Set wispered over to Cadence, so that only she could hear, "Aguamenti is actually the aqua jet charm!" He laughed. He had read the charms book front to back!

She raised her hand. "The banishing charm," She added.

She smiled at her sister. She waved her over to the seat behind her.

As one came to mind, she frowned slightly. It was a way to defend yourself...but the word 'Charm' was in the name. So it was a charm, right? She shrugged and raised her hand. It never hurt to try. "The Patronus Charm, Professor?" she asked, her hand still raised. Her brow was furrowed, and curiousity was in her mind. Was it a charm?

"One point. Tell me, Mr. Newell, are you a mind reader?" Ian chuckled and refocused his attention to the raised hands.

"Excuse me. You there!" Ian said, pointing to the rather snarky student in the back. "Did I not just say that this was a safe learning environment? Five points for your blatant disrespect of the learning environment I have created and your smart mouth. While you are technically correct, the 'water charm' is a perfectly acceptable alias for Aguamenti, as 'aqua,' the Latin root from which the name of this charm originates, means 'water.'"

Ian shook off the situation from his mind and returned to the lesson. "As Mr. Newell suggested, there is the Alohomora charm, on which we will be focusing today. So...what does it do?"

highjinx 02-09-2009 12:58 AM

Raising his hand again, he spoke. "It... um.. opens locks I think?"

Waddles 02-09-2009 12:58 AM

Alohomora? Oh, Juniper knew about that. She raised her hand. "The Alohomora charm unlocks locks," she said, "unless they're specially spelled so that it won't work on them."

Mell 02-09-2009 12:59 AM

Kayla raised her hand once again. "The Alohomora charm is used to unlock all doors and perhaps windows...well anything that needs to be unlocked."

Felixir 02-09-2009 01:00 AM

Jake raised his hand. Was it a trick question... sneaky... But Jake, thrusting aside his suspicions said, "The 'Unlocking' Charm, sir? If that's it's proper title..."

Waterloo 02-09-2009 01:00 AM

"Alohomora is the charm that ... unlocks locked doors, right?" Clifford asked, hand in the air again. "Well, I bet it works on any lock.. like padlocks and stuff too."

Angie 02-09-2009 01:00 AM

Willow raised her hand, "Alohomora is a spell that is used to open locks on doors and windows."

Crayola 02-09-2009 01:00 AM

The Alohomora charm? Frowning a bit, Evangeline raised her hand once more. "The Alohomora charm causes a locked door to open .. unless, of course, it's protected with spells against that."

Syd 02-09-2009 01:01 AM

Rian smiled slightly, raising the hand she had just set back down on her desk. "Alohamora opens locks, sir. Most use it to open doors, but it could also be used for things such as trunks, and things like that, I'm sure." she cleared her face of the smile and lowered her hand.

Tommehbell 02-09-2009 01:02 AM

Paris raised her hand. "Well sir its a charm that unlocks things that have been locked with simple means. It won't unlock things that have been magically locked with heavier charms and spells." She offered.

Anna Banana 02-09-2009 01:02 AM

Anna raised her hand. "It's a spell that causes a locked door to open," she said. So this was the spell they were learning about, huh? Maybe it would come in handy with all these secret rooms and secret objects popping up all over the castle. Hmm...

Lissy Longbottom 02-09-2009 01:03 AM

Cale wrinkled his eyebrows when the professor asked him if he was a mind reader. Wha? On the contray, Divination was one of his worst subjects.

Ahhhhh, THAT was what he meant! Cale had just happened to stumble upon the subject of this lesson. He raised his hand once again. "Well, Alohomora is used to open locks, and also opens doors sealed with the Colloportus spell protecting them," he added.

noodles 02-09-2009 01:03 AM

Willow smiled and nodded at her sister.

She raised her hand once again. "Alohomora is a charm that causes a locked door to open." She replied.

BeccaBear 02-09-2009 01:03 AM

Allie raised her hand.
"It is used to unlock locked doors." she said.

hufflepuff_keeper_11 02-09-2009 01:03 AM

Set raised his hand. "It unlocks locks, it is the oppisite of Colloportus!, the locking charm." Set said.

CruppieMom89 02-09-2009 01:03 AM

Cadence raised her hand. Alohamora unlocks doors, unless they are locked with a spell that won't allow it to be unlocked with Alohamora.

Levicorpus 02-09-2009 01:05 AM

Sloanne rose her hand daintily, not sure if she could be seen from the back of the room where she sat. "Um- It unlocks locks, Professor." She spoke, trying not to sound unsure of herself. "Unless the lock has some certain enchantments on it, preventing Alohamora to work, I think."

Hedwig18 02-09-2009 01:05 AM

Ana raised her hand "It opens a door, at least a "easy" door to be opened."

EquestrianGal88 02-09-2009 01:06 AM

Freya raised her hand, "Alohamora is a spell that can aid in unlocking certain doors or locks. But it has its limitations, as does any charm." 'Wish it would work all the time...'

Torchwood 02-09-2009 01:06 AM

Qaz raised her hand and repied, 'It opens locks that aren't guarded against it.'

Rosa Chispa Princessa 02-09-2009 01:06 AM

Herminny was so tired, but she managed to lift her hand into the air and say with a slight slur, " Alohamora is the spell used to unlock things that don't have a charm on it to stop you from using it.

druidflower 02-09-2009 01:15 AM

Tobi raised his hand again, he understood the theory, it seemed, it was always the practical that went horribly awry. He wasn't entirely sure about this one though "It opens mechanical locks, doesn't it? Doors that have been locked magically should remain locked anyway."

RedRabbit 02-09-2009 01:30 AM

*Gabben raised his hand.* "The Alohomora charm is known to open most locked doors and some places like chests and such. It will not always work on all doors though. Not if they are magicaly locked anyway."

"As has been mentioned, the Alohomora charm cannot open any and all locks, although it can open most. There are some charms that can prevent Alohomora from working, but we won't be going into those.

Anyway, I have one last question before we begin the instruction of the charm itself. Does anyone know the origin of the name/incantation for this charm?"
