| | Arithmancy Lesson 2: The Challenges
Professor Shackleton unlocked the doors to her classroom and entered to see the plain white walls that had been present since the beginning of term. But she smirked to herself because she knew what lied underneath that illusion of pristine cleanliness - walls covered in painted numbers and calculations in an assortment of colors and sizes. And just as soon as all the students had entered and the lesson was ready to begin, Shackleton would lock the door and remove the spell for the illusion so that the students could enjoy their numerical masterpiece!
In the meantime, Shackleton arranged herself behind the podium, setting out her lesson plan and an open textbook, and waited for the students to take their seats. |

Trying to get the class on track and not have her students be side-tracked by her little sugar problem, Shackleton asked, "While I'm drinking some juice and eating some candy, who can tell me how to calculate the Fourth Challenge?" Steelsheen grinned "You're welcome Professor, and go ahead, take as much as you wish." she replied as she set the sweets down by her desk in case the Professor would like to have some more as she continued with her lesson.
Upon hearing the next question she raised her hand and replied "To calculate the Fourth challenge number, one has to subtract the year of birth from the month of one's birth." |

Thank you Amelia," as she accepted the cup from the Hufflepuff, holding it out for it to be filled. All of her students really were the best any professor could ask for, both in terms of the work they do in her class and the caring nature they exuded for their professor.
Trying to get the class on track and not have her students be side-tracked by her little sugar problem, Shackleton asked, "While I'm drinking some juice and eating some candy, who can tell me how to calculate the Fourth Challenge?"
Amelia beamed when the Professor took the cup from her, and she carefully removed the top from the flask and filled up the cup with pumpkin juice. "No problem Professor. Always good to keep something for emergencies..." Not that she was in danger of being stranded someplace with no food or drink, but you never really could be certain.
Resuming her seat quietly when the Professor tried to get them back on track, she raised one hand, using her other hand to awkwardly put away her unused goodies. "You would calculate your fourth challenge number by taking the year of your birth minus the month of your birth."

As the pumpkin juice began to hit her blood stream, Macadrian already began to feel a bit better, stronger. Standing from her chair, but still keeping her hands on her desk to brace herself, Shackleton requested, "Now, everyone please calculate your Fourth Challenge number and find the textbook's explanation. Please include your Fourth Challenge Age, which is the same as your Fourth Pinnacle Age. If you'd like to share your information with the class, please do so at this time."

Crystal noted that the Professor was begining to look a little better and went back to her work. Fourth Challange number:
2054 (2+5+4=11 1+1) 2 - 7 = -5
When 5 is your Challenge, you're learning to change and become more flexible. The love of changing rule can make others grow impatient and restless and desire freedom from rules and restrictions. Take a risk and loosen up despite the fear and confusion that change can bring. Learn to release yourself from restricting conduct that are limiting your creative energy.
fourth pinnacle age 50 till death
She was pretty sure she had worked her numbers out correctly but to check she wrote her sum in the air with her wand and watched as they appeared in a bright red. Professor have i worked these out ok? Also are you feeling any better or would you like someone to go get the nurse?

Amelia nodded at the Professor, she kept a careful an eye on her making sure she was okay with standing up. She then proceeded to calculate her challenge number, while still looking up every now and then to check on Shackleton. Fourth Challenge Number Fourth Challenge Number = year of birth - month of birth
= (2+0+4+8) - (0+8)
= (1+4) - (8)
= 5 - 8
= -3 Fourth challenge number = 3
THREE (3): When 3 is your Challenge, you're learning to recognize your emotions and speak from the heart. Learn that your words have a significant influence on your life as you may be critical with your words. The negatives of the 3 must be overcome, so work to abandon superficiality, aggrandizement, gossip, conceitedness, and speaking just to hear yourself talk. Under the 3 Challenge, work to use your creative energy to form a loving, positive, and joyful spirit and realize pure, unadulterated happiness.
Fourth Challenge Age: Age at end of Third Challenge, no addition and subtraction, until death
= 49 to death
Looking over her previous challenges, she realized that it stayed the same from her third challenge number. Weird, she thought as she then realized something. Nothing would likely change too much in her life after the age of 40. Raising her hand, she looked up towards the professor to report on her challenges. "My fourth challenge number interestingly enough remains as it was for the Third. I guess this means that i will still be struggling with this challenge even after nine years, and will struggle with false superficialities and conceitedness until death..."

| Mrs. Alex Turner *asterisks user* Secret Door Glad that the Professor seemed to have regained some of her normal strength, Evangeline looked down at her notebook to calculate her Fourth Challenge. Fourth Challenge:
Year of birth - Month of birth
2051 - 5 = 8 - 5 = 3 Third Challenge = 3 THREE (3): When 3 is your Challenge, you're learning to recognize your emotions and speak from the heart. First Challenge Age: 30 Second Challenge Age: 39 Third Challenge Age: 48 Fourth Challenge Age: 48, no addition and subtraction, until death Fourth Challenge Age Range: 48 until death.
And 3 again! Evangeline had to admit, she was a bit worried now. Three was her first challenge, her third challenge AND her fourth challenge! Whoa. "Three times lucky, I suppose." She muttered, a bit stunned. Twas weeeeeird! |

Astrid was happy that the Professor's color was returning to her face. That could only mean that she was starting to feel better. Feeling a little relieved so focused her attention back on her work. Month of Birth = 7
Minus
Year of Birth = 2054/11/2
Equals = 5
Fourth Challenge Number 5
My Fourth Pinnacle Age: 47 + 9 = 56
Age Range: 56 until death
FIVE (5): Prepare yourself for change and uncertainty, while relaxing on restrictions of your past patterns to deliver you freedom and liberation. Many people don't like change, so if you're one of these people, this time can be very unsettling, filled with restlessness, activity, and public life. Changes in attitudes, career paths, and business decisions that are forward thinking favor sales and promotions and do well under this 5 energy. Learn during this time to avoid impulsive choices, especially the urge to quit and leave. The major attainment is to learn to be flexible and adaptable.
Are you serious!! she thought to herself. A '5' AGAIN! She was starting to feel like a broken record. That's three 5's in a row. Well, at least she was becoming an expert at what the 5 Challenge was all about. "Professor my Fourth Challenge is also a 5. That's my third 5, mind you." she laughed. "So I will once again be learning to be more flexible and adapt better to change. I guess that will be my focus until the day I leave this earth." she said with a smile.

Allie smiled, and said, "Your welcome Professor." Fourth Pinnacle=4
(2+0+5+4) - 6=
6-(11)=
6-2=
4
Fourth Challenge Age: 50 to death
FOUR (4): When 4 is your Challenge, you're learning the significance of discipline, orderliness, practicality, and hard work. Learn how to work within the boundaries, limitations and restrictions of this difficult challenge and learn how to set boundaries with others. Learn to suppress impatience, inflexibility, narrow-mindedness, and self-righteousness.
"I think my fourth challenge number is 4 again." she said "Which, as I said before, I think, is pretty much saying that I will learn how to work with certain rules, and restrictions, how to work with others, and be more open-minded of others opinions. And how to more patient, and less narrow-mined."

She was pretty sure she had worked her numbers out correctly but to check she wrote her sum in the air with her wand and watched as they appeared in a bright red. Professor have i worked these out ok? Also are you feeling any better or would you like someone to go get the nurse? Professor Shackleton made sure her head was clear enough and her legs steady before walking over to the students' desks to check their calculations. She peeked at Crystal's parchment at her request and saw that her calculations looked accurate. "You seem to have done a nice job with the numbers. And thank you for your concern, but the nurse will not be necessary. I'm feeling quite a bit better already." She smiled reassuringly at Crystal and then headed back to the front of the classroom.
She turned to face her students and spoke, "You've all done a wonderful job this lesson. I'm quite proud of the work you've accomplished. Your homework assignment will be posted later today on the board outside my office. You're free to go. Thank you again for those who offered me candy and juice. I really appreciate it. Next time, I promise I'll come a bit more prepared." Shackleton chuckled softly and then concluded, "Have a good afternoon ladies."

Amelia was happy to see that the Professor was returning to her usual self and wondered slightly if perhaps the Professor had a history of low blood pressure or fainting. She nodded when she said the homework would be posted later today and shut her notebook. Carefully slipping it into the bag, she nodded at the Professor. "Thank you Professor and feel better. Have a great afternoon yourself," she smiled at the woman. One professor she surely would miss.
