Anna sank down in her seat just a bit. She'd been awarded two points, thankfully, but she'd apparently incorrectly pronounced something. She wasn't the greatest at Ancient Runes, so she wasn't quite sure what she'd mispronounced, but the professor didn't seem too upset. Anna raised her hand to answer the next question. "I've heard of the Kensington Runestone," she said.

Paris raised her hand. "The Vallentuna, Amno and the U 160 in Risbyle." She offered.

She hoped that was right, her head was pounding and her hand was cramping.

Cale raised his hand. "I dunno if these are the important ones you're talking about, but I know of a few...there is the the Snoldelev stone from Denmark, as well as the Jelling runestone in Scandinavia. Then there is the stone at Stenkvista, which I think shows something relating to that Thor guy," he explained.

Jake sat bat, a little stung. She'd... laughed at him? Laughed? That... hurt... Plus, he'd said 'the' whereas other people hadn't... and they didn't get laughed at.

Right, I'm getting this right or I'm shutting my trap. Jake raised his hand, and said, a tad miserably.

"The... Valleberga stone?" he tried. It was the only one he could remember from reading up, that he could pronounce. And even then the word kinda fell out of his mouth...

Copernicus raised his hand. "What about the Valleberga Runestone or the stone at Adelsö?"

"Very Good, two points each." Alessia said, "Pick one, and tell me a little bit about it... not much just a bit."

Smiling one little smile, Willow raised her hand at once, deciding she would just explain the runestone she had mentioned. It just seemed like the logical thing to do, yes? "Well, professor, The Rök Runestone is one of the most famous runestones. Aaaaaaand, it is placed by the church in Rök, Sweden."

Paris raised her hand, "Well Professor Swedish men traveled to Denmark to spread Christianity throughout the world. And the runestone Amno talks about two men who were baptized in Sweden. It says 'he died in christening robes in Denmark.'" She explained. She hoped thats what the professor wanted to hear.

Copernicus found the stones to be fascinating, and he was eager to talk about them. "Professor, there were a number of runestones raised in Sweden to mark those who traveled to England in Viking voyages. One of these stones was near the bridge of Saltängsbron in Västmanland and was written in Old Norse and the Younger Futhark, and it read something like 'Gísl had the bridge made in memory of Ásl/Ôsl, his son. He died in England. May God help his spirit and soul.' Professor, were these sorts of runestones were pretty much used as memorials, not as what we would consider gravemarkers?"

Cale raised his hand. "Well, the Snoldelev stone from Denmark has three drinking horns intertwined with Borromean rings," he explained. "It has an inscription in old Norse that reads 'Gunnvaldr's stone, Hróaldr's son, reciter of Salhaugar' when translated," he explained.

Thoughtful expression on her face, Anna tried desperately to remember what she'd heard about the Kensington Stone. When she'd managed to remember enough to successfully answer the question, she raised her hand. "The Kensington Runestone is a slab made of greywacke," she began. "It's covered in runes on its face and side and is actually considered by some to be a hoax. If it's actually genuine, it would suggest that Scandinavian explorers reached the middle of North America in the 14th century." Anna paused and then added, "Do you think it's a hoax?"

Snoldelev Stone was carved in the 9th century at Snoldelev, Ramsø, Denmark and is now at National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This runestone is one of the oldest in Denmark. It is decorated with a design on three interlocking horns and a swastika, which I find quite bizarre.


The inscription reads, in native text:
Gunwalds sten, sonaR Roalds, þulaR a Salhøgum.

Which translates into English:
Gunnvaldr's stone, Hróaldr's son, reciter of Salhaugar

TH Jelling runestones are in Denmark from the 10th century. The smaller stone was erected by the king Gorm for his wife and later the larger stone was made by his son in honor of his parents.

Ana raised her hand "Well, for example, the Jelling stones are from the 10th century, found at the town of Jelling in Denmark. The older of the two was raised by the first King of Denmark, Gorm the Old in memory of his wife Thyra. The larger of the two stones was raised by King Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth in memory of his parents, celebrating his conquest of Denmark and Norway, and his conversion of the Danes to Christianity." she said "And the runic inscriptions on these stones are considered the most well known in Denmark." she finished and smiled.

"The Kalveston stone in Ostrgotard is dated to the 9th century. It is the oldest inscription that mentions a Viking chieftain leading an expediton eastward and many other chieftains would follow in his wake. Unfortunately it does not tell the exact destination of the Viking expedition.

"Two points."

"Very Good Mr. Kettleburn," she said to him, "Yes, these runestones were memorials, five points, darling."

"Good Prefect, four points."

"Do I? It may be... but I don't want to think of it that way. I like trusting... so I will say, no I don't think it's a hoax." She said. "Five points."

"Very good. Five points." She told the Ravenclaw.

"Two points."

"Very good... Five points." she told her.

"Good, Five points."

Alessia created a ball of light and tossed it above the kids. With her wand she burst it and candy came flying to each student. "Such good little students," she said standing between the Slytherin boy prefect and the lotion boy, and ruffling their hair. "Enjoy your sweeties, and for your assignment, you are to create your own runestone. You are to write me a paper on what it is, what runes and what drawings are on it, pretend you just unearthed it, tell me where you dug it up from, and in what condition? If you can, draw it for me." She said to the kids. "You have seven days to complete the assignment. Class Dismissed."

Clifford was so excited at the prospect of scrummy sweeties, that this time he wasn't even aware of the Professor ruffling his hair. SWEETIES! Oh, and an assignment. Bah. "Thankoo for the intereshting leshun, Professha Lupa." The Slytherin exclaimed through his mouthful of sweeties as he collected up his things and got to his feet ready to leave.

Ana was so happy with her job. She wrote down the homework, it looked little hard but she'll try. "Proffesor, we need to invent a phrase, right?" she asked

Twilight wrote down the homework and sighed. It sounded awfully hard to do. She raised her hand and asked," Do we use our own made-up runes or do we use runes already established?"

"A phrase, a poem, whatever your runestone would say." She said smiling.

"You will use the Futhark, but if you wish to make designs on the runestone, you are welcome to do so as well." She said.
