| | Basic Arithmancy Lesson 1
As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see wooden desks and chairs arranged in a circle. Professor Shackleton has provided a number of cushions in a myriad of colors and textures that are stacked by the door for you to choose from to match your comfort and liking. Two walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, filled with a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. The other two walls of the room are covered in framed pictures and posters of a very old man doing mathematical calculations, a map of the Mediterranean, a witch carrying a large wooden number seven, a chart converting letters to numbers, and many more pictures with a number at the top and people exhibiting various qualities below.
When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman in powder blue knee-length robes sitting behind a desk made of dark angelique wood. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a small stack of thin, leather-bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, several copies of the class textbook, and a small pouch that she keeps very close by her left hand. She smiles welcomingly at you as you enter the classroom and makes a small gesture for you to take a seat in one of the many desks in the circle. OOC: This lesson is for first, second, and third years ONLY. Any students in fourth year and above who post will be dismissed. |

Sakura nodded at the Professor that made sense. Looking at Jack she quietly asked, "where did you begin to have problems?"

Or don't they have anything to do with it?" "Good question. We do not use multiplication or division in Arithmancy, so they are unrelated to what I'm referring to."
Professor Shackleton could sense that she was losing some of the students. "Perhaps if I show you the four methods, you'll understand better. I am going to start with Adding Across, but before I show you this, I want to explain that we will not be using this method in my class. This is simply for informational purposes and for you to know how to avoid the addition traps. "Let us take the date July 6, 1944. If you were adding across, it would look like this," Professor Shackleton wrote in the air. Quote: ADDING ACROSS
July 6, 1944
7+6+1+9+4+4 = 31
3+1 = 4
"The single number 4 is the root number, or the reduced number. While the answer is technically numerically correct, the reason I don't like to use this method is that for Date of Birth Numbers, you lose the chance of finding Master Numbers, which you'll soon see is the case with the example I gave you. For the record, Master numbers are rather rare and very important, so we do not want to miss these. So we will not use adding across. Understood?"

Lyra nodded. That did make sense. She raised her hand. "So adding across contains reducing the number.

Rightttt.OK.This was making a little sense to her.
She got the adding across thing, but wasn't that happy that it wouldn't be used in class.Something she understood and she won't be using...typical.
Scribbling it all down,Sarah sighed again and glanced at the girl next to her.
She had written her name on her parchment so Sarah could see.
Nodding,Sarah gave a little wave of hello before writing down... "Hi Lina,I'm Sarah.Nice to meet you." she turned it towards her classmate so she could see.

John had totaly lost the Professor now, she was talking goblygoo and John didn't want to say anything so he just copied what was on the board. He was wondering what 31 had to do with 1944. He couldn't get his head around it so he just looked at the Professor and waiting for the next thing she would say to the class.

Jake sat listening, and when he saw it, it all clicked, and audible "Ohh" could be heard and he was about to try that out with his own birthday, until Professor Shackleton mentioned she didn't like to use that with birthdates. Something to do with Master numbers.
And Master numbers being rare and important.
Jake tried to write quickly, the ink smudging, going through everything on the parchment three times so it stuck in his head.

Emalyn nodded. She loved examples, but she was always terrible at figuring out the meaning of math in her head all alone. She was greatful that Arithmancy didn't involve multiplication or division...this could very well be her favorite subject some day, if she paid the right attention.

Sakura was nodding along, she got that. "Professor what is a master number and why are they rare?" She asked hoping that others didn't know the answer either.

Cam looked at the professor and nodded when she tried to show the class how to do it. He understood it, kinda. On his parchment he wrote the example the professor did. So Arithmancy is about numbers, letters, and inner energy? Pretty interesting.

With another flick of her wand, Professor wrote the following in the air: Quote: REDUCING FIRST, THEN ADDING TOGETHER
July 6, 1944
7 + 6 + (1+9+4+4)
7 + 6 + 18 = 7 + 6 + (1+8)
7 + 6 + 9 = 22 22/4 She then explained, "In this method, we reduce any and all multi-digit numbers that we start with, like the year 1944, to a single digit number before we add them to the other single digit numbers of the date. So, we add the one, nine, four, and four together to get a total of 18. But 18 is still a double digit and we want a single digit, so we reduce it again to 9. Now we have all single digit numbers, so we can add them together. We get a total of 22, which is a Master Number that we missed using the first method of addition.
"For those who don't know, a Master number is a double digit number composed of a repeated single digit number. The Master Numbers we work with are 11, 22, and 33, though technically 44, 55, etc. are all Master Numbers too. Master Numbers are the only double-digit numbers we do not reduce. "I'd like for you all to use this second method on the date December 17, 1972. I'll be walking around to check your answers."

Looking back at Jack Sakura said, "If you want we can meet in the library after class and I'll help you there. It will give me more time to explain." What she didn't add was that it would give her more time with him before he blew up at her again.
She then got to work on doing the question. December 17, 1972
(1+2)+(1+7)+(1+9+7+2)
3+8+19=3+8+(1+9)
3+8+10=21
21/2
Sakura looked at her working out and decided that it was incorrect raising her hand she said, "Professor can I please get some help? I understand the concept, however I'm having trouble applying it with the double digits for the months, since I'm not sure if I should reduce them or not.

Noelle looked dumbfounded at the teacher then attempted to start;
December 17, 1972
12 + 17 + (1+9+7+2)
12+ 17 + 19 = 7+ 6+ (1+8)
12 + 17 + 9 = 38
38/2 Oh goodness, epic fail, right there on my paper. she thought she got everything else except the last number.

Lyra wrote on her notes:
December 17, 1972
12 + 17 + 1972
(1+2) +(1+7) + (1+9+7+2)
3+8+19
3+8+(1+9)
3+8+ 10
3+8+(1+0)
12
1+2
3
She also raised her hand. "Is 222 a master number, even though its really a triple, not a double, digit?

Theo looked at the number and scribbled it down.
Right:
17 + 12 + 1972
1 + 7 is....he counted on his fingers
8
1 + 2 is
3
And finally 1 + 9 + 7 + 2 is... this was harder, he needed to use his fingers twice.
19 which is 1
8 + 3 + 1
He got the answer to be 3. He hoped he was right.
