Noticing the way Cameron was eyeing his friend wand, Jake put his hand on the desk. "We're gonna getcha through this, buddy..."

Jake nodded at Paris as she sat down. "Heyyyyy..." Seeing Cameron's wand on the table made him remember ris own. Picking it up, Jake eyed it warily. It had been pretty mean to him before... and... D'OH! Which end did the magic come out?

"Erm..."Jake looked around at anyone who might help. "Which end is the business end?"

Oh, Jake was looking forward to this lesson combined with Cameron's farting wand. Indeedy. Erm...

Ok, so he'd wait for the lesson to start, then figure which end of the wand was dangerous. They might not even use 'em... but Jake had his parchment and stuff ready in that instance... Well prepared, aye.

Walking into the Charms classroom, Liz looks around and finds a seat by the window.

Herminny drowzilly walked into class, she hoped she would not fall asleep on the Charms teacher but she was not making any promises. As soon as Herminny hit into a free seat half sleep walking she slouched into it and her head hit the table and she instantly woke up but only just, this was going to be a long class for Herminny, she just knew it.

She giggled at the exchange between Clifford and the Professor. She liked this professor. He was the first one to make her laugh in class and that was a great sign. She hoped his classes would be just as fun.

She leaned over and pinched his cheek softly. They hadn't spoken in a few days since their little incident in the room. But they were friends and they both got over that. She smiled at him as she didn't want to talk in class and get into trouble.

Cam felt something touch him so he quietly screamed and turned to see what it was. Or who it was, since it was the girl who told him no-poking at that portrait place. Remembering that scene made him think of chocolate and that made him think of eating his very own wand again. He basically punched his own little stomach to stop the thoughts but he just couldn't do it. And he did it, ignoring what Jake said. Oh he was a freaky boy that was licking the tip of his wand! It tasted ... delicious! But if the professor saw any sooner he would have gotten detention for hurting his own wand! So he stopped and just sat there, reading his notes.

But nothing was guaranteed, after all, so when Juniper walked into the classroom she took a seat in the middle of the room. Not too close to the front, yet not so far away that she would be far from other students. There was always strength in numbers.

"Good day, Professor," Juniper said politely as she took her seat.

"Good day," he said, nodding to the girl.

"Hello there, young man!"

"That is correct, sir," replied Willow, a smile curling upon her lips, as she tried to look not too smug. To be honest, she was not expecting a new professor to know who she was, but that did not mean she was not pleased. On the contrary, actually. "Did you play Quidditch back in day, Professor?" Way back in the day, at that. The man didn't look so young, after all.

Ian was quite smug with his own astute observation. "Excellent!" he bellowed.

"As a matter of fact, I did. Back in my day, I was also the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain."

"G'day to you as well!"

At first sight, the Prefect had been anticipating this Ashby bloke to be sorta like Lord Ogre. He actually seemed pretty decent though, and Clifford nodded. "Yeah, not to bad, thanks Sir." He said, pulling out some parchment and his quill incase he had to take notes. "Be better after a bit o' Charms."

"Excellent. Well, I've got just the remedy for you, then."

Becca hurried into the Charms classroom. This had been one of her favorite classes ever since she had came to Hogwarts. The whole new professor thing? That might not go well. But, maybe he wouldn't be so bad? Becca turned her gaze to the man, saluted politely, and greeted, "Good day, sir!" Hah. Way to be a suck up. And with that, she took a seat. He sort of did look like a big grump, though.

"Good day! I like your enthusiasm!" Ian said as he saluted back to the young girl.

"Alright, alright. Simmer down, now," Ian said, attempting to shush the crowd. "It's time to get started."

He smiled to the class and decided an introduction would be best. "As some of you may know, I am Professor Ian Ashby, your new Charms professor. Yes, I am new here, but I am confident that you all will make my adjustment here as smooth as butter.

"Now then, to get things started, who can tell me the difference between Charms and Transfiguration? I find that, even to this day, I sometimes have trouble making the distinction. However, you all look like a smart bunch; perhaps you can learn me a thing or two! Remember to raise your hands!"

Waterloo 02-09-2009 12:02 AM

Clifford raised his hand. "Charms are spells that enchant an object... to behave in a way that isnt normal for that object." Did that make sense? "Whereas Transfiguration is magic which changes one object into another."

highjinx 02-09-2009 12:02 AM

Cam raised his hand as quick as he could. "Transfiguration is like the changing and vanishing of objects while Charms is more like types of spells that have to do with enchanting an object and making it do odd things such as levitation."

Angie 02-09-2009 12:03 AM

An Old Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain? Willow definitely liked Professor Ashby.

"Well, the difference is, sir, that in Transfiguration we can change the physical form of a determined object, while in Charms we simply, erm... charm them? Sort of like give them a faculty it doesn't normally have," said the girl, her hand in the air.

Lissy Longbottom 02-09-2009 12:03 AM

Cale raised his hand. "Well, Charms are spells that cause an object to behave in a way that it normally would not, and transfiguration spells change the appearance of something," he explained. He was pretty sure that was right, but then again, he could be wrong. That did happen sometimes.

Golden Monkey 02-09-2009 12:03 AM

He put his hand into the air, knowing he would probably get this wrong. "Well professor. Charms is when you want something to do something or to do something to someone, when Transfiguration is when you want to make something out of something or nothing." He frowned, that didn't sound right at all. What had a read? Listening to the others he ducked down in his seat, looking around anxiously.

Crayola 02-09-2009 12:03 AM

A small smile flickered to Evangeline's lips when she remembered that Professor Pierce had asked the same thing in her class last term. Hmmm. She sorta remembered the answer, and after a minute's thought, she raised her hand. "Well, Professor, a charm enchants an object to behave in a way that's not natural to it, but without changing the object itself - unlike Transfiguration spells that change inherent nature of an object." Or something like that.

Anna Banana 02-09-2009 12:04 AM

Anna excitedly raised her hand. She was pretty sure she knew this answer...or, at least, she thought she did. "Charms are a type of magic spell concerned with enchanting an object to behave in a way that isn't normal for that object. Transfiguration is magic which changes one object into another," she said.

Lizasaurus 02-09-2009 12:04 AM

Raising her hand "Professor - Charms can cause objects to do something, where Transfiguration changes items."

BeccaBear 02-09-2009 12:04 AM

Allie raised her hand.
"Charms teaches general spells and wandwork, while Trasnfiguration teaches the art of changing of the form and appearance of an object and the vanishing of objects." she said.

Mrs. Weasley 02-09-2009 12:04 AM

Transfiguration spells enable us to change one object into a totally different object like changing an owl into a water class. Charms are spells that enable us to perform magic such as the accio spell which allows us to make thing like broom come to us.

Kayla raised her hand. "Well with a charm you are enchanting an object to do something, whether to make it fly, to clean something or perhaps to even summon or banish something. With transfiguration you are basically turning an object ot maybe a person into something else. You are changing the features or even duplication."

Eclipsed 02-09-2009 12:05 AM

Chewing on his lip, Terry threw a hand up in the air, 'With transfiguration we're changing an object's nature completely aren't we? And it's whole molecular structure's being altered? Whereas with charms, you're adding properties to the object, or making it do something, but in essence still remains the same item?'

feeheeheeny 02-09-2009 12:06 AM

Becca grinned at the man as he appreciated her awkwardness. She stuck her hand in the air and spoke, "Charms and Transfiguration are really quite similiar, as a general statement. But while Transfiguration is about complete transformation, Charms is used more often in willing an object to do one’s bidding like... masking the appearance of a rat by 'changing' it to a glass. Right?"

SweetAussie 02-09-2009 12:06 AM

Agie raised her hand. "Professor charms can change or manipulate things to do something different, or act in a way we want. And transfiguration transforms the object into something different, so it can preform the task. In charms the actually object isn't transfigured. Just charmed."

hufflepuff_keeper_11 02-09-2009 12:07 AM

Set raised his hand. "Well, charms is the study of learning spells, charms, jinxes, and curses. and transfiguration is the study of changing the appearance, make-up, or potition of an oblect." Set said. He was pretty confident because this is the subject he had read-up on the most and pre-studied the most.

Hedwig18 02-09-2009 12:11 AM

Ana raised her hand "Charms is learning about spells that can do different things to people, animals or objects, transfiguration changes the essence of the thing itself, at least for a period of time" she said

LeapFrog 02-09-2009 12:12 AM

Daphne wanted to raise her hand, but she had met Professor Ashby before and didn't want to embarrass herself by giving a daft response. No, perhaps it was better if she remained quiet until she could give an adequate answer. She was not looking forward to this lesson at all. It would be her first big lesson involving spells, and with her wrist injury, she didn't have much confidence in that.

She looked over at Cam and had to suppress a giggle as she watched the weird little first year.

She didn't bother answering the question as about 20 other students answered first. he didn't need them all to just repeat themselves all over.
