| | Herbology Lesson Three: Enhanced Journaling Techniques Lining the classroom were various plants, from cacti to ferns. Some shined and shimmered, some seemed waxy, others were just... plants. As far as that went, anyhow. Each of them (except for the ferns) was currently blossoming, which meant for a rather colorful classroom.
Erikson opened the classroom to awaiting students at last, once he was sure that everything was set and healthy. "Welcome, everyone. Please come in, take a seat. Place your konkagami or lily before you, if you could, unless you received further instruction from me on your plant."
ooc: please describe your konkagami, if there is anything of it left, as you enter the classroom |

Xana raised her hand. "By journaling the growth of our plants we're able to review the progress of the plant development, and in that review we could learn about the effects of our care on the development of the plant. With this in mind we could then make alterations to future caregiving attempts, such as changing the amount of sunlight, soil pH or other factors for optimal plant health."

Cassandra raised her hand. "Professor, Journaling gives you a record of the plant's life-progress. I find that a quick look back can help see where you went wrong and not make the same mistakes as the last time."

Despite not being excited by what his plant revealed about him, he was happy to see a new slytherin face chiming up and Kayla, too, speaking up in class. Maybe this Herbology class wouldn't be nearly as torturous as the ones preceding.

James' mouth twitched as the flower started bending towards him. Weird. "Because it could tell us things that might happen or already happened?" he asked, raising his hand after his concentration span ended.

"Good. Two points to each of you." He waved his wand and points came up on the board. He rattled them off as the did so. - The ability to chronicle the life of the plant
- Being able to see mistakes made, in order to correct them
- Keep a checklist of things to be done daily so they are not forgotten
- Note day-to-day changes
"In addition, in the cases of experimentation..." - Take note of what was used and when
- Record any and all effects had on the plant
- Keep a record of how the plant affects others around them
- Note changes in needs (light, nutrients, and soil type)
"Now, can anyone think of why I would have you journal each time I have you care for a plant?"

Heather thought about it for a second then raised her hand and said,"So that when we come back with a plant that is messed up a bit you can show us where we went wrong and explain how to fix it if possible."

Looking back at the front of the classroom, she thought for a second before raising her hand. "So that we can learn how different plants require a certain way to be taken care of"

"So you can see where we need the most help, and assist us accordingly." Cassandra answered. She glared at Xana. It wasn't being a Hufflepuff, it was the truth, and she was an idiot for not seeing it.

"So that you can see the techniques we are using and what types of products we are using on the plant. How we treat and look after the plant, so that you can see what we are doing wrong" Kayla said quietly. "Or to give us points for doing it right" she added jokingly.

| C.R.E.A.M | Haitian Sensation | Shark Patronus | Your Huckleberry | T's ClayBaby 'Why WOULD he have us keep journals?' Claudian gave some thought to this. Although he wanted to give a deeper answer, he didn't want to risk venturing off topic. "Is it because you want us to remember the things we've actually learned in your Herbology class, Professor? And to monitor our own learning, not just the growth and responses of the plant." He asked, though he didn't think the Professor was that altruistic. Not anymore.

"Perhaps not only to identify where we have gone wrong, but also to see if we have been more experimentative or used different ideas and then have a recorded entry of the affect on a plant. For example where we have been allowed to choose our own fertiliser in the past. In that sense you can test several procedures on a plant and review the outcomes without having to use further plants perhaps?" Hermy frowned, trying to give a different answer to those before her.

"Yes, in an experimental situation especially, it would be beneficial to have the log books of a variety of herbologists as they applied different care methods to similar plants; you could generate a trend report based on the results of each students' work and determine the best potential care techniques for the plant species as a whole that way." Xana hypothesized.
