quill Lesson 2: The Core and Companion Numbers

You enter the Arithmancy classroom, and just as last time, you see neat and exactly-positioned rows of wooden desks and chairs. Again for your comfort, the chairs have cushions in a myriad of colors and textures to match your comfort and liking. Numbers are floating all around the room and the windows are open, letting in a cool autumn breeze and blowing the golden curtains just slightly.

Professor Shackleton is at the front of the room, sitting at her desk, preparing for today's lesson. She is dressed in ornate robes of navy and gold. On the board behind her is written:

"Please be sure to have your journals with you and ready to take notes! Please take a seat and wait quietly for the lesson to begin."

Excelsior added the numbers of his birthday together, 1 + 9 = 10. That was easy, 1 + 0 = 1. He quickly realized that his birthday number was 1, and wrote that information in his journal. From studying the materials, he knew the exact number, 19, also played a factor is his destiny, so he wrote that number down, as well as the full mathematical equations and the number 1.

Zoraida wrote quickly in her journal some notes on the birthday number then her own. It was really easy to figure out as it was a single digit day so she wrote 6. Then looked back up and around at the back of the class seeing who was around. Noticing a few others that she recognized around she went back to doodling in her journal.

She then turned to the class and spoke aloud, "I presume each of you have found your Birth Day numbers by now. I would like you all to reference your textbooks, specifically the chapter about this topic, in order to determine the meaning of your Birth Day Number. I will read aloud what the book says about my Birth Day number. First I will read about my reduced number, 4."

Professor Shackleton picked up her copy of the text book and read, "You have a strong desire for security and stability and a firm belief in strong foundations. You are both practical and reliable, as well as fair and honest. You are self-disciplined and hardworking." Looking up from her textbook, Professor Shackleton clarified, "Now this information applies to anyone who has a 4 Birth Day number, which means anyone born on the fourth, thirteenth, twenty-second, or thirty-first. Though useful, it isn't very specific - which is where looking at your actual birthdate comes into play."

With the textbook still opened in her hands, Macadrian began reading again, "A twenty-two birthday indicates that you will be called to plan, organize, and lead large projects. 22 is a Master Number and it says you are very competent and must use your intuition and practical solutions to manifest things that benefit humankind." Professor Shackleton closed the book and placed it softly on her desk.

She turned once again to her class and clarified, "Do you see how this extra bit of information makes the number more personalized? And this number makes some sense for me, as I frequently am planning and leading this class, as well as the Gobstones club, and previous ventures in my career at Gringotts. The benefit I give to humankind is the education I provide young thirsty minds like yourselves!"

Professor Shackleton winked playfully and continued, "Now, Miss Brandywine, could you please read aloud from the textbook on my desk, the meanings of your Birth Day number, just as I have done? And class, I would like you all to look up the meanings of your numbers and take notes on them. Be sure to evaluate whether or not they seem accurate and applicable to your life currently or in the past."

Zoraida looked up her number. Not that she had to turn the page as she had looked it up before as she was writing the answer to the first question. Zora was definitely creative and artistic. As well as family oriented. Responsible was also associated with her number. Perhaps it was something she would grow into.

Kerry listened to directions and the explanation of the Professor's birthday. "Reliable, practical, fair and honest." she heard, "hmmmm, that does sound a lot like the Professor. Interesting." she thought as she approached the book and looked to see what her birthday number had meant.

Kerry quickly found the number 7. She cleared her throat, quickly and began to read, "If your birthday is the 7th, 16th, or 25th day of the month. You search for depth and meaning in all that you do and see. You are analytical by nature, which causes you to take longer than most to make a decision. Meticulous, pensive, and private, you need to be surrounded by natural settings of solitude and silence for rejuvenation."

She paused to allow her classmates to take in what she had just read and then looked down at the book and began to read what the meaning of the number 16 meant for her, "For those born on the 16th," Kerry began to read, "You may find your life brings sudden (even traumatic) events that act as catalsysts, wake-up calls to look at your life more honestly. You insist on independence, need time to rest, meditate, and contemplate. You may have an unusual interest in the technical, scientific, metaphysical, or spiritual subjects. You may be seen as a perfectionist and as unusual or different."

Kerry chuckled, "Wow, I search for depth and clarity in things, I also tend to look for meaning in things, contemplating those meanings? A prefectionist?" Yup that does sound just like me. Although the unusual interest thing I'm not sure about, but overall -how cool is all this?" Kerry nodded, impressed with what she had just read.

"This is amazing. Are the numbers usually this accurate for people Professor?"

Excelsior knew the number 1 would be more general, but he noted that information, as well. "You want to be first and individuality is most important with you. You are both forceful with your ideas and good at giving orders - but not at receiving them. Innovation is your middle name!"

"Well, I do like to be first, but I'm not sure how good I am at giving orders. I really don't like to receive them, though. Innovation, yeah, maybe." He decided the description for the number 19 was right on the money, and this was good but not quite exact.

Professor Shackleton grinned as she watched Kerry and the other students realizing how amazingly accurate the numbers often are. She replied to Kerry's question, "The numbers are often extremely accurate and almost always at least partly true. For those of you who feel that there are aspects that do not match who you are now, there is always the possibility that as you age and mature, these qualities or characteristics will ring more true."

Professor Shackleton paced the room, glancing at the students' journals once again. Remembering that Kerry was still in the front of the room, Macadrian looked to her and said, "Thank you very much for all your help, Miss Brandywine. Four points to Gryffindor for your assistance! You may take your seat now."

Brushing her bangs from her eyes, Professor Shackleton requested, "I would like you all to finish up finding the textbook's meaning of your Birth Day Number, as well as evaluating its relevancy to your life currently. I will give you a bit more time to be sure that you have done it properly and completely. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask."

OOC: I am heading off to bed for the night! The class will resume tomorrow morning (EST) and run throughout the entire day. Please continue to post your work but keep the chatting to a minimum. I am gone, but my character is not, so if you chat too much, house points may be taken!

"Well it will be interesting to see if I grow into those remaining characteristics," Kerry nodded once again. "And you're very welcome Professor, I was happy to help out." She gave a smile and a quick bow to the class in fun, and returned to her seat to jot down the notes she had just read aloud so she would have them for further reference later on.
