"But I suppose it's not the nicest thing to call anybody." She drew patterns on his leg with the tip of her finger. "For extra credit. And it's nice down there. Cool, you know? And there was like... some sort of partner potion thing. Which we did together. But after that we were supposed to do things with books and it sounded really hard and I didn't want to do it so I started to leave so she got mad at my sock drawer excuse and..." She was talking to fast; running herself out of breath. Whende stopped to take a deep breath. "I like socks too." She smiled slightly. "No craft projects. She called me mismatched. So I said sticks and stones. And she said rubber and glue. You know: I'm the rubber, you're the glue, so whatever you say bounces off me and sticks on you?" Maybe it wasn't a very common phrase. She wouldn't exactly know. She frowned. "But I need a comeback book. With words other than," she shuddered, "glubber." When ran her finger along his knee. "The... the not talking like a Patrick, thing," she explained.

"Really?" Patrick said raising his eyebrows. "Was I?" he asked again.
"What does Ancient Runes have to do with potions?" he asked still a little confused. Whende's finger was tickling his leg and he jerked it slightly when she hit and involuntary spot. "But Pauline's really good at Potions. She would've been okay without you and also she could have helped you if you stayed." he chastised slightly.
"Oh," he said and his face fell slightly, "so no sock puppets?" he asked hopefully. "Oh yeah, I remember that. We used to say that in my elementary school." he said smiling with nostalgic pleasure. "Comeback book? Hmmmm. I don't know any really, but then I don't reallly need one. Except for Cassandra, sometimes." he said scowling with thought.
"Not talking like a Patrick?" he said still confused. And then all of a sudden it clicked. "Oh, I've been using my Scots accent again," he said giggling. "Sorry, I didn't realise. See I moved over the summer to Glasgow in Scotland so I guess I picked up an accent a bit." he said apologetically.

"Yeah," When muttered. She nodded again, wondering how tolerant his chin was to tickling. "You was."
"It wasn't in Ancient Runes class. It was at the feast thing. She was freaking out about germs and all that..." She trailed off. His leg didn't seem so tolerant to tickling. She hesitated a moment, then decided she would draw on his arm instead. "And potions was the next day."
When bit her lip. "Well, yeah. She could. She can slice caterpillar guts and everything." She sighed. "Pauline doesn't like me very much."
"No sock puppets. Oh! But I did make paper friends at the feast. Nero, Sampson, and Max." They were upstairs, on the table by her bed. "I bet Nero would make good comebacks... Better than stinkin old glubber." She sat quietly for a moment, still perfectly happy to listen to the hum of his throat.
"Oh." Duh. Scottish. "Well do it again," she commanded.

"Who are Nero, Sampson and Max?" he asked looking all around the room in case they popped up from the corners of the room. "Alrigh, alrigh, calm ye doon," he said exagerating a bit on the accent.

"She just... doesn't." When didn't know why. But it was completely obvious. First, Polly stole her box. And then she flipped her onto the ground and left her lying there. Technically she shouldn't have jumped on Pauline's back in the first place. That was beside the point, however. Polly never looked happy to see her either. She didn't make it a habit to talk nice when When was around. But that didn't mean she knew why.
"Whenick's Paper Friends," she said slowly. She smiled, closed her eyes, and let just about every muscle in her entire body relax. Her finger slid down is arm to rest in the palm of his hand. "That's... nice..."

First of all, to answer your question the reason your hair and eyes changed with that brush is simple. Bridget,your mother put a charm on you when you were seven to hide your true identity. The "tattoo" as you put it is actually a birthmark that all the women in our family posses. Some very bad people are after you because of a betrothal made when you were just an infant. This would not be in the best interest of you or our people. Imagine it! You marrying one of those...Savages!
All of these things will come to light in time, but for now know that I love you and hope that you will be joining your grandfather and I for the summer holidays. Alfred Reechez has served his duty to you and our family. I know this will come to you as a huge shock, but he is not your real father. Your mother took you into hiding and Alfred took you in.
