a little curious to see what the Master number meant, she quickly flicked open her book to the write page and began reading what the book had to say.

Rachel blinked. Er... Wow. Reading the two entries again, since she was quite sure that in this case both Life Path numbers 2 and 11 applied to her, she put down her quill and looked up at the ceiling, taking in what she had just read. In the back of her mind, she saw Professor Shackleton come towards Reid and tell him something, but she didn't really care. Spotlight, center of attention, illuminate the path for others, truthful, sensitive, potential doormat... These words repeated themselves over and over again in her head, causing the fifth year to groan slightly.

Right - pretend it's not you, pretend like it's someone else whom you are righting this about and get to work! she told herself, fighting the urge to sink into her familiar thinking mode where all she did was stare at the wall and think and think and think.

Grabbing her quill and dipping it in her ink, she poised her hand over the fresh piece of parchment and thought for a few seconds before quickly writing down everything that came to her.

"Oh boy..." she sighed softly, reading over what 'she' will do in life. A politician... But I don't like politics! I mean, okay fine I don't HATE them but they don't really mean that much to me- Rachel blinked twice as she realised she was giving herself excuses. Truth be told she knew NOTHING about politics and maybe, just maybe the analysis was spot on.

BUT, on the other hand, she liked working alone. Sure, she enjoyed having others around her but the best results always came from working by herself, where no one could tell her what do to. Inspirational leader... Dangnabbit! The analysis was answering all her doubts - yes, she could work alone but she LIKED working with others and as mush as the fifth year resented admitting this, she did like being in command, in control. She wasn't a prefect for nothing, after all...

"Professor? Could you -er, come please?" Rachel asked, her voice betraying her pure terror at the revelation she had just had. Her hand, the one raised in the air, shook slightly as she waited for Professor Shackleton to come to her and the other hand, her right hand, dipped her quill in ink and wrote a note in big letters under her analysis.

With his tongue sticking out slightly, Miles began working.

Month: 12, 1+2 = 3
Day: 10, 1+0 = 1
Year: 2+0+5+0 = 7

3+7+1 = 11.
Life Path Number: 11/2

"Ooh yey! Master life number." Miles grinned as he finished. He flipped open his textbook and ran his finger across the chosen analysis.

Woooah. Miles was gunna do well. The only ting that was worryng him was whether he could actually live up to the expectation of this master number. He knew he was doing alright at school, but he'd never thought about becoming an inspirational leader. What was that all about? He'd never been the leader of anything! Miles would always just do as he was told ... most of the time. "A teacher?" He raised an eyebrow. He didn't want to be a teacher! Possibly a leader. He'd always joked with Vannie about becoming the minister for magic, but he'd never meant it. Hehe.
