ooc: Please note that this class is intended for sixth and seventh years only. Other classes will be held for Beginner (1st through 3rd years) and OWL (4th and 5th years) levels.

The smell of wafting potion fumes assails you as you enter the classroom. There is an unattended cauldron sitting on the professor's desk, with a green potion bubbling serenely within. There is no sign of the headmaster. As you take your seat, assuming of course that the often lost professor has been delayed coming back from the loo, you look up and find a message scrawled upon the blackboard in Headmaster Bontecou's messy scrawl:

Today's lesson is on potion development. One practice all potion developers should be well versed in is that of identifying potions and the ingredients within them. For the first part of the lesson, please gather around the front desk and discuss among yourselves what potion this might be using your senses and any spells or other means you have of identifying the potion or its ingredients.

Hints
1.
Do NOT taste or touch the potion.

ooc FYI (so you know the outcome of anything you characters might try to do but please remember this is OOC info only!!! Your characters won't know these things unless they look/smell/taste/whatever): The potion is green, it smells like clean freshwater, tastes salty (your character will get a tummy ache, become light headed and possibly faint if they drink it), explodes when dropped, feels slippery and makes your fingers tingle when touched with the fingers (toes if you touched it with toes, etc).

I will be coming back to run a traditional part of class when I get a chance.

Ack. Why did that chick keep asking him if he had any ideas!? Was it because he was the Prefect here? Goodness. Talk about being put under pressure. He wasn't about to admit that he was a dumb Prefect. Not infront of all these lot.

"Uhhm.." He started nervously, scratching at his forehead and praying the teeny tiny brain hiding inside it would come up with something smart. The chances of that were zilch. Eh.

"Oh.. hey." Clifford nodded when yet another girl showed up. Wasn't she a Prefect last term? Hopefully she was smart, because he was struggling here. "Know any potion ingredients that smell of pond water?" He asked quickly.

Clifford seemed to be at a bit of a loss, not everyone was great at potions after all. You can't be great at everything.

Tobi felt sorry for him, maybe it was because he was rubbish at so many subjects himself. "Um, Aggie," Tobi cut in, "I don't think it smells as much like pond water, really, more like, well just water. It's a cleaner smell really."

Tobi headed over to his desk to get his book. "I'm going to give, um, her, some help searching the history books, for what it's worth, my copy of Hogwarts a History is a mess." he called over his shoulder.

It was a good thing that Aggie couldn’t read minds. Had the prefect referred to her as Chick, she would have dunked his head into the potion and that would have been that. They would have only had to wait and see what the results of his head dunking would have been.

Lucky for him, he hadn’t said it aloud. “Leeches tend to have a pondy smell,” Aggie piped up. She hadn’t considered the smell would have come from an individual potion ingredient until the prefect suggested it. “Espcially when combined with shrivelfigs.”

HEY LOOK AT THAT!

"Hey! Guys! look at this!" Tobi squealed, yeah he did that when he got excited. "Branxton taught Scintillation Solution in Year 2060-2061! My sister told me about that too! how did I ever forget! It's got about 3 things in it!"

Ludo watched as Liz entered the classroom. "Hey you." he said as she locked arms with his.

He studied the potion and the blackboard once more. "No one would happen to know a spell that separates a potion into its original ingredients, huh? And I doubt the Headmaster would just leave his leftover ingredients lying around..."

Ludo raised his eyebrows as the other boy mentioned Scintillation Solution. He took out his potion text and flipped to a page about that potion and read aloud: "Scintillation meaing 'brilliant' or 'clever'...possiby a brain tonic related to a Wit-Sharpening Potion..."

Elizabeth glanced over as a Slytherin asked about pond water. "Well, You could probably use pond water in a potion. Don't know of any, off the top of my head, but that would definitely explain why something would smell like that." She saw the prefect badge on his robes, and wracked her brain for a couple seconds, trying to remember if she knew him from last term. But then she remembered she had only met Evangeline in the lounge that one time, so accepted she didn't know him.

And then the tall Gryffindor that she remembered seeing in other classes pointed out what she had already said, and she rolled her eyes. "Didn't I say that earlier?," she asked, before laughing. "In any case, unless we're all crazy, I'd guess water is a big part of this potion. Fresh water, since that would be the only thing that would smell clean like this. But let's wait and see what happens when they look in the book."

She looked up at Ludo as he spoke again. "Hey," she said, before a thoughtful look appeared on her face again. "I know there is some sort of spell to separate potions. But I can't quite remember what it is," she then said, sighing.

Vanessa looked up and over at the dude as he suddenly squealed. "Did you just squeal?" Vannie asked, grinning, she had thought that only Miles did that.
"But do you think that Scintillation Solution is the potion?" She asked, looking back at the potion. "Is that potion green?"

Qaz came barreling in at a dead run, 'Sorry, Headm.....'

Then she noticed that he wasn't there, and everybody was gathered around a cauldron. 'Anybody care to catch me up?' She asked catching her breath.

Tobi exclaimed something and most of the people around turned to look at him. Aggie on the other hand, leaned further over the cauldron and took a big whiff of the potion. Not the brightest of ideas, seeing as if one really truly wanted to know what something smelt like in a laboratory setting, they should have ‘wafted’ the smell towards them.

"Er, I have no idea, actually," he suddenly wished Briony were there. She knew Potions better than anyone he knew, except professor Bontecou.

Okay, they're trying to figure out what's in the cauldron, Qaz thought. 'I suppose, 'SpeRevelio' would be cheating?' she asked, trying to keep a distance from the fumes.

Tobi was infinitely grateful to the Ravenclaw boy for charming Aggie's head. Merlin knows that if he'd tried it, he'd only have succeeded in setting Aggie's hair on fire.

"Thanks man." He held tight to Aggie's elbow anyway, just in case.

Elizabeth had still been trying to remember that spell, her eyes closed as she concentrated, when she noticed she didn't feel Ludo next to her anymore, and heard a few crashes. Snapping her eyes open, she looked around to see the Gryffie girl on the floor, with her housemate and Ludo down by her. "Is she going to be okay?," she asked, before looking back at the cauldron for a second.

"In any case, Scarpin's Revelaspell can be used to find out the ingredients to a potion. SpeRevelio. Although I'm not certain the headmaster wants us to do something like that for the project he gave us," she then said, before glancing at the little Hufflepuff over at the desk. "What ingredients does the Scintillating Solution have in it?," she asked her, before glancing back down at the floor and the Gryffindor.

Aggie found herself sitting on the floor next to Tobi. She blinked a few times and took a few deep breaths only to find that the eyesight wasn’t clearing. “Obbweee” she said then stopped talking. Why did she sound so funny. “Ut’s ooowing oommm?” She raised a hand to her face and felt something squishy and wet, much like a catfish.

She looked from Tobi to the other boy who had his wand out. Had he jinxed her and given her a fish face? “Iddd twoooo ifff eee a issshhhh ace?”

Qaz figured Elizabeth was right...it would be cheating.

'I've never heard of the Scintillating Solution. Sounds like it could be similar to a love potion. I'd rather not get near either one.' Qaz said with an obvious shiver. 'and I really don't think Aggies reaction to it is very scintillating.'

Ludo watched in suspense as the Gryffindor girl took a few breaths. He turned to Liz and said, "I...I think so...Yes! She's coming around."

The girl said a few words, but they were clouded by the Bubble Head. Ludo took his wand and stuck it into the bubble of air and muttered a counter-charm. The bubble popped with a gust of wind.
"Are you ok?" he said looking her in the face.

Ludo looked over to Qaz as she questioned the Scintillation Solution. He reached over for his text to hand to her. "Here Qaz...what do you make of it?"

Qaz started skimming through Hogwarts, a History. 'Let's see, in the 2060-2061 term, some Salem witches used a 'Summoning Solution' Do any of you know anything about that?'

"That one can be taken internally, while we were warned not to drink this." Tobi told her, "So I think that eliminates it."

"Ludo just had cast a Bubble-Head Charm on you. So you could breathe better, since the potion fumes or something affected you," she explained. "Could you have had an allergy or something to one of the ingredients in this potion?," she then asked, as it occurred to her that Aggie was the only one to have been adversely affected so far.

Glancing at the textbook as Ludo passed it to Qaz, she then said, "I don't know. I think her reaction to it means maybe it's not a Scintillating Solution. Even though that's our best guess so far. I mean, why would somebody faint after just smelling something that's supposed to sharpen your brain?" She glanced at the Gryffindor boy. "And just because Headmaster Bontecou doesn't want us to drink it doesn't mean that the potion couldn't be drunk. Just maybe he's not quite sure what it would do to us."

Qaz continued to flip through the book, 'Maybe we haven't gone back far enough. The term before, the made a cleaning solution. Anybody want to drop some on the floor and see what it does?'

"Well, Aggie's allergic to lot's of weird stuff, jellyfish, ginko, colour changing ink," Tobi explained, shrugging off the funny look Aggie gave him, "What? You think I don't pay attention? It's not impossible that she'd have a funny reaction to the potion too. We can't assume that it does or doesn't do that to everyone with out all of us sticking our noses over it, and I don't really want to do that."

Everyone was asking her if she was ok. Besides a very cold bum, she seemed fine. What was the problem? “I’m fine,” she paused then added. “I think. Should I not be?” She turned to Tobi who was once again calling her ‘love’ and once again she was ignoring it (although this time it wasn’t intentional).

She touched her face again. The slimy squish catfish likeness was gone, but she was still confused. “Did you turn me into a fish face?”

Elizabeth nodded as Aggie's friend offered an answer to her question, before laughing. "We all smelled it. Cause we decided it smelled like water, remember? And we didn't pass out or anything." SHe looked at Aggie as the Gryffindor responded to her friend saying what she was allergic too, and smiled. "All we're trying to do is figure out this potion," she reassured her. "And maybe one of the ingredients is on that list he gave us, since you can't deny you had a reaction to just smelling it."

Then she glanced at Qaz. "We're not supposed to touch it. And we know it's volatile. So if you really want to try and figure out how to drop some of it on the floor, feel free. But I think I'd want to move far away first."
