The dueling practice arena is a large, long room with high ceilings in the castle. It is lit with magical fire sconces and a few fireplaces with charmed screens to protect students from magical accidents. The arena houses several dueling pistes, each on a raised platform and surrounded by spectator benches. The pistes are covered by purple carpeting printed with phases of the moon marking dueling positions; this carpeting is scuffed, scorched, stained and worn from many years of use in spirited duels. The air carries a perpetually scorched, bitter scent from years of spells and incantations being thrown about in the room.

Please feel free to use the practice arena at your leisure to sharpen your wandwork and dueling skills, but keep to The Dueling Arena Rules!

Melanie finally stood up and started circling Ana... for fun. Just to make her a bit nervous. However she stumbled a bit ruining the entire ordeal, so, on with the duel!

Melanie cast the twitchy ears hex at Ana, mentally preparing herself for a retaliation.

Ana follow Melanie in the circling. "Good move!" she smiled.
Then Melanie sent another spell the twitchy ears hex and focusing she cried "Protego!" and the spell hit the shield rebound to a chair making it shake. With a smooth move she casted "Impedimenta!" keeping the circle

"Well Jake, you should know by now that I LOVE my poking finger and losing it... I'd be sad!" But he was still angry at Jakey Wakey at the Lakey since like, he WANTED to make him lose his poking finger. "Ya like birds, Jacob Bakers Jail Upstead?!"

Quickly, he cast the canary-transfiguration hex against him.

"My name- WOAH! PROTEGO!" Jake shouted, bringing his wand up and trying to focus it again, succeeding this time. He did NOT want to turn into a canary. That would just do him no favours, how would people hug him? Exactly!

"Number one, Cameron, my name is not Jacob Bakers Jail Upstead, number two," he started, wand still raised. "MORSUS!"

He watched as the stinging hex went straight for Cameron, this was his best one, Jake was soooooo itching for it to work. That evil little boy...

"WOOHOOO! I did it, uh-huuuh! It's mah birthday, JACOB FAKER FAIL UPSTEAD."

The name was probably wrong, but he wanted to get this duel over with and like win or lose already. "I've always wanted to see this on someone else, hehe!" With that he waved his wand, casting the Twitchy-Ear Hex. Maybe Jake would've liked it.

"Cameron will you st- THAT. IS. NOT. MY. NAME." Jake shouted at the boy, enraged. How many times had Jake told him?! Well... once... but that was besides the point. "I- ACK!"

Then from the eye-twitch to the enraged person, he put his hands up in the air when he saw the twitch in Jake's ear. Oh yeah, he won. He totally won, for the first time in all of his duels. Happy happy happy! But Jake didn't like the twitching, if his eyes could twitch, how come he didn't want his ears to twitch? Total awesomeness. Limping with his still stung ankle, he slowly walked over to Jake and looked at the twitchy ears.

"If ya want, I could use our wands to put it in yer ears. Maybe that'll stop 'em!" Slowly he looked at his own wand. Maybe Jake's wand was all... ear-waxxy. But then again he was a neat-freak. But then again... "On second thought, never mind! Let's gooooo now."

Cam frowned, why couldn't Jake let him stick wands in his ears? He guessed that they were all dirty and being that of a neat-freak, didn't want to let him know that he hadn't cleaned his ears. That was it, Jake hadn't cleaned his ears and was embarrassed to have some ear-wax on the ends of the wands. Ewww. That was gross, and he recognized the stinging from his ankle and sighed. It hurt. Jake had done the stinging spell twice to him.

"A way to cure stinging hexes tooooo!"'

He followed Jake out of the Dueling Arena and still walked with a limp.

Dominic was a bit unsure of himself - dueling a seventh year was definitely far above his league. But at the same time, he also knew that as his OWL exams were coming up at the end of the term, this would be excellent practice for him. And it was a fellow Hufflepuff, whom despite their minimal contact last term other than the Quidditch Pitch, the older wizard would never hurt him.

And so, with slightly uncertainty about himself, Dominic entered the dueling arena for the second time that year and waited for the lean Quidditch Keeper to follow him. This couldn't be too bad, right? It was only practice AND it was for homework; all the more reason to relax.

With either Curse Breaking or Quidditch ahead in Curt’s future, the seventh year Hufflepuff hadn’t really put much effort into dueling this year; yet he still found himself to be formidable enough. Dominic Denton awaited him, a gritty fifth year who would be a challenging match… no doubt.

Curt was the veteran, and probably the favorite to win but his nerves were still up a bit. The last time he was in here, he was demolished by a girl three years older than him, ending up in the Hospital Wing.

Anyways, he entered the dueling arena and spotted the fifth year. Walking up to him, Curt gave Dominic a twisted smile (all in good humor). “Are you ready for this?” He said, jokingly motioning to his wand as he pulled out the unicorn-cored stick.

Strong, feisty, hardworking Quidditch Players as they both were, he knew this would be a good practice session.

"Incarcerous!" Dominic shouted, sending off the start of the duel. Perhaps not the best of spells to use for the first, but it was the first to come to mind.

And there it started, like fireworks… yet with ropes. Curt knew what the curse was before the ropes came flying, incarcerous, efficient for the most part but quite easy to deflect. As a seventh year, Curt had become quite decent at non-verbal magic, so he brandished the unicorn-cored wand without a sound.

Protego! Curt thought the incantation vividly in his mind and whipped his wrist quickly. Ah yes, Dominic’s ropes were rendered completely useless and bounces off as it entered the vicinity of Curt’s forcefield. Although he wanted to continue with non-verbal magic, he also felt like using a stunner.

Deciding it would be a bit rude to non-verbally stun (being actually stunned HURTS), Curt brandished his wand, saying the incantation aloud. “Stupefy!” And a jet of red light was slung at the Hufflepuff prefect.

Dominic honestly was expecting that the seventh year would have him writhing on the floor of the Arena in pain by this point in their duel. Though he trusted Curt to not hurt him, there was still that feeling of doubt that accidents can and do happen. Frequently. And so close to the quidditch match was definitely nerve-wrecking.

Not even hearing the incantation, but only by the wand movement, had the fifth year known that Curt had successfully blocked his hex with a focused shield charm. Stupid non-verbals, he thought bitterly, glaring sourly at the seventh year.

Angrily preparing himself for the retaliation, Dominic had flicked his wand and already begun "Protego!" just as red light cast from Curt's wand. A stunner!? Oh he wanted to play dirty, eh?

Without much thought to what next, "Locomotor mortis," slipped from the fifth year's lips as though the words were second nature.

His shield charm was a bit late, and Dom’s spell hit the force-field and shoved Curt to the point where he lost a bit of his balance and was forced to take a step backwards. At least his legs weren’t stuck together.

Curtis raised his wand and flicked it, once again practicing his non-verbal magic. Petrificus Totalus! He focused in his mind the big brother version of Dom’s earlier curse… this one would be harder to read perhaps.

Dominic Denton was instantly frozen up by Curts body-binder and was now laying belly-up in the dueling arena. At least it wasn’t painful, Curt simply smiled mildly and walked towards his opposition.

With a simple wave of the wand and utterance of “finite incantatem”, the side effects were lifted. Once he had reached Dom, he put out his hand to help him up, “Nice duel Dom, you are way better than I was when I was in my fifth year.” He was being truthful, Dom had a knack for this… obviously. Curt was better with transfigurations and numbers.

As Dominic lay there, unmoving at the ceiling, his mind was still racing with about a billion and one questions. For the seventh year, the defense professor, and many more . . . But it wasn't long though before he could wiggle his toes again as he felt a strong, firm hand helping him stand.

"Thank you, Curt," he commented. "Though I could have been more vigilant, I suppose that comes with practice." Mused by that, he led the way from the Dueling Arena and off towards the Common Room to finish up on this Defense Assignment now that the practical parts were out of the way . . .

Copernicus entered the dueling arena and glanced around hopefully. He wanted to relieve a bit of... frustration, and he hoped his partner would arrive soon.

As she entered the room which housed the dueling arena, Anna quickly checked the pockets of her robes to ensure that she did indeed bring her wand along. Not that she'd ever consider herself absentminded enough to forget such a necessity, but it made her feel better to check just in case. When that little detail had been checked and verified, Anna made way towards the dueling arena. She could spot Copernicus from a mile around---waiting patiently for her and leaving himself wide open as a target. She really should just----no, she couldn't. He was her friend. Friend or no friend, though, he was her opponent for the time-being, so opponent she would treat him as. Slipping quietly into the arena, Anna withdrew her wand, aimed it at Copernicus, and called out, "Expelliarmus!" No use waiting around and wasting a good opportunity, eh? "Soo..., how ya doing, Cope?" she asked, completely after-the-fact, but at least she'd properly greeted the boy.

Copernicus turned and stepped out of the line of her spell with his eyebrow up. "That is NOT sportsmanlike, Miss Greingoth. However, you're charming and I forgive you." He bowed and raised his wand. "Shall we? Do you want to make a... wager on this? Something friendly?"

Darn. He'd ducked out of the way, and here she'd thought the battle would be over before it'd had time to even get good and started. "Spoken like a true...well, whatever it is they call people who take dueling lessons. Very good, Mister Kettleburn," she said, taking on the same formality her friend had. "Oh, and thank you. Likewise." She studied him as he bowed, then followed suit and did the same. She narrowed her eyes briefly, still studying him, before raising her own wand.

"What is it that you had in mind..., Cope?" she asked, dropping the formality and adopting a cautious tone instead. She wasn't aware that Ravenclaws set wagers---especially this Ravenclaw. "Just go ahead and tell me what I'll receive when I win. I don't believe we need to waste time discussing what would happen if you won..." She finished her little speech with a half-smile---afterall, Copernicus Kettleburn was her friend.

"A favor," he offered. "For both of us. If you win, I'll do you a favor of your choosing. And if I win... you'll owe me. Nothing that breaks any rules, I promise." He headed for the middle of the room and took up his position. "Just a friendly sort of wager, I promise."
