Lesson 2: The Core and Companion Numbers

You enter the Arithmancy classroom, and just as last time, you see neat and exactly-positioned rows of wooden desks and chairs. Again for your comfort, the chairs have cushions in a myriad of colors and textures to match your comfort and liking. Numbers are floating all around the room and the windows are open, letting in a cool autumn breeze and blowing the golden curtains just slightly.

Professor Shackleton is at the front of the room, sitting at her desk, preparing for today's lesson. She is dressed in ornate robes of navy and gold. On the board behind her is written:

"Please be sure to have your journals with you and ready to take notes! Please take a seat and wait quietly for the lesson to begin."

Ryan hopped into class and beamed at the Professor. "Hello, there!" he said as he took a seat.

He looked up at the board and took out his journal, which was now decked out in Ravenclaw Quidditch stuff everywhere.

Zoraida walked into the classroom and looked at all the numbers floating about the room. Bringing her journal and the book she borrowed from the professor in the beginning of the year to class. Zora walked and took a seat in the front the only class you would catch her anywhere near the front.

Placing both books on her desk. Zora said " Hi Professor " She would have to remember to give the book back at the end of class. As she forgot between the two classes. Partly as she had no replacement. Looking in the library she found many Arithmacy text with the same info so it was fine.

Ellie walked into the class, she took a seat as she looked at the boy. She knew him from somewhere but she couldn't remember where.

Lily walked in to see it was almost empty. "Hi Professor," said Lily, and she sat down at an empty seat, while taking out her stuff for the lesson. She waited to see if her friends would arrive.

lemondrop13 11-24-2007 02:05 AM

Professor Shackleton looked up from her lesson plan to greet each of the students who entered her classroom with a warm smile and a hello. She then announced, "We're going to wait just a bit longer for more of your classmates to arrive before we begin today's lesson. Just sit tight!"

OOC: Just so you know, this lesson will run over the course of a few days, likely ending sometime Sunday evening. The textbook is not complete as of yet but will be before you need the information as we go along. I went home to visit family for Thanksgiving and didn't get it done before I left - Sorry! :)

Kerry walked in and smiled. "Hello Professor, how are you?" she asked as she found a seat near the window.

She dropped her bag down and took out her text book, quill, ink and journal and placed it on the desk. Stretching her legs out, she stifled a bit of a yawn, as she awaited class to begin.

Excelsior walked in, journal in hand and greeted the professor as he came through the door. Arithmancy was turning out to be one of the most interesting subjects this year, he thought to himself, smiling. There was a lot to be learned through the study of numbers, and he was anxious to learn more.

Touy slipped into the class room digging in her bag for her journal and quill. "Good day Professor"

lemondrop13 11-24-2007 02:20 AM

Professor Shackleton stood up from her chair, picked up her wand off the desk, and walked to the front of the students desks. Beginning her normal pacing, Professor Shackleton started, "Hello! Welcome to your second Arithmancy lesson of the term. Last class we focused on the energies of each number and had a fairly didactic lesson. This one will be much more interactive, with you all being responsible for performing several calculations in your journal, as well as discovering what each of those calculations mean to you and to others.

"But first, we are going to begin with an easy one. This Core Companion number will not require any calculations - the Birthday Number. What does this number reveal to us?"

ooc: sorry I didn't see the teacher post

Patrick listened attentively. Even if he was no good at Arithmancy the least he could do was try. And he was sitting next to Kerry, who might be of some help.

Slytherin Fox 11-24-2007 02:24 AM

"This number reveals what you need in life to achieve your destiny," Excelsior said.

shortfry 11-24-2007 02:26 AM

Kerry raised her hand, "the birthday number usually reveals what someone needs in this life to achieve his or her destiny. It's believed that your soul chooses your birthday, because your soul chooses your birthday as a reflection of your own needs."

Ryan's hand shot up in the air, as he started speaking. "The birthday number reveals to us what we need in life to reach our destiny. This is such because the belief is that our souls choose our birthday to reflect our needs, ergo, our destiny."

Professor Shackleton nodded and replied, "That is precisely correct. 1 point to you!"

Professor Shackleton smiled at Kerry and responded, "Ah, Miss Brandywine has described the role of the soul in one's birthday - 1 point to you for that, Kerry!"

Professor Shackleton cleared her throat and continued, "Now, who can tell me how to find the Birth Day number? This person will serve as my example for the first part of the lesson."

shortfry 11-24-2007 02:35 AM

Kerry raised her hand again, "well basically to find your birthday number you just add up the numbers of the day you were born."

Loki 11-24-2007 02:36 AM

Ryan would have love to answer but many students had already done it and he coudln't see the points of repeating the same old thing. Grabbing his parchment closer to him, he wrote down everything he heard.

Slytherin Fox 11-24-2007 02:37 AM

"Well, you just take the reduced sum of the digits for the day you were born," Excelsior said. "For example, if you were born on the 22nd, then your birthday number would be 4."

Turning to the student who answered, Professor Shackleton replied, "Ah, Miss Brandywine, you are right again! Now, I am going to ask you to assist me in the first part of my lesson if you don't mind."

Macadrian gestured for the girl to rise from her seat and said, "Would you please walk over to the board and write what I ask you to write? Thank you."

She then turned to the class as a whole and said cheerily, "Let's all give Kerry a big hand for volunteering!" As Professor Shackleton clapped, she walked amongst the rows, peeking at the students' desks to see if they had brought their journals with them.

Ryan wanted to answer, but the Gryffindor Prefect had already answered the question. Suck up. Ryan was steaming, but he clapped politely, making his hands seem rather like an alligator. Snap snap!

zoraidatrowbridge 11-24-2007 02:42 AM

Zoraida said " The birthday number is the added digits of your birthday to find a number that tells what you need in life to achieve your destiny. Like mine is 6 since I was born on the sixth. But if I were born on the 12 it would be three. "

Looking back at her book and she knew she was right in what she said.

OCC: didn't see the prof post till I reloaded

Slytherin Fox 11-24-2007 02:42 AM

Excelsior applauded, glad in a way that it wasn't he who was chosen.

Excelsior had his journal opened on his desk. He noticed the professor was walking down the aisles checking, so he wanted to make sure that she noticed that he was ready to take notes. Actually, he couldn't be more interested in this subject, and he definitely wanted to remember everything he learned in this class.

shortfry 11-24-2007 02:43 AM

Kerry blushed as she stood up and walked to the front of the room. Turning to Professor Macadrian, Kerry smiled "So what would you like me to write? Oh... and I hope the class doesn't mind if I don't write near the top of the board, I ummm, can't exactly reach it." Kerry laughed.

Austin applauded the Gryffindor Prefect, who seemed very intelligent. Austin enjoyed Arithmancy but usually was to shy to say anything or answer a question.

*me* 11-24-2007 02:50 AM

Emily, seated next to Kerry, wasn't too bright at Arithmancy so she didn't know the answer to the first question. After she listened to Kerry's answer, she smiled and said, "Your good, but at least I'm better at choosing quidditch teams to go for." She wrote what Kerry said in her journal, willing to take notes.

She knew the answer to the second question, but she didn't want to volenteer, so she was glad when Kerry was chosen. "Go Kerry!" She said, with a grin.
