The grounds immediately in front of the castle are packed down by centuries of feet walking across them and up into the castle. |

That's how it should be. It will feel so much better once you have told her exactly what you're thinking. Chances are, she probably feels the same. The worst thing she could say is that she doesn't like you back. And I'm pretty sure she DOES like you. So just tell her how you feel, and everything will work out. Girls love it when guys are 100 percent honest with them. It makes everything less complicated. So do what I said: be honest with her, and everuthing will fall into place," Fallon said. "Trust me, you'll be glad you told her." Miles stared at Fallon with wide eyes. "Wow. That's a lot of advice." He said, and then chuckled. "Well Thankyou." He nodded and carried on walking again.
"You really think she likes me?" Miles asked curiously. |

| "No problem," Fallon said, her arm still linked with his. "She acted like she did at the lake, so I'm sure she does..."
She didn't really know the girl Vannie, but if Miles liked her, then she must have been an okay girl. |

"Do you see how hard it is to be in my position then? Not being able to say a word against her? It's enough to kill myself, I swear. There is no way I can do this, but I have to. Urgh, my parents have the wrong taste in girls." He moaned at the sky, before putting his head into his hands in a 'tired and confused' sort of manner.
"Leave home? And exactly where would I go? Not like I could live at Hogwarts or crash at a friends every summer. Trust me, they will not take it well. My mum would go beserk and we might have a bit of a 'history repeats itself' scenario with your story except it would be me, my mum and a kitchen knife instead of a candlea-whatever-it-was." He explained, forgetting the name of the muggle item that she had told him about. It was a huge coincidence that both their mothers were similar in the way that they thought they knew what was best for their children. Lex guessed that that was just one of the things they actually had in common.
"Ohkay Okhay, every time Lydia's around you'll have to take it 'cause if I don't let my anger out in some way I might just kill someone. So basically its deal with a little bitterness from me or get killed." He said, adding in quickly: "And Lydia shouldn't be coming any time soon, not with her little 'emergency' thing." He could not be asked to have an argument with Shayna, not when they were starting to get along so well, so for once Lex was just willing to attempt to compromise on the situation.
"There is nothing wrong with the name Alex Deven..." He started before his point slipped away. "Fine, Alex is a bit weird but Lex Deven if still acceptable to me. I wish I could just rub the 'A' off my birth certificate, that would get me sorted for life." He said sarcastically, a light smile to his face, until Shayna's next words hit him. Lex looked towards the ground, swinging his feet softly whilst sitting on the branch. "I used to be able to get through this. But that's because I was able to convince myself that the idea of marriage was far away and now the engagement is this year. I can't hold it off much longer, I don't think I can actually get through this on my own." Lex complained, his voice bitter. He usually didn't act like this around people, he hated the idea of people pitying him, but Shayna already knew everything, so what was the point in hiding his misery? 'Oi!' Shayna exclaimed in mock-outrage, crossing her arms over her chest. She narrowed her eyes at him, before shoving him hard. Well hard enough according to her. Knowing Lex, he wouldn't even feel her. He'd probably think it was just a breeze or something. Ikh. 'Just because I'm...small does not make me younger. I'm fourteen!' Really, was it that bad? 'How about your godfather, you're close to him, right? Why don't you tell him? Maybe he's got enough power to do something?' She paused, wondering whether his godfather already knew about the whole demented situation. She looked at him holding his head in her hands, and she reached towards him, before checking herself and dropping her hands limply in her lap. No, hugging him would just about kill him right now, probably. She smirked though, at his last statement, 'I'm curious, really. How would you describe your taste in girls?' Shayna asked cheekily.
'There's nothing wrong with living at Hogwarts,' Shayna muttered defensively, 'And in the summers, you can always hang about at Diagon Alley. It's quite good really, no curfews for getting back, no parents to tell you what to do, the liberty's a really good experience. You should try it some time,' She burst out into laughter at his forgetting about the piece of furniture. 'It's a candelabra, Lex!' She exclaimed, gasping through her laughter. It was refreshing really, to find he didn't know just about everything there was in the world, it really was. She felt a twinge of unease though, at discussing their living arrangements. Even though leaving home would have been an easy way out of the whole situation, she didn't want to be leading him on and eventually have him end up living like she did. She shrugged finally, looking away from him, chewing her lips worriedly, not saying anything, fingers fidgeting.
'What?!' Shayna practically yelled in disbelief, 'So, you have absolutely no problem standing up to me, insulting me even, and yet the second you come across a complete... pathetic girl,' There really were no words to describe Lydia, 'You wilt and nod, and just go along with everything she says?' Her eyes surveyed him moodily, and she scowled, turning away from him, back facing him. His indifference to her really shouldn't have affected her, annoyed her so much, and she was irked to find it still got to her. Still staring straight ahead, not facing him, she muttered angrily, 'I'm not just some...tool you can take your anger out on just because the real reason you're miffed is someone you don't have the nerves to stand up to,'
'I was kidding actually,' Shayna admitted quietly, 'Alex sounds just as good as Lex,' Really how could it be any other way? This was Lex they were talking about, everything went with him! She perked up slightly but still kept her back to him, 'By the way, if I preferred Alex, would you actually allow me call you that?' She waited, wondering how he'd answer. Half of her wanted him to completely forbid her to call him Alex, while another half wished for him to let her choose, make her an exception.
'You know, if there was some way to get Lydia to really, intensely dislike you, all your problems would be solved,' She offered, only half-joking. But seriously, what were the odds of like? With Lex, what was there not to like?
'You're not on your own,' Shayna whispered suddenly, closing her eyes momentarily before continuing, 'I'm here, I'll help you...That is if you want.' She winced slightly, so glad he couldn't see her face, she could feel her cheeks flaming, but there wasn't any other way about it, she was being honest, she was willing to help him. Despite what Lex might think, she actually considered him a friend. Not almost a friend, or a nearly-there friend, but a friend. Ignore the fact that he was a very hot friend. Ahem. There was no way she was telling him though. He'd probably laugh so hard he'd fall out of the tree, and Shayna really wanted to leave today with the remainder of her dignity intact. |

There was no way she was telling him though. He'd probably laugh so hard he'd fall out of the tree, and Shayna really wanted to leave today with the remainder of her dignity intact. "I think height and age have an indirect link between them, or am I just assuming?" He joked, trying extremely hard to not look at her petite figure, it was bad enough that he was noticing it, let alone staring at it. His eyes flickered to the ground below and he tried to think of anything else, like perhaps how it was really good that both of them weren't afraid of heights. He felt something touch his arm and looked around, did she just try to push him? He cocked an eyebrow, as if to say 'nice try' in a slightly patronising way, well she was younger, he was allowed. "My Godfather knows alright, he's the one I complain to. But he won't be able to do much, my mum kind of counts his opinion with the Mudbloods. He's been trying to convince my dad but if my mum doesn't budge my dad can't do anything about it." He explained, suddenely realising his use of the 'wrong word'. Oh well, it was a slip of the tongue, maybe she'll see that and not suddenly go all angry in her bright eyes, flying hair ways. "Oh no. N-O. We are not going there. I will not, nor will I ever be having this conversation with you." He said, and was determined not to mention anything more.
"You can't live at Hogwarts, they don't allow you to stay over the summer holidays. Besides, I don't really do with the whole living in a hostel, hotel or whatnot. I prefer where I live and would like to keep it that way. And also, do you really think I'd remember the name of a muggle item? Please, I don't know anything about the muggle world, they're like aliens to me." He said, stretching his arms and putting his hands behind his head, leaning against a branch behind him.
"Do you know what could happen if I said no to Lydia? She would probably think I'm joking and want me more. The whole reverse psychology thing always confuses me. And I think you really walked into that one, you knew beforehand what Lydia was like and yet you came straight up to us. How could you not see that coming?" He asked, laughing at the idea of Shayna being a tool. It also didn't help that her anger was just making him laugh, he found her attempts to try and be angry so amusing that the main point never really got through to him.
"If you called me Alex I would not respond. I don't really like the idea of being called Alex, its such a common name, it bores me. I've been trying for years to get Lydia to start calling me Lex, but she just won't do it and if you did I would completely not pay attention." He said straight out, hiding the chill that blew over him in the idea of Shayna calling him Alex. Why were his parents so irritating? They couldn't even come up with a suitable name, let alone a marriage partner.
"The only way Lydia could hate me is if she caught me cheating on her as if on purpose, like I didn't care about her. Basically, if I acted like a real jerk she'll call the whole thing off. The problem is, where do I find a girl who would be willing to make out with me for like a day and then suddenly stop once Lydia found out? Most girls would get really attached. I need someone with no emotional involvement, but girls like them are amazingly hard to find." He said, sighing. What were the odds that Lex could find a girl that was willing to stop kissing him when he said so and return to normal life? Those chances were pretty slim, even Lex knew that.
"Thanks, I appreciate it, I really do. But there isn't much you can do. Its not like you can barge in and break up the engagement. However, it is nice to have someone to talk to about it in person. It's so difficult to find someone who understands my situation..." He said, astounded that he was thanking her. Lex wasn't really the kind to say please, thanks or sorry to any person who wasn't one of his teachers or parents. The only time that ever happened was when he was being extremely sarcastic, since that was just Lex's way.

"Do you konw her well?" Miles turned to Fallon. "Nope, I don't know her. I kinda keep to myself. But next term, I'm gonna be more open, and hang out with more people instead of just keeping to myself. I'm gonna make more friends. And over break, you must come hang out with me. My family would love to meet you! And we could go to my villa in Italy and visit all of the sights there. It would be so much fun, BFF!," Fallon exclaimed, giggling. |
