| | History of Magic Lesson 3
Ethan had left the windows open in the classroom and the brisk January air had succeded in freshening up and freezing up the room. Truebridge closed the windows and sat at his desk, wrapped in warm layers to ward off the icy temperature in the classroom.
Hmm, the desks were straight again. He flicked Loretta and the desks all moved a fraction of an inch in various directions. Satisfied by this, Ethan flicked his wand at the board, revealing the topic of todays class. Quote: The Tales of Beedle The Bard He yawned and kicked his feet up on the desk, apparently snoozing behind his customary dark glasses. |

Jane was listening to the students' explanation. She wondered if SHE had a semi hairy heart. She began to wonder off into daydreamland about William again, but stopped when she remembered Chris and began to shut down all emotions towards these 2 subjects.
Jane laughed at Anna's disgusted face.

And no fair maiden's can convince him that he would be happy with them as a partner. Not until he overhears his servants jeering why a man such as himself could not attract a wife. So he seeks out a woman to become his wife, one that is superior to all others and he finds such a girl but still he feels nothing for her and he shows her his heart in the chest. She tells him to put the heart back and so to please her, he does just that but because the heart had grown cold and strange being condemned to the darkness it still felt nothing. So the warlock decided to take the maiden's heart and replace it with his old hairy heart but the hairy heart refused to be taken out. So in the end he had to cut it out and in doing so he eventually died." Kayla took a deep breath before going on, "The lessons to be learnt from this story is that no matter who you are, you cannot escape some form of injury be it emotional, physical or mental. The warlock saw falling in love as a sign of weakness and humilitation and that his security and comfort would be affected and he was not willing to gamble on that." "Good analysis, Kayla." Quote:

And the rest of the story also hinges on how much he wants to be seen as better than everyone else. He finds out his servants either pitied him, or thought him as unable to attract anyone, and that is the only reason he decides to find a wife. Because they hurt his pride. And when the maiden he chose as worthy of him didn't immediately fall for him, he feels the need to prove her wrong. Which goes horribly awry, since as soon as he replaces the heart to please her, she goes to him only to have his heart rebel against her love and made him choose to take hers because it was better, killing her. And when his own heart refuses to relinquish its hold on him, he ends up killing himself as well." She took a breath, then continued by saying, "So, in a way, the story tells us that it is better to accept humanity and its inherent 'weaknesses', than fall prey to your pride." "Thank you Elizabeth. Quite right." Ethan nodded. Quote:

"The Warlock's Hairy Heart is about a young man who decides that falling in love would ruin his life. He saw his friends falling in love, and thought that they way they behaved afterwards was just... stupid. He thought they were fools, and decided to stay above the pull of love forever. So he did some Dark Magic and made himself immune to love. Nobody else knew about it though, and they all thought that he would eventually fall in love and get married like everyone else." He paused, and waited for the tale to fast-forward in his head. It was repeating itself, word for word, as he'd learned it as a child while in the hospital. "His parents died, and he got all their money and their home, and he was actually happy that they'd died. Which is really sad... But one day, he heard two of his workers talking about how sad it was that he had no one to share all his wealth with, like a lady friend... so he decided to get a lady friend who would be the envy of everyone else in the world. And the next day a woman showed up that fit everything he was looking for, so even though he didn't feel anything for her, he started... er, what's the word... courting her...and her family wanted her to marry him, so she was going to, but she told him that she wished that he had a heart. So he took her down to the dungeon and showed her that he had a heart, but it was all hairy and shrunken from not having been allowed to properly be shown love and everything... and the lady wanted him to put it back in, and when he did, everything overwhelmed him and he killed her without meaning to, because his heart was greedy for everything it had been denied. And in the end, he cut out his own heart so it wouldn't have mastery over him, and he died."
Raiden blushed. He'd pretty much not summarized, but told the whole tale. Again.
"That was probably too much, huh..." He thought a second. "But this story is supposed to be telling us that we shouldn't avoid having feelings and falling in love, because in the end, trying to avoid it might destroy us. Invulnerability isn't absolute."
((ooc: Raiden gets very excited about faerie tales...)) "Very thorough, Raiden. If you would, please join Vanessa at the board, one of you can summarise the story and one of you work on the lessons we learn from the story. Precisely as Tobi and Copernicus just did." Quote:

"When he meets a lady, they go to dinner, and she wants to know that he has a heart. He keeps it somewhere and shows her it, and she wants him to put it back inside himself. Shaking his head, Jake tried to quit rambling. "Anyway, he gets a lady-person at his castle and there's some party and she thinks he's totally weird, for some reason. And she finds the heart, kinda grossed out... But she puts it back into him... and he reacts badly because the heart turned all weird and the good things make him bad... and he takes her heart, which kills her... and he tries the trade the hearts, but his one won't leave, so he cuts it out, because he never wants his heart to control him... "And the moral is supposed to be, I think, don't try and... erm... evade your heart and stuff... even though you love with your brain, not with your heart and it's kinda stupid to meddle with your own "heart" and stuff... Of course... all that love stuff is, like... not real... that's why it's in a faerie tale... right?" "It acts as a metaphor, Jake. I think that the action of taking his heart out is related to Dark Arts, which are never a good sign. So one day he hears his servants talkin' about him, how he will never marry because he doesn't have a heart. So he decides to find himself a pretty and intelligent and rich witch to mary and make everyone envy him. One day they have a feast in the castle and she says he must prove her he has a heart so he shows her his heart in a crystal casket. But the hairy heart is stronger and does not want to come out, so the warlock dies with the witches heart on his hand a dagger on the other." Joanne pauses" so the morals are, first, never use dark magic, nothing good comes from that and you can never reverse the process, second... if you meet a nice lady, you better shave before showing your hairy heart" Joanne giggles " sorry, I mean, you better have a heart to offer the lady, not an actual heart, but a hear as being a feeling, sentiment. And third, falling in love should never be a problem, falling in love having a broken heart, it's part of life, there is nothing wrong about that. Things should be how they are suppose to be. But of course the most important moral is the first, about the dark arts being bad." "Excellent answer." Zan nodded. Quote:

Needless to say, Evangeline didnt fancy this warlock that much. "But when he overhears people saying he doesnt have a wife and such, he decides to find himself someone to marry to. Eventually, he does, but the girl tells him she needs to know he has a heart." This was the grooosss part. Eww. "So the warlock shows her his hairy heart, which is kept in a crystal casket in the dungeon. This was one of Evangeline's least favourite tales, but it still fascinated her. "In the end, they both die."
But what lessons could they learn from that? Her Mother had never really talked to her about that tale, since she thought it could be scary, so Evangeline wasn't sure. Hmm. "It teaches us ... to don't be afraid of love?" The sixteen year old attempted, dearly hoping she was right. Otherwise, it could be very embarrassing. "The warlock decides he doesnt want to fall in love because he doesnt want to be vulnerable and when you're in love, you depend on others, so yeah. But in the end, shutting his heart down for love and other emotions, turned him into something not very human." Evangeline suddenly smiled, struck by an idea. "It teaches us that love makes us human." YAY! "Love makes us human." Truebridge repeated with a nod, "And the stupid mistakes we make while we are in love, make us even more so." Quote:

At this feast, the girl tells the warlock that she needs proof that he has a heart. When the hairy heart does not come easily out of the warlock's chest, he cuts it out with a dagger, therefore killing both himself and the witch."
"First of all, ewwwww," Anna said, making another disgusted face. "Second of all, I think the story teaches us to not attempt changing the way things are naturally meant to be---whether that attempt at change be magical or...well, normal. The warlock should have just let his life take the natural course it was designed to take, but because he didn't he denied himself a happy life, and ended up destroying not only his own life, but an innocent witch's life, as well. I think it also teaches us not to be selfish, because let's just face it. It was because of the warlock's own selfish desires that he and the witch died so early." "Insightful answer Anna. Thank you." Quote:

With his hand still raised, Plymouth continued on. "I don't like this one, much. Too violent, you know? The gist of it is some dude grows a hairy heart cause he wanted to, and then he lost who he was. He got caught up in "trying to fit in". I mean, besides learning not to covet your neighbor's wife OR GIRLFRIEND, the lesson learned is just be yourself. If you want to grow a hairy heart, then by golly, grow a hairy heart. Don't change just because that's socially normal. Be yourself and don't carry knives. That's the lesson learned. And don't steal your step-brother's girlfriend."
"It is quite violent." Truebridge agreed, "Matters of the heart often are, so it reflects real life quite realistically in that respect." Quote:

He raised his hand anyway, although he couldn't exactly fake the level of excitement he'd shown earlier in class.
"Professor, I kind of got from this story that it is unnatural to be without emotion or feeling, and it keeps you from being truly human. The warlock wanted to be impervious and ended up being incapable of actually enjoying the world around him. Unfortunately, the cautionary note in the story is that once you work so hard to keep from feeling anything, you really never are able to be human and normal again." And end up being completely boring and making your best mate/step-brother hate you. Forever. Yippee. "Well it reduces your chance at normality, I'm sure." Truebridge nodded, apparently without any emotion whatsoever.
Nodding again at Vannie and Raiden to come up to the board, Truebridge asked the next question "What relationship did Beatrix Bloxam have with the tale of the Warlock's hairy heart?"

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Copernicus raised his hand. "Bloxam accidentally overheard an original telling of this tale when she was a small child and apparently prone to listening at keyholes," he grinned a bit at that. He too was guilty of keyhole listening, but never really got anything as juicy as a story of horror and mayhem like this one. "She was so traumatized by the hearing that she took to her bed and developed an odd habit of sleepwalking that was only cured by her door being sealed each night. She also refused to even attempt a translation for the Toadstool Tales."

She tells of how she overheard her father telling it and how she became ridden with thoughst of the story that it gave her sleepwalking fits."

| Mrs. Alex Turner *asterisks user* Secret Door "Unlike the other tales, I don't think Beatrix Bloxam rewrote this particular one for her Toadstool Tales." Evangeline said after raising her hand. She wasn't exactly sure, since she had never read it, but she thought she had once heard her Mother talk about it. "I think she overheard her aunt telling this tale to her older cousins when she was younger and got pretty traumatized. Then she got all weird and every night sleepwalked to that same door. That doesnt make much sense because why would you want to come back to a place where you had heard something that had scared you?" The Prefect pondered on this for a moment, looking positively confused, before shrugging her shoulders non-nonchalantly. "Anyway, her Father started sealing her door every night aaaand problem fixed." |

Nodding again at Vannie and Raiden to come up to the board, Truebridge asked the next question "What relationship did Beatrix Bloxam have with the tale of the Warlock's hairy heart?" "But it's so... weird..." Jake couldn't help himself from commenting. The continuity of it all was messed up and it bothered him. "I just... don't get that..." he shrugged one shoulder and smiled slightly at Professor Truebridge before glancing nervously at the cat. It was a weird little thing.
Raising his hand again, Jake tried answering without sounding like a complete imbecile. "I don't know much about that, but, from what I've heard, I'm guessing she reeeeeeeeeally didn't like it, sir..." he shrugged. He was usually one to delve into the history of fiction, rather than reading it, but he hadn't gotten that chance yet. "Maybe she... erm..." Jake bit his lip. "Freaked out?"
Pot, meet kettle.

Anna raised her hand and said, "When she was a child, Bloxam had a habit of listening in on conversations via keyholes in doors. It was through a keyhole when she first heard a retelling of "The Warlock's Hairy Heart." The tale scared her so much that she ran to bed, developing a sleepwalking habit shortly thereafter. Bloxam's sleepwalking was only cured by her door being sealed each and every night." Anna didn't really blame Bloxam too much, either. The warlock and his scary heart were both downright frightening...and disgusting, too.

Cela raised her hand, "Professor, Beatrix Bloxam wrote in her diary that she had overheard the tale being told and it traumatised her and she never quite recovered. Her father had to stick her door to stop her from sleepwalking. She couldn't find a way to sugar coat that story and so it was never included in her toadstool tales."

| Double Agent Stamps! Abby raises her hand. "Beatrix Bloxam never recovered from accidently hearing the story. Every night she would walk in her sleep to the key hole she used to easedrop on her aunt. Her father had to perform a sticking charm on her bedroom door to stop Ms. Bloxam. She was so tramatized she was unable to write a more sanitized version of the Warlock's Hairy Heart." |

Daphne raised her hand with a sigh. "Beatrix Bloxam was a bit of a snoop as a child, of the worst kind," added the blond in a whisper to herself as she curled a strand around her finger. "She was listening through this keyhole as she probably did every night, and overheard the tale being told. Naturally, she was so frightened out of her wits she ran to her bed that night. As karma would have it, her post-traumatic stress was so that she developed sleep-walking tendencies," continued Miss Hopton, unable to keep a little laugh to herself. "Oh, sorry," she apologized and coughed. "In any case, her Father used a nice sealing charm on her bedroom door to keep her from gallivanting around the house in her nightwear. Unfortunately for Bloxam, she never did quite get over it so when she settled down to write the toadstool tales, The Warlock's Hairy Heart wasn't included."

| ♥Dunkin | Pixie's Precious Pea | kpop goddess | sneaky sounder | forever slytherin♥ Gulping slightly, Raiden got up and went to the board. Lessons. Lessons. There was a definite one, but there had to be more than that... Lessons in the tale "The Warlock's Hairy Heart: - Trying to avoid feeling anything will, in the end, backfire and end up hurting you even more.
- Invulnerability may seem like a good thing, but it really wouldn't be.
- To quote from the past, 'To hurt is as human as to breathe'. Take that away, and you're not very human.
- The thing you view as a weakness (i.e. the Warlock views his friends falling in love as them falling prey to a weakness) will probably in the end be the greatest strength.
- Using dark magic to sever your heart from the rest of your body is probably not in your best interests.
- Don't cut out your heart in an attempt to become invulnerable and then put it back in years and years later to prove to a lady that you have a heart. You'll probably both die.
He turned away from the board, blushing a bit at not being able to find more lessons in the story he liked so much, and then, raising his hand just a tiny bit, he answered the question being asked.
"Miss Crazy Lady Bloxam got the living daylights scared out of her when she overheard her auntie telling her cousins this story... she said it was an accident, but I've fallen against keyholes by accident and I don't stay there long enough to hear whole faerie tales," he said doubtfully. "But apparently, because it scared her so much, she didn't try to rewrite it."
Thank Merlin.
He went back to his seat and sank into it, face still pink from embarrassment over not being able to figure out more lessons in the tale.

"Anyway, her Father started sealing her door every night aaaand problem fixed." Quote:

- After hearing his servant whispering about him not having a wife he decides to find one, so he can make everyone else jealous

| Vanessa the Snot Girl l Rachels Rule | rock, tumble,&roll ❆ adorable coffee bean After sitting back down, Vanessa listening to the question before raising her hand. "Well..the story is about a king who wants all the magic of the world. In my opinion this could show how magic can make people be greedy, and want to take it away from others."

Kayla raised her hand, "Well in this story we learn that magic cannot bring back the dead. It also gives early mention of Animagi. Babbitty being able to transform herself into a rabbit. And that some muggles like the king for example believed that he could become a wizard just by waving a sticks around and saying a few magic words."

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Copernicus raised his hand. "I think the story shows that Beedle recognized the fundamental misunderstanding that Muggles have about how magic works, believing they can collect it or somehow work magic through sheer force of will. And I also think that we can see that Beedle was more interested in his story telling and his moral than in magical accuracy. He certainly took liberties in his stories with what is actually possible, and that is well illustrated in this story."

| Mrs. Alex Turner *asterisks user* Secret Door Points of interest? Hmmm. Evangeline raised her hand. "Well, it's considered to be the tale that respects magic's rules the most." The Prefect said - that sounded like a point of interest to her. "Oh - and it was one of the first times that any reference to Animagi appeared on literature." |

"I like the fact that the extortionist became the victim in the end. Funny that," quipped Daphne while jotting down the notes. "Greed can lead to one's own fall from grace--in this case shame. You want everything and yet you end up with nothing. It's also fair to mention how silly muggles can be--a crooked stick won't make you a Wizard."

Anna quickly copied down the notes Vanessa and Raiden had provided and then raised her hand. "Professor, I think a notable point of interest is the fact that when the King in the story calls for someone with magical ability to assist him in learning magic, a muggle, not a real witch or wizard replies. I found this interesting, because the reason no real witches and wizards replied is because they know, without a shadow of a doubt, that magical ability is not something that can be simply taught to anyone. They know that in order to perform actual magic, you must be born with the ability to do so. A muggle responded, because muggles, innocent as they are when it comes to our magical world, believe that magic is simply made up of tricks that can be taught to anyone willing to learn them. I think that particular point in the story is a good example of the differences between how a wizard and witch sees magic, and how a non-magical folk sees magic."
