Front Desk

A polished oak desk, located behind the study tables, sits in the center of the library. A few low shelves contain books that have been returned or books that are on hold. Behind that desk, sitting upon a stool, is the librarian, her head bent over a few rolls of parchment or a book.

As you approach, Madame Kohan looks up and greets you with a warm, friendly smile. “Good day. How may I help you?” She is eager to assist anyone; whether it be retrieving a particular book, giving recommendations, or perhaps even sharing a story or two with a student or colleague.

Set walked up to the front desk and asked the librarian, "Sorry, it's my first day here. Do you have any books on helga Hufflepuffs uncle, Polarius. I'm not sure, but I think I may be related."

Syd 01-21-2009 11:43 PM

Rian entered the library, a huge smile on her face. Not only was she happy to be in the library, and too see Madame Kohan again, but she was excited to see if there would actually be a book here about the topic she wanted.

She waited patiently behind another girl, a first year by the sound of it. When it was her turn at the counter, Rian smiled at the Librarian. "Hi, Madame Kohan," she said cheerfully. "I'm back." she said, holding up her arms. "I have a question...do you have any books on Merlin?" she paused, thinking about how stupid she was going to sound. "I wanted to know if he had all ten toes..." she trailed off and let her odd question hang in the air.

"Oh, no worries, dear. We've all had our first days here." She replied with a smile. As he made his request, she listened intently and thought for a few moments before replying. "I'm not sure if we have anything particularly on him, but if you look up Helga Hufflepuff or look in Famous Wizards through the Ages, you may find what you're needing. If not, come back here and I'll try to help you a bit more."

Once she had finished speaking to Set, Madame Kohan turned her attention to the next student in line. "Hello, Rian! It's nice to see you again. Did you have a nice holiday?" Once Rian had made her request made, Angela wrinkled her forehead and nodded slowly. "Well, I'm certain that we have books on Merlin, but...ten toes?"

She had to laugh at this. "Well, that's interesting indeed. I'm not sure if you could find that information, but it doesn't hurt to try, I suppose. You should find the books on the second floor under the M's or under Famous Wizards through the Ages."

Rian nodded to the librarian. "I had a great holiday," she said happily. "And you?" Rian blushed when the lady repeated her stupid question. She laughed nervously and bit her lip.

"Well, you see...I was in an interesting conversation with a few other Ravenclaws...and I just wanted to know if they were joking, or, well, not." she shrugged to show it was no big deal if there were no books on that particular subject. She nodded slowly as she put the instructions in her memory. "Hmm, I guess I'll check, then," she laughed.

"It was quite relaxing, though I am glad to be back here at Hogwarts. It's a place that is easily missed."

As Rian spoke of the reason for her question, Madame Kohan smiled again. "Well, I suppose I would be interested in such as well. Do let me know what you find out."

"Of course. Downstairs, the third, fourth, and fifth bookshelves. That should be where you find the Famous Wizards through the Ages as well as History of the Founders of Hogwarts." She answered promptly.

Daffy.Potter 01-22-2009 08:59 PM

Livvy walked into the library. Aww... she sure loved the smell of books. She walked towards the front desk with a large smile. "Hello Madame Kohan," she said. "How were your holidays?" Livvy asked, politely. Manners, manners, Livvy. "I'm looking for a good book to read. Any suggestions?" Livvy asked, knowing full well that Madame Kohan was always happy to give out suggestions. Sweet lady she was.

Rian nodded in agreement. "It is." She agreed, "I love it here." She sighed a bit sadly, then perked up again.

She laughed and nodded again. "Okay, I'll be sure to." she promised. She offered a 'Thank you' to the librarian and turned around murmuring "Famous Wizards Through the Ages" and "Second floor...M" over and over.

Set walked up to the front desk. He asked the librarian "I went down and looked and found a note in the book that said to look in another book called 'A Study of the Early Life of Great Witches and Wizards'. Where would I find that book?"

Carry his new found book, Vined Plants Most Vicious, Ludo made his way to the front counter. There a familiar face stood smiling.

With a grin Ludo set his book on the counter. "Hello Madame Kohan! Great to see you!"

Christine walked up to the front desk of the library a little nervous. She had made the decision to try and figure out what was going on with herself. She cleared her throat. Hello Madame Kohan, how are you doing today? She asked then starting to chew her lower lip. She didn't know what exactly she was looking for, but she hoped Madame Kohan would be able to help her. I need your help. I'm looking for a book that has information about peoples inability to control their magic, or something discussing how extreme emotions can effect a persons magical powers but I dont know exactly where to look.

Sasori walked up to the front desk and asked the librarian "I'm sorry to trouble you, but do you have any books on Muggle ailments?"

"I do believe there are quite a number of students who love it here, but you've still got a few years left to enjoy it." She pointed out.

"You're very welcome." With that said, she turned to the next student.

"Hello again, dear." She greeted. At his request, she turned and pointed towards the very first set of bookshelves. "It should be found there, more than likely the third or fourth shelf at the very end."

"Well, hello Ludo! It's very nice to see you as well. Starting the year off with a good book already, are you?" Picking up the book, she glanced at the title before opening the back cover.

With a tap of her quill, she signed out the book and handed it back to the Ravenclaw. "Is Herbology one of your favorite subjects?"

"I"m quite well, thank you for asking. And yourself?" It was obvious that something was troubling the young girl, but perhaps it was something that she did not wish to speak of. In which case, Angela would not push.

At Christine's request, Madame Kohan frowned slightly as she pondered over possible subject matter that could pertain to what the Hufflepuff was looking for.

"Well, dear, I can try to do a bit of research for you in regards to inability to control magic but I believe we have at least one book discussing the subject of emotions and magic. Its title is A Psychological Look into Magic. You can find it on the second floor, middle set of bookshelves."

"Oh, no trouble at all. That's what I'm here for." She answered with a wink. "Muggle ailments? You're quite in luck. I have such a book right here; I wasn't able to return it to the shelves just yet."

She handed the young Slytherin the book titled All You Ever Wanted to Know about Muggle Ailments and Treatment.

He took the book back. "Thank you. Have it back in two weeks, correct?"

Ludo looked around the library from his position at the front desk. "And let me add that if you ever need some student volunteer work done around here, I'd like to be the first to know." He smiled, unsure how to describe the feeling this room gave him...like being at home.

Jenn skipped in the library, happily singing,"Books, Glorious books!". Finally reaching the front desk, she grinned up at Madame Kohan. "Hello! You wouldn't happen to have some books on Merlin, would you?"she asked, grinning impishly at her.

Hannah Leigh walked up to the desk.
"Hello Madame Kohan." she smiled. "Do you have any books on the Salem Witches? Like the burnings," of course the Librarian would know.

She chuckled lightly. "I didn't really care for Herbology much but I did enjoy Potions." She admitted. "Correct! Two weeks and I'm sure you'll be ready to check out another book by then."

At Ludo's offer to be a volunteer for work around the library, Madame Kohan took his words with a nod and a smile. She was sure that he was feeling the pinch of the house point crisis at the moment. All houses in the negatives before classes truly began! "I'll keep that in mind, Ludo. Thank you."

"Hello Jenn, I see that you're in quite the good mood." At the mention of Merlin, she raised a brow. "Funny...Rian was just here asking about the same subject. You wouldn't be looking to see if he had 10 toes, would you?"

Ludo headed for the doors and exited the library, content.

Rian felt sort of disappointed with herself when she stepped back into the line at the front desk. She hadn't found a book on if Merlin had every toe, and that was a bit disappointing. But she had made up for the lack of information on that subject for finding a book that might actually help her with her school work. Maybe.

When it was once again her turn at the counter, Rian hefted Charm Your Own Cheese, by Greta Catchlove onto the counter. "Can I check this out, please?" she asked, standing on her toes.

Spork! 01-27-2009 09:52 PM

"Thank you." Hannah nodded, and, with a smile, left the front desk. She glanced around at the other people and looked down. Had they seen her surveying them?

HippogriffLover94 01-28-2009 12:58 AM

Amelia pull Amanda up to the front desk. Honestly, afraid of the librarian? There are things to be afraid of here, but its certainly not her. Amelia smiled, and said "Hello, my friend here and I found our books. Could we check them out now please? I think we do it here..."
