| | Basic Arithmancy Lesson 1
As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see wooden desks and chairs arranged in a circle. Professor Shackleton has provided a number of cushions in a myriad of colors and textures that are stacked by the door for you to choose from to match your comfort and liking. Two walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, filled with a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. The other two walls of the room are covered in framed pictures and posters of a very old man doing mathematical calculations, a map of the Mediterranean, a witch carrying a large wooden number seven, a chart converting letters to numbers, and many more pictures with a number at the top and people exhibiting various qualities below.
When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman in powder blue knee-length robes sitting behind a desk made of dark angelique wood. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a small stack of thin, leather-bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, several copies of the class textbook, and a small pouch that she keeps very close by her left hand. She smiles welcomingly at you as you enter the classroom and makes a small gesture for you to take a seat in one of the many desks in the circle. OOC: This lesson is for first, second, and third years ONLY. Any students in fourth year and above who post will be dismissed. |

Emalyn nodded and made notes on her parchment. She knew what she had done wrong, and she was determined not to make the same mistake again. Though she had her doubts...she often became very confused in the process of doing even the smallest amounts of math.

Cam tried to compare the difference between the professor's work and his. All he needed to do was add a few of the problems he missed in. He actually understood it! Whoops. He wrote 27th instead of 17th... Bleehhhh.

John was so confused now that he banged his head on the table, it was starting to hurt with all this thinking. It was now offical he was dumb he couldn't figure out a single think. He felt like he was about to cry but didn't because the room was full of people. What did any of this gobblygoo actual mean.
He heard the Professor say something about two over methord great he thought, he couldn't get his head around this one what chance did he have with two more. He was releved when she said that they didn't have to do them.

Oh, that made sense. Jake looked at his work. He'd gotten the 3, but in the wrong method. Reduce the multi-digit numbers before adding the total date, then reduce the final figure. Jake wrote that on his parchment, figuring if it was wrong he'd have to figure it out.
Looking at his notes, Jake figured he would forget what was beneath all the smudges the minute he left the class, so he began neatly copying out the notes while there was a few moments free after writing his notes.

Paris was of course as lost as ever. She hated Arithmancy. Any class that made her feel stupid was not a class she was fond of. She had to vanish her answers and start all over again because she didn't get 3.
She wrote it out again carefully like Professor Shackleton showered them and then she got the correct answer. She waved her wand on her calculations highlighting them in a acid green so she could remember where they were for her homework. Quote:
December 17, 1972- 12 17 1972
(1+2) +(1+7) + (1+9+7+2)
3+8+19
3+8+(1+9)
3+8+ 10
3+8+(1+0)
12
1+2

Sakura quickly scribbled in the missing steps.
"So Professor, this would resemble muggle factorising in a way wouldn't it?"
She looked at Jack to show that she knew what to do know and would be able to help him later.

Hannah Leigh was happy she got the right answer. She was not, however, going to learn the other two methods later. She would quite like to meet people. She looked at the girl who had asked about the three and nodded vigourously.
"Yes, does it?" she echoed. Was it something to do with homework, et cetera? Or was it just a date, a random branch of numbers. Pftt. That wasn't it.

22/4? 22/4?
"Professor Shackleton, would this be 22 = 4 and not 22/4?"

James was actually starting to understand this stuff. It didn't seem so bad, after all. He wrote: December 17, 1972=
12 + 17 + 1972=
1+2 + 1+7 + 1+9+7+2=
3 + 8 + 19=
3 + 8 + 1+9=
3 + 8 + 10=
3 + 8 + 1+0=
3 + 8 + 1=
12=
1+2=
3
Proud that he had gotten the answer correct, he smiled.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sloane W. Fordyce First Year | Cheesy Mac Professor Shackleton was impressed with the students' hard work and felt that they'd covered enough for the day. "We've discussed all the topics I had planned for today's lesson, so we're done for now. Next lesson we will discuss the specific energies and properties of numbers, so you may want to review chapters three, four, and five before the next lesson.
"Your homework will be due in one week's time. I do not accept late homework, so be sure to get yours done in time if you want credit. I've posted it on the blackboard." And as she spoke those words, the following assignment appeared in writing: Quote: Basic Arithmancy Lesson 1 Homework
1. Explain how Arithmancy can help the following people in their understanding of others:
a. Parents (1 pt)
b. Mates(1 pt)
c. Teachers (1 pt)
d. Businesses (1 pt)
2. Write an inch on what you find most interesting about Pythagoras' life and/or beliefs, and why they are so intriguing to you. (1 paragraph of minimum of 4 sentences.) (3 pts)
3. Why is it important to reduce first before adding, rather than simply adding across? (1 pt)
4. Using the second method of addition demonstrated in class, find the single digit number for the following date: May 13, 1984. Show your calculations for full credit. (2 pts)
OOC: This assignment is due Saturday, January 31st by 11:59 EST (according to the SS clock). It is worth 10 points.

Natka stared at her parchment for a moment, thinking about what Professor Shacklebot had just sid and explained, and suddenly it struck her. She saw her mistake, and she understood this method of addition; she breathed a sigh of relief, happy to finally know what was happening in the lesson.
Looking up, she saw the homework being set. Copying it down, Natka put all her stuff away.
"Thank you, Professor Shacklbot, and see you next lesson," she said on her way to the door.

Lasca nodded her head. Okay, December 17, 1972.
12 + 17 + (1+9+7+2)
okay so (1+2) is 3
and (1+7) is 8.
then (1+9+7+2) is.... 19 which is actually 1+9 which is again 10.
Then 3+8+10 is....21?
No...her face lite up... cause it would be 3+8+(1+0) which is...
12. She looked up and hoped she had done this right. She kind of got the concept but still was a little iffy.

Sakura quickly wrote down the homework, with any luck she would get it done that night. Getting up and walking towards the professor she asked, "Are there any books that you would recommend we look at other than our textbooks for information on this subject?"

Emalyn tucked her parchment into her bag, followed by her quill. She looked around for someone she might know to talk to on the way out. She sat in her desk, waiting for a few of the students to clear out first.

Sarah stared at the homework as it appeared on the board.
She couldn't do that! It was too hard.
Banging her head against the desk repeatedly, she let out a whimper.
Why,why, why did she have to take this class?
Scribbling it all down, she sat and waited to be told they could go.

James quickly wrote down the homework into his notebook. He was getting ink smears all over his notes, though, because he wasn't use to using actual ink. He managed to write something legible down, though, and he looked up. "Thank you, Professor. I think I do actually understand it," James said, before picking up his books.

22/4? 22/4?
"Professor Shackleton, would this be 22 = 4 and not 22/4?" "Well, 22 is a Master number, so we don't like to simply reduce it to a 4. So we write it as the master number, followed by a slash, then the reduced quantity, so that we can see all aspects of the Master Number."
