He smiled to the class and decided an introduction would be best. "As some of you may know, I am Professor Ian Ashby, your new Charms professor. Yes, I am new here, but I am confident that you all will make my adjustment here as smooth as butter.
"Now then, to get things started, who can tell me the difference between Charms and Transfiguration? I find that, even to this day, I sometimes have trouble making the distinction. However, you all look like a smart bunch; perhaps you can learn me a thing or two! Remember to raise your hands!" Cadence raised her hand. Professor, in transfiguration we learn how to change or create the nature of something, whether by transfiguring it into something else, creating it, or sometimes even by giving life to inanimate objects. In charms we learn how to manipulate objects and people while they retain the same nature.

Rian sat quietly in her chair desk, her quill poised to take notes. She looked over to her left and saw that she was sitting next to Liz. She gave the girl a smile, but that was it. She knew talking would not go over well with Professor Ashby.
She frowned slightly when the other students answered his question before she got a chance to, but instead wrote down her own take on the difference between Transfiguration and Charms on her parchment. After writing it down, she quickly scrawled Charms Notes - Lesson One across the top of the page in her elegant handwritting.

That is very interesting that you brought up the changing of molecules for transfiguration, while for charms, the molecules of the object that is being charmed remain the same. Cadence raised her hand. Professor, in transfiguration we learn how to change or create the nature of something, whether by transfiguring it into something else, creating it, or sometimes even by giving life to inanimate objects. In charms we learn how to manipulate objects and people while they retain the same nature. "Hello there. Unfortunately, miss, you are late, so I must regrettably take five points from Hufflepuff. However, for your answer, you have earned one point." Quote:

"Charms are spells that manipulate an object or person, such as changing its physical properties or, as another example was given, summoning. However, when charming an object, it remains the same object. With Transfiguration, you are changing the physical properties and inherent nature of the object, therefore changing it into a different object.
So! Now that we have that out of the way, who can give me some examples of charms? Please ONLY provide ONE charm each in order to allow everyone to offer up their suggestions." |

Daphne was glad to know Ashby was encouraging answers from everyone. She happily raised her hand to answer. "Well, there's the Patronus charm!" she responded. It was strange she would provide that answer, since the closest thing she could produce to a patronus was a wisp of silver smoke.

She raised her hand. "The banishing charm," She added. Quote:

Rian looked up at his next...question type thing. She could name a ton of different charms, but, of course, she couldn't. So she just thought of one she could say.
As one came to mind, she frowned slightly. It was a way to defend yourself...but the word 'Charm' was in the name. So it was a charm, right? She shrugged and raised her hand. It never hurt to try. "The Patronus Charm, Professor?" she asked, her hand still raised. Her brow was furrowed, and curiousity was in her mind. Was it a charm?
