| | |  CoMC Lesson 3 :: Dragons!
Professor Morgan couldn't help the small smile that slowly formed on her face as each of her students timidly placed their wands in her waiting hands. Finally, after weeks of planning, everything was in place for what would surely prove to be the most spectacular lesson of her teaching career. Looking up, her smile widened. There was not a cloud in the sky. Not that rain would have changed the course of the day's lesson, but she couldn't help but notice how well the sun accentuated her mood.
"Come along then," she said ushering the group forward as the students arrived, her bright blue-green eyes sparkling with excitement as she watched the last few stragglers running down the rocky hill from the castle. "Today we are going to be studying one of my favorite magical creatures. Dragons!"
"Before we begin, I'd like to take this time to make my expectations for this lesson extremely clear." She said eying the class with a serious, no-nonsense expression. "As you can plainly see, there is not a dragon with us now... That is to say, no dragon with us yet." She continued. "After some strenuous planning, I have managed to arrange to have one present shortly. This means that everyone has to do EXACTLY what they are told. I will be taking points left and right if I see you take one step out of line with a dragon around." She said. "Wands won't be necessary. WE are here to protect you." She said, clearly emphasizing the 'we' but offering no other explanation.
"Now, if we are all clear, everyone please take out your textbook at this time and turn to page 257." She instructed, pointing her wand to the board. With a swish of her wrist the notice quickly disappeared and a large map now hung in its place.
"Who would like to volunteer to come up front and mark where each dragon reservation can be found?" She asked.

Cela raised her hand, "So you don't hurt yourself or the dragon while you rummage around trying to get the venom and so you don't waste the venom by not collecting properly. Ummmm.... So you can do it quickly and not have to use spells or potions that make subdue the dragon for longer than neccessary."

Antipodean Opaleye (mild, non fatal Cytotoxic venom)
Aglyphous (grooveless) venom delivery system
The Antipodean Opaleye lacks any groove in their teeth for venom to run down. Instead the venom drips down the teeth from any available opening essentially saturating the maxillae. In order for envenomation to occur the dragon must chew on it's prey which is time consuming, but as the venom is meant to incapacitate rather than kill, this is as efficient as it needs to be.
Norwegian Ridgeback (Highly Venomous Neurotoxic venom)
Proteroglyph (front groove) venom delivery system
Proteroglyphs (front groove) dragons have a groove that has run so deep that both sides of the groove overlap eachother forming a channel for the venom to flow. A lumen is located at the base of the tooth where venom awaits ejection, while a discharge orifice lay on one side near the tip. An adductor (jaw closing) muscle is attached to the glands so that when the dragon bites down the glands get squeezed and a stream of venom flows into the prey.
Proteroglyphs are fixed fanged, That is to say they are unable to fold up their fangs when not in use so the fangs must be kept short enough so as not to puncture the lower jaw.
Hebridean Black (Moderate Hemotoxic Venom)
Opisthoglyphous (rear grooved) venom delivery system
Opisthoglyphous (rear grooved) dragons have elongate fangs located on the top of the back of their mouths. These fangs have a groove running on the lateral side of the fang which helps direct venom into the prey. Since the fangs are located posteriorly the dragon must make a point of taking a big bite into it's prey in order to assure envenomation.
Portuguese Long-Snout (Moderate Hemotoxic Venom)
Primary Proteroglyph (front groove) and secondary Opisthoglyphous (rear grooved) venom delivery system.
The Portuguese Long-Snout has a dual venom delivery system, the fangs are connected to the same venom glands.
Peruvian Vipertooth (Highly Venomous; Primary Neurotoxic venom, secondary hemotoxic venom)
Primary Solenoglyphous (pipe grooved) fangs and secondary Proteroglyph (front groove) fangs.
Solenoglyphous (pipe grooved) fangs have the groove so deep now that the outside of the teeth completely cover it forming a pipe for venom to enter. The two fangs are attached to a short highly movable maxillary bone. This bone allows the dragon to fold its fangs up in its mouths. This ability to fold up the fangs allows for greater fang length. the fangs hyperextend (up to 180 degrees) but with the separately jointed maxillae the fangs can move individually as well. So a vipertooth can decide whether or not to move one fang or two. Inject one side or two. The amount of venom control in a vipertooth is astounding as is their venom reservoirs.
The secondary Proteroglyph (front groove) fangs are short so they do not puncture the lower jaw. The Peruvian Vipertooth is unique in having a seperate reserve of venom for each set of fangs. These secondary fangs give the Vipertooth the ability to spit their venom, generally as a defensive measure.
The secondary fang tips have beveled, spiral apertures on the anterior surface just above the tip where the venom is ejected. The spiral groove forces a spin on the venom allowing for greater accuracy when spitting.
Ethan opened the wand case he'd been carrying and carefully drew out his old wand, still split almost directly down the centre by the secondary fang of a juvenile Peruvian Vipertooth. the Fang was the length of his hand and a couple inches thick, his wand splintered around it.
"The dragon that we are dealing with today did this to my wand. This is one of the secondary fangs of a Peruvian Vipertooth." He held the wand so the class could see, carefully replacing it in the wandcase after just a moment. "You can never fully predict the behaviour of a dragon, but one thing for sure about the Vipertooth is that it is fast." Ethan paused.
"It will not be awake and therefore it's speed will not be a consideration, and I will be ensuring it does not wake up for the duration of the lesson. I am going to see to the dragon now, and Professor Morgan will bring those of you who have behaved along shortly." Ethan looked at Iliana and nodded at her, tucking his wandcase under his arm.
"I'll see you in a few moments." With that, Ethan headed off in the direction of the forbidden forest, to double check all preparations.

Herminny thought, wow if a dragon can do that to a dragon experts wand it's a good thing the only dragon she would be seeing today espcially with the nutty proffessors around. Herminny was starting to get so exited cause she knew she would soon be seeing a real dragon up close and personal for the first time ever. Then Herminny's thoughts shifted to the nutty professors and she seriously hoped none of them did anything stupid when professor Nico brought the dragon out, if that dragon woke up Herminny was not so sure of her ability to stay cool,calm, and collected.

Herminny opened her textbook and found several answers answer quite quickly and raised her hand and said, "Dragon hide is used to make clothing and shields". She knew several more answers but she had the common courtesy to give other students a chance to answer unlike a certain Ravenclaw girl in the class who was starting to get on her nerves but she decided she would stay cool calm and collected anyway cause it was the best she could do cause she learned she can't change people, she had already tried that, it ended in disaster.

Paris had been two busy munching on the chocolate frogs to answers the previous questions but she had eaten almost 4 of them and she was totally full now and could talk. She raised her hand. "Well the venom can be used in poisons and some wizards collect it to sell to muggles so they can make other medicines and pain relievers just like they do with snake venom. The scales were used as chain-mail in the middle ages and the skin is used for various types of gloves." She explained.

Abby writes down the notes Professor Trubridge put on the board. She then raises her hand. "Professor Morgan, dragon's blood is suppose to be able to cure a variety of ailments from ulcers to kidney stones. Dragon's blood is also the only known substance that can dissolve gold. Dragon's blood is also suppose to be highly addictive and should only be administered by a qualified healer in life threatening situations. Dried dragon's fat is used to cure ulcers. The dragon is also suppose to have a jewel-liked third eye called dracontia. It is believed to be an effective antidote for various poison. It's pretty resistant to most spells and its pretty, looks kind of like snakeskin. Fashion changes and so to does the kind of hide that is in highest demand."

She was going to pet it if it was the last thing she did!
She kicked the seat ahead of her where Anna was and then she whispered "That true?" and she popped two ice mice in her mouth... "The bladder? Like where they pee? Ewwwwww..."

Disgusted expression still on her face, Anna turned towards the little girl seated next to her professor and nodded. "It is. I read it in 'Quidditch Through the Ages.' Oh, and yes, that's where they peed," she answered. Anna eyed the Ice Mice the professor was popping into her mouth. Dude, yhe professors were lucky! They had all the good candy! Anna had grown sort of used to having multiple professors in class with her. It was odd how they knew they had to teach their own class, but at the same time, they thought they needed to attend the others. This little regression problem needed to be solved...and soon!
