| | Basic Arithmancy Lesson 1
As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see wooden desks and chairs arranged in a circle. Professor Shackleton has provided a number of cushions in a myriad of colors and textures that are stacked by the door for you to choose from to match your comfort and liking. Two walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, filled with a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. The other two walls of the room are covered in framed pictures and posters of a very old man doing mathematical calculations, a map of the Mediterranean, a witch carrying a large wooden number seven, a chart converting letters to numbers, and many more pictures with a number at the top and people exhibiting various qualities below.
When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman in powder blue knee-length robes sitting behind a desk made of dark angelique wood. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a small stack of thin, leather-bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, several copies of the class textbook, and a small pouch that she keeps very close by her left hand. She smiles welcomingly at you as you enter the classroom and makes a small gesture for you to take a seat in one of the many desks in the circle. OOC: This lesson is for first, second, and third years ONLY. Any students in fourth year and above who post will be dismissed. |

John raised his hands "He believed that everything in life could be predicted through patterns or cycles of numbers. Higher vibrations contained more spirtual force." What did John think about this. "Well don't some people think that he wasn't a mathematician at all?" He was sure he had read that somewhere.

Natka paused in her furious note-making to answer the Professor's question, raising her hand.
"Pythagoras belived everything could be related to Maths, and the the numbers 1-9 all represnt something in our lives. Basically, he thought our lives are all a cycle, a nine-part cycle where each part is represented by one of these numbers."

Nia bit her lip. Her brother had just got points! In Arithmancy! Meh. She raised her hand. "Pythagoras' school of thought was based on on the idea that everything related to numbers and maths through cycles. His ,ain reasoning was due to everything has a vibration of energy, and the higher this is the more force in nature it has. Equally the converse is true." She paused for a moment to regain her thoughts.
"The importance of things comes in terms of the Universe, as everything then as becomes a whole, a unity as it were. Thus there is a balance of numbers - and I guess one can use this fact to manipulate or erm, work out how to have a better outlook and position in life. A slightly unusual philosophy at the time I believe." She hoped her statements had made sense. That was what she understood afterall.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sloane W. Fordyce First Year | Cheesy Mac Macadrian listened to each of the students interpretations and learned quite a great deal more about the individuals in her class than about Pythagoras' theory. She could tell which ones read the textbook and came to class hoping to have the theory explained to them, which ones sought another source on Arithmancy to help explain it, and which ones truly tried to figure it out for themselves. None of them were wrong, just all very different, and Macadrian appreciated the diversity. "This is a very difficult concept to understand. I apologize for asking so much of you on your first day, but this theory is the foundation of everything we are going to do in this class over the course of your entire education. You may not fully understand it until you're on your way out the Hogwarts' doors, but it is important that you try to grasp the concept.
"Pythagoras believed that every being, every object, everything had its own inner energy, from you to me, this desk, this school, everything. And, especially for people, we can operate at a high or low energy, which you can think of as the light and dark in each of us. If you're representing the height of your energy, you'll be exhibiting the positive qualities of that energy. But on the flip side of that, each person is capable of moments of darkness, or negative vibration of that energy.
"And every person and every object in this world are related to one another through these energies, so that all toegther, our energies create an undivided unity. How I act today could affect you tomorrow because we're all connected. Arithmancy can help you understand that connection. Pythagoras believed that numbers were the measure and form of energy in the world, hence his system of Arithmancy."
Macadrian gave them plenty of time to write that down before asking her next question.

Spence took vigorous notes as the teacher talked. She shook her head at herself for being a fool for not realizing it sooner. If only she had thoroughly read the chapters.

Miranda was getting confused, she had no idea what Arithmancy was before starting this class, and all she knew was from the textbook. But that's what she was here for, to learn and she wrote down everything she could in her notebook.
This was pretty interesting, and as she finished writing, she took a deep breath and waited for the Professor.

Theo's face screwed up completely. What on earth was inner energy? Isn't energy momving anyway. He scratched his little head. He was rather confused, and wanted to see his Lyra again. She would make his head feel better.

Natka wrote down all that the Professor was saying as fast as she could, doing her best not to leave anything out.
She hadn't thought Arithmacy would turn out to be as interesting and... well, deep, as it seemed to be now.

Cam started to take some notes about the person who introduced Arithmancy to the world. The professor asked another question but tons of people put their hands up already. He didn't mind since he didn't understand the question himself. All he knew was that Pythagoras was some guy who made Arithmancy and thought that everything had some sort of spiritual force. Professor Shackleton spoke again to them and explained them the answer which probably meant that all of the answers were wrong, or not the one she wanted.
He dipped his quill into the ink and started to write what she had said. After writing all of that, he raised his hand.
"Professor, so what you're trying to tell us is that the spiritual force inside an object is the same as our inner energy, and that because of all of the negative or positive energy, it makes the world an "undivided unity"?" Bleh, he hoped that made sense.

Bleh, he hoped that made sense. "Well, yes and no. We're all the same in that we all contain energy, but each person and object has a different energy. We're not all the same type of people, just like there are tons of different objects. But all of our energies are related, even if they're not the exact same for all of us, and that makes an undivided unity."
Professor Shackleton walked along the circle, eyeing everyone's notes as she passed. She then smiled and exclaimed, "Alright! Enough of the super challenging stuff. Let's move on to something a bit easier, but just as important. As I mentioned, Pythagoras believed that numbers were the measure and form of energy in the world. He believed each number, one through nine, had a unique, symbolic meaning that corresponded to the stages of a person’s life. Who can tell me what stages the numbers one and nine represent?"

Sakura was diligently writing everything down. Finishing quicly she waited for the next question.
"1 is the beginning of a persons life or energy whereas 9 is the completion of that life or energy. I think." Sakura said while her hand was up.

Theo raised his hand. At least he could read, "Number one is like the start. Number two is joining things. Number three is creating things. Number four is builing things. Number five is changing things. Number six is nuturing. But I don't know what that means. Number seven is re-looking at things. Number eight is making things bigger. And number nine is finishing things." He smiled. Man that was hard.
