As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see wooden desks and chairs arranged in a circle. Professor Shackleton has provided a number of cushions in a myriad of colors and textures that are stacked by the door for you to choose from to match your comfort and liking. Two walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, filled with a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. The other two walls of the room are covered in framed pictures and posters of a very old man doing mathematical calculations, a map of the Mediterranean, a witch carrying a large wooden number seven, a chart converting letters to numbers, and many more pictures with a number at the top and people exhibiting various qualities below.

When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman in emerald green knee-length robes sitting behind a desk made of dark angelique wood. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a small stack of thin, leather-bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, several copies of the class textbook, and a small pouch that she keeps very close by her left hand. She smiles welcomingly at you as you enter the classroom and makes a small gesture for you to take a seat in one of the many desks in the circle.

OOC: This lesson is for fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh years ONLY. Any students in first, second, or third year who post in this thread will be dismissed.

Professor Shackleton returned each of the student's greetings and arose from her chair. Walking around to the front of her desk and then to the center of the circle, Macadrian surveyed each of the students around her before beginning, "Greetings everyone! Welcome to Advanced Arithmancy. Majority of you already know me, but for those that don't and for those who have tried to block me from their memories, my name is Macadrian Shackleton. Feel free to call me Professor Shackleton, at least to my face. You may call me whatever you please behind my back, so long as you make it creative.

"Anyhow, as you may have noticed, there are no students younger than fourth years in this room. I have divided the course into two sections so that my older students may have the opportunity to explore more advanced topics with more in-depth analysis of the numbers and their meanings. With that said, I must remind those of you who are in your fifth and seventh years that you have a very demanding year ahead of you, with your OWLs and NEWTs, respectively. I have set up another classroom off the Arithmancy corridor for your use. There is an assortment of reliable texts which will provide you with all the information you could possibly need to prepare for and pass your Ministry-administered exams. And of course, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have pertaining to those studies.

"But we won't waste any more time discussing OWLs and NEWTs. This term we're going to explore the more advanced and specific contents of a person's name. Today's lesson will cover the Balance Number and the First Vowel. Please open your textbooks to chapter eighteen."

Livvy walked into the classroom and waved to Professor Shackleton. "Hello Professor!" she said, glad to be back in this class. She looked around for a familiar face, and spotted Karma, Plymouth, and Copernicus. "You three amazing people wouldn't reject me sitting here now would you?" Livvy asked them, grinning.

She noticed that class was beginning to start, so Livvy immediately sat down without waiting a response from them. Livvy then turned her textbook to Chapter Eighteen.

Emiliano quickly heard a voice, it was attracting so he turned around and spotted Karma, sitting by Copernicus. He waved back and walked over to sit with them.

Agie stopped talking once Mac started and leaned across her desk to open Curts book to chapter 18. She glanced at him and smirked.

Elizabeth looked up as Professor Shackleton opened the class, and then pulled her textbook over to her, opening it to chapter eighteen as instructed. Nobody so far had talked to her, so she didn't see much reason to worry about anything else at the moment.

Karma smiled at each of the newcomers. Her head snapped to attention as Professor Shackleton began to start the lesson.

OWLs and NEWTs. Oh, how she didn't miss those any one bit. She flipped through her book to chapter eighteen and rested her eyes on the chapter.

"The Balance Number," she said quietly.

Good thing she had read ahead.

Camira frowned at all the people chatting away. Really, how rude. She ignored them, however, and opened her textbook to the correct chapter, just as they'd been told to do. Some people, it seemed, felt they didn't need to listen. Honestly. She skimmed through the chapter, kick-starting her brain into Arithmancy mode and waited for the professor to give further instructions.

Anna listened as the professor explained how she'd reorgranized her classes to allow the older students a more in-depth study of Arithmancy. She'd even set up an additional Arithmancy classroom, which Anna made a mental note to use if need be. OWLs and NEWTs were coming up, and a lot of the students would be studying more so than usual, including Anna. Anna nodded to the professor and then opened her textbook to chapter eighteen.

Copernicus flipped his book open after giving Karma and Livvy a distracted smile. He was not to be swayed from academics once class started and his focus was on. He settled down to skim the page and familiarize himself with the text.

Barry looked around the classroom and nodded at everyone he knew and then opened his text book. Would this class ever end? He stared at the chapter and tried to soak it all in. Trying.

Curt nodded solemnly to Agie, and agreed in silence as she said ‘we’ll talk later’. Shackleton was getting up from her seat now and it wasn’t a great idea.

Busting out in a small bit of laughter, Curt gave Agie an appreciative nod. “Nice one.” He whispered, shaking his head slightly, he would feel sorry for Lyra but then again, she probably was going to get Agie back twice as worse. So for the time being, he felt sorry for Agie.

Professor Shackleton delivered her speech, and did it very well. He gave the Professor a nod of appreciation for her return as he opened his book to the chapter she requested. Arithmancy, sweet, sweet, Arithmancy.

Almost late for class, Lyra strolled in to notice that her dearest and best friends, Agie and Banana were already here. Gryffindors!. She snorted to herself making sure to grab a PINK pillow and sat next to Agie.

"Fancy seeing you here before me," she smirked then noticed Curt and waved. This was going to be interesting. "Hello Professor," Lyra smile to Shackleton as she readied herself for class.

Jayne's mind flicked unpleasantly over the memory of the OWLS. Not a great time in her opinion. She had done fine on them, but in her mind it was a waist of time.
Reaching down to open the top flap of her school bag, she pulled out the appropriate text book and flipped slowly to Chapter 18 as instructed. Her quill and parchment were already out for her to take notes.

Opening her messenger bag, Willow took out her thick Arithmancy book with a little effort, before opening it in the right chapter. The Balance Number. That sounded. . . complex. Which was probably, Willow was sure, exactly the case. It wasn't like Arithmancy had ever been a simple subject.

More like the complete opposite of simple.

Plymouth felt like the teacher needed a round of applause. She used such large words and weaved them together so eloquently. Unfortunately, what she had said escaped Plymouth. He looked around to see what everyone else was doing.

While doing a bit of looking, he checked in on Karma. She wasn't making fun of him, so she was doing good. And, naturally, Anna. He skimmed past that girl named Elizabeth that he'd met in the Leaky Cauldron...

"Perni. What did she say, mate?" Plymouth asked, leaning to look over his shoulder. He got the page number from Copernicus and did his own turning.

Maybe Plymouth should have been in the younger version of the class.

Emiliano's attention turned immediately to the professor who told them to turn to chapter eighteen. When he heard Karma say what was it about, his eyes widened a little bit. He was not good in calculations nor in predictions, but he had promised to get a little more studious for all those OWL's...

He turned to the book to the chapter and let the concentration work inside his brain.

Pushing her hair behind her shoulder, Professor Shackleton stepped slowly around the inside of the circle while inquiring, "What information does the Balance Number give to us? And please try not to completely regurgitate the textbook if you can at all help it." With a grin on her face, Macadrian continued to pace in a circle, awaiting the students' responses.

Agie raised her hand. "Professor, The balance number can help guide us, showing us the best ways to deal with difficult or even threatening situations. We are all different and therefore we have different internal responses. Some may be by thought and thinking things through and others shying away and being more withdrawn. The are those who have great episodes of huge emotion, but are able to control them quickly and those who hold on to the emotions for ages, when they should just get over it already. The balance number can help control all of these and thus creating a balance." Agie was pretty smug with her answer.

Juniper raised her hand after a slight moment of consideration. "The balance number helps people solve problems," she said, putting her understanding of what the textbook said into as concise a statement as possible.

Upon hearing the question Shackleton asked, Evangeline looked down at the textbook for a second before raising her hand. "Well, we all go through hard times during our lives. Challenges, the textbook calls them. The Balance number simply shows us better ways to overcome those same challenges." She hoped that was right.

Emiliano quickly raised his hand and took a breath before starting to speak. Yes, the nerves got him. "The balance number as it's name says it...helps us go through the situations that may be difficult in our lives..." He said and lowered his hand, slowly.

Anna quickly raised her hand. "The Balance Number guides us through our most difficult and dangerous times. It assists us in learning the best ways to handle the problems that we encounter in our world," she said.
