| | Muggle Studies Lesson 1 - Currency Conversion and Muggle Fashions
Antonio walked into the classroom, getting things ready for the students ahead of time. There were two differrent subjects he wanted to cover in today's lesson, so he knew that time was of the essence. The first part of the lesson was going to focus on currency conversion, so he began to get his materials out for the students as they entered the room.
The first item was a converter chart which would convert wizarding money into United States dollars - Harry Potter currency converter
The second item was another converter chart, this one converted the British pound, the U.S. dollar, the Canadian dollar, the Euro dollar, the Australian dollar and the Japanese yen back and forth into one of the other type of currency. Currency Converter - Yahoo! Finance
There were other types of currency in the world, of course, but Antonio had found these sources easy to work with and thought the students would be able to use the materials easily in class.
He waited for the students to show up, calling out instructions to each person as they entered.
"Good morning, everyone. We are going to be working with a couple different things today, but the first part deals with currency. Please take one of each of the two handouts as you enter, then take a seat and we'll be getting ready soon. Feel free to take a chocolate chip cookie, as well, and perhaps some pumpkin juice." He gestured to the serving area to the side of his desk. |

Matilda couldn't stop beaming. Class had only just started and she could see the galleons dangling in front of her already. She made a grab for it, hand in the air.
"The United Kingdom uses pounds, and in exchange rate, is higher than the American dollar. The Japanese yen is worth least of the three."

No one had laughed at her when she had asked about the wizarding world.
The teacher asked an obvious question and even though she had only been in the wizarding world for about a month she was sure she knew the answer. Melanie raised her hand. "Galleons, sickles and knuts." she said.
As the next question came up, this one about muggle currency she knew the answer. "In US they use dollars, Japan yen and England Pounds. There's other ones too though like pennies and nickles. Those are the only other ones I know cause I'm American..." she smiled, hoping she was'nt being a know-it-all. She simply wanted to earn points for her house. Cadence looked at Melanie and shook her head at the question asking her if they minded. Of course not! She said to her.
She smiled as Melanie and Ana both correctly answered the Professor's questions. That was already 6 more points for Hufflepuff, not to mention all the other Hufflepuffs in the class. There were a lot of really smart students in this class. Cadence waited for the Professor's next words.

Since Lizzie had answered the professor's question she quickly turned to Chris while waiting for the professor to say something more. She smiled widely, teasing Chris a bit. You didn't know that one? Ooh, I guess you were right about my advantage in this class.. She giggled.

Elan was twisting this way and that as a flurry of students answered the question. He was curious why the professor had not asked of Italy. Perhaps he had a bias against Italy. He saw his friends Aggie and Tobi and some other students he knew and smiled, waiting for the next question.

Can anyone tell me what the most common types of currency are in the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan? They all three use something different, that will give you a hint, and I'm looking for the most commonly recognized currency form for each country." Anna raised her hand to reply. She was pretty sure she knew the answer to this question. "Here in the United Kingdom, sir, we use the pound sterling. In the United States, they use dollars and coins. Finally, the Japanese use what's called yen," she said.

She hoped the next question was something she actually knew something about.
And as luck would have it, it was. Aggie's hand shot up into the air. "Pounds, Dollars, and Yen." Maybe she wouldn't have as hard of a time in class this year as she thought. Tobi jerked to the side, nearly falling out of his seat but recovering quickly. He'd probably expire from shame if he caused a ruckus in class. The goals this year were NOT to cause a stir, NOT to shame his house, NOT to get killed in a carniverous plant attack.
He glared at Aggie. "Do you mind?" he growled under his breath.

He glared at Aggie. "Do you mind?" he growled under his breath. Obviously Nathaniels death glare hadn't worked before. He looked at the two of them with malice. And whispered "Will you both knock it off! We don't nee to lose anymore points. Pay attention to class!". They were obviously thick in the head.

"For those of you who answered that the U.S. uses the dollar, the U.K. uses the pound and Japan uses the yen, you are correct," Antonio said. "There is also a Euro-Dollar, which is very important, and other countries use the dollar as currency as well, amongst them Canada and Australia. But, the value of the dollar in different countries is different, and that's what we are going to learn about next.
Before we do that, though, I would like to have you all work on converting wizarding money into the United States dollar. To start, I want to see if you can figure out $100.00 in United States money is equal to in wizarding world money. Everyone, go ahead and use your calculators to perform this exercise, please. We'll be using this calculator a bit more then move on to the other calculator, then the second part of the lesson."

"Would it be 20 galleons, 13 sickles and 17 knuts sir?" She asked, hoping that she had done the calculation right. It would be embarrasing if she had not.

He glared at Aggie. "Do you mind?" he growled under his breath. Aggie gave Tobi only the briefest of glances. “Course I mind, but you were being rude.” Aggie wondered how boys had just bad manners. As she watched Professor Dumont move around the front of the classroom, she got an idea. Hogwarts should teach some more etiquette classes, because certainly the ones offered to the boys at Cooper’s School didn’t stick very well, especially in Tobi’s case.
Of course, that idea was lost the moment Professor Dumont smile and asked another question. Aggie tossed her hand into the air. “0 galleons, 13 sickles and 17 knuts”

Karma scribbled on her paper furiously. Those Gryffindors really needed to put a cauldron in it. "Honestly," she hissed as a fellow Gryffindor told them to hush.
After using the calculator, she figured it out, and proudly raised her hand. "Professor, one hundred US dollars in Wizarding money is 20 galleons, 13 sickles and 17 knuts, sir."
