As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see wooden desks and chairs arranged in a circle. Professor Shackleton has provided a number of cushions in a myriad of colors and textures that are stacked by the door for you to choose from to match your comfort and liking. Two walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, filled with a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. The other two walls of the room are covered in framed pictures and posters of a very old man doing mathematical calculations, a map of the Mediterranean, a witch carrying a large wooden number seven, a chart converting letters to numbers, and many more pictures with a number at the top and people exhibiting various qualities below.

When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman in powder blue knee-length robes sitting behind a desk made of dark angelique wood. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a small stack of thin, leather-bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, several copies of the class textbook, and a small pouch that she keeps very close by her left hand. She smiles welcomingly at you as you enter the classroom and makes a small gesture for you to take a seat in one of the many desks in the circle.

OOC: This lesson is for first, second, and third years ONLY. Any students in fourth year and above who post will be dismissed.

Mariel looked around a bit confused. Everyone seemed to be giving the professor much more information than she asked. Shrugging, she raised her hand and said, "One symbolizes beginnings, while 9 symbolizes completion."

Shana was now wondering if she'd answered her question wrongly because everyone seemed to be giving professor Shackleton what all of the numbers meant.She started to get worried because this was the first question she'd thought she answered right.

"Professor," Miranda started raising her hand "The numbers 1 to 9 represent the cykle of life... 1 being the beginning, the birth" that makes sense right? "then theres number 2 connecting with life, 3 is creation the new things you do when you grow up, 4 is building - like building up your life, 5 changing is for the growth you do, 6 is nurturing your life, 7 reevaluating what is important in your life, 8 is expanding your lifestyle making it better and fill it with positive energy and 9 completing...death I guess... Could be that you have completed your journey, like a positive thing? Miranda gulped, did this make any sense at all?

2 conection, reaching out to those around you
3 creating, making freinds, whether it be good or bad only time will tell
4 building, bonds, knowing you have people that have you're back and you have theirs, and a ready mind for whatever comes you're way
5 changing, puberty, kid mind set to adult mind set by what you learn
6 nurturing, motherhood, fatherhood, procreation, or just true love
7 reevaluating, mid-life crisis
8 expanding, realizing you've made it to a point in you're life that you know what matters in life and is glad fot it
9 completing, death

lifes journey, now it makes sense, you have lived you're life, learned all you could from mistakes you have made along the way, but hey lifes a growing process, and you're only fully grown by death.

Sarah had no clue what was going on.Arithmancy was probably her worst ever subject.Scanning the textbook for the answer she came across it in chapter 2.
Putting her hand up,even though others had answered,she replied to the question.
"Ummm Numbers 1 to 9 are the representation of a persons life.1 means Beginning or birth and 9 means Completing or death."
Putting her hand back down she prayed she got it right and didn't sound like a complete fool.

Professor Shackleton explained to the class an important point, "I understand that you all want to demonstrate that you've read the textbook by giving me lots of information. But if I ask for the meanings for numbers one and nine, I want only one and nine. I didn't ask for the meanings for every number, so I didn't award points to those who gave them to me. Following directions is very important in Arithmancy, and not just as it pertains to my questions in class. You have to be able to follow the directions when calculating each number, because if you don't, you will inevitably be confused and get the wrong answer. I don't make this point to sound harsh to those who gave information about all the numbers, because I completely understand that the desire to demonstrate your knowledge is innocent enough, but it is important that you recognize my instructions and follow them."

Not wanting to make the students feel put down, Macadrian brought a smile back to her face and moved the lesson along, "According to Pythagoras, there are nine stages to a person's life, and as your classmates mentioned, they are 'Beginning, Connecting, Creating, Building, Changing, Nurturing, Reevaluating, Expanding, and Completing.' Why do you think Connecting follows Beginning, instead of something like Changing following Beginning?"

He nodded his head while writing down more notes. Once the professor asked another question, Cam raised his hand.

"I think it means that... that because you're just after beginning your life and you're connecting to the world. It's common sense to not be changing right after you've just began."

Well before Changing you have to Connect to your surroundings and see what life is like before you try to Change yourself. Spence said after raising her hand. She hoped she didn't sound foolish.

"Because although your life does change a tiny bit, it doesn't change as much in the second stage of life. Also it is at this stage where things can go wrong I think. Like although there is the beginning things may change and completion may happen before the other stages can occur, therefore there is the connecting stage where your life becomes your own and you learn a bit more about who you are and who you will become?" Although she was answering the question she phrased it as a question as well. After all if it was wrong she didn't want to look stupid.

oops 1 AND 9 she thought i need to listen carefully. She raised her hand and said "Maybe because we need to connect with life and what it's the "life's objective". I think changing is more physical, like the changes in the body.." she was not sure about that answer

Miranda finally looked up from where she'd been furiously scribbling notes. Her hand went up timidly. "Professor? I think connecting is next, because once you're born you don't just jump into life...you have to connect to your parents, and start to learn what everything around you is...connect to the world and how stuff in it relates to you..."

She hoped that made sense. First answer in class and she was already rambling.

Lina found herself doodling while listening to the teacher and the rest of the class. Or maybe she was listening. Even she wasn't sure. However, something prompted her to raise her hand and answer. "Because the first step after birth is to connect to everything. Otherwise, if you're not connected, you have no sense of yourself or the world around you. Are simply are, and you've simply begun. To stagnate at the beginning is to not recognize the world around you, and not even your inner self."

Remember that when Pythagoras first devised the system of Arithmancy, he noted that everything in the world is made up of numbers, which represent their energies, so he applied numbers to the alphabet. Using the numbers 1 through 9, he came up with this chat that allowed him to decipher the meaning of any name. Once Pythagoras has the numbers to figure a person's name, he had a tremendous tool for seeing into the hidden essence of that person."
