ooc: Please note that this class is intended for sixth and seventh years only. Other classes will be held for Beginner (1st through 3rd years) and OWL (4th and 5th years) levels. The smell of wafting potion fumes assails you as you enter the classroom. There is an unattended cauldron sitting on the professor's desk, with a green potion bubbling serenely within. There is no sign of the headmaster. As you take your seat, assuming of course that the often lost professor has been delayed coming back from the loo, you look up and find a message scrawled upon the blackboard in Headmaster Bontecou's messy scrawl: Quote:

ooc FYI (so you know the outcome of anything you characters might try to do but please remember this is OOC info only!!! Your characters won't know these things unless they look/smell/taste/whatever): The potion is green, it smells like clean freshwater, tastes salty (your character will get a tummy ache, become light headed and possibly faint if they drink it), explodes when dropped, feels slippery and makes your fingers tingle when touched with the fingers (toes if you touched it with toes, etc).

Tobi entered the classroom sniffing. He knew something was, shall we say cooking, but he wasn't sure what.
He crept up to the front of the classroom to the cauldron up front to see what it was.
"Well, whatever this is, it must be pretty stable to be left alone," he tapped the blackboard and a hint appeared. "Oh! Nope, guess not." Tobi regarded it carefully. He stared wracking his mind for what the potion could be.

"Any ideas?" she asked Tobi after a minute of trying to look into the pot.

"I was having another chat with the house elves. They know stuff," Tobi shrugged. "It couldn't hurt to try." Tobi poked the black board with his wand again, the universal language in the wizading world for, 'do stuff', "have you got anything else to tell us? Please?"
The black board revealed its second clue, confirming Tobi's suspicion that it wasn't a particularly complicated potion. It wouldn't be if they were meant to identify all its ingredients right? Now what was it?
"So it's volatile and its got very few ingredients, do you remember if Shrinking solution was particularly volatile? Perhaps we can confirm or exclude my guess."

Ludo made his way through the Dungeons to the Potions classroom. This had to be the coldest part of the castle in winter. He had his Ravenclaw scarf and cloak on as he entered the class.
He was surprised to see that the Headmaster had not yet arrived but had left instructions for them behind a potion brewing in a cauldron. The rest of the class was gathered around it, so Ludo joined them.
Looking at the faces present, he noticed the older Gryffindor girl from breakfast just this morning.
"Afternoon all..." He pointed to the board. "This is a bit unusual, huh?"
He read through the instructions and looked back to the cauldron and the liquid within.

Grinning at the Gryffindors, Clifford squeezed himself next to them and peered into the bubbling cauldron. Ooooh. It was all green and purdy. "It - It smells like something familiar.." He stated, leaning closer and sniffing the vapour in the air. "A shrinking solution?" It sounded like a decent enough guess to him, but Potions wasn't exactly one of his strongest subjects. "I'm not volunteering to having a taste." Nuh uh.

As she entered the Potions classroom, Vanessa stopped still and had a little coughing fit. Note to self: Watch the fumes. After recovering she looked around noticing that the classroom was minus a Professor, and that there were a number of students around a bubbling cauldron at the front of the class room.
Looking a little confused she approached them, dumping her bag on a desk as she did so. "What do we have here then?" She asked, motioning to the potion as she watched Clifford lean in to have a closer look. "Don't fall in Clifford," She smirked at him, now that would be amusing, but it would also ruin the potion.

Clifford tilted his head in confusion when the Ravenclaw guy pointed at the blackboard. Ah. "No tasting or touching the potion.. so we have to figure out what it is just by sight and smell alone?" That was impossible, wasn't it? It could've been ANYTHING!
Rubbing the back of his neck, the Prefect studied the rest of the blackboard. "..using your senses and any spells or other means you have of identifying the potion or its ingredients.." He read aloud, turning back to the table. "Anyone know of a spell that'll help us?" He certainly didn't.
One dark eyebrow raised at the sight of Vanessa the Snot Girl and Clifford gave a sarcastic "Ha Ha Ha," at her words. Fall in.. honestly. "Well, don't get too close Vanessa.. you don't want any of this touching you if it REALLY is a shrinking solution.. you're enough of a midget already." HAHA!

Aggie and I have learned from the black board that it doesn't have many ingredients, but we can't really agree what 'few ingredients' means, and we sorta think that could mean a Shrinking Solution, because it's a green colour like this potion, but I can't remember what it's supposed to smell like. Clifford and... that guy, sorry man, I never got your name, they both think that nothing should be going into cauldron to test it." Tobi grinned. On that point he was vehemently in agreement.

Aggie shrugged, her cheeks turning a little pink. "Well, mine always turned green." She glanced around the room wondering if anyone else thought so. "Maybe you can ask the black board for another clue? It seems to like you." Like a lot of people around here do. She fought to keep the sharp lines from forming between her eyebrows at that thought. "It's probably not a boil potion though, I don't smell that burnt nettle smell."

Tobi was suddenly unsure of himself, maybe HE was the one who was wrong. It's just that a shrinking solution seemed so tidy, so perfect. and it was definitely green, he didn't rememeber the cure for boils being green, it was so long ago that he'd done it.
"Well I can try..." Tobi stepped over to the black board and tapped it, "You aren't feeling like sharing anything else, are you? Please give us another hint?"

Accidentally on purpose nudging Vanessa with his elbow, Clifford listened curiously to the discussion between the two Gryffindors. They seemed to know what they were going on about - more than he did anyway. Potions just left him confuzzled. Then again, most things did. Heh.
"What IS that smell?" He thought out loud, closing his eyes and sniffing at the air again. "Sorry dude.." The sixth year shook his head when Tobi asked who had that Hogwarts book. He hadn't read it.. and he didn't own a copy. Boohoo.

"Now Clifford....Join in on the discussion dear." She grinned as she listened to the others.
"Hogwarts a History I've got mine," She nodded, as she quickly walked back to her bag, retrieved said book and came back to the group.

Ah, Tobi got the board to cooperate again. Aggie swore that if Tobi really wanted to he could bat his eyelashes at a hipporgriff, he could get it to take him for a ride.
"Didn’t bring mine Tobi. It’s huge and I wasn’t heading to history class.” She leaned on the table looking around and hoping someone else brought their books with them. “Maybe it’s something we’ve never made at all. Can you think of something you read about but never made?” She looked over at the Slytherin Prefect. “Any ideas?” Quote:

Elizabeth walked into potions class to see everyone gathered around the front of the room. "Okay, the headmaster's vanished and we're all trying to figure out who did it," she joked as she dropped her school bag on a desk as she made her way to the front. Halfway there, she caught a clean smell, and her head tilted to one side as she tried to figure out what it meant.
And when she got to the group, she saw they were around a cauldron. And looking up, she read the writing on the blackboard. "Oh. So we're supposed to figure out what this is," she commented idly, before pointing something out. "So it's a green potion, that smells clean, like water. And half of you smell really weird," she said with a smile, before looping an arm through Ludo's as she leaned over the cauldron again. "Otherwise, hi everyone," she added with a grin, which was semi-obscured by the fact she was looking down at the cauldron.
