Default Charms Lesson Two

Professor Shackleton entered the Charms classroom very slowly. Though she knew that Professor Hawkins would not be in there, she felt the need to let her eyes search the room for her. Convinced the room was empty, Professor Shackleton entered with two very large bags in hand, the odor from which was rather unpleasant, almost stinky feet-like.

As she reached the front of the room, Macadrian pulled a small rectangular table closer to her, laid out a blue checkered tablecloth and placed upon it the following items: two bottles of milk and two silver platters with dome-shaped coverings hiding their content.

She then stood beside the table, rocking slightly forward and back, anxiously waiting for students to arrive, knowing that all would be inquisitive about her presence in the Charms classroom, and more likely, Professor Hawkins absence.

Lizzie heard the girl's suggestion, and raised her hand to add Maybe it could be a good way to stop mice for example from finding the cheese and eat it?

Sapphire raised her hand and instead of trying to find a answer why it would help she wanted to ask a question "Professor taking the smell out of cheese might be good so that mice and rats can't find it and eat it, but what about blind people how would that benifit them if that charm was used on them?" Sapphire knew that she would probably be ridaculed amoung the other Slytherin's for this question but in her mind she thought to her self "someone could easily do that as a mean prank"

Ugh this wont work. Miranda took a deep breath through her mouth and quickly waved her arm around as she said the incantation. "Odorus Subsisto Parmesan!" she yelled and quickly pinched her nose with her free hand.

Hmmm... maybe she should have started with the other cheese first... With her wand, Miranda poked the stinky cheese closer to her.

Taking another big breath, she moved her wand to her left, right then up, left and right. "Odorus Subsisto Stinking Bishop!"
Miranda breathed through her mouth again. Did she dare take a sniff?

Meredith tried the spell again a few times and everytime it worked better.
"Odorus Subsisto Parmesan" she said and finally, the odor was gone.
She wrote down what the other children answered and thought they were quite good answers. After she'd written everything down very precisely in her notebook, she began to draw a piece of cheese next to the title

Miranda held her breath. Carefully she sniffed for the blegh smell. Hmmm it doesnt really smell like stinky feet anymore! Miranda grinned, she had done it!
But there was still a weird smell lingering, must be the parmesan.
"Odorus Subsisto Parmesan" she said firmly. Oops Miranda had accidentaly jabbed the cheese, poking a hole in it with her wand. Blegh hopefully her wand wouldnt smell bad now. Miranda was lactose intolerant, the cheeses were making her nauseaous.

She heard the professors question and looked up. "Professor, is it so that one doesn't have to get nauseated by the smell of things?" she said raising her hand. "Or maybe so that animals wont get attracted to smells of food that youre keeping somewhere, or maybe so that the smell of the food wont pass onto another food?"

Patricia held her hand high before answering, "Apart from keeping your home from smelling foul because of foods or other sources of strong odors... I would imagine that if you had a sick person in the house, one that feels nauseous, it would avoid giving them the heaves. Pungent smells could provoke that, couldn't it?" She remembered her uncle Tenebrius being so sick that he couldn't stand any strong odors around him... certainly not this foul smelling cheese that she had just neutralized the smell.

Allie took the cheese and placed it on the desk.
"Odoris Subsisto Parmesan." she mummbled, then took her wnd and practiced the complicated looking wand movement. Once she thought she had it perfect. She pulled the cheese towards her.
"Odoris Subsisto Parmesan!" she said, while doing the wand movement.
Once she finished she looked at the cheese.
How do you know if it doesnt smell anymore?
She tried picking it up and sniffing it, but the room was so full of the stinky cheese smell, she didnt know if it had actually worked.

"Also, it could come in very useful during potion brewing. There are often some awful smelly ingredients that we are required to work with. This would help with that. Maybe even to take away the smell of a potion all together." she added.
"You bring up an excellent point and the one that I was mostly thinking of - using this charm allows you to eat pungent cheeses without being disgusted by the smell, but still allowing you to enjoy the flavor of a well-aged cheese! And your application to potion brewing is very original! One point to you!"

Then she added.
"And if you have stinky socks, you can use that spell and say to your mother that you already washed them. Oh, and some people might get nauseous if they smell a certain smell, and if you use the charm they won't."
"Imaginative application! Who are you surprising with stinky cheese?" Macadrian laughed before continuing, "Oh, I do like your idea of not letting the stinkiness of the cheese hide the lovely scents that may be in the nearby vicinity. A very good point. The word lac reminded Rapuznel of lactose or being lactose intolerant...which Ryan was, right? Hum.

She raised her hand and made a complete guess, "Uh, would this spell have something to do with the dairy stuff in the cheese?" Firmus....? "Maybe it hardens the cheese, like, makes the dairy creamy stuff firm up?"

Okay she might have just been spewing utter rubbish there but honestly, cheese was not Punz's favorite food. She preferred butter and/or shortbread cookies anyways.

Cale raised his hand. "Well, I'm guessing it has something to do with changing the state of matter that the cheese is currently in, probably from a liquid form, like milk, to a solid form like a block of cheese. I'm guessing it only works on dairy products too from the 'lac lactis' bit, cause that sounds like lactose." he suggested.

Astrid smiled at Professor Shackleton again. She knew there was a reason that she was her favorite professor. She just LOVED her! She listened with great interest as the teacher asked her next question. She raised her hand and said, "Well ma'am, if it was anything at all like the last spell, I would think that the name tells us a lot about what the spell does. It sounds to me like a spell to keep milk from going bad or changing the state the milk is in. Like causing it to turn solid, like cheese."

Patricia reached for her bag and pulled out her latin translation book. Hmm, she thought as riffled through the pages, taking note of the meaning of each word.

Her hand went up: "Firmus lac lactis...Firmus means to solidify, firm, strong. Lac would be milk... and lactus would kind of be the action of milk changing, i think! So the spell might mean that it turns milk to cheese?" she said as she turned the words in her mind. "Or at the very least, it makes it curdle." she added for good measure... again.

As she listened to each of the student's guess about the incantation, she found herself incredibly impressed by the students' understanding of Latin. They were quickly able to deduce the purpose of the charm based on its incantation. She offered, "All those who guessed that the charm changes the consistency of milk to cheese will be awarded two points! Nice work!"

Macadrian held her wand in both hands as she explained this spell, "This is actually known as the Cheese Churning Charm, in which you can take milk and alter its consistency to that of your favorite kind of cheese. Today, we are going to be making mozzarella cheese, which is my personal favorite, from either of two kinds of milk - regular cow's milk or buffalo milk. You will be allowed to choose which you want to work with.

"But first, let me show you the wand movement."
Macadrian demonstrated the motions as she spoke, "With your wand pointing down at the milk at a 45 degree angle, make a Z in one direction and then back in the other direction repeatedly until firm enough for your goal texture of your cheese. And remember the incantation is 'Firmus lac lactis.' You only have to say the incantation once, but you have to maintain your focus or else your milk will simply curdle unpleasantly and you won't be able to obtain the right texture."

Macadrian reached into one of the bags resting on the floor and pulled out a small ramekin for each student in the class. She placed them in a stack on the table beside the clearly labeled milk jugs and explained, "Please come up and grab a ramekin, fill it halfway with the milk of your choice and then head back to your seat. At that point, I would like for you to practice the incantation and the wand movements separately, and then put them together until you've created the consistency of mozzarella cheese. Good luck."

Penny walked to the table and got a ramekin and filled it half full with cow's milk. She went back and practiced the incantation. 'Firmus lac lactis, Firmus lac lactis.' she repeated. Then she picked up her wand and praticed. When she was ready she looked at her ramekin. "Firmus lac lactis." she said and waved her wand. When she got the milk to consistency she needed it, she sat back and smiled to herself.

Astrid walked up to the front and grabbed a ramekin. She decided to use the Buffalo's milk because it was something unique to her. Actually, before today, she had never even heard of buffalo's milk. It intrigued her. She filled the ramekin halfway and took the milk back to her desk. She sat it on the table in front of her and pulled her wand back out of her robes.

She began by pointing her wand down at the milk, making sure that she had the angle correct. Then she started making the Z motion in one direction and then back in the other direction. She practiced this moment for about 5 minutes until it felt smooth enough to add the incantation.

Firmus lac lactis. she said to herself, concentrating on the proper pronunciation. Then she cleared her throat and prepared to try to make some yummy cheese. She pointed her wand at the cheese again and tried to keep in mind what Maddox had said about enthusiasm. She started moving her wand along, in the lovely Z pattern and clearly said, "Firmus lac lactis." After a bit of time, she noticed that the milk was indeed solidifying. She kept up the motion of her wand a few moments longer, to ensure a good solid cheese and when it looked perfect, she laid her wand on the table and touched the cheese with her finger. It felt good. She sniffed it and it smelled like mozzarella. Completely ecstatic, she raised her hand and said, "Professor, I think I've done it."

Xehanna went up to the front of the class and grabbed a ramekin and filled it half way with cows milk. she walked back to her seat and set the glass down carefully. she pulled out her wand in attempt to change the milk. she said the charm twice in her head before actually trying it. Firmus Lac Lactis, Firmus Lac Lactus. "Firmus Lac Lactis." she said as she waved her wand in a Z formation and back again. the milk slowly changed consistancy and became motzerella cheese right before her eyes. wow that's amazing. she thought. she smiled brightly and her eyes turned deep purple. she was so excited she did it. and on the first try too!

Allie walked up and actually grabbed a ramekin of buffalo's milk. She wasn't to big on regular milk, and it seemed like most people were going for cow's, so she thought it would be good to try something knew. And its not liek she would have to eat it, right?
When she sat down the first thing she tried was the incantation.
"Firmus lac lactitis"
"Firmus latistis."
"Firmus lac lactis."

Finally! Thas like the touge twister.
Next she tried the wand movement, and she got that down really quick.
Now she was ready to make it into cheese.
"Firmus lac lactis!" she said, making the Z motions.
She fully concentrated on it, until it looked likemozzerella. She poked it to make sure.
It seems liek Mozzerella.
"Professor, I think its Mozzerella now."

Melinda walked to the table and picked up a ramekin, filled it with pure cow milk and headed back to her table, ready to practice the next spell.

OK. Forty Five Degrees of angles, then flip the wand like a Z, then...repeat that saying..." Firmus Lac Lactis..." She clearly said and the milk started to move like if it was accioed.
"Firmus Lac Lactis..." She repeated, and again, the milk started to take a consistence more thick than it was before.
"Firmus Lac lactis..." Melinda said the spell once again, glancing at the cheese taking the ramekin's shape.
"Firmus Lac Lactis.."
For the last time and now successfully, Melinda said the spell and glanced at the cheese, taking a Mozzarella shape. She smiled, proud of herself and smiled. She was tired now. Her head felt like, dizzy. Maybe it was the effort she had with her mind at the moment.

Pleased at the fact that he had earned two points, but still not happy about dealing with cheese one bit, Cale pulled out his wand again. He walked up and got his milk from the front, then went back and practiced the wand movements. Ok, fourty-five degree angles...flip wand like a Z...gah, this seemed overly complicated for a spell to turn milk into cheese.

Christine looked over to Diana I'm ok now that the bad smell is gone. It was making me gag. Christine walked up to the front of the class to get some milk. She decided to try the buffalo milk, grabbed some, and brought it back to her desk. She pulled out her wand and practiced the wand movements. She moved her wand in the shape of a Z in one direction and then in another. She kept on doing it, hoping that if she got the cheese perfect the Professor would let them eat it.

Patricia happily went to the front of the class to get her ramekin and cow's milk. Giving the teacher a guarded smile as she went back to her seat. She placed the ramekin on her desk and took her wand out again. Firmus lac lactis, Firmus lac lactis, Firmus lac lactis... she mumbled to herself a few times, getting a feel for the words themselves.

She then repeated the wand movements...a 'Z' movement, as the teacher had said, with a 45 degree angle. After zigging and zagging a few times, she felt confident enough to start the experiment. She aimed her wand and pronounced the charm clearly as she zigged once... but some of the milk sloshed over the sides of the ramekin. She frowned at the mess. Maybe her 45 degree angle was off? Concentrating a bit more than the last time, she tried a single zig or zag just to feel the control of the spell before attempting it for good.

"Firmus lac lactis" she said steadily, concentrating on the ramekin, making nice and smooth passes through the milk. After what seemed like forever (which might have been 5 or 10 minutes), she stopped to look at the consistency of the stuff in the ramekin. She poked it with the end of her wand. It seemed rubbery enough... like mozzarella should be. And there was some near clear liquid at the bottom too. "Should there be any liquid left after we're done, professor Shackelton?" she asked after lifting her hand.
